I'm Austrian and 10 years ago I did a student exchange and spent 10,5 months in the United States with a host family. Naturally during Christmas time I was especially home sick and sad to be so far away from my family even though host family was and is wonderful. Some time in december back then I was in the living room looking through the CDs and decided to listen to this one and you can't imagine how this song hit me. To unexpectedly find them singing the first part in my native language and then John Denver telling the song's story had me sitting there crying. It made me miss home even more but at the same time it also made me so very happy because it was just such a nice surprise. I will forever treasure this song!
This album, (then cassette, then CD, then download) has been a standard in my house for the nearly 50 years since its release. My daughter grew up believing that the Christmas cookies tasted better when they baked while this played. To this day I place this version of Silent Night at the very top of the list. God bless us everyone.🎄🌠
I remember I used to be a militant atheist… But after hearing this song, something in it just spoke to me on a deep level, one that constantly kept bringing me back to it and listening to it, even when it wasn’t Christmas. The tranquility, peace and quiet kindness of this song just melted my heart in a way that I just never could fully explain. John Denver and the muppets really captured this sense of peace I always had with the song. The story of how this song came to be is also very beautiful and simple. But what’s incredible to me is the very first chapel the song that touched me was sung in was dedicated to the saint that would ultimately lead me to the faith, St. Nicholas. I stand today as a practicing Catholic and love the Lord, and still love this song. Merry Christmas everyone ❤️
BEST Christmas CD ever. How many times I've listened to it and some songs (like this one) just bring me to tears. It's precious and so true. Merry Christmas to all and may peace lie in all of our hearts.
This was always my all time favorite song on the album. It makes me cry. My mom would always turn up the volume a little bit, because she knew I loved it so. Especially in German.
I play this whole album only once per year. It gets played while I put up our Christmas tree. Its been this way since 1981 when i was born and my family had it on tape. I now own it on cd.
Love this version. Some years ago, I made a Christmas mix tape for my sister's family for Xmas, including this track. Her eldest is named Jonathan, and when Miss Piggy said Merry Christmas Jonathan, the reaction was all I could have hoped for. I think he was convinced that she was addressing him personally, I remember years later when I was meeting his fiancé, they played the tape, pointing out the reference. Still loved the reaction.
I remember this album as a child. It started a tradition that, during the morning meal, presents, and activities, we always listen to Christmas music as a family. This is why I know the story of this song, and it's why, for Christmas 1999, I went to Oberndorf to hear it played in the chapel near where it was first heard.
As with many others here, this album carries some of my fondest Christmas memories. I had just graduated college and it was my first Christmas truly on my own. This has stayed with me all these years, became a soundtrack for my childrens' holidays, and now as I wait for the grandkids I'm still listening. There are so many gems that I can't choose a favorite. But I CAN say that this is my favorite version of Silent Night. So simple and sincere, sweet harmonies. Just as it was probably intended from the start. Merry Christmas to all and Peace on Earth.
I listen to this every year, and while decorating my tree...its my childhood.. EVERY year while we got ready for Santa and oh just the magic of it!!...we got to.open ONE present on Christmas Eve...my parents are gone but when I play this, I feel them with me.. Merry Christmas whoever's reading this! And a blessed new year🎅🎄🎁❤
This brings me back to my childhood. Opening presents around the Christmas tree, drinking egg nog, and listening to this on a RECORD. Old school. Love it.
Favorite version of my favorite Xmas song. Maybe bc I'm half-german but the story behind the song is meaningful, the sparseness of the song reflects the poverty of the times as well as Jesus' birth. Schlaf im Himmel cherub - literally "Sleep in heaven, baby"
Nik Groothuis Same here. I put this & Piggy, Gonzo & Robin's Christmas Is Coming on a Christmas Mix CD I did a few yrs ago. Every single person wanted to know where the Muppet songs came from. 😊
My parents owned this masterpiece on 8 track. I had forgotten the Muppets sang it in German to begin. John telling the origin of the hymn is one of the reasons this is my favorite hymn. What a tremendous testament to Mr. Denver. He is sorely missed.
I have the DVD also. The video is not in the greatest of shape but it's cool to watch. How wonderful to be brought laughter and tears on the same album
My father passed that same year and month. December 19th. I remember listening to this album as a kid and watching th e TV special on t.v. here's to our dads.. r.i.p go them both and others who have lost theirs. Have a safe wonderful holiday everyone.
@realherblady I just read your comment and now I'm crying for you, How sad, but I hope you know your baby is an angel watching over you. May you find peace in this season.
@CyraUK Me too. My first child was due on Dec 24th of that year. I had the ALBUM and had a poster. Yes I WAS an adult at the time!! Unfortunately my child dies 4 weeks later.....32 years ago. I still cry.
@realherblady I just read this and am crying for you. I hope you found some peace in your heart. You have to know that your darling baby became an angel and is watching over you at this moment.

I will forever treasure this album and it’s place in my childhood as a 9 year old. 🧡💛 God bless you John Denver and your special legacy.
I absolutely adore the part where John Denver describes how the song came to be
I could put Rowlf and John singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas on a loop and never get tired of it.
One of the best Christmas albums ever produced.
This is my favorite version of Silent Night.
