    1. Tableau/engine building (pure satisfaction)
    1. Worker dice placement (always so clever)
    1. Income (so rewarding)
    1. Market with speculations (so interesting with ressources production/management)
    1. Multi use cards (choice of elegance)
    1. Area influence (spreading your player color on a map it's insanely amazing)
    Too hard to choose among those mechanism. I also love hand management, tech trees, drafting.

    My faves are Tableau Building, Worker Placement, and Tile Placement. I'm starting to come around to closed drafting. I may also be drifting away from dice based games.

    Great video! I remember you talking about doing a list like this; glad you did! And your challenge for next year sounds like fun. I might join along. I also appreciate that you included recommendations along with each mechanism. My top 12:
    12. Deck Building (Dominion, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Obsession)
    11. Route Building (Nucleum, Ticket to Ride, Tsuro)
    10. Open Drafting (Duelosaur Island, Canvas, Endeavor: Age of Sail)
    9. X and Write (Railroad Ink, Dinosaur Island: Rawr and Write, Draft and Write Records, Twilight Inscription)
    8. Tile Placement (Planet Unknown, Sprawlopolis, Wayfarers of the South Tigris)
    7. Resource Management (Sabika, The Great Wall, Ezra and Nehemiah, Parks)
    6. "Bumpin' Tracks" (Scholars of the South Tigris, Planet Unknown, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Tapestry)
    5. Action Selection (Voidfall, Ark Nova, Sankore: The Pride of Mansa Musa)
    4. Worker Placement (Everdell, Darwin's Journey, Terracotta Army, Barcelona)
    3. Engine Building (Inventors of the South Tigris, Scythe, Expeditions, Zhanguo: The First Empire)
    2. Tableau Building (Wayfarers of the South Tigris, Everdell, Obsession)
    1. Dice Worker Placement (The White Castle, South Tigris Series, The Artemis Project)

      Ohhhh! That's an amazing list! Action selection is a good one! That would be close to my top 12 as well. 👍🏻😊 Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching and thank you for sharing your list. It's really cool to see!

    Lovely idea for a video! Getting to know the names of mechanics explains a lot about why certain games keep coming back to me. I really enjoy engine building, and asymmetrical plays (either in set-up or during play). There are some worker placement games I don't enjoy but I like the concept.
    I didn't know trick cards were an actual mechanic, because I just played with poker cards, but it's very easy to take out when travelling.
    Other mechanics you mentioned I don't have much experience with, still kind of new to the hobby, but I think deck building like in Concordia I will enjoy quite a bit

    Tableau building is weird in BGG. It's not under Mechanisms, but if you look under Family, there is one that is Mechanism: Tableau Building. Not sure why it's that way.

    Probably my favourites would be: deck building, engine building (either card placement or table au placement, if that's too broad), and dice placement.
    Great video Jenna! Love the recommendations for your fave games in each category (as well as newbie suggestions).

      All great ones! I also do love engine building! I guess that does go hand in hand with tableau building. 👍🏻 Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed! 😊

    Before the video:
    1. Tike placement
    2. Worker placement
    3. Hand management
    I am interested to see if that changes after watching yours and your recommendations 😍

    Damn, that whole mechanism-slash-mechanic totally pulled me out of the game vibes completely 😢 just stick to one term, they are similar enough...preferably the one on BGG. Also, I get you don't wanna show all the games, but a secondary picture with the game play besides the game cover would have really helped 😄

    This is one of my favourite videos of yours so far Jenna, thanks.
    So many of the mechanics you rated here would easily make my list (but I can't believe that BGG doesn't list engine building or resource management as mechanics)
    2025 is going to be so much fun breaking out some of my favourite games each month for the Solo Focus on your Discord server. Can't wait!

    Is engine building not a mechanism? Because if it is it would be my favourite followed by X & writes and push your luck.

    • @TheBoardGameGarden
      @TheBoardGameGarden  12 днів тому +1

      Yeah it's the weirdest thing. Both tableau building and engine building. Which I guess both could be considered the same mechanism. Nice choices! 😊👍🏻

    • @rickytheleaf
      @rickytheleaf 12 днів тому

      @@TheBoardGameGarden Thanks! I guess it's just too broad to be considered a mechanism.

      @@TheBoardGameGarden I suppose the difference is noticeable in a game like Wingspan/Wyrmspan: you can't start your action with the middle bird/dragon in a habitat but you always start at the far right end. It's an engine that follows a set sequence of actions.
      Whereas in Earth I believe your tableau builds out in a way that you can start your action almost anywhere

    I think it would be so hard for me to rank mechanisms just because I feel like there are several mechanisms that I really enjoy equally (or very close to equally). Looking forward to the mechanism related solo focus next year.

      @TheBoardGameGarden  12 днів тому

      It was soooo hard! I went through my Top 100 Games and tallied up all the mechanisms and did so much prep! It was fun though!😊 Can't wait for the solo focus next year. Should be fun. 👍🏻

    So pronunciation of La Granja (one of the top games on my "need to play list"). Spanish pronunciation would mean the "J" is pronounced with an English "H" sound. However, the game is set in Mallorca, which uses a dialect similar to Catalan instead of Spanish. If the title is read in a Catalan way, the J would be pronounced with a soft "G" sound like German or Jelly.
    So both are probably fine. I'm not sure what the designer or initial publisher has said.

    My commrade in X and writes. 😊 they are my absolute favourite. They scratch all the itch that I’m looking for with solo play.
    I’m super excited to play the Cascadia x and write.
    I keep three sisters, rolling realms and fliptown in my lunch box and they get alot of play when I have downtime at work.

    My favorites so far are: dice worker placement, dice drafting, and chaining. Love big chains in roll and writes and even more when you can chain in a big euro game as well.

    For some reason, I can't imagine enjoying a game that centers around pick up and deliver, but I do really enjoy it as a small piece of Horrified so who knows!!!

    • @andyn2854
      @andyn2854 12 днів тому +1

      @@RopiplupYeah, the pickup and deliver in Outer Rim is great - and I love that it’s got different varieties, with more traditional delivery of cargo to a specific place, but also collecting crew you need for a job at a specific place (which is its own kind of pickup and deliver), and even the way you go to certain places to interact with certain encounters or crew and bounties. It’s like it’s all pickup and deliver but multilayered and experienced differently.
