We actually didn't though, did we. It was not an expectation back then that there would be sequels and prequels and trilogies etc. After ESB, yes, but not after ANH... Empire Strikes Back was an awesome surprise. At least to me.

I mean, ILM outclassing the vast majority of other fx studios is like a staple of Hollywood, even nowadays.
It revolutionised sci-fi in 70's and 80's, revolutionised the use of CGI in the '90s and '00s and now in the 2010's and 2020's still is a good mile ahead of most other studios with their visual fx.
Not to mention Lucasfilm's superb use of sfx and the volume, which clearly isn't that easy to convincingly use, if you look at the most recent MCU movie releases.

On Star Wars languages.... yes, various species have their own languages and learning them would be just like an English speaker learning Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, etc.
There is a "Galactic Basic Standard" language that most species at least understand (even if they are unable to speak it like Wookies). When we hear the characters in English, they are speaking in Basic.

You have John Williams to thank for the iconic Star Wars musical score. He was a phenomenal music composer. No, he's not dead. I say "was" because Indiana Jones 5 is almost here, and that's the last film for which John Williams has provided the musical score. He's done the music for a lot of projects like this for a LONG time, so it makes sense for him to have retired.

Something to keep in mind is that the original Star Wars trilogy wasn't meticulously planned out. George Lucas didn't have all the details down for, say, "Return of The Jedi", while he was filming "The Empire Strikes Back". The history of the making of the original trilogy is kind of messy, and a lot of people do claim that Lucas had everything planned out beforehand, but there are plenty of stuff in the movies that prove that theory wrong.
Basically, Lucas started out by writing down a preliminary idea for the characters and the universe, as well as the early concepts for the story. This early draft of the script was known as "The Adventures of the Starkiller as taken from the Journal of the Whills, Saga I: The Star Wars". This would serve as a bible
Fast forward a few years and Lucas was pitching his, by now rewritten, three-part Space Opera idea around to various studios, but everyone turned him down, so he founded his own studio, Lucasfilm, and partnered up with 20th Century Fox for distribution. 20th Century Fox, however, had big doubts about how successful the movie would be, so they took a wait-and-see approach with it, only investing in one movie. George had to do a lot more rewrites, but eventually came up with what we now know as "A New Hope", originally just called "Star Wars".
That's why the first movie feels kind of like a standalone while still being open-ended enough to possibly lead into a sequel: At the time Lucas didn't know if there would be any sequels or not. This is also why we get stuff like Luke and Leia kissing in "The Empire Strikes Back", as he hadn't decided on them being brother and sister yet until he was writing the script for "The Return of The Jedi." It's also why Luke's father and Vader are treated as two different people in the first movie. Lucas most likely had the idea that Vader was Luke's father from the start, but because he wasn't sure if there would be any more Star Wars movies after the first one, he felt like adding another twist to their relationship dynamic like that would just make the movie too cluttered. Once he got the go-ahead to make the sequels, he decided to re-introduce the idea.

I suppose the Star Destroyer goes down in the frame because it conveys the idea that the ship is broken in a fast, visual manner. You could argue that it's in orbit around a planet, so there is a gravitational field; if it's been disabled it can no longer resist that gravity. I don't know.

The Falcon in the asteroid field was the most complex miniature shot at the time. It was quite the achievement!
Also, you saw Vader consulting with the Emperor. The Emperor was a corrupt senator before the fall of the Republic. He twisted Anakin around...
Also, when this was written, Luke & Leia weren't brother & sister, yet. That was a narrative decision in the climax of the next film -- narratively, Lucas needed a reason for Luke & Vader to fight! The twist shocked everyone.

5:45 I find it interesting that it sinks down with no gravity like a sinking ship would."
    Except there is gravity.
That "sinking ship" is in orbit over Hoth.
Hoth has gravity that's pulling on the ship.
Now, if it was truly in orbit, damaging it wouldn't make it leave orbit so it wouldn't "sink".
But if it was, say, way too close and using its own engines to "hover" like a helicopter, then it gets damaged and can't do that anymore, it would "sink" like a helicopter falling out of the sky.
Since that's what it is doing, I assume that latter case applies.

