Thanks, you deserve a gold medal! :-) I followed your instrunctions on a Samsung Galaxy S Advance with Android 4.1.2 and now I can record video immediately without waiting the system for creating that bloody giant file .thumbdata (bigger than 3 gigabyte! O___o). To improve your solution, I suggest everyone to add an empty file called ".nomedia" in every folder that you don't want to be scanned by Android picture gallery. It works perfectly! ;-)
Whenever i open my gallary there is thumbnails bt it doesnt show in DCIM in memory card bt there is thumvnails in phone memory and everytime i delete it comes back
Good instructions. Question: My .thumbnails file is located in my Internal File not my SD card. And each file is about 50kb each in that folder. Same instructions?
I did exactly the same: deleted the .thumbnails folder, created a new one, but nothing happened even after restart. No place freed at all. Maybe it has a kind of recycler or system reserved space. Actually it was useless.
I did try doing exact what is told (replace large file with the same name new file), but the problem as I noticed is elsewhere. That file shows up everytime camera is on. Probably this file keeps all small images that they would be seen in camera or different programs. When I delete that file and later turn on camera, camera freezes for long time untill it can be operational. After that thumbdata files appear. I thought my camera is slow because of slow phone. But it is because thumdata file is building up. As long you have lots of pics in your phone, larger file will be.
emulsyjna Which phone do you have? The function of the thumbnail/thumbdata file is to show the thumbnails in your gallery. So yes, it keeps certain data of the small images (thumnails). Are you sure you replaced all the thumdata and thumbnail files? Because sometimes there are 2. And yes, as you said the thumbdata file is building up with the amount of pics you have. But. My Gf for example had 2 thumbnail files on her xperia z1 compact and they were just 54 MB large. So nothing. And it caused the thumnails in the gallery not to show. So check if you have more than 1 file.
allabouthegalaxybeam I have Samsung Galaxy Ace2 with 8GB external sd card. Afterall, I left in phone only few pics (ten or twenty, compared with three or four hundreds I had before), but still thumbdata file keeps on growing 400mb and still my camera freezes often. I tried even create new file with same title through file manager, but system managed to overiride it and make it 450mb again.

+allabouthegalaxybeam I forgot to create the file again, but it was before cleaning, because I cleaned with ccleaner and after that I was searching for that "problem". Thanks ;)
Can i ask 1 question ? i download or transfers new photos into my phone. but when i want to see the photo, the photo can't open and its said " No thumbnail" what should i do?
panda chenny chen ewe sometimes the photo thumnail can´t open or you get a camera error when your thumbnail or thumbdata file is too big. Which happened to me. So I would suggest you to follow the advice given in my video.
The memory on my sd card still is occupied after deleting thumbdata. I have two thumbdata files, each 2.7GB. Thats roughly a 70% of my sd card. And they're growing every day. This shit sucks.
sky maze And you created a new thumbnail as mentioned in my video? Just deleting them is pointless. You need to create a new file otherwise it won´t work.
allabouthegalaxybeam yes i did. i seems like the memory is gone after deleting and creating a new one. There was no thumbdata then on my sd, except for that fake one (0kb) but i had no access to that memory i actually should have after removing the large thumbdata. After a couple of reboots and camera and gallery launches, the thumbdata restored by itself, somehow.
are you sure that you named it exactly the same? The issue could also be the permissions of the file. If they dont have the permission to execute tasks then the system might give you trouble. Are you rooted?
I don´t think Cm12 prevents u from that but I am not sure. Go to the root browser and check what permissions u got on the thumbnail/thumbdata file and name them here
I always saw these thumbnails on my phone when i was younger and i didn't really gave it a second thought however this shit is dangerous 😭💀. This is so incorrect. Those files don't actually use any of the phone's storage. You can delete them all you want, and your available storage won't increase at all.
Bro please help me to recover my photos which I saved the photos in safe gallery free, when I cleared the catched files in my phone the photos in the safe gallery files also got deleted it shows no thumbnail found in the safe gallery please help me

