Transmission "Fix", Making My Minneapolis Moline Mobilift More Mobile!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The last time I tried to use this forklift, I lost all drive in both forward and reverse. Since this is a MY60 Mobilift made by Minneapolis Moline (before the manufacturing of these units was taken over by White), its pretty old. The parts for these things are expen$ive! This forklift is in pretty bad shape overall, so its not worth putting much time or money into it. I'm going to try to get it moving again, the easiest and cheapest way possible.
Really cool to see this channel picking up steam and really start growing. Reminds me of Diesel Creek in the early days. Excited to see things progress!
Its come as a surprise to me, but I sure do appreciate it!
Sometimes that is how it happens. As soon as a spark is generated (realization) it can "burst into flames"! (As a furnace keeping people warm, not a calamity). 😀
I stopped watching DC as if got ridiculous.....it seemed to loose its charm and purpose
Someone once said: perfection always gets in the way of “good enough.”
YES! Always.
FACTS!!
Torx bits are good for those rounded allen plugs, their points match the corners of the hexagon so they are quite easy to hammer in without grinding them before.
True to the Low Buck Garage theme!!!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...
Way too often people fix things by loading up the parts cannon, and pour money on it like it is a free condiment at the salad bar...
As nasty as that filter looked, I’d be suspicious that there wasn’t gunk someplace else in the system that was keeping the oil from flowing properly. If there’s someway you can blow out all the old stuff and get some nice clean fresh stuff in it your problem could be solved. I think you’re jumping to a conclusion thinking that the pump is bad knowing how bad that fluid looked.
was thinking the same thing
In talking to the previous owner afterward, I found out some history on the unit. Apparently for several previous owners and many years its had trouble moving, and all the operators just held it to the floor to get the job done.
All that 'gunk' is the clutch packs. There isn't that much material to start with.
I'm a forklift tech and if I pull a filter screen out and it looks like that, that's all I need to know, she's done.
Small tip that can buy you some time if you drives sluggish, the oils black DO NOT REPLACE THE FLUID - fresh fluid always makes it worse not better, change the filters but put the old fluid back in.
Otherwise it's rebuild the transmission time.
Take a old 5 gallon bucket with a lid. Put your funnels in it. You’ll never have dirty funnels.
Love you man, you inspired me to pick up a free lawnmower and get it running well again.
This channel is a Gem!! Thanks buddy I learned a lot and had fun in the process!
Awesome, thank you!
I would have done it the same, and I’m not gonna be that guy but blowing all that asbestos out of the filter made me pause. You’re probably gonna hear about it. Lol
Shoot, I didn't even think about that. Hopefully I got the dust out during the solvent wash and it was just the bigger pieces in the air. I didn't see any fine dust at all...
I feel your pain. I own a JD 300 backhoe. Parts are like finding hens teeth. And very high if you find them even used. Has always Liked and shared. All my very best.
Very nice approach- I love how you explained the system. And a perfect time to cut and rest I say. Who knows, the old maybe-if-I-just-use-it-now-and-hope-it-frees-up plan may still work. 😎
Little bit of maintanence saves alot of time and money.
Personally i would have replaced the oilfilter and taken the pressure reducer cylinder/brake line open and made sure it moves as it should.
Yeahyeah looking at the lack of lubricant where it needs to be, and excess where it doesnt, i see that youre the type that has more important stuff to do.
But thats all the more reason to use bit of time now to make everything work as it should, rather than using tenfold the time and resources diagnosing and botching a dodgy "fix", that may itself become more severe problem later on.
Nice work figuring out the issue 🙂👍
with out the proper pressure you just burning up the clutches . not enough clamping pressure on clutches
That was a good video. I think I would replaced all the filters with new though. If they were available. But then that is just the way I am.
I really enjoy your channel as I tend to be the same with keeping it cheap and cheerful, not to be dangerous or a scrooge but not spending money I don’t have to. One of the automatic transmission additives may help with the pump and get you some more life out of it. It might be worth noting that on a machine that old the clutches are likely to be asbestos so blowing the particles in your face may not be a good thing to do. I had an old 4 cylinder Clarke forklift and we called it “Donk A Donk” because it only fired on 3 cylinders so that was the sound it made. I changed the head gasket but it turned out to be a bad valve which I didn’t check as it’s was a side valve so I just left it because, like you, it still did what I needed it to. Americans make me laugh when you call threads metric and standard because it’s metric and imperial, as in British imperial. You kicked the British out centuries ago yet you cling on to their archaic system of weights and measures. Even the Brits went metric but that’s ok because we still have the monarch and the Union Jack in our flag. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Custom Allen! Love it. Time to throw in some thicker sae60 motor oil.
If you want more pressure, screw the relief valves in.
