  • Hello! Do you know when to use the wedge method to manage your worm bin vs using the ping pong method?
    I use each depending on the status of the food in my bin. Food?! Yep!
    Come along and see what I’m taking about 👍❤️🪱.

I had talked to you and not her lol so told her what it was all about, and said sorry I was talking to my friend over the pond. She thought I ment a real pond lol . Her memory is getting worse again at the moment… hopefully it’s the time of year and pressure put on her and as and when that decreases her memory may be more stable again. Wow the website looks really good, liking the colours and layout, easy for people to see what’s what.
    I’m so pleased you are selling cacoons as many don’t. And here in the uk no one does. It’s annoying as would of thought it’s safer to post caccons then worms and praying on postage etc. would of thought the caccons are more stable and less likely to die.
    That’s what I was told to look for when I started was caccons as I was willing to wait for worms and watch as they grew but couldn’t get them- like anywhere. And still can’t as was looking 6weeks ago when I started my breeders with the new worms I got. And outta 500 worms 445 were breeding age so that’s where I started the breeding from.

      Yes, that’s a common complaint with uncle Jim’s and other big operators. Too many blue worms in their ‘red worm’ mix. Blue worms are great composters - it’s nothing against the worms themselves. It’s more of being a little fast and loose with descriptions on the seller side 😡.

    Your bins move so quickly that I guess it's important to have strategies in your arsenal like this! I just pulled some of my first batch of precompost to give to my worms, so I'm anxious to see if that goes much faster than my pre-inoculated stuff. Gonna try it with my ANCs just cuz they're stupid fast with the bedding already.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  10 місяців тому

      It’s a good way to use them after we’ve used them for lunch or spills or whatever. They also provide a small additional absorption function for the wet food stuffs. Use of dry cardboard or paper or other dry materials (leaves, coconut coir, etc) work just as well 👍
      When I run out of used napkins I either use a few strips of newspaper or just lately, I’ve started using bananas peels! It gives me a ‘base’ to build on. Not required or even necessary but somehow it appeals to me 🙄😊. I have skipped adding any ‘base’ at all if I simply don’t have anything handy but I do like having it 🤷‍♂️😍. Weird huh?

      I enjoy picking out cocoons. The problem is the time needed to do that. I’m always running out of time 😡. I choose different answers/solutions depending on my time situation. I opt often to continue to dry the castings down, resift, and place the new overs into a cocoon bin. It add volume to that bin because there’s always. A fair amount of castings that go along for the ride. It’s a trade off and a game day decision! ❤️🪱

    how long do you take to dry them out enough for sifting like that

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  10 місяців тому +2

      Hi Jay! Welcome! The time it takes to dry down the castings depends on what method I’m using. I’m currently a big fan of the…fan! 🤣. I’ve set up a drying station on part of the dining room table where a fan can blow across the bin surface. I mix in the dried out top a few times a day and bring the damper castings to the surface. I can usually start sifting the within 2 days. I don’t run the fan constantly but as much as I can. I also usually do 2 sifts. The first is the remove all the bigger pieces - the overs that do not go thru the 1/8” screen. This first sift eliminates a lot of the moisture holding pieces so the rest dries down faster.
      I’ve used cardboard fins stuck into the castings as a dry down method. I like that one too if I want a slow dry down for some reason. That can take several days.
      Obviously ambient humidity plays a roll too.
      I’m also trying to be more patient and let the castings dry down more than I have in the past so sifting is easier. If the material barely hold together when squeezed, that’s is ideal. Did this help at all? 😳🙄🤗

    • @jaychet
      @jaychet 10 місяців тому +2

      @RockinWorms yeah, I will try to mix through more often next time I try to take castings.
      I'm using an urban worm bag system predominantly, and each time I harvest it has a tonne of tiny baby worms in with the casting also, so I usually end up throwing it back to save harming them.
      should I just leave it alone for a good few months maybe before trying to harvest? there is plenty to keep the worms going as it is almost to the top.
      I put castings in a large , flatter tray and then try to sift from there after a few days.
      as yet haven't really taken any castings I'm able to use though

    • @jaychet
      @jaychet 10 місяців тому +1

      when I do harvest the bag though, what comes out is very wet and fairly compressed, thats why I didn't want to leave too long in the past .
      getting a bit frustrated now though. as don't know what to do for the best

      @@jaychet Getting cocoons and/or wisps out of wet castings is THE challenge I think of worm wrangling. No matter if you use a bin or a bag or a CFT, sooner or later, and it’s usually sooner and often (!!), you have to figure out how to deal with that situation. The first thing I’d do is reach out to the UWB people and ask their advice. I know, whimpy, but it is what I’d do. I imagine they get this question ALL the time. I’d be very interested in hearing their response!
      In the meantime I’d do what I do, which takes time and space unfortunately. I’d take the compacted castings and crumble them up in that shallow pan or bin you mentioned and slowly dry them down, mixing gently often to break up clumps. Clumps hold moisture and those tiny little buggers can hide and live in them for a long time. As the dry down time happens I’d simultaneously employ a migration method (.your choice, many will work) to remove castings that no longer have to babies. If I planned on having g a nursery bin I’d also scoop out the food zone with globs of babies in it and place into the nursery bin or temporary holding bin m. Replace the food lure as needed. Rinse and repeat. It’s one method I am planning on using for Orange Julius, which you will see in this coming Friday’s video, has compaction ‘issues’ too. As you remove the babies from the food zone and castings overall, you’re also simultaneously using the light separation method. Samantha at Meme’s worms says she uses the light migration method on tiny babies.
      You can also do what you suggested and place the castings in another container, a bin or bucket, and ‘finish’ the castings. Finishing castings is the fancy word for letting the babies grow up and then separating them out by migration or baiting. Again, at the bottom of it, it also takes time plus space for separate bins or buckets. It’s one reason I’ve avoided large deep bins and bags until now, when I’ve been driven by space limits to employ bigger bins. There’s trade offs and pros and cons. You have to figure out what works best for your unique situation. I’m going to be grappling with this too as Orange Julius keeps working. 😡. I wish I had an easy answer for both you and me! And all the others dealing with this exact challenge.
      What do you think you’re going to try first? Other than asking UWB what they suggest. ❤️🪱🪱

      @RockinWorms that's great. thankyou for taking the time for such an in depth reply. I think I will reach out to uwb company, but in the meantime set up a dedicated tote as a nursery bin.
