*_I DIDN'T CARE THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE mtv. THIS SHOW WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME! AND I ALWAYS THOUGHT OF THAT EYE AT _**_0:24_**_ AS BEING 1 OF my NAKED EYES, TRYING TO STAY AWAKE! :)_*
80s was such a magical time. We were getting a taste of technology without choking on it. Family still had real value and most everyone could actually take a joke and have fun. I really miss those days.
I was there too. Thing is, "most everyone could actually take a joke" = "people who got mistreated by the majority mostly didn't dare say anything about it b/c their lives could be ruined or taken" but you do you ok
Oh man we stayed up most of the night on Friday nights watching Friday Night Videos and then got up early to try and tape our favorite songs off the radio from Casey Kasem's Top 40. It took forever to get to the number 1 song but we didn't care, it was awesome.
I taped American top 40 also. Plus I think I wrote the titles of the songs also and on Sunday I typed them out on an old manual typewriter lol (this was for me in the 70s), then watched Friday night videos in 1984-1985. I used to watch one from an abc affiliated also titled All Htt Videos. I miss the 80s!
I stayed up late too but often had the volume cranked WAY too loud and more than once Dad stormed up the stairs to yell at me to turn that shit down! ;-)
We didn't have cable back in the 80's, and this the one show I looked forward to watching every Friday night. It came on at 1:00 am in the morning. I couldn't wait for the intro to start. Good times.
I was in 6th grade. We had no cable or satellite, thus no MTV. I remember watching this episode by the line up mentioned. Brings back LOTS of memories.
Nostalgia hits hard. FNV, ShowBiz Pizza, 8 Wheels roller rink. Atari and then Nintendo, & blockbuster summer movies that were just FUN and didn't try to carry a message.
I was 17 in the summer of 1983. Good times! Drinking California Coolers all night and rolling by McDonald's to get a Quarter Pounder with cheese and 🍟 and renting some VHS movies on the weekends. And of course watching Friday Night Videos!
Talk about throwbacks! This, and GEORGE MICHAEL'S SPORTS MACHINE were some of my earliest NBC memories. Listening to this video on my headphones, I forgot what a privilege it was for 80's families to afford color TV sets with Dolby Stereo speakers.
Looks like I'm not the only one who didn't have cable as a kid! Friday Night Videos was my MTV until '86. I never missed an episode. Thanks for this blast from the past!
I remember watching this as a kid. Thriller came on and I was home alone. I kept imagining zombies looking inside while I was watching Friday Night Videos. I survived.
Oh man! I actually got my 1st kiss watching the Thriller debut on that show. A magical time.... Can't remember her name or face but I remember getting my 1st kiss.
Friday Night Videos was an awesome show. My family at that time didn't have cable so I watched this show. I remember staying up just to watch Michael Jackson's Billie Jean video for the first time. I almost didn't get to see it because my mom told me to go to bed. I begged her to let me watch Michael's video and she did.
Omg!!!!!! Me and my sister love this show back in tha days!!!! Late night Friday night were awesome to see your favorite artists!!! I miss those good ole days!!!!
I watched Friday Night Videos religiously when I was a kid in the early to mid 80s. I loved seeing it every week. First time I ever saw 'We're Not Gonna Take It' I almost lost it!!
Watched this all the time i Actually like Friday night videos more than MTV...Friday Night Videos ran from 1983 to 1991..and won a Emmy award..Friday Night Videos was a huge important Part of the Great 1980's music seen..
This was my show back in the day. I think it came on at midnight because Johnny Carson still came on at 11:30 on channel 3 in Cleveland. If you didn't have cable, this was how you kept up with the latest music. I forgot about the "Video Vote". I think I tried to vote, but couldn't get through.
*_ROLLING MY NAKED EYES. I USED TO MISS THE 80s TOO, BUT I DON'T ANYMORE. I'VE HAD better TIMES THAN THE 80s SINCE THEN! AND AS FOR TODAY'S KIDS BEING "STUPIDER", WELL THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE FROM THE 50s USED TO SAY ABOUT US! THE OLD HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED DOWN ON THE YOUNG, AND THEY ALWAYS WILL_*
Friday nights back then, especially in the 80’s, were fun. Friday nights today, especially in 2023, are not. Why? Because the landscape of music and television has changed. Now on weekends, we’re stuck watching sports and movies. Furthermore, today’s music is crap. Thank God for UA-cam, it’s the only place to watch old stuff. Whoever you are and whoever you’re at right now, thank you for posting this Friday Night Videos opener. Have a great afternoon, peace and blessings.
There's a lot of newer bands coming out playing post punk and synthwave stuff I like. There's also a group of L.A. called Fire Tiger that's very 80's rock. It's just that you'll never hear this in the B.S. mainstream scene.
hey there, omg ive been trying to find this on youtube forever! thank u for posting. this was a simpler time. the tv with shows like this gave us something to be excited about and to look forward to at the end of the fri night. it would come on around 11pm. im 45. so i was like 7 when i watched this. life was better. calling girls we met on touch tone phones hoping they were home to answer lol. bless you sir!
Everyone I know including myself had cable back in the 80s and 90s. We all had the illegal cable box with all the channels plus the special movie channels and PPV was all free, maybe this is why I don't remember ever hearing about or watching 'Friday Night Videos'.
Wow I was just a month into the 8th grade. It was so cool when this was simulcast on the radio because if we were out late we could listen to it. Was great because my dad was listening to all of that stuff too.
Friday Night Videos actually followed The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson at 1230AM from 1983 until 1987, then was pushed back until 130AM when Late Night with David Letterman expanded from 4 nights to 5 nights. FNV was cut down from 90 minutes to 60 minutes around that time. It eventually evolved into NBC's Friday Night when the format switched from music videos to comedy sketches and standup comedy. NBC's Friday Night was eventually cancelled and was replaced by Last Call with Carson Daley which had also replaced NBC's Later on Monday-Thursday nights.
Memories indeed!! Growing up as a kid we lived outside the city in the country and didn’t have cable tv so this was our MTV, VH1 on Friday nights at 12:30am!! Cable tv finally came to the country when I was in the 10th grade.
I've always loved the opening music. I found out the theme music was written by John Leffler and William Wittman. I found an end credits sequence online. Has the original long version ever been available?
I loved this show! I was 7 years old in '83 and tried my best to stay up and watch this every week. I was fascinated by music videos and loved the contests they had every week (the battle of the bands, although some of those match-ups were downright dumb, like Def Leppard vs. Hall and Oates. C'mon! Who did you think was going to win that one? Lol). In retrospect, Friday Night Videos was better than MTV. It packed a LOT into a small amount of time, IMO.
The 80's was a different time then, growing up in that decade was so much different and better than today It's extremely difficult to explain that time to the younger generation
Radio shows were better too. That's why I became a DJ later. I was 17 in 1983. I remember they had a contest that pitted Pat Benatar vs. Stevie Nicks as the Queen of Rock. I chose Stevie.
I was 7 the year this came out, and I had a song listed on one of the episodes that stuck in my head for over 25 years before I finally figured out what the song was called lol. Good Times
NBC cancelled SCTV to make way for Friday Night Videos in the 12:30AM timeslot following Johnny Carson. Letterman was on Monday through Thursday at 12:30AM until 1987 when Late Night expanded to five nights a week, pushing FNV back to 1:30AM. I think that had something to do with the record company's decision to start charging TV stations and networks for music videos.
Funny thing about Sharp Dressed Man was that it seemed to be an extremely popular song, won the Video Vote for like 4 or 5 months, but the song itself did not even crack the Billboard Top 40
If you didn't have cable, for MTV, then this is what you watched on late Friday nights, to catch up on the latest music videos.
👍👍😎🎶
+MK Dallas I'm with you there! My brother and I would stay up late to watch this.
+MK Dallas this and NightTracks Chartbusters on TBS Saturday nights.
TBS also cable, so...no

