A very large crowd in our little town of Bowie, of 500 people, turned out to watch this! Big Boy stayed her over 30 minutes, and all of us had a fantastic time.
I don’t know why, but few of the videos I’ve seen of 4014 running lately have really felt like clips of the biggest and most powerful locomotive on Earth. But this one, with the camera angles and the roar of the engine, even from a distance, actually look and sound like scenes from its heyday. THIS is Big Boy.
This looks to me to be the longest consist so far on the Race Across America. I suspect the SD70 9072 brought some of the cars to the excursion and then returned with them afterward. The EMD 2551 has been in the consist since leaving Cheyenne.
7:15 if I'm not mistaken, I think that's the same spot where Southern Pacific Train 7551 East Jumped the tracks which was the first of three trains that lost control in Cajon Pass.
That has got to be the longest excursion train I have ever seen! What.. 23 or 24 cars plus the 2 "helpers" and the canteens? Like ,maybe a bit over a half a mile of train. 4014 had to work at that. 'Axe
you have some excellent footage in here, they people know where to stand to film it and how to have the sun behind them to get some great vantage points
The diesel is used for dynamic braking. If it didn't the flues in the smoke box would clog with soot and they would end up rebuilding her again. Remember this engine was built to pull thousands of tons of freight through the Wasatch Mountains. Not 20 some passenger cars.
It’s my understanding the diesel is powered up to provide electrical power to the cars. That’s why when they did the runs from LA to Barstow they had two diesels because of the extra cars on that run. That big ass steam engine doesn’t need help from a diesel!
The primary purpose of the diesels was for dynamic breaking on downhill runs. I was there, and I can confirm that the big boy was indeed working when running uphill.
@@TrainTrackTrav fyi dynamic breaking cannot be used in the throttle positing seeing as how i have ran bnsf diesel locomotives and dynamic braking can only be applied when the throttle is in neutral then it goes over then back on that lever for dynamic braking , not while in forward notches,
When i was there to see big boy coming in Victorville, steam smoke smell like oil mixed with fresh baked pretzel. It’s strange smell, but nice smelling

I just wish my dad had lived long enough to see big boy running again. Roll on, 4014. Roll on.
I am modellrailroader from Russia. I love US steam locomotive - 4-4-0, “micado", "challenger" and diesel's.
Big Boy - the best!
The roar of that whistle will never get old.

Man, you had the BEST seat on the whole train!

This wasn't even a load for 4014. At 6000hp, it's the equivalent of three EMD SD40 diesels.
THE COLONEL How did/does one get tickets to ride it? I called omaha and the Wyoming shop and could not find anyone who could tell me. 🤔
Boy in really great landscape. 👍
Waiting for the Big Boy to come to Benson,AZ!

Great video. Just such a shame 4014 couldn't roll back to the original display spot under steam!

UP "Big Boy" 4014 is one awesome SOB!!!
The king of the rails
Fantastic Big boy .
from France ...
Big Boy is big enough to puff around USA on his own.by now . Does U.P. have confidence in their rebuild ? There are two locomotives always in tow.

@@roberttuttle5405 Thanks , now i know why,,,
Is she articulated?
Simplesmente, SHOW! Belíssimo vídeo parabéns!
some of the footage indicates that the big boy wasn't draggin' but that the big diesel was pushin
From the audio the two dsl freight engines are definitely powered up.

So the diesel engine is there as a backup powerplant and to run all the electrics for the cars as far as I understand?
No it's there for dynamic breaking and to activate signals.
Some day the diesel is pushing, I don’t know, but who cares, the 4014 is completely operational and that’s all I’m concerned with. 😎
That's a big steam engine! She dwarfs the diesels behind her.
8:10 anyone know what that song is called?
I've got the impression the machine has a big lack of power, may be because of the oil burner
Doesn't matter how you make the steam, Big Boy is rated at 6920hp, pretty sure the diesel is a backup and also to run the electricity for the cars
Well, maybe...
Engineering wonder ! S u p e r. Regards
oh those diesel units are working going across that bridge; clear as day
Only if this isBurning coal will it be more beautiful that is an impressive piece of machinery
This train burning natural gas?
Big boy burn an used motor oil. The one you drained the oil from your car.
@@butthurt8 Thanks. Was wondering because it didn't look right.
@@timberwolfpowler8747 Yes that. Actually its No 5 oil.
Timberwolf Powler also, UP 844, and 3985 all burn used motor oil.
