      Yes, and from what I remember of Leviticus, I highly suspect that even he couldn't touch/see it whenever he wanted; only for certain parts of certain services. Opening it, especially for simple curiosity, was right out.

      @@WilliamMoses355correct. The Priest had to have a legitimate reason. The Sons of Aaron were killed for doing a sacrifice that wasn’t authorized or with proper reverence.
      Opening the Ark out of curiosity definitely falls under irreverence.
      Biblically speaking, if Raiders were to be accurate, the two soldiers would never have gotten the lid off, as they would have been killed just touching the lid. But then we wouldn’t have had that awesome fire-lightning display

    The reason the Nazis were digging in the wrong place is that they were using only the one side of the medallion that burned the hand of that one Nazi. But the "old man" said the other side of the medallion says "take back one kadam...". Since the Nazis never saw that side their staff was too long.

    The plot of the film is not during the Second World War, it is from a few years before, where Hitler's Nazi party was already ruling. This movie represents the reborn of classical adventures movies into a new modern and fresh style. Adventure cinema was reinvented in such a way that many have drawn on these films to inspire later ones (The Mummy saga, National Treasure saga, Tomb Raider videogames and later on the films, Uncharted videogame and movies, etc.)

    Cyn, you may be interested to know the SyFy Channel took that concept of a large, secret, government run warehouse filled with dangerous, mystical artifacts and made a pretty decent series out of it called, “Warehouse 13.” It ran for 5 seasons and starred Saul Rubinek, CCH Pounder, Eddie McClintock, and Joanne Kelly, among others.

    Something worth noting when you go into Temple of Doom is that it actually occurs before this film chronologically. You'll see that Indy is a bit rougher around the edges in some ways and see how he develops into the character we have in this film and The Last Crusade. Each film is more or less stand alone however, with some characters recurring, but the core plot events aren't really part of a larger arc like in many proper trilogies.

    * The beginning of the movie, was an adventure of Indy's called *Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Idol* *of* *the* Chachapoyas *Temple.* Southeast of Chachapoyas, Peru. Not far from what is now called the "ACP Tilacancha National Park". The "Hovitos" was the particular name of one of the local tribes of native Chachapoyas. Their "Warrior/Hunters" were called "Warriors of the Clouds"(which sounds very suggestive). Somehow, they learned stonemasonry(even to the extent of fulcrum levers), and metalworking(they were obviously at the cusp of their "golden" age, because the wooden idol was gilded with gold(it was not a solid gold statuette). That's why the bag was too heavy(also, I think Indy had a block of lead at the bottom of that bag lol).

    Three fun facts about this film:
    1. The big guy that Indiana Jones fights in Marion's bar and the bald German boxer he fights by the airplane are played by the same actor, Pat Roach.
    2. Originally Indiana Jones was going to have a fight with the swordsman in the marketplace but since Harrison Ford was feeling under the weather, they had Indiana Jones shoot him instead. There is behind the scenes footage of the unfinished fight scene.
    3. The villain that burnt his hand with the medallion was originally going to have a cybernetic arm but the idea was scrapped because it was too outlandish even for an Indiana Jones film. However the concept was eventually used for the villain of the Indiana Jones novel called "Indiana Jones and the mystery of Mount Sinai".

    The Peruvian guide Satipo is played by Alfred Molina, who is best known for playing Dr. Octopus in _Spider-Man 2_ . Indy's Egyptian friend Sallah is played by John Rhys-Davies of _Lord of the Rings_ fame. One of the Nazis on the truck is played by Paul Hogan, aka _Crocodile Dundee_ .
    George Lucas and Steven Spielberg based Indiana Jones on 2 things: their love of old adventure serials and James Bond, the latter of which is more evident in the next 2 films.

    Surprised no one’s jd roomed it yet, as it’s likely the most repeated fun fact for this movie, but here goes. The scene in the marketplace, with the man with the large sword and Indy just shoots him was supposed to be a bigger action scene. Harrison improvised shooting him instead because he like nearly everyone else on set during the filing of that scene were sick with food poisoning and he did want to deal with that with a big fight scene so he just took care of it quickly. Its became so iconic and part of Indy’s character, and by extension I think also a bit of the original initial rougher and roguish nature of Han Solo.

    Personally, I would credit some of Indy's creation to the work of H. Rider Haggard, Haggard wrote a series of adventure novels starting in the late 19th century with King Solomon's Mines. His character Allan Quatermain was a Great White Hunter living in Africa who had amazing encounters with ancient civilizations and artifacts. The books stand up surprisingly well and aren't as racist as I had feared, given the time he wrote them and British attitudes toward native peoples.

    It's only hinted at in the movie but the reason Marion's father and indy fell out was because she was underage.(The reason for her remark that she was a child) Indy would have been in his mid 20s and she would have been in her mid teens, though when writing the script Lucas and Spielberg wanted to make her even younger during the affair. Fortunately they changed their minds on that.

