I love it when Duncan intentionally makes a mistake like he isn’t some reincarnation of the Emperor just so he can help people by teaching them how to correct mistakes without feeling bad about them.
The funniest part is that I was looking at that "error" and thinking, "Hey, it actually looks like pretty cool battle damage, like some rocks hit his bike at high speed"
This is really important and something I never see in tutorials, I hope he introduces this as a regular part of his videos. Maybe just one mistake fix-up per or something. Really looking forward to "so, you applied contrast paint a bit wrong..." :D
@@onezerotwo This is why I love Duncan's tutorials so much: he doesn't just tells you "I use this and that paint and this brush." He takes his time to explain and show his techniques. I wouldn't say he makes this look easy, but he makes it look simple. You feel like practice is the only thing keeping you back, rather than technic
I think I finally figured out why I love Duncan's videos, and why I have since his GW days. These videos remind me of my younger days spent watching Art Attack reruns!
I have to say the most beneficial thing I gained from this video is that really really good painters make mistakes as well and pointing out where you made some "additional" mistakes is nice to see. Especially because I constant see people say don't be afraid of mistakes and then in some of their videos you NEVER see them actually make a mistake and fix it.
I love that you show us the mistakes and how to fix them. It can be daunting watching pro's like you paint and try and replicate the result without making any mistakes. This makes it seem much easyer.
Hello, I am an 18-year-old high school student who started UA-cam last year. I started posting videos on UA-cam last year and joined Warhammer five years ago with your UA-cam videos. I started painting after watching your video, and now I'm uploading the video to UA-cam. I wouldn't have been able to start UA-cam without your video.Thank you! I look forward to the work you will be working on! Thank you for reading my long sentence!
Literally just started painting these boys. Just finished my first ‘test’ one. Pleased to see my method is similar to yours. I just add an extra edge of dawnstone before the administratum grey. I especially like the Corvus black for the tyres. Helps break up all the black. Little note: it is possible to paint these in sub assemblies if you cut the feet away from the front of the bike. Then let’s you paint bike separately from the rider.
As someone who is about to start my first miniatures I love how specific in detail you go into. It's something I think is missed by most tutorials, showing the type of brush and those specifics is so helpful
Such a great guide. That subtle weathering with the steel legion drab is excellent. I'm definitely going to use this for my Death Company Intercessors.
Thanks for the guide Duncan! I've been sitting on about 15 Raven wing outriders I bought off a friend. I had no idea what to do with starting. (I was also waiting for the new codex to come out.) I also have some Primaris Marines on bikes. So I was really happy with this coming out when it did.
Great video! Even when it's not a faction or game I play, it's incredibly encouraging seeing your work. If you're taking requests, I'd love to see a video on doing different skin tones and hair colors.
Loved this! Been following you for a while now trying to paint a DA army (Noob). Now I'm trying to paint the Raven Wing and this has been very helpful! Keep up the good work my friend!
I really love painting miniatures (and assembling them). Now i am creating a homebrew warband called the paladins of the soul dragon. Unfortunately for me i have uni exams and they are a pain in the ass so i must wait untill the next month. But if everything goes well then i will resume working on my warband and i will try to 3d print some parts to make my space marines even more unique. I will paint them in a metalic purple color and i cant wait for the exam period to be over. I have to admit that i dont like the uni i am at and i dont like the subject i am studying (physics) but i decided to stick till the end and this hobby is a great way for me to relax and stay somewhat positive. It really helps with stress i must say.
Great video, now thw trinity of Dark Angels colours is finished. Now for some Chaos, some Thosuand Sons or a Lord of Change would be nice. And of course some more Infinity minis and Marvel Crisis Protocol. Or some Arcworlde stuff.
the part at 17:30 where he makes a mistake on purpose had a weird effect of flushing a bunch of anxiety out of me, I can't do the super thin edge highlights like he can and I get a ton of those mistakes and they suck to fix later ... this was really helpful and I appreciate it. funnily enough, Duncan, do you think you could screw up on purpose a bit more in future and show us how to fix the mistake? I don't think you know how useful that would be to a lot of your viewers! :)
Please please please, do an in-depth tutorial on varnishing. I find it super important for intermediate/ advanced painters. I'm struggling right now with a mainly metallic theme for my sister's of battle. I'm trying to find the best method for making the Metallic armor not be dulled down by varnishes, and its tough to find the best method. Varnishes destroy metallic finish and shine. There is so little information on the internet. I guarantee it will be a popular video.