The thing about these movies is that when George Lucas made them, he didn't even know that Vader was Luke's father and that Luke and Leia were brother and sister. He did it out of storytelling necessity since he had included Yoda's line in this movie about there being another hope for the galaxy if Luke should fail, so rather than introduce a brand new major character in the last movie of the trilogy, not knowing if he was going to make more Star Wars movies after that, George made Leia Luke's sister. Same with Vader. Vader and Anakin were originally separate characters, but if having Anakin in the movie as well as Obi-Wan and Yoda, that's alot of Jedi still around, so he just combined Anakin and Vader into a single character. So when Leia kisses Luke at the beginning of the movie, they weren't siblings yet. Also Luke's emotional reactions in this movie was a result of a different director. George was never good about showing emotion or directing actors to show emotion, so that's why Luke seems emotionally stunted in the previous movie.

    • @SamG-13

The story is the "there is another" was added because Mark Hamill got into a serious motorcycle accident before this movie, and Lucas wanted some room to maneuver in case something happened before any later movies. The wampa attack might have been thrown in to explain the new (real) scarring on Mark's face.
There's also a rumor that Lucas didn't come up with the idea of combining Vader and Anakin; it might have been Leigh Brackett but it's not in her last draft screenplay before she passed away. She wrote the screenplay for 1946's "The Big Sleep", which is a classic noir movie if Cyn wanted to check out that sort of thing.
You are spot-on about Lucas not being good with emotion or directing emotion.

    • @tgif1345
      @tgif1345 2 роки тому

@@SamG-13 Yeah, I think you're right and that Leigh Brackett did think about it originally, but with it not being in the draft she gave to George before her death, or in any notes she made on the story, George had no way of knowing that. It just makes sense on a storytelling level.

1:50 "Is it ever explained how different species can understand each other even if one is speaking its native language?"
    Nope.
But it's not magic or technology.
It's no different than the way people in different countries here on Earth can learn to understand each other even if they have different languages.
In the case of Chewbacca, I'm pretty sure he doesn't speak the normal language (called Galactic Basic) because his mouth isn't shaped right - but he understands it just fine because he's spent decades around people who speak it so he has learned it over time, just like you might learn to understand Japanese if you lived in Japan for decades.
Han Solo has learned Chewbacca's language because they've been buddies for years and he's made the effort to learn that language; in a later movie we learn that he spent a few years on Chewbacca's home world, Kashyyyk.
For each other alien, it's kinda the same. They all learn to understand Galactic Basic but not all of them have mouths that can speak it; some do, some don't.
The ones who don't struggle to be understood, like a tourist walking around in a foreign country hoping to find somebody who can understand them.

