Fast Violin Solo: Me vs Yanni violinist Samvel Yervinyan

- I cannot believe I was able to play this solo against Samvel Yervinyan all these years ago (it's now 2018). Man, what a furious, highly technical few minutes! Samvel is amazing, especially because as I understand it, a lot of this was improvised on the spot.
I really did learn this within a very short window of time, mostly because I was single, living by myself, and had LOTS of free time... I remember my hand feeling extremely sore after this video, too. This is no walk in the park!
Yanni's manager Bob (I believe?) contacted me shortly after, letting me know that Yanni watched this video and was very impressed. So that was a nice touch!
One of the reasons I picked this song to play was actually not specifically related to Yanni or Samvel Yervinyan. In fact, it was more in response to a video I watched of a kid doing a "violin sync" (like "lip sync" but for violin) along with the recording. He mostly just made lots of faces, moved his bow around wildly, and got his fair share of downvotes and critical comments. I decided that I was going to make my own version of this video, hopefully outperform this kid, and actually play the REAL notes.
Early on, I had a lot of comments accusing me of speeding up the video. Subsequently, I released several new videos featuring metronomes and close-ups of me playing really fast to prove that I could play fast. In retrospect, it seems silly that I was willing to do so much to fight Internet trolls! I've since learned to take a chill pill and just let trolls be trolls. But every now and again, I feel that burning desire to PUT THEM IN THEIR PLACE! And I think this video encapsulates this feeling as I tear through the notes as fast as Samvel does! Not quite as well, but I think I still managed to keep pace as well as one might expect to be able to when one is not actually Samvel.

Samvel Yervinyan has mastered many international styles of violin and he incorporates them in his solos. In that particular solo I hear so many different styles of violin.
Yes right? I used to watch Ben Chan allllllll the time. Back in 2010 when I was still in middle school. Thought he was the shit and I would watch all his channel. You’re telling me the video of this man playing swept you off your feet so immensely you decided to dedicate an entire days night to learning it bit by bit? Stroke by stroke? Nah. You played very well and astoundingly, however you’re either the worlds biggest virgin and truly have nothing else to look forward to or you’re a batshit lying bastard. I started playing violin when I was 15 years old, but I stopped for 3 years, because I had to work a lot in my job, but now I decided to continue, And this was the first video I saw, 10 years ago, It's really good to remember those people that inspired you, in the beginning of journey in violin

In my opinion, BenChan is an amazing player. There's no doubt about that. His technique is smooth, speed is fast, and his intonation is perfect. However, it is because of his perfect intonation that I think this rendition lacks that tiny little Middle-Eastern essence. The playing would be perfect if it were a classical piece, but as the piece was an Oriental style solo, there are some notes that should be played not in tune to the chromatic scale but maybe sharpened a little higher than normal. As an example, the original playing by Samvel Yervinyan demonstrates that perfectly. All that aside though, that was not only amazing transcription work, but quite an astonishingly fast sight-reading speed too. It was a mind-blowing experience just to watch you play. Congratulations on an amazing performance!

Was not expecting this. This is awesome
First you didn't get owned in the least. You really did a good job and to write music too is a huge accomplishment in itself. The only thing I did notice between both performance was not the speed. He seemed more relaxed. Reminds me of Eddy Van Helen, while most guitarist made paining faces Eddy was always smiling like he was never tense. You just seem more tense because (correct me if I a wrong), but so concerned about finger placement, and he just at play (or in flow damn hippies). But that seems to be the only difference. I would say just relax more and your fingers already know where they are going just let it happen. But by no stretch were you owned. Just learning, and that is the wonderful thing about our craft is that we can do it everyday and their is still something more to learn. I personally think you did a fantastic job. The only difference was body language, well done sir.
How long have you been playing? I've only been playing for 2 months and it's _so_ frustrating. I'm surprised I haven't thrown my violin out the window and set it on fire. Although it'll probably happen at some point.

Hey, as an OK-ish player of the violin, I'd wholly agree that it can be infuriating, but in the longer term, the rewards are greater than can be imagined. It's wonderful to give a piece of music the expression that you can give it after a few years of playing.

Ben, I have played the fiddle for almost 18 years, only 6-10 of which were used for hardcore practicing and learning. Music like what your playing, and many other styles, as well as people such as yourself are a true inspiration. I learned to play by ear, and never took the initiative to learn to read music. Please keep up with what are truly gifted at my friend. Absolutely amazing.

It's been so many years since I last saw this video, none the less it was still pretty entertaining watching you play this! I'm an old subscriber, ever since I was in 7th/8th grade I believe? It was my 2/nd3rd year in Orchestra and I would remember just gazing at all your videos and every morning I would just noodle on anime songs that you would transcribe (Senna was probably the most showy piece I knew! ).
I would actually get in trouble with my director because I always had other music that I printed at home in my binder than the chamber music xD!
I'm a senior now and I really appreciating what you're doing , it's fun to see other types of songs being played on Violin than the usual. You could even say, I started to REALLY get into playing when I started learning Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, and Code Geass songs.
Well what I wanted to say was, you're doing something great here on this channel. Keep up the awesomeness!

Freakin . . . .woooOOOOOooow. Your video made me realize how big famous musicians with tons of hype, coverage, and monetary backing can play very well on an expensive stage. BUT! Everyday people with normal lives can also, with alot of hard work, do things as well as if not better than people that get alot of attention for it.
