    I can't believe the time I spent messing around with this cargo hook. I didn't know there was a special tool used until it was mentioned in the Civic accessory listing by a certain Honda Dealer. Anyways you sure did a nice job explaining everything. Thanks

      Is the grocery hook in the civic accessories list now? I could've sworn I didn't see it in there when I bought my car.. I just noticed the familiar holes one day so I got online and ordered a couple.

    Thanks - I used your method to install two hooks in my Acura TLX. I was about to return them after seeing I needed a special tool that was $89.

      I'm concerned that these hooks on a TLX will be a problem and get in the way when needing fully load the trunk with suitcase luggage or when you need to fully squeeze every bit of space for a family road trip. Any comments on this? I have a 2020 TLX.

    I bought an 18 Civic 4dr sedan the other day... and the car's hook installation area looks just like yours. I didn't even mess with the rivnut. I used a 1" long 5/16-18 bolt with a couple of well fitting washers, and 'nylock' nut. First, the hole in the plastic hook needs to be slightly enlarged. Just holding a 5/16" drill bit in pliers was all it took. A rat tail file would have also worked as the plastic is really very soft. The bolt with one washer was worked up and dropped down through the car mounting hole; then a 1/2" wrench was fished up and placed on the bolt head. The hook, washer & nylock nut were carefully 'worked' over the bolt and snugged up with a 1/2" socket. I did two of them alone... took a couple of minutes each, but must admit it would have probably been easier with a helper. Anyway, both are there, rock of Gibraltar solid & look factory original. I think the nylock is important, as you don't need to tighten it down excessively, thus avoiding crushing of the plastic... just snug is fine and there is no danger of it vibrating and/or otherwise working loose. Be careful hanging stuff back there, if a bag of the correct length starts 'flailing' around it could lunch a speaker... or speakers. :(

      @caraddict  6 років тому

      Hey as long as you got it mounted, whatever works works right. I only hang the bags full of bread and lightweight stuff on it anyways. I think it says max 6lbs but I'm not sure. I know in my accord they worked better because heavy stuff in a bag would sit on the trunk floor and the hook only was needed to keep them in place.

    Just wanted to say thanks for this video. There are many out there, but yours made the most sense to me and worked like a charm. All told, I think it cost me about $3, but that’s only because I had to buy washers in a multi pack. Anyway, I installed 4 rivnuts on my wife’s new ‘22 Civic for the cargo net accessory, everything came off without a hitch.

    thanks for the tip.... I just bought a 2017 civic, and wanted the cargo net.. was surprised to see I needed a Rivnut pull tool.. when I started to price them I almost hit the floor.. as high as 200$........ FT... found your site and saved a ton of money. (only difference for me is going to Lowes, instead of H/D.... Lowes is a lot closer to home)..
    again thanks for the help!!

    Awesome, this will be VERY helpful for my Civic coupe as the holes aren't accessible from the top without removing the rear deck panel from inside. Excellent thinking here!

      No matter what I tried I couldn't get the lock washer to bind the loose nut and rivnut together. Fortunately I was able to use a small angle socket and work it into the small space above with a nut and they're firmly installed. Already used them, very handy to have.

    Did this on my 2019 insight. Instead of going your route, I just used the washer and a nut at the end of the bolt to screw it down. I did do it your way on the left side but it seemed like to much work for me and I kept messing up lol

    The one minute (no rivet nut) install with no additional parts- No sweat, no kidding!
    It will take you longer to read this than it will take you to do it.
    Here is the link to the official Honda instructions:
    techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/AI/AII13004.pdf (this might come in handy to know what parts I am talking about)
    In it, they list all the parts included in the bag and they note that there are two extra pieces which are not used.
    Miraculously, these are the exact two pieces you need to install the cargo hook without the rivet nut. (Honda rocks) While Honda does not give you the alternate, no rivet nut, instructions, I will.
    1) Locate the hole originally intended for the rivet nut (pictured in the instructions or the video above)
    2) Find the “Not used” Flange nut. Note that one side is round and rough (to grip metal) and the other side will accept a wrench. Lay the nut on top of the sheet metal in the center of rivet nut hole in the trunk with the rough round side down, touching the sheet metal.
    3) Create the following cargo hook sub-assembly which is very similar to what is shown in step 5 of the instructions above- On the bolt, place the spring washer, then large washer, then cargo hook. Note that I used the large “Not used” washer here rather than the small one. I did this to center the bolt better in the cargo hook hole.
    4) Put a 10 mm shallow (standard) socket on a short extension. (Do not attach the extension to the ratchet yet.)
    5) Put the 10 mm socket into the cargo hook sub-assembly created in #3. Note that if you position the socket, extension, and cargo hook subassembly vertically, it is nice and easy to control and position with one hand.
    6) Install the cargo hook assembly into the trunk by 1) holding the flange nut in place with one finger 2) with your other hand, take cargo hook sub-assembly, socket, and extension and screw it into the nut you are holding in place just a few turns to get the nut started.
    7) Align the cargo hook pin (the piece sticking out of the flat side of the cargo hook) so that it goes into its hole in the sheet metal and then continue to tighten until it is finger tight.
    8) Now put the ratchet on the socket and extension to finish tightening the bolt. Honda suggests tightening the bolt to 4.0 N.m or 3.0 lb.ft. which is not that much, so if you do not have access to a torque wrench, tighten it so that it is snug, but not much more than that. I suspect that if you tighten it much more than that, the cargo hook will break.
    Note that I did not say anything about holding the nut in place with a wrench to prevent it from turning. The wrench is not needed because you already made the nut finger tight in step #7 and the rough side of the nut bites into the sheet metal (step #2) enough to keep it from spinning.
    Like I said, reading this takes longer than doing it.

    the kit also came with a smaller diameter washer and a castle nut but I didnt see you install that. was that supposed to go on the top part above the sheet metal on the other side to keep it all installed and in tact?

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 3 роки тому

      seems the PDF found (for the CIVIC) says the larger washer and castle nut is not used so.... extra parts? hmm

      I wonder if the same hook in a different vehicle with better access to the other side of the panel ditches the rivnut and through-bolt it with the large washer and flange nut securing it? The pdf does say civic... I think I've put that hook in 3 Hondas, I know I've done 2 and one was an accord and I still did it with the rivnut.

    Couldn't you just use the nut that comes with it? You'd need a long wrench, but would that cause any problems?

    • @caraddict
      @caraddict  7 років тому

      +jim messer I actually bought another set for the other side of my trunk. I forget what hardware even comes with it, I'll look in the bag and see why I don't think they'll work... Maybe tonight when I get home

    • @caraddict
      @caraddict  7 років тому

      just opened the package and now I think I see what you are talking about, originally assumed you wanted to use the included flange nut to install the rivnut, now I think you mean ditch the rivnut all together and just through bolt it in the hole. Would probably work but if you look at the hole it is sized for the rivnut, the bolt itself is much smaller than the hole which would introduce slop, and the flange on the nut isn't much larger than the hole so it would lessen the available clamping force of the fastener. so over time would be much easier for it to come loose, something loctite could solve though I guess...

      Plus it is a huuuuuge pain getting a 10mm wrench in there. I basically had to bend it to get it to reach.