It's time to talk about the alterations made for Episode V. There's actually not a lot of major changes. The only major ones were the Wampa's appearance, the Emperor's face, and Boba Fett's voice. Lemme explain: When they originally shot this film, they had a Wampa costume planned for a scene where the Wampas attack Echo Base, but the costume looked so stupid. They were so embarrassed that they had to hide any full glimpses of the monster during the scene where Luke escapes the Wampa's cave, giving it the Jaws effect, as it were. When they were doing the Special Edition, I suppose a new Wampa costume was made so they reshot that scene and filmed new shots of the Wampa eatings its meal, reacting to Luke's escape, and then thriving in pain after its arm gets cut off. The costume you saw here looks SO MUCH better, believe me. Now regarding the Emperor's face, originally, a woman's face was used along with a chimpanzee's, if I recall correctly. Even the actor voicing him was different. In the original, it was Clive Reville or however you spell the guy's last name. When the Prequels came out, they redid the face to make him resemble how he looked in those films. Even his actor from the next film, Ian McDiarmid, provided the voice, and added additional dialog in the scene where Vader contacts the Emperor, further tying the two trilogies together. As for Boba Fett, the armor is worn by the late and great Jeremy Bulloch, but the change was made to his voice. Originally, he was voiced by an actor named Jason Wingreen (I've never heard of him, either), but when Episode II came out, they had Temuera Morrison redub Boba's lines in this film. Won't explain why until you get to Episode II, but let's just say that this change makes sense. This film, however, wasn't the official introduction of the character. I can't believe I have to mention this, but there is a Star Wars Holiday Special that aired in 1978. It aired only once, and was hardly ever seen again. It is infamous, to say the least, but there was a cartoon that aired within the special which featured the debut appearance of Boba Fett. The cartoon itself is available on Disney+ under the Vintage Star Wars collection if you wanna check it out. Other changes made to the film were minor, updating the quality of the picture (like a more clearer look at Hoth) some of the effects (like the laser bolt from a TIE Fighter), the sound, etc. Even Cloud City looked different in the original version of the film. It originally looked so claustrophobic. With the Special Edition, they added digital windows and such so it would give the characters more breathing room. Regardless of the changes made, this movie is considered to be one of the best movie sequels ever made. Edit: And yes, as others have said, Obi-Wan is a Force Ghost. How is he able to appear as such? Well, that's a spoiler for "The Clone Wars". But basically, he is still able to guide Luke, even in death. Oh, and regarding the "I am your father" moment, at the time, very few people involved with the film knew about it. I think Mark Hamill was among those who legit had no idea. Or maybe he did know. I don't remember. Anyway, the debut appearance of Yoda, this was. Fit in with the role, Frank Oz did. However, this wasn't the first time Mark Hamill performed alongside Frank Oz. After filming this movie, I guess, Hamill, Anthony Daniels (who is the ONLY actor in the ENTIRE franchise to have reprised his role in every Star Wars project that featured the character, whether it was video games or the animated TV shows like "The Clone Wars"), R2-D2, and Peter Mayhew (who played Chewie for five films) appeared in an episode of "The Muppet Show". The plot of the episode? Chewie's been kidnapped and held prison by a bunch of "weird turkeys", and Luke, Artoo, and Threepio arrive on the Muppet Show to find and rescue their friend. You just gotta watch the episode, okay? I just can't explain it without rambling. It's one of the most memorable episodes of the show ever. 2nd edit: You thought the original Star Wars movie was originally going to be a one-off film? Nope. George Lucas had planned for there to be more films after that one. The story had only just begun at that point. Mind you, it only took them a bit longer to film this one because there was something going on. Don't exactly remember what it was. A UA-camr named Minty made a video listing 10 things that we may not have known about this film (he also did one for the previous film), so look that up, and he'll explain it. As for why Mark Hamill looks different here, it's kind of a long story, but basically, he was in a car crash during production of the previous film. He was supposed to film a scene where Luke and Threepio are in the landspeeder trying to track down Artoo's location, I think, but due to the accident, they had to hire a sort of double to film the scene, but the shot was zoomed out so Luke's face wouldn't be shown. The aftermath is a bit more clear in the infamous Holiday Special. Regardless, it's a relief that Hamill survived. 3rd edit: Tauntauns actually DO smell pretty bad. The oil on their skin is what causes the smell. Also, forgot to mention this, and I doubt anybody said it already, but when Leia says, "I love you.", and Han replies, "I know.", Harrison Ford was SUPPOSED to say "I love you, too", but he didn't wanna say it, because he felt it wasn't something Han Solo would say. What I'm trying to say is that the line was ad-libbed by Harrison Ford, and I agree. "I know" is definitely something Han would say. 4th edit: Ion Cannons are built for disabling a ship or any kind of machine. It's like an EMP grenade, in other words.

Honestly, I hope you'll think about this. Way too much is made about Luke supposedly not showing enough emotion at his caretakers' deaths. When he first sees their bodies, he's clearly initially in shock, as expected. Then anger and defiance come over him because he instantly realizes the empire did it. That makes sense. The music swells and the scene cuts away back to the death star. The scene was close to perfect in conveying the moment. Now remember, how much time transpired from when he found them dead till he returned? We're not told and don't have to be. For all we know it could have been hours. He may have taken time to bury the bodies and grieved the loss and maybe gathered some of his sentimental belongings. Further, we don't know how long it was from his home back to Obi. So he had plenty of time to cry and grieve, and, if it were real life, he probably would have. We don't need to be shown it in graphic detail. Finally, from then to Mos Eisley, once again, he had time to grieve. So, the scene as shown works. The rest of the details just are not presented visually but must be assumed. That's ok. Too much in movies today is force fed to us with little imagination left for the audience.

