Inkscape: Use Path Markers To Repeat An Object Along A Path

  • In past tutorials we went over how to use the "Pattern Along Path" effect to repeat objects along paths. The downside of using that tool is that it deforms the object along the path. In this tutorial we'll be going over how to use Markers to get around this and create a pattern along a path without deformation.
Want to learn more about how Inkscape works? Check out the Inkscape Master Class - a comprehensive series of over 50 videos where I go over every tool, feature and function in Inkscape and explain what it is, how it works, and why it's useful: logosbynick.co...

Those tutorials (Path function, Bezier pen, etc) videos are also helpful for the detail tho, but this kind of tutorial is more effective for me. Big thanks for Nick.
By the way, my office told me to use illustrator and Photoshop, so.. anyone know the channel that use same teaching method as Nick? That would help me a lot.

Nick or anyone else - please help! I tried this. Works great thank you. You are a great teacher and I bought your class. Recommend it to everyone. My problem is I am trying to use Inkscape to draw and then import them into my CAD software (Carveco) so I can cut them on my CNC machine. Not matter what format I save these in, it doesn't work. Anything like .png, etc... leaves me with very jagged bitmap imports, and when I try to import the .svg file all i get is the original circle and the original star. Nothing else. Is there some way to save this as vectors? Thanks for anyone who can help! Mark.

Hi there, thanks for the tutorial, very informative, however when you add more nodes to the circle, there is not an easy way (or at least not that i was able to find it) to custom space your nodes, for example having 7 nodes evenly distributed, yes, we might achieve that with a polygon, the second thing i have experienced, is that (perhaps i just don't know how to do it) once we have our pattern repeated, there are limited options to customise each repeated pattern. you have shown how to resize, but it would be cool to be able to change each separated object/marker, but again, i have just started and surely there is something i am missing, It would be cool to have a tutorial on this if possible at all.

I recently did this method on a current project but after a few clicks here and there it suddenly stopped executing the technique. I'm stuck on the part where you select the objects after making it your object to a marker, it just refuses to ADD NODES. Is there a way to "refresh" this on Inkscape? Thanks.

A very useful lesson as always. I wonder how I can taper a path with a pattern or marker on it, that follows the tapering. I tried with marker and pattern along path effect but failed. Let's say I wanna have dots on a 3/4 circle, the dots start small then end in a bigger size. Do you have any idea how to do that in Inkscape? Thanks, Nick.

very intresting, i thing the polygon tool allow more cutom nodes like 3 5 7 or any amount of node we want
can we apply these effect on a non path converted object like basic circle ?
and in this case of closed loop put two markers at begining and at end is not useful a maybe overload inkscape

So helpful! Thanks for this tutorial. I have a question, though: another issue with put object/text on path is that the elements are put perpendicular to the tangent on the path- so a wave-shaped text block has the tops tilted in a variety of directions. Is there a way to establish the same 'vertical' orientation for all objects in one or the other of these approaches?
Photoshop, which I can't afford, has presets for lots of kinds of text box deformations that keep the orientation of the letters vertical. I would think that Inkscape, as an actual vector program, would have some way to achieve the same result.
