I still remember the 2 biggest risks my god faced in this game. Deforesting the entire island... and teaching my tiger Fireball. My tiger apparently decided to practice on my village... ungrateful little jerk.
If you drop a rock in your city, you're people will worship at it. Eventually, it'll gain a glow about it, which makes it an artifact. when you throw the artifact into another settlement, it'll start building belief in you
This game was truly remarkable when it came. Very unique. This kind of game would have been perfect even today.
Thanks for playing this old game, I miss it. The series deserves some modern re-releases.
The reason it isn't working when you try to make people into disciples is because you're setting them down way too roughly (that's why they're screaming), and you're also just dumping them on top of buildings a lot instead of the ground just outside the building. You have to put them down gently for it to work, meaning you let your cursor stop completely over a spot of land, and not too high up. All you were doing was terrorizing people as human baseballs when you tried to give them jobs, because they had too much momentum when you released them, haha. :)
Also, about diminishing returns on winning belief from enemy/neutral towns, the game kind of forces you to vary up your tactics as it reduces belief rewards from the same action over and over. One good thing you can do is gently set a stone down in the middle of your own village ... villagers will dance around it and it will "soak up" their belief. Then, you can either use that belief-infused rock for violence, or simply set it gently in the other village ... it'll release all that trapped believe like a sponge at regular intervals until they're converted. Your creature is also always impressive to them. You can leash him to their town center with the compassion or aggression leaf, either way you want to play it ... you don't want him to destroy the town completely, keep in mind.
I miss this game. :( I wish there was a newer one for it.
With machine learning taking a more prominent standing in game engines, you will see games similar to this happen probably in a couple years with well made AI's. The tech and scripts are pretty damn good now but the hardware with CPU's and GPU's is still a bit lacking for intensive AI.

Massive Black & White fan here. For anyone else loooking for more black and white:
Black and White Ultimate, and Black and white 2 redux mods are as close to black and white 3 we're ever going to get it, they're good too

This game has one of the best intros ever. The music is magnificent!
I'm still hoping for a new version of this game it was so good gaming was an ART form that took so many creative risk rather than just monetory ones.
Try out B&W Ultimate, or B&W2 Redux, redux is amazing

I was 15 when this came out, and miss this! Unfortunately you can't play this game unless it's on a computer with Window XP or less I believe. Can't even find it anywhere

I wish they would remake this game. It was extremely fun.
I had the tortoise creature. He was evil. I taught him mega blast. It was so fun, watching him kill villagers with it.
I have not played this game in way to long! Still don't know what happens when you win the last map :(
This video is old, but here you go with a tutorial how to teach your creature a Megablast miracle, without doing anything, at the first island:
1. Make sure your creature does NOT know any offensive miracle.
2. Teleport to a multiplayer island - the 1v1.
3. Expand your village until you can grab one time Megablast from the center of the island.
4. Show it to your creature.
5. Get back to normal island.
6. Lock up your creature in the pen (the one with the enterence to the temple) with rocks.
7. Give him a LOT of grain.
8. Wait until some of your buildings will be damage from ricochet damage from the temple. That will signalise that your creature mastered Megablast and blow up the rocks in the enterence to his pen.
Bonus. Enjoy a LOT bigger creature.

How did you get the game to run in 1080p?! I've been going crazy, but any other resolution than default puts the frame off centre?

If you enter your actual name, the game randomly whispers your name every 20 minutes or so. I was playing this with headphones on at like 3 am one night. Suddenly, I hear a sinister voice whispering, "Kevin..." I nearly jumped out of my skin. They probably didn't pre-record the word "Nook..." though.
Lol, I was playing this pretty late last night, it started randomly whispering “death”. I didn’t know what was going on
Combine those two things. It gets INCREDIBLY spooky when your name and "death" are being whispered at you. It'll do the death thing when a villager dies sometimes, from memory.

you can use that btw. if you press "p" the game pauses, but you can still run around. then you can look for the villager, pick up the skeleton (or the corpse) and throw it in a teleport miracle. when the villager comes out at the other end of the teleport they will be alive again, and after he/she sleeps at her/his home, the villager is immortal :)

@@Lunuwara you can download a torrent. i bought the game twice a couple of years after it came out, but it's way easier to install, especially on windows 10, if you use a downloaded version that uses a crack
@@Lunuwara You can download it online using an iso file, then install the first two official patches, not the third one though. And lastly, you have to install the fan-made patch. It allows the game to run on a modern OS like Windows 10

Nook, probably you wont answer, but I will still try. How can you get these games (first and second B&W games) nowadays other than downright pirating them? I tried searching and it appears no digital distribution exist, EA themselves have pages for both but not a way to purchase it. Is there ANY way to get it outside retail copies (which are probably too expensive for me to get), or finding a pirate version?

What PC did you use for the game? A modern one? What video card?
The title says it all.
I was always told as a kid that Black & White 1 was garbage, but if that's the case, then why was there a sequel? I was also told that the Sims 1 was garbage, but that game was the best selling pc game in history at one point. Just because an original game in a series isn't as good as it's sequel, doesn't mean it's bad. It just means that the developers did a really good job on the sequel.

i own the CD of this game, but to get it to work on win10 i had to download a torrent and install it using a crack.. then you have to run the game in Admin mode to make sure you can save games in the temple xD

Hah :D I got this back when it came out. Had some weird Pentium II with 266 MHz and 160 Mb of RAM. And a Voodoo 3 which is probably why it ran at all. :D

Probably one of the best games ever made....next to DF of course...problem is the developer Peter Molyneux lost his mind and is now a pariah in the gaming industry, after his newest attempt to make a game called GODUS. His name has become synonymous with scumbag developers. As I watched the video I said to myself, this is exactly what I would expect to happen if Nook became a god. Stone thru a sawmill, same results as when you try that in real life, who would of thought ?

@Nookrium, you meantioned you wanted to play as the tiger but missclicked. i remember vaguely something about you can change your pet into any of the playable creatures in the game by simply editing the name or the creature in the install files.
as far as i remember, /if you have orangutang pet but want to play with tiger pet. then it was something like copy the "tiger file name" and relace the file name of the the orangutang into the tiger name and then also replace the "orangutang pet name file" into the tiger name, and voila you should now have a tiger instead of you swapped both the files names correctly.
this is only if you dont want to find the pet in the world and just want the pet straight away
also a small little trick, if you want your creature to learn kindness and a few spells then in the skirmish mode, let you pet follow your ally's pet for a while. it should teach you a few spells like summon rain, rummon grain, summon lumber and dancing / kindness
anything you do in skirmish mode is persistant to when you play a new skirmish or compaign, so anything your pet learn can be used in other missions too