Amen!
Well said and very true.
I don’t know which 80s you lived in, but half the families I knew were divorced and about 30% of the rest has some serious levels of dysfunction
I was there too.

Same here.
Sure did. I was up
Same!
The opening theme music AND the graphics scream awesome. That's about as much creativity as you can cram into a 30 second intro
FNV actually WON an Emmy for the opening intro/video..
It has an 8 bit computer graphics look to it that was apparently kinda' Space Age-y ...
This was HEAVEN for everyone that didn't have cable and loved videos.
nuff said?
I was in 6th grade. We had no cable or satellite, thus no MTV. I remember watching this episode by the line up mentioned. Brings back LOTS of memories.
I just burst into tears watching this....
TRUE!!!
Me too.
For sure!
Nostalgia. It's such a strange feeling, huh?

About 1986?
Looks like I'm not the only one who didn't have cable as a kid! Friday Night Videos was my MTV until '86. I never missed an episode. Thanks for this blast from the past!
Do me a favour. Don't ever delete this!
I remember watching this as a kid. Thriller came on and I was home alone. I kept imagining zombies looking inside while I was watching Friday Night Videos. I survived.
Yes..and that was the last video they showed that night
😂
Same!!! 😂🥰
Oh man! I actually got my 1st kiss watching the Thriller debut on that show. A magical time.... Can't remember her name or face but I remember getting my 1st kiss.
ME TOO! It premiered around Cristmas 1983 making me wish I had a VCR then.
I wouldn't trade growing up in this era for anything.
I used to stay up late to watch this show. 🥰
This is what I did just about every Friday night as a kid. Simpler times!
When I was young, I could hardly stay up to watch this but I managed to do it every week. Me and my bro would watch it always
Indeed. We looked forward to watching it all week.
yeah looked forward to it too.
One of my fondest childhood memories was watching this with my mom when everyone else was asleep. 11:30 PM, NBC Channel 4
I remember these graphics very well! We didn't have cable so we couldn't get our MTV.
Omg!!!!!! Me and my sister love this show back in tha days!!!! Late night Friday night were awesome to see your favorite artists!!! I miss those good ole days!!!!
This is the most 80s thing I've ever seen.
I watched Friday Night Videos religiously when I was a kid in the early to mid 80s. I loved seeing it every week. First time I ever saw 'We're Not Gonna Take It' I almost lost it!!
Every Friday night I would be the only one up so I had to turn the volume down and sit close to the TV to watch this.
Someone ought to do a full-length cover of this opening, it would kick butt!
Watched this all the time i Actually like Friday night videos more than MTV...Friday Night Videos ran from 1983 to 1991..and won a Emmy award..Friday Night Videos was a huge important Part of the Great 1980's music seen..
When NBC changed the music video format and went to a celebrity gossip type of show, I was very upset.