"Clearly, this is how these tools should be used..." Maybe the problem was that you needed a 'Metric Hammer' as well..? :)
It would be worth trying to set your main pump pressure .The pump can only build pressure to what your relief is set at, if the relief is off, which does happen, either through wear or junk getting into them, even a new pump won't be able to build pressure
I would replace all that oil with a heavier grade, but thats me.
Try some Lucas transmission fix. The stuff is amazing.
Brilliant fault finding. I wouldn't have known where to start but I do know how big a rag to push through an oil filler! 😀
On thing that might be worth a try, if it takes AW32 oil, try thicker oil like AW68 or AW100. Thicker oil, more pressure.
The pressure your gauges will show will ony be as high as the fluid need to be to do its work. put the machine somewhere against something and watch the gauges, it should go higher if working properly
I thought the same👍
Long long ago...I found and subscribed to this channel when I asked UA-cam " Show me forklifts " and they sent me here. I owe my good fortune to your old forklift. tHanks for the videos!
(Oh and I guessed early on ...inching valve. But I was guessing).
Glad that worked out, and that you like my weird stuff! Funny how things go...
Had to restart the video because I couldn't stop watching the drum wind mill!! What is that??? Love the channel!
Its a Savonius rotor, its an interesting windmill design because it works with pretty much any wind speed or direction with only one moving part. Had to build one just to watch it go...
I've had good luck with using torx bits in rounded off hex bolts, the fins kinda bite in. Great videos, keep it up.
Lol, I liked the filter blooper at the end . I did that with a carb jet for an ATV once but it flew right into the bush never to be found...
It'll be a lot handier now that you don't have to tow it around 😉
I find myself wondering if a new cartridge filter would improve it even further. It couldn't hurt anyway, and shouldn't cost too much.
Me too! That filter are still really dirty.
At least you were true to your channel's name in this repair.
The big question is what it would cost to fully repair the transmission compair to buying a replacement fork lift.
For just the normal wear parts, it was above $1K. That doesn't include bearings, seals, or anything else that came up along the way. If I couldn't get it going, I was going to part it out.
@@LowBuckGarage+1K is just too much. I really liked the way you troubleshooted and used the pressure gauges. It was easy to follow your line of thoughts
This guy's underrated
Since that's an outside truck..it wouldn't hurt to lubricate your lift chains with 90w gear oil..no grease ..too heavy..wouldn't soak through ..also 90w on mast channels..helps rollers to stay rolling ..
Good luck..
That transmissions done unfortunately.
I'm a forklift tech, and if we have a sluggish drive fault and the filter screen looks like that it's the end of the diagnosis.
All that 'gunk' is the clutch packs. If the thing kind of drives and you don't want to rebuild it - DO NOT CHANGE THE FLUID! It always makes it worse, not better.
I fixed a lull of road fork left slash man lift . And it had hydrolic transmission in it and when it got work and try driving up hills it would barley move . Flushed the fluids a filters and it helped a lil bit but it really ended up being out of adjustment and the brake would start sticking . I fixed the brakes and adjusted the linkage going to the pump and it was fixed . That’s why the people before gave up on it .
If the little filter was clogged, what makes you think the big filter isn't also? Ron W4BIN
Hope you didn't spend too much!
EDIT: You won!
Almost got a little disappointed here... for a moment there I saw a 3 hour video infront of me you tearing that transmission/axle apart. That would have been great! But maybe not as great for you...🤔 ha ha.
Are ya still kickin chicken?, what's taking so long to post a video?, are you putting in a perm or what?,😄, hurry every chance ya get!👍
looks like you're having a good tine!
Always!
I love your dry, matter of fact humour.
@16:23 That was why metric was invented, silly goose. 😆
I would bet some of the clutch material is blocking an office in one or all of the valves.
fun channel! Very interesting can't wait to see what's next!
Great video
Thanks!
What's the drum windmill used for? Another great vid. Thanks!
Thanks! I tried it on an air pump, but not enough pressure developed. I'm going to hook it to a water pump at some point, and see how that does.
22:27 YEEET 🤣😂
But hey, if it works, it works. Way I see it, if you've got to split the trans from the engine to get at that pump anyway, you might as well have the whole trans gone through while it's off. Since it will still get the job done it is asked to do, no sense fuckin' with it. Save the pump replacement for when the trans totally fails.
Call me wierd, but to me, that thing has earned a new transmission anyway, so if it were my machine I'd start squirreling away money, parts, preparing to do a trans in it while it still runs.
Apparently your forklift was designed by engineers from Packard.....also a worn out inching valve could cause the low pressure issue it did on Clark lifts when I worked on those.
I am starting to recognize the thumbs up moments 👍
Blue jeans are a decent poor boy 20micron filter, when I am working on old junk like that, I will catch all the hydraulic fluid, pour it through a couple layers of blue jeans, I like the lower legs, I seem to wear my jeans out in the knees and the pockets first, so the lower legs are practically new. Then I'll reuse the fluid if there's not a compelling reason not to. Is it the best method, no, is filtering the fluid to 20micron way better than just leaving it and hoping everything is okay? Sure it is! Lol.