allabouthegalaxybeam How to delete it? So when i open my files and click on DCIM there is no file called thumbnails? I have the sony xperia z1 compact and i only see the thumbnail file when I am in my album.
then it must be this one. That thumbnail data file contains just the thumbnails of your album gallery (you know.. first you see the picture small when you scroll through your album, and then once you click on the thumbnail it becomes bigger and you see the actual photo. So the thumbnail datas are just the smaller preview pictures that are visible in the gallery album. Its not the picture/photo itself. So I would do a backup first of your pictures and then delete that file (if its large and creates the problems mentioned in my video). Then proceed as shown in the tutorial..
you just copy your pictures to the pc to be on the safe side. I mean its not needed but I would still recommend it. And why cant u delete the file. Do you get any error message or what?
Actually my important photos got deleted which i had put in safe gallery, for that images i observed that there is a .thumbnail file while using "clean Master" app , in which i can see my deleted photos... they all are small size in kb .. but i want these photos how can i get that...please help me
+Pankaj Deshamukh the small size kb photos are usually the preview thumbnail photos. These are around 20-40kb large as far as I can remember. So once you go into your gallery and see the small previews these are the ones you are talking about. In my opinion you do not need these preview or thumbnail pictures. Normally proper photos are in the size range of 100+ kb (mostly for front facing cam pics) and start at usually 1+ MB for backcam pics. And deleting these preview thumbnail pictures do not delete the real proper pictures that you have stored. That means that the real "bigger" pictures should still be in your phone.
I can see these thumbnail pictures while i was using app name "Master cleaner". but I cant see that original pictures in Galary I think main picture has been got deleted. so at list i want that thumbnail files. So i can extract that images from thumbnail file. Thanks for your reply
+Beamtekk; Hi I just post to say Tysm for Sharing this video. My phone keeps saying low storage space. Reep AllDay Please don´t lecture others if you have no idea what ur actually talking about. When you delete it the file data is gone. That also means that your available device memory space increases. By creating a new one you start again at 0 MB and thats an obvious difference to the bigger previous file size. You delete the file because its too big for the os to handle. Thats why you can get a camera error that I mentioned in the video. After doing the procedure shown in my video the problems for me and others were GONE. So how do you call that? Magic? If u know it so much better make your own video and let people vote it. I´d be curious about the outcome. Besides.. the OS did not start up slower. But anyway, u know it best, right Einstein?
allabouthegalaxybeam he knows what is he saying, happened to me , mine has a total of 12 gb, two hidden .thumbnail, but my internal memory is 9gb/12gb, still got space, it doesnt even make a change if you delete it, perhaps your gallery might not work or experience error, this file doesnt affect any, but if you are bothered by it, the only way is formatting your device, dont worry you can save your files to cloud or by using google back up, i believe so that this video also shows bad tinkering, - got this idea from an xda developer, so just to be clear, this thumbnail thing doesnt affect or harm anything, but if you want it to be gone, formatting will help. :) ,
Another expert. You should not only delete it. You have to create a new one. I mentioned that in the video. Just deleting it is pointless. And it made a big change for me and others when you read the comments. Not only are the errors gone but I gained more free space as that file was gone as well. And please dont say it doesnt affect anything thats plain wrong. On my gf´s xperia z1 compact the gallery pics on the homescreen get totally pixeled if the thumbdata/nail file gets too big. After creating a new file and deleting the old one it gets back to normal. And formatting is the last option when u have no idea what to do. Every idiot can format a phone sorry. If you format it it just means that ur too lazy to find a solution or too dumb to research for one. At least I took the effort to do a video instead of leaning back and bitching about "bad tinkering" And that must be an amazing xda developer that gave you the idea to format it. Lol. If somebody tells you to format your phone he has usually NO clue what he´s talking about. But ur all experts right?
allabouthegalaxybeam okay,,, but I'll tell you that not every problem have the same solution, it depends on the device that we are using, so dont assume that experia z1 of yours as a proof,.. And my device is toshiba.excite, toshiba has high security when it comes to system software, so its too risky when i tried what your solution is. So i hope you understand it.. So far.. Your solution can be good too.. Because you already had a proof, all i wanted to say is the solution is not always compatible to any devices.. :)
I have xperia z1 compact and galaxy beam. But yes, it seems that this method might not work on all phones. But I just dont like people generalizing that this method is shit or doesnt work. Good day.

Good day.
