I'll never forget being a 14-year-old suburban American lad, staying up late to watch In Concert, and on comes this guy my mom's age dressed like a biker-pirate-ringmaster, his spandex-clad mime guitar player sidekick mocking the moves of arena rock guitar heroes whilst simultaneously mopping the floor with them in terms of tone and heaviness....this was a good couple of years before we'd heard of "punk rock." It opened my eyes to a lot of things. About showmanship, about music, about the rock concert as a performance. Specifically about how much having different stage personae can bring to a band. Nothing like them before or since, although people have taken bits and been influenced. I'm happy to see the mime guitar slinger still making the scene.
@louiemalvessi For Zal Cleminson to be aware of how much he and Alex and SAHB meant to me and opened my mind....what an idea. And not out of the question in the internet age. I later became a musician myself (which you know if you go to my UA-cam page), and my first electric guitar was a Gibson non-reverse Firebird I just like Zal's. He was and obviously remains an amazing musician and performer
I Interviewed Zal on Radio Aire in Leeds in the early 1980's for my Rock Show. He was easy to talk with, self-deprecating and seemingly unaware just how ground-breaking and influential SAHB were. There has never been a band like them - and there never will be.
This music was soooo heavy for its time and it's just as heavy today, people always speak of underated guitarists, he's not but somehow is lost amongst other greats like many others, his stage presence is amazing especially in the 70's dressed as an insane mime 🤘😵🤘
Totallly agree. His presence on stage is still mesmerising. It was incredible seeing him going from civilian to a total nutter the second he stood on the stage. A true artist.
I loved the Mime persona he had, mischievous grinning, the lolling of his eyes and tongue, winking, waving then instantly changing his expressions to all business and most serious rock guitarist persona ever...just like he is now in this video!
I just discovered SAHB 3 days ago, at 2:30 AM as I was prepping to drive from NY to NC for a my move and I’ve been constantly looking for more. I couldn’t wait to get here to hear more. I missed the band for decades so I’m making up for lost time and getting familiar with Zal here. Needless to say I’m totally in awe of this man and hope i get to catch a live show. This is a real rock and roller!
Ohh such a cool story man. I hope all goes well with your trip from NY t NC. Make the most of it! As for SAHB, absolutely undiscovered gem of rock an roll, the street wise of adcd, the musicality of Zep, the antics of Kiss, but intellectually challenging as well. It's bonkers how good and ahead of their time they were. What I find fascinating is that I found in Zal a completely genuine person as well, they were for real. Enjoy the ride!!
The exact same experience happened to me just two weeks ago, (except I was at home with the flu bug), and I had to see and hear everything immediately. I'm still in total awe, bought the t-shirt and wearing it proudly! More importantly I am listening to new music by Zal, Orphans by Ashes, I believe is his new group. Check it out on YT.
I was in a band going to a gig and we met Tear Gas (Zals Band) They Had A Puncture, we gave them a lift to the nearest town (Blairgowrie) they were brilliant because they were just like me (A no hoper trying to make it) Look At What They Did

The best band Alex ever worked with. Every pub and band in Glasgow played this song when it came out. My sister even married one of the band members. Eddi Campbell. Great Guy.
Superb, heavy, interpretation! It was a great evening at The Underworld, Camden for SAHB’s last tour. Meeting the band too. I was lucky enough to see them with Alex on The Impossible Dream Tour too. Vambo Rool!!!