Enjoy your videos, waiting for the next video. 🙂
Thanks. glad you like them!
You would think it would be easier to remove the engine.
It appears from the attempt to travel fast , that the trans is running in hi mode? I think trying to change the ratio into low may yield a satisfying result.
That is a possibility. When I first got it, I thought that was the issue, tried the other gear, and it didn't do any better. I haven't tried it since I cleaned the intake. Since that video it keeps working better every time I drive it, so now I might be able to tell the difference. I'll try it again!
@@LowBuckGarage You can buy heavier viscosity hydraulic oil . That is bound to take up some space?
Well change the spin on filter mr Frugal!
Great How to video on a forlkift that I will never own but I had FUN watching you work on it. Way better than commercial TV or other brain rot. Carry on dude and cheers!
We have a 50 year old cat diesel forklift and one day the transmission quit working all together. When we took it apart we found out the main shaft that came in from the engine, all the splines were broke off 😂 yup that'll do er easy fix and still going good after an engine rebuild
I completely understand why the high and low lever was disconnected because it's frozen together with the forward-back lever but I would suggest trying to switch it manually to see if the other range might work better
I did eventually try that, it was in low range already, and when I switched to high it was worse. Luckily, the intake screen cleaning I did here has made it better. A couple of days ago I towed a 22' rv across the yard with it.
Unfortunately, engineers have not been standardized. Sometimes renegades sneak through and are able to put their designs into production without any viable oversight.
I would put in some Lucas stop leak and conditioner to the transmission it could be gunky inside and Lucas did work on a slipping turbo 350 and worked through the snow plowing (used as a backup and manually shifted
This repair reminds me of the old song "there's a hole in the bucket dear Lisa dear Lisa, there's a hole in the bucket, ahol then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it."
A real informative look at a hydraulic system. Of the utmost interest to me at present, now that's lucky.
If you have a stuck Allen socket screw that you need to get out, use a Torx driver to get it out. Use whatever Torx driver fits the tightest. This works so well that I never use the Allen head driver in any socket head screws anymore, I only use a Torx driver in those screws whether they are stuck or not. Stuck Allen head drivers almost always round out the fasteners, but the Torx drivers never do if they fit even somewhat tightly.
16:09 from there you'll find out why I fucking hate Allen and Torx type fixings.
another great learning video for me love these hands-on how to videos
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Take your Allen wench to the bench grinder and grind off 1/4” . This gives you new edges to work with.
Change the other FILTER.
It's probably one of the reasons why Minneapolis Moline is no longer around because of design snafow's like that
Love LBG Uni. and professor lectures. When do schedule the exam calendar ?
Dump a gallon of Lucas oil treatment in it, thicken it up a bit
checked comment section just to see if someone had already suggested this... !😅
Best bet for challenge at hand.
Why can’t we call it mr forky
@16:41 That has been used in aviation for decades. It is called "Tallen". (Get it? 😉). 🦅
I like it! Now I've got a new name for them.
The old Allis runs pretty good and seems it will serve your purpose well. Hope ya find the keys. 👍😒🤞
Always remember, a wise man once said, ''It's only temporary, unless it works.''
I like that!
I'd fit a new filter still may be restrictive and its also the cheapest part
Hey I liked the white board explanation .Why are the allen keys you need to get out always the striped ones ?
Works for me.
Congratulations! Apple just showed its forth commercial during this video...I'm only at 16 minutes.
Apple & UA-cam know this is a good channel.
Thanks, I must be accidentally doing something right! I wish you guys didn't have to sit through them, but it does help me have more time to work on videos.
Still could be worse
Thank You for the circuit diagram. It is interesting how electronics are so much like "plumbing" or rather Hydraulic Systems. I don't understand either. 😂Really, though. That diagram I can understand. It really is just a matter of "wrapping" your head around it. It is a loop. (Just don't get your head too close). 🙂 Love Your Work and Machines. You will be getting a plaque in the mail.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it!
AH , The things you can learn on your channel , very good video .
Whats the La Forza in background about?
Wow, very few people know what that is, good eye! I'm on the hunt for the front CV shaft (the larger spline one), once I get that I can make it a 4x4 again.
Why do I see no oil ??
Great practical explanation. Good compromise to use it as it is
😎👍🇺🇸
👍
🤠
Justin for the "low Buck" win!! Lol
Onward!
A successful project so you can work on other projects! What’s not to love?
You need a electric funnel cleaner, only $99
Fixed
@21:50 We LOVE Mr. Forky! 🍴🛻
Haha!!! I loved the drawing on the diagram!!!!
Thanks for the feedback! This was the first time I tried that, glad you liked it.
Good TSing technique
hell yeah new video
