Gaming History: Black and White "The last great God Game"

  • Black and White - The first creation of Lionhead was also its greatest. Black and White was a strange mix of strategy, pet simulation and puzzle that may have had issues, but at least in this one you could see the trees grow. Also, you could train a giant cow to terrorize an island of defenseless human beings.
(Game Description) Black & White is a god video game developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows in 2001. The game was published by Feral Interactive in 2002 for Mac OS. Black & White combines elements of artificial life, strategy, and fighting games. The player acts as a god and takes control over villages. The goal is to defeat Nemesis, a god wanting to destroy all others and take over the world. A primary theme is the concept of good and evil, and the atmosphere is determined by the player's behaviour. Black & White features a unique element: a creature who acts as the player's servant, and whose personality is shaped by its interaction with him. Multiplayer is supported over a local network or online.
Peter Molyneux led the three-year development of the highly anticipated game, originally to feature wizards instead of gods. Black & White was written from scratch using a great deal of custom software, and the intention was to have the main user interface free of icons, buttons, and panels. Versions for games consoles were in development, but cancelled.

i never heared of sacrifice and will check it out. But till know i wait for game that can compete with black and white 1.The graphics are acceptable, one can get used to them after a short time. I prefer to get used to graphics and play games like dungeon keeper 2 and Black and White 1 instead of picking a game with good graphics and nothing else to offer. The ladder is the common case into todays released games sadly :( (black and white 2 included)

I played it a bit when I was younger and it was very charming. Just got to play it again now and god I'm hooked! After reading some guides, the creature raising thing is quite complex, more than I originally thought. And it takes a lot of time and care to raise it properly, or at least to make it do what you want it to do on its own. The music is also very climatic, simply wonderful. The video is spot on about village micromanagment, though. It gets tedious, specially when you have several villages and just flying through one you start hearing their demands over and over. However, they mostly need you to build and procreate. You can provide them with woods and they'll be sort of fine by themselves mostly. There's an interesting guide I found somewhere on the internet that states that if you're micromanaging your villagers or giving them everything yourself, then you're doing it wrong because they get used to that and become lazy. Anyway, pretty complex and fascinating game.

Pro tip: never set Female villagers as breeders. Female villagers can work jobs while being pregnant (they do drop out briefly for the baby) so you should only ever assign men as breeders. One male breeder can knock up a ton of female villagers while they mostly stay productive.

Have to say Lionhead was really onto something at one point. This game and even the second were very memorable. So was the first Fable. Those games had a certain charm to them. Could tell you were playing a Lionhead game by their art, the voices, the humor, the music...all created something that makes me feel rather nostalgic now. First B&W came out when I was in middle school. lol Me and a friend played it together. To top it off they closed their studios on my birthday. :(

Those wonderful games I fondly recall today, Dungeon Keeper or Black and White, amongst many others, often have one thing in common: Peter Molyneux. People can attack him all they want, but he personifies two aspects many game developers lost today, two expressions of utmost importance, gaming's heart if you will, and that is creativity and imagination.

11:55-13:26 I think you've just nailed down the problem with most old and even more recent God games, *too much micromanaging.* You as the god are yes responsible for the cycles of nature, maintaining the order of the world, such as bringing the rains, creating the cycles of seasons, and setting certain guidelines or sacred laws, everything else should be left up to *your mortals, weather they interpret your actions and words as good or outright defying you should be a part of the experience.* Like take your "avatar" (servant?) cow's mechanics and apply them to the villagers, maybe with some tweaking ofcourse to compliment the existing ones. I'm not saying *the mortals* don't need or want you as their deity, but rather as their "God" these beings *can and should be able to not only take care of themselves (when you've done your part in maintaining natural forces) but go one step further and let them be proactive,* like they one day decided to build another temple in your honor or actively make war on enemies, or even do things that you hadn't even thought of before! *Who knows maybe some mortals might even impress you so much you decide to ascend them to demigods, that should be an engaging mechanic,* a way of your mortals to give back, a return on your investment. And not just in them carrying out your will (as they may interpret it) but even rebel against you, do things to spite you, maybe even at some point grow bold, *some may even outsmart or outwit you, sure you might be upset but at the same time you're pleasantly surprised.* After all myths are full of clever or bold mortals challenging and even beating gods, not often in the sense of killing them, more like outsmarting or denying a god something, tales of heroes and the like. (even if at your expense!)
edit: I'm thinking *a tweaked version of the "nemesis system" from the middle-earth series could be interesting in creating memorable mortal followers.* Sort of like heroes of myth ranging in their abilities and accomplishments, from a guy who can talk to animals and uses that to con people into believing they are a chosen "prophet" of the gods, to a badass warrior who could even slap away your godly hand because he's just that powerful, *at some point even a god has to fear his own creations,* that would add an element of tension and temperament to the experience!

