    My 3-year-old grandson watched this with me. I remember some steam locomotives were still in service when I was his age. They may be rare, but the steam locomotives always fascinate kids. I hope it comes near my current home someday so he can see it live and close up.

    I grew up, spending as much time as possible in the San Bernardino Depot during the heydays of steam! The Roundhouse in "Berdoo" was truly amazing & a joy to watch the huge engines were turned into their bays for service....Another Day & Time, a long time ago! Thank you for sharing this beautifully-done video! Brings back a lot of great memories of steam!

    We caught up with Big Boy here in Tucson on Thursday. I'm not sure who was more excited, me or my 5-year old grandson. The energy potential of this powerful and superbly designed machine would have been equivalent to a small thermonuclear device of the day! Kidding of course, but the power of this beast is over the top.

    Awesome video Kory, thanks for sharing and bringing this video to those that couldn’t make it there. If I still lived in Southern California, I would’ve been there in a heartbeat. This video is extremely helpful for me as I get ready to go into scenery and bridge placement on my layout. Thanks again for posting. - Steve

    Looks like they added an extra engine helper. Is that because of the long uphill climb? Usually it has one engine behind the 4014.

    I volunteer on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum and noticed a gentleman wearing a Union Pacific 4014 Hat this past weekend. I mentioned to him about "Big Boy" and he told me he road to LA on him! We started talking railroad and mentioned about my Dad retiring from Burlington Northern after 25 years as a Switchman and the jobs I went on growing up, taking frieght from the Cicero Illinois Yards to Gary Indiana. What I would have given to be a passenger on such a historical event in Railroading History.

    wow the 2 side by side BNSF trains were awesome.
    so that is a shared double main? for UP and BNSF. I bet that is super busy all day.
    that would have been cool to see. the way you had the camera, the grade looked steep.

    This video is interesting also from a geological perspective. Remarkable landscape, especially as pertains to the whitish rock formations, that jut up bizarrely from the land. Also, I observe that the BIG BOY seemed to be hauling primarily passenger cars whereas most other trains were hauling freight.

      @yupyup3042 4 роки тому

      Cajon Pass is a tough climb for those massive trains. They take it really slow both directions “typicly ascend at 14-22mph and descent at 20-30mph” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cajon_Pass

      I am a truck driver who often drives through there, and it's one of those long steep grades where the heavy trucks are doing about 25 miles per hour it's so steep.
      The road that runs under the tracks is hwy 138, which I often go up, and it gets even steeper once it's past the tracks.

    Is that the actual grade?

    • @ke6gwf
      @ke6gwf 4 роки тому

      That is about half way up the actual grade.
      That entire section of track that you can see in this video is about as steep as you can run trains on, and that's only a fraction of the length of the grade.
      It's hard to see the slope when the entire ground is sloped lol

    wow 27 cars on a grade..that old engine must be working super hard pulling that kinda load!!! on the verge of breaking the old girl..she'll need some major repairs, she's probably never seen than kind of consist in her service life, well if it's over worked and breaks they don't have a schedule to keep.. she just was not designed for that kind of weight!!! she just can't keep up that kind of tractive effort.. !!! maybe 5 or 10 cars tops..
