The reason why you can still hear the sound of Mario underwater when the game locks up is because the game's processing is happening on multiple threads on the CPU. The main thread crashed causing the freeze on screen, but the audio thread has not crashed and is able to work independently, so that's why the audio is continuing to play.
And this is also the same reason why crashes on other systems are similar, audio often will continue to play. Gamecube just kind of buzzes sometimes because while the audio thread has not crashed, it often is streaming CD level audio from the disc and once the CPU crashes, the CPU is no longer able to fetch the audio data to feed it to the audio thread, has nothing else to play so the buzz is what you get instead.
With the flame one, it's not so much that the flame has a weird hitbox, it's that standing on slopes has a weird coding that causes most objects to treat you as if you were standing on the bottom of the grid space that the slope is in. It's why springs in front of pipes on slopes work the way they do as well.
Something's telling me that, with the first level, the crash happens because Buzzy Beetle helmet Mario moves into the Wiggler in such a way that it effectively causes the game to detect an insane amount of collisions, overflowing the RAM and crashing the primary processing thread. That's just my theory, though.
this is kind of historic for uno mas mm2 history, since you have so many people watching, you can push any glitch that was just out of reach before possible because of your community, nice job getting people to do both 3d world and smb1

No, it's quite literally the definition of a softlock... but softlocks generally don't forcibly close out your game due to an error (it just means you need to reset to progress), so advanced softlock is a good enough name. A hardlock is where you can't progress EVEN IF you reset. Generally it's because you did something the game didn't expect and then you hit a checkpoint/save point of some kind to save that unexpected thing and the game doesn't know how to react, because it was never programmed to react to it. As a result, no matter what you do, you can't finish. There has been cases of this happening (especially in the speedrunning community where glitches are taken advantage of) but I can't think of any real life examples off hand.
At 6:20 you play a level where you focused on the fire having bad hitboxes but payed no attention to the fact that it is required to die in the level... Unless a p-switch just triggers for the creator after 4 mins or something...
Looks like the setup is: the key door itself, a note block, a falling Mushroom (I don't know what significance that has), Mario in a buzzy helmet, two conveyors, two cannons that have their backs pointed at each other, and a giant angry wiggler. Sounds complicated in words and looks that way on text, but the setup in operation looks otherwise simplistic. Oh whoops I forgot the person that discovered this also used a few sound effects too, although I don't know their significance either... xD and I forgot the one-way too! 😂
My guess for the game freeze is that it has something to do with the effects. Maybe there are too many going off simultaneously along with the stars coming off of the shellmet when something is bumping up against it. Maybe so many effects that it overloads something. Just a guess. Very cool find.
Just a bit of feedback, I love that after some of these uno mas levels, you go into the level creator and sort of investigate the glitch. That's gotta be my favorite part of this video so far!
@zerojayzero you are def right but what happened here was either an unhandled exception caused by the collision or integer overflow. It seems to be more likely to be a collision error because when Mario hits the worm guy (forgot his name) he wants to go up but he can't go up. Then he would go down. But he can't do that either because blocks and Mario are there too. Repeat that and the main thread hangs causing the game to softlock and eventually crash. When Dave tried to close it, sys sent a singal to the game to terminate. Except the main thread is hanging so it can't respond. It waits and tries again then same thing happens so sys forcefully closes the game (like alt F4) and posts an error. This is what I think happened based on what I know I could be wrong so whoever knows the answer, correct me.
my understand of broken track teleportation glitches is that they work by making something like a launcher on the broken track jump to another track, which pushes Mario along for the ride. I would imagine items on tracks don't move during that time freeze glitch and therefore it wouldn't be possible.
That way of swimming was in Mario Maker 1. It was also in the actual NSMB games, except you could swim upwards while doing it, too, instead of just going down.
I'm pretty sure that Japanese level with the flamethrower wasn't about the hitbox, it was about the placement of the checkpoint flag. The only way to beat it is to die and restart from the checkpoint.
That first one was mindblowing, to make the game crash so hard that it even had trouble shutting down from the home page, would love to know what was actually going on there, that was just crazy.
I can confirm that the slow paddling in water does exist in Mario Maker 1 (at least the 3ds version). It works slightly different. To do it, you *hold* the jump button.

That swimming maneuver was in New Super Mario Bros wii. I don't know if it was ever in before that, but I remember that feature when I was playing that as a kid.
Larree is talking about the "error" level, if I'm correct. The element Dave didn't notice is a twister, and the shelmet. Also the specific water level and the fact that it's falling, and the speed of the conveyer belt. All of which is visible in the level but not mentioned by Dave. The only thing not visible is that the semisolid used to make the background is not flat at top but two different levels with a slight overlap near where the game freezes, though I'm unsure if it's related to the glitch or more likely not. It's silly to try to act like you know more than anyone else when the level viewer is available to the public and anyone who wants to see any setup can do so. Real little timmies will never be able to recreate this setup, even with a step-by-step guide. They just make trash, and as bad as crashing the game is, it's a careful, specific setup that is anything but trash. Meanwhile, talented creators that intentionally make "little timmy" levels are smart enough to use the level viewer and figure out the setup and don't need someone in the comments to help. For the record, anyone can Google "smm2 level viewer", click the result on wizul, and enter the level code (XH6-949-46G) to see the full setup. The wiggler/water lowering setup is extremely jank xD I missed this video before, but it's interesting the experimentation Carl recently did with it, which Dave isn't allowed to watch
the "time freeze" glitch is caused because the time freezes when mario takes damage or goes through a pipe in singleplayer, and for some reason that setup causes the game not to go back to it's original state.
8:31 The fact DGR doesn’t realize how Mario looks funny when he goes into the pipe and the fact that he comes out twice on the other end, and even more so that he misses it on his own level, tells me he doesn’t have an IQ of 171.