If you found the villager micromanagement annoying than you'd probably like #2 quite a bit. The villagers are a lot smarter and can function by themselves, they won't necessarily be super efficient but they weren't totally clueless. You also had a option to train villagers into warriors and have them auto defend your settlement or raid other villages.

Normally I'm against torrents but considering your choices are either A) Download it via torrrent or B) Buy a used physical copy, I'd say torrents are justified. Either way Lionhead won't be seeing any money from you so go for it.
Edit: Also for Win10 I've heard the fan patches and a No-CD crack will get it to not only run in Win10 but also at widescreen resolutions.

This game blew my mind when I was a kid, it was so strange. It is good to be bad in games ^^ (had to wait 3 years before I owned a computer that could run it though) A game I could play a single map for 12 hours straight with always something to do. Loved B&W2 as well despite its faults, but I hate the lack of opposing GOd. I think one of the flaws of the B&W is not letting you choose from any animal from the beginning, and maybe have enemy animal be random. And I never enjoyed the sequel with necromancer God. I liked the first game because the universe was so much fun with different Gods with funny personality. I know its heresy but I loved Fable 3, I played a evil sexy lesbian bitch that ruined everything and took all control for herself. Was fun.
10:30 yeah I liked the city simulation and expanding a lot, which Is why I prefer B&W2. But fck it was annoying, and difficulty and tedious at times, and sometimes the villagers just stop producing food.

i love B&W too! also the sound track was much better than that of B&W2!
i especially love the singing stone melody, and of course the Sailor's song xD
if you want you can check out a creature fight near the singing stones :) /watch?v=yYFwmfFzrSY

Did you ever try the multiplayer? And yeah, it's a shame you can't buy the damn thing anywhere. Same with The Movies.

Dar numele si producatorul este roman, asa ca am dreptul sa vorbesc si in romana.... Am cerut o sugestie, apropo, de ce sa vorbesc in engleza strict la mine in tara? Fiecare vorbeste in ce limba vrea :). Vorbeste tu pe strada in limba Engleza, si o sa te ia toti la misto, ca vrei sa pari inteligent. BIne, producatorul de clipuri de pe acest canal are alt obiectiv, acela de a avea un public mai larg, si de acea vorbeste in limba engleza, dar noi, putem vorbii in romana :D

Hi, welcome to UA-cam, UA-cam isn't in romania, it's in a non-material plane of existence known as: The Internet.
Your system would work for video work, but don't expect miracles. Recording gameplay from it will be difficult with any game released in the past 3 years, and expect encoding times to be very long. You will run into a lot of headaches because of the performance of the sistem. Still, there's nothing stopping you for trying.

I made a portable version with extra creatures:
      mega(dot)nz/#!9pkjGIZA!PcRhy1hmgrf3IK_cUwIt9_uxDLZ3bQo5T0Gqind7Txk
Just make sure to go to Setup.exe and select your resolution, then go to runblack.exe to start it.

well I do like ur video but u said that u have to build everything well I was building on the 3rd land and I saw houses that I didn't put down on the opposite side of my village and but it was only three houses wich is weird and I stay in one area and slowly work my way around so I do think the villagers do build just not a lot

I disliked the increased focus on the peoples while making the creature less important & more predictable. Miracles suffered too.
It was a fun town building simulator, but what the original game really needed was more autonomous villagers, not more interaction with them.

i don't think so the bond with the creature was lost you didn't train him the miraclees you bought them with the currency the building system was a bit better but the armies weren't a good addition with me and on the creature part before it felt like a real pet for example it says your creature will eat more of that food but it doesn't say what it ate so you have to quickly observe your surrounding to find the most likely thing so it felt like a real pet you couldn't just see his mind and change stuff at any time the grapgics were better tho i just think that the god part was kind of undermined
