Hi Thanks for watching. I am in eastern Canada, I got my worms years ago from a lady on Kijjii that was selling them out of New Brunswick, she shipped them to me on the bus. I have been growing them for about 4 and half years now and have many bins from them. Not sure if she still sells them or not, but you could check Kijjii.
The long stringy stuff off the coco coir takes much longer to break down in the bin. It's in all my harvested bins, doesn't have any effect on the plants.
Yes, it is a good idea to wet cardboard or newspapers before adding them to the worm bin. The only time I would not recommend this is if you are trying to dry out a worm bin that is too wet. Just add them in dry to soak up the extra moisture in the worm bin.
We've got lots of small snails (bit bigger than a grain of rice) and fruit flies in the bin. Should we take the snails out and do something about the flies?
Is your bin outside? I would probably remove the snails if you want to use the castings on house plants but the fruit flies just get everywhere don't they😅 try a vinegar trap and some sticky traps for the flies and if you're in the US get some mosquito bits. But if your bin is outside you probably just have to live with the little visitors, sorry! My attempt at an outdoor bin has been given over to nature.
@@eleanoraddy4683 yes, it's outside. I actually had no issues with snails before then a friend gave me a few more worms. They came with the soil she had and I think that's where the whole snail issue came from. I'm hoping they break down the food faster and the worms can eat what they poop out or something. Then I wouldn't mind. But if they competed with the worms, I'm thinking of harvesting them for the chickens :D The fruit flies though, I see no way around them!
@@Norbingel I can't see them directly competing with the worms as they feed differently but maybe a bit extra leafy stuff on top for the snails would put you more at ease? Also birds love to eat snails so you might get some birds visiting
@@Norbingel oh well if you have chickens to feed then I would definitely add a bit of extra snail salad to your bin and cultivate yourself a population of delicious chick treats! The shells are good for their egg shells and you know they love to eat them!
Any colour printing now a days on fliers uses food grade ink. Meaning that it is made with soya and is not in away harmful to your worm population. Just stay away from waxy type flyers as they have a thin wax layer over to so the worms have a hard time getting to it.

Can you add bokashi precompost food or bokashi bran??
Good question, I have never made bokashi before and used it so I can't really say for sure.
Is it normal to have roots in the worm castings? It looks like its eaten up coconut coir. Its been about a month since I added any coir.

@@eleanoraddy4683 the bin's covered well enough to protect against birds so I'm not really worried. But our chickens could use the treats :D