Epic. Glad I grew up in the greatest golden era of entertainment.
This also premiered the same night as Dallas back when on September 30 the 1983..XD Thanks for the upload !! XD
Had MTV but still liked Friday Night Videos much better simply legendary
i miss the 80s
+Forest Malcolm Yeah, everything is all fear, doom and gloom now. Everyone is paranoid and suspicious of each other. Sucks

Ulysses North yes ! The good days
Me too! Lol
Me too! I also had Beta. I'd watch it every Saturday morning.
@@EricToronto Yeah. I had a Sanyo Beta VCR, wired remote, and it was like gold to me!
Me too!!! All the kids would come to my house after school to watch Thriller lol

So many memories! The 80’s were magical.
This show was so huge back in the day when not everyone had cable.
Thanks for the upload !! This aried the same night as Dallas season 6 TV in Friday September 30 , 1983.. XD
The 80s is so awesome in my opinion. Futuristic computer graphic animations, very catchy music, etc.
We had MTV but still stayed up to watch this every Friday. We thought it was so late.
Wow this brings back great memories! Waiting for your favs to be introduced at the beginning....
THIS THIS A THOUSAND TIMES THIS!
I watched this every Friday night back in the early 80s.
The best audio I've heard! I love the Intro!!
*New York Hot traxx, Friday Night Videos, and Video Music Box!!!!!*
Wish I had a Time Machine. I was 13.
Takes me back to when I was growing up on Kingsbridge Road, Bronx.....GOOD TIMES!!!...GREAT MUSIC!!!
This show, ABC Rocks and New York Hot Tracks. That's all my family had without MTV.
I was 13 and probably playing with myself when this aired.
I loved Friday night videos!!!! It wasn’t a school night, could watch videos, so much fun.
Friday Night Videos and Night Tracks back in the day. Didn't have MTV but these shows were great to watch.
This gives me good memories.

The Legendary Friday Night Videos..NBC 1983 to 1991
Omg! My favorite show as a youth! Back when you had to mess with the tv antenna with tin foil and switch the channel with a pair of pliers.
Watching this in 2020... remembering when I was a kid... And watched it on tv 💗
For those of us whose mom and dad wouldn't budge on getting cable TV.......

This was the best time of my life….watching this makes me so sad and longing for the past. Wish I could go back!
Kids back then would record this on tv on a cassette and then, watch it in the afternoon in the mid-1980s.
Wow what a memory trip!!
Man. Friday Night Videos. Back then, we had to be good almost all week to watch this and it was almost impossible! Loved that show!
I miss these days!
Wow the memories, thank you for posting this!
Man. I wonder if any of those original t-shirts are still around.
Axis TV should revive Friday Night Videos. Maybe use the old intros, bumpers, and outros with new voiceovers.
Its sad alot of new generations will not understand these special simpler times in recent history.
I do remember watching "Friday Night Videos" during the Winter-Spring seasons of 1983 when I was in 4th grade.
The Legendary Friday night videos
Damn that was a hell of a line up!
You're not wrong!!!
Poor man's cable, those who didn't have cable.
Wow I was just a month into the 8th grade. It was so cool when this was simulcast on the radio because if we were out late we could listen to it. Was great because my dad was listening to all of that stuff too.

This is what we had when I was 11 years old!
17...GOOD TIMES!!!
OMGGGGGG ;( I miss my childhood so much. I hate this generation and I hate this era. 80s come back!!!!

watched thriller for the 1st time on this show.
This was better than mtv
How about some love for MTV's Friday Night Video Fights? Martha Quinn? Reigning Champ? Duran Duran -Save a Prayer..!

This was on just before. Mtv blew up miss the 80s
I just turned 10.
Damn I miss my childhood😢
Was it really forty years ago. Sheesh.
It's a friday night and I wish it was on.
The 80's was a different time then, growing up in that decade was so much different and better than today
It's extremely difficult to explain that time to the younger generation
It was also simulcast in stereo in many markets through FM affiliates. You'd just turn down the TV and turn up the stereo.
Remember falling in ❤️ with Rick Springfield and the "Human Touch" video on FNV!
Me too! I so wanted to be on that spaceship with him:)
Every friday night when I was a kid lol.... Never won a shirt with the video vote

If that ZZ Top was Sharp Dressed Man it was number one for a long time if I recall.
I think it was half the first year, and either "Billie Jean" or "Beat it" took the rest.
Funny thing about Sharp Dressed Man was that it seemed to be an extremely popular song, won the Video Vote for like 4 or 5 months, but the song itself did not even crack the Billboard Top 40
Exactly me too, man I miss those days....

I remember this