Here's an excerpt from a kid's novelization of a New Hope that fleshes it out a bit. I couldn't find the actual novel to copy it.
Luke choked and looked away. Then something inside him snapped, and he forced himself to look back at what the Stormtroopers had done to his aunt and uncle. I'm not afraid. The empire has taken everything away from me, but I'm not afraid. Because now I don't have anything to lose. He stood there, gazing deep into the flames and felt his anger and determination build.
      Later in the novel...
En route to the group's destination, Luke had a hard time concentrating. He couldn't stop thinking about his aunt and uncle and what the empire had done. But after the third time he had strayed off course, Ben suggested they Park the landspeeder and take a moment's pause.
So even in this kid's adaptation, his emotions are addressed

Yeah, the passage of time isn't communicated very well in these movies. Much of the emotional moments that can be inferred is just cut. I think a lot of it is from Lucas's weakness in writing those type of scenes, but also it's a lot of story to get out in 90 minutes. If these movies were made for the first time today, they would be each be 3 hour epics with better pacing and fully-fleshed out emotional characters. There's something to be said though for how concise these older movies are and how much story they tell.

Han somehow understands (and can speak a little of) the Wookie's language, but I don't think that anyone else can. Han also understands Huttese, a language spoken frequently on Luke's home planet of Tatoine. C-3PO is fluent in over 6,000,000 forms of communication. Pilots get a text readout on their console telling them what their Astromech droid in the ship (like R2-D2) is saying.

    @anthonyrobertson2011 2 роки тому

Yeah the first film no one knew if it would go over well so it was treated as a stand alone film, wasn't even called "A New Hope", just "Star Wars". The studio couldn't even get very many theaters to play it the first couple weeks. However rather quickly as word of mouth got around about this new movie, it wasn't long before theaters that were playing it, were seeing extremely long lines. So by the third week after it's release it was popping up in almost every theater. So of course it was at that point the studio thought they better get things ready to film the second part of the over-all story Lucus had written. If you watch the original trailer that had been shown the few months before its release it doesn't make it sound very good. The other problem was sci fi up until that point had kind of been in the B movie range. "2001 a space odyssey" from almost ten years before was really the last good sci fi movie made, and that film was pretty slow paced compared to "Star Wars". Sci fi was a popular genre but no one had put really good effort into making really good sci fi. However there are a few from the ten years I like. "Logan's Run" and "Silent Running" are a couple, but like I said they didn't quite reach that level that "Star Wars" delivered, which was the game changer for sci fi.

Something very important to note: Although George Lucas is great at story concepts, he isn't as good at actual story telling & editing. He had some crucial help with 4 and his emotionally stunted characters. He had more help on his weak points with 5 & 6.
GL's success put him in a more dominant position for the prequels where he had less actual help and more 'yes men' that followed his lead. While George was making his prequels he also inserted some additions to the original trilogy. Some of these additions actually damaged the story telling aspect of the original trilogy.

A lot of species understand Basic (what we hear as English), but their mouths can't make those sounds. So they speak in their own language. Han and Chewie both know Basic and Shrywook (the Wookiee language), but it's hard for them both to make each other's language sounds.

Star Wars, as it was known at launch, was in fact given a proper ending as you said. That was because George Lucas didn't believe the movie would succeed (Google the bet Lucas made with Steven Spielberg). It was changed to Episode IV after Empire Strikes Back released. With regard to Obi-Wan, some Force users have the ability to give themselves over directly to the Force upon death. Separating Vader from Anakin is a complex subject and one that most struggle with, especially the part about Vader not realizing a Skywalker would have been related to him. This was largely because the story evolved not only as they were filming it, but also thereafter as Lucas decided to make changes to the movies with each re-release. Similarly, Luke didn't know Leia was his sister because that decision hadn't been made yet when Empire was filmed. When you finish the original trilogy look on UA-cam for all changes videos to see the differences between the original and re-releases.
P.S. Lucky for us the Wampa decided to eat the Tauntaun before Luke or this would have been a short movie.
P.P.S. There is gravity in space (as evidenced by our planet continuing to orbit the Sun and our moon containing to orbit our planet), but gravity doesn't work how most people think it does.

We know, now that the first movie was made to be a standalone, just in case it flopped. I remember thinking as a child of seven how it could be over, when the Empire remained and had a fleet and such. Fortunately, the original film wasn’t a flop like the 2012 “Red Dawn” remake, and we got the full trilogy.

Han and chewie understand each other's languages but lack the proper vocal chords. Most humans don't speak Shriiwook so Han and 3PO translate. "English" is Galactic Basic, more or less the most common universal trade language. Though it's rivaled by Huttese.

Again this is explained in the novels much better. Aliens can communicate with other species because galactic basic is spoken as the trade language. Similar to English on 🌎. If basic isn't spoken an alien can use a translation droid or a translation earpiece.