Loved the video as always, these are just as relaxing as those old Bob Ross paint tutorials but also extremely useful to me as a new miniature painter!!! Quick question, are there any plans to do more Gloomslite Gitz models in the near future? I know you just did one with a grot a bit ago but I would totally pay a subscription fee to see Duncan's take on a Rockgut troggoth or a Badmoon Loonshrine.
If you're intimidated by edge highlighting because you're a guy with shaky hands like me, there's always the option of using color pencils. They can get rubbed off easily if you make a mistake, then seal it all in with a matte varnish spray after.
I like the eye lense technique. you get the dark shading around the edges and the brighter portion of the lense with just two paints. Probably pretty easy to replicate with contrast medium and other colors as well.
I dunno if you take requests for ideas on your next painting videos, but I would like to ask if you could possibly do a video of how to paint up a Crimson Fists Primaris Lieutenant in Reiver Armor and painting his "hero base," please? I know it's a very random request (that particular action model I fell in love with and want to paint one or several up lol), I believe if there was a step by step video by you, I think I will gain the confidence needed to finally start up the Crimson Fists chapter army I've been dreaming of doing for a long time. Also thank you for all your painting tips throughout the years, Duncan. I honestly don't think I'd ever get interested in the miniature hobby without your videos. And shout out to Roger for brilliantly handling the camera so that ALL angles can be shown and the showcasing of the miniatures look like they belong in a museum! 😊
Hi BlueDemonica. We sure do have video in mind for painting the Crimson Fists and we hope to get on it soon. It may be on the Academy website as we are currently adding to all the other SM Chapters on there. Also, thank you for the kind words. We are glad we could do our small part to help 😊
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Thank you for the response! I will have to check out your guys' site and hopefully you post it to UA-cam as well. Gonna look forward to it!
What are your thoughts about some Blood Bowl tutorials? I'm actually a little scared to try the coins of the Gouged Eye and Elfheim Eagles. Not just because of the color schemes and blending, but also the fact that they would be used and touched just as much as the players. Would spray varnish be the answer for all pieces for Blood Bowl? Thank you if you get this, and wish me luck on the painting stage!
Nice to see you doing a wee bit of weathering. I've been doing a lot of scale modelling recently and the weathering stage is where the models really come to life. For whatever reason people don't seem to weather fantasy/sci-fi minis. It's the Grim Dark for pete's sake! Not the parade ground. get that dust and grime built up, let alone some battle damage.
Usually the treads of a rubber tire are darker where they contact the surface and lighter in between the treads because the lighter dirt is retained moreso in between the tread. The method used here by Duncan and almost everyone that paints GW bikes actually gives a very unnatural look because it is the opposite of real life. I dont think this matters so much for the outriders because obviously whoever designed this motorcycle has obviously never ridden a motorcycle.
So glad this one has been done, been collecting Dark Angels for a long time, and only just moving onto Ravenwing's now...also would it be possible to do a video or offer advice on fixing the following issue, i put the wrong squad number transfer on my Dark Angels, is there a way to fix this without having to file it down and start again? makes it worse that the number sits on top of an emblem transfer as well
Mistakes made while edge highlighting could also be a happy accident opportunity to add wear and tear. I could see that first example mistake showing some bright silver through or some rust where the paint wore away from a rub.
With all these fantastic tutorials, has anyone wondered what Duncan does with those miniatures? Like does he strip them back and repaint them to a scheme he uses or does he just collect a small force in that army/scheme?
I love it when Duncan intentionally makes a mistake like he isn’t some reincarnation of the Emperor just so he can help people by teaching them how to correct mistakes without feeling bad about them.
The funniest part is that I was looking at that "error" and thinking, "Hey, it actually looks like pretty cool battle damage, like some rocks hit his bike at high speed"
And he really had to visibly contort himself to make that mistake in the first place. Reincarnation of the Emperor, indeed.
This is exactly why I'm not mad that I subscribed to his Academy and mistakenly forgot to unsubscribe when I was done with the one tutorial
This is really important and something I never see in tutorials, I hope he introduces this as a regular part of his videos. Maybe just one mistake fix-up per or something.
