I just retrieved my Go Cart from the 1960's. It has the original Tecumseh H58 engine. It seemed so fast way back then! I'm restoring it now. Since it is so old and I am way too big to drive it, my plan is to rebuild it, start it up with just fuel in the Carb, listen to it run for a minute and then hang it on the wall for eternity.

My first kart was a used Caretta with a dead axle and a scrub brake. I started out putting a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine on it and then a McCullogh stolen from my dad's chain saw.

You'll find that the first carts were actually built in the backyards by some kids.

I used a tailgate from a 1956 GMC pickup truck. Perfect shape. Got an old pump engine from the Salvation Army thrift store. Put a pulley on it and one on the wheel and a third pulley attached to a door hinge that was connected to a foot pedal that stretched the fan belt and off I went, for about six blocks. The engine didn’t have a gas tank. I would fill the float bowl with a gas can that I stored next to the engine. Would do 20 plus mph which seems pretty fast four inches off the ground. No brakes, rope steering.

Louis Borelli was my neighbor in Echo Park in the 60s and 70s. My older step brother worked for him in the 1950s. His shop was a brick building on Echo Park Avenue.

Much earlier, before the Go Kart name was around, a local store here in NW Ohio made basically go carts... we called them Cooper's Cars...
I have a 1940 Popular Mechanix magazine with plans to build what would later be called a minibike, used electrical conduit, wheelbarrow wheels/tires, 2 1/2 HP Briggs before recoil starters, belt tightener, etc... about 1968 I scratch built a suspension minibike with Jawa 350cc motorcycle engine...

4:12 Surplus lawnmower engines. Not old. They were new but unwanted in the first incarnation. You just told me so. Other than that, top marks on all departments (script, production, funny accent etc.). Cheers!

There was a lot of karting done on dirt oval tracks in the Midwestern US too. Briggs & Stratton and Yamaha engines were popular. I remember Margay and Bug brand chassis.

Very nicely done. My father and I started racing karts in 1961 in Los Angeles, CA. Art Ingel's was a regular at our home track, Monza Speedway in Gardens and my father Wally Wallick drove Art's Caretta brand kart for ten years. We went to visit him at his home/shop in Echo Park, LA when I was 15. The shop was his 2 car garage. Each Caretta was made to order one at a time and had the level of quality you'd expect from a Indy car builder. Now, I am a 74 year old man living in the Thai jungle building an Experimental Kar with a full body, canopy, twin Yamaha 150cc, water cooled two stroke motorcycle engines and 6 speed gear boxes. I call it the GXP-75. That stands for Grit's Experimental Prototype @ 75 years old. Hope to have it completed by my birthday December 22, 2021. Look for it on UA-cam early next year. Best wishes, Grit.

I've got 3 Carettas and can testify to the amazing build quality. Art's friend, John Hartman, picked up where Art left off after he sold Caretta jigs (became Caretta Works) and tubing in the late 60's. John carried on, updated and perfected Art's initial design. John was a Caretta factory driver in the early years and Art built many of the initial chassis' for John. Between Arts IndyCar background and Johns aviation background they developed and executed some of the best built, innovative designs of the era. You can't talk about karting in the US without Hartman's name coming up, they are widely considered the gold standard from the late 60's through the early 80's.

@@GeorgiaJunkman I remember John and his clutches. He used to come to Monza Raceway in Gardena, our home track. I remember seeing a fat stack of big bills popping out of his wallet when he opened it up to buy something. I didn't know him personally, but he was very successful both in racing and business. I believe he was the first guy at our track to run clutches. Everybody else ran direct drive.. didn't he have a son who drove?

    • @GeorgiaJunkman
      @GeorgiaJunkman Рік тому +1

      @@ghraydon Yes, John's son was
Gary 'Jose' Hartman and he was a successful sprint & enduro driver probably best known for his 'blimp' exhaust pipes. John married Kathey Machala (a lot younger than John) and they went on a 20yr win streak. I think Kathey has 40+ national titles. I've heard tales that John would rent out Daytona Speedway for her to test and practice. She quit driving and karting after John passed. Last I heard she's big into fishing and is a nurse.

@@GeorgiaJunkman thanks for all that history. All that cash would come in handy renting out Daytona Speedway.

Back when I was. Racing and building go karts. A name brand as a " dart kart. " with single. Or dual west bend. Brand. Engines. Or mc culla brand but also built a lot of frame from thin conduit tubing lite. And fast I remember early age. To build karts and mini bikes. Loved. That back then 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Fun fact: Ayrton Senna (I believe) promised his family that if he won the world karting title, he would quit racing and go work on the family farm. Lo and behold, he technically kept his promise and left one of the most impactful (if tragically short) careers in racing history.
At least that’s what my mum told me. If anyone wants to fact-check me, feel free to do so, but if you could provide a link, I would be grateful too.

Karting has got a lot faster. Parma, made in 1961 is .28 miles. Its modern counterpart, GoPro Motorplex, is .7 miles, or 3 times as long as Parma. The karts have gotten so much faster, that they need much bigger tracks.

Unfortunately the sophistication and cost of high end racing equipment pushes the average man out,
It pushes out the very people who created it, I liked it better when a father and son could afford to participate.

Daytona Milton Keynes, as it is now, started out life as the James Hunt Race Center before (I believe) going bust. It was then aquired by Daytona. My son races in the Inkart series and it's a fantastic way for kids to get into karting for a reasonable cost.