    • @aceldamia9114
      @aceldamia9114 Місяць тому

      On a technical level, yeah it is only "hinted," but I really don't think there is anything ambiguous with what they are saying/implying.
      Indy said he had a falling out with pa Ravenwood ten years earlier. At her bar, Marion says she learned to hate him over the past ten years. Which is when her father and Indy had their falling out (obviously because of Marion). She continues on to say "I was just a child" when the events 10 years earlier happened. I guess it is up to you to decide if she was being literal when she said she was just a child.
      But, it's well established that she was 15 when their incident happened, particularly spelled out in the book. As for a more direct connection beyond the novelization, the script flat-out says she is 25.

    • @markcarpenter6020
      @markcarpenter6020 Місяць тому

      @aceldamia9114 I meant the exact reason is hinted at not that they falling out was over Marion. And yeah be glad she was 15. The original idea was to have her at 12 or 13.

    Meh, the hate for The Crystal Skull is far too overblown. There are some very classic Indy moments in it and it works for the most part. The forced “hat” passing to Shia doesn’t quite work because he was/leagues under the charismatic chatter that is Indiana Jones and Harrison himself. However it’s not a terrible movie and despite what many people say, as mentioned here, it still counts as an Indy movie. Just because it’s not great and has issues, it dies by change objective reality. Now you can remove it from your own personal head canon, but that’s another matter entirely. That being said, like mentioned earlier, the stories of the original three are also leagues above the most recent movies. However the newest game nearly gets everything right about Indy, though they do seem to focus on a game play aspect that’s a little contrary I think, but I still very much think it’s a great adaptation.

    Also you should know Temple of Doom the second movie in the franchise is actually a prequel to this movie.
    And the Warehouse at the end actually came back in Crystal Skull, but that’s unsurprising you didn’t pick up on that as i think you have not seen this movie in awhile.

      According to several canon sources Marion was 15-16, Indy was 26. Marion was born in 1909, Indy was born in 1899, they met sometime in 1925.

    According to the Bible, no one is allowed to look or touch what is inside the Ark. If so they suffer the wraith of God. That is why Indie told Marion to shut her eyes and not to look.

    Please react to some other Harrison Ford movies: *Patriot Games* (1992) and *Clear and Present Danger* (1994). Ford plays the Jack Ryan character based on the Tom Clancy novels. Excellent political action/thrillers.

    💫😸Somewhere in your film schedule you ought to make room for a pre-prequel to "Raiders", Charlton Heston in "Secret of the Incas" (1954) so you can see where a bunch of this Jones stuff came from. Plus, it's an interesting little adventure movie on its own, with a bunch of footage filmed on location in 1950s Peru and also features the famous exotic singer Yma Sumac.
    21:19 This scene is a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest", another great must-see which among other things, partly inspired the James Bond movies.

    On the subjected of the violence in the film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released prior to the MPAA's creation of the PG-13 rating on 1 July 1984. Before the PG-13 rating, films which nowadays would be given a PG-13 rating were given a PG rating. As a result, filmmakers who were aiming for a PG rating had a lot more leeway to include violent and graphic content in their films. Another film which would fall into this category is Jaws (1975), another Steven Spielberg film, which got a PG rating at it's release, but which I feel would be given a PG-13 rating if it came out today. Prior to 1 July 1984, the next highest rating after PG was R.
    The PG-13 rating was introduced in response to the violence that many had complained about in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins, both of which had received a PG rating. These complainants argued that despite being given a PG rating, films like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins were too violent and graphic for children. Interestingly enough, it was Steven Spielberg himself, who directed Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and who produced Gremlins, who suggested the introduction of the PG-13 rating, a rating which would bridge the gap between PG and R.

    Remember how Nathan Drake's story intertwines with the machinations of "Deutsches Ahnenerbe", an organisation mixing pseudo science, race theory and the occult? It was founded by the SS in 1935 and, based on timelines, would be a possible backer of this movie's dig in Egypt. Hitler and other Nazis were indeed fascinated with these subjects, looking for "proof" of German racial superiority and Aryan heritage. The events portrayed in Raiders of the Lost Ark are not too out of place in these years shortly before WW2.

    The Ark and other aspects of the Levite priesthood are described in Leviticus. The Ark holds the tablets with the law, a piece of manna, and Aaron's rod? It is mentioned in the battles in Canaan, and David takes it to the first Temple. After that it disappears and is not around in the second Temple. Kings and Chronicles mention attacks on Judah and Israel. Some of the stories are that it was taken out of the Temple and hidden in a tunnel under Temple Mount. Or in a cave near Jerusalem. Knights Templar occupied Temple Mount but only vague rumors they found something. When the Knights were executed, the claim has been made the Freemasons got the Ark and Templar treasures. This is used in the movies _National Treasure_ and _DaVinci Code_.
    There are Myst style point and click puzzle games _The Riddle of the Sphinx_ and its sequel _Omega Stone_.
    Like Lara, Indiana is non-magical but magic adjacent.
