James Gambill He would’ve been looking over his shoulder the rest of his life, not to mention the risk it would pose for his family should they become wanted. In the end he had come to realize his own fate, that despite all his efforts, he was still confined by all the things he and his associates, both inside and outside the law, had done. The fact that he was involved in it all meant that he would always be liable, regardless of what he did to appease his prosecutors. So, in a world where nothing is forgiven, he decided that there was only one way he could truly attain redemption.
@@nickcara97 that's true, just hated seeing John die after I spent so many hours playing as him but him facing death head on knowing he was going to die fit his character. Sam Spence Agreed. What Rockstar don't seem to realize is that recycling some of their most loved characters would result into a massive success given how much characters like Marston or Niko Bellic made history among fans.
Sebastian Simion I personally think it's a good idea for them to have a new protagonist every game. Re-using an old character would make me feel like everything I did in the past game was pointless since, given the standard formula for sandbox games, I'd have to work my way up from the bottom again. Plus, it means a more diverse cast of characters and more voice actors whose names will become well-known.
MegamanXfan21xx I'm not saying this should be done EVERY time. After all, only some of the characters can be considered as truly charismatic. Personally, the only two I'd re-use are Marston and Niko Bellic. Of course that's just my opinion, and some other people might think that all the characters are outstanding & deserve to be re-used, however I think those two really are some of the most loved ones among all Rockstar games. So bottom line is I don't want to use them all again, just the two fan favorites. As for that feeling of having to do everything all over again, I can understand that, but still, given that the two stories really don't have to be linked to one another, you can also see the second story as something totally different rather than the continuation of the previous one. There's also no need to necessarily start at the bottom. Actually, what's the bottom? We never really get on top of ALL of our problems in life, so even though Niko has solved his problems with Dimitri & co., he won't just relax till the end of his life. There's a high chance of seeing some other antagonists spawning around, however they're not the same as the previous ones, so there's no need to feel like you're just going through the same stuff all over again.
Imagine finding out your dad voice acted in one of the best videogames ever made. I wonder if Rob will ever let them play it when they are older just to see their reaction
Hunter RIP im not. Search Red dead redemption 2's trailer and look. He is in a choke hold and had cuts where his scars were in the first game. Do you're research before commenting. EDIT: Its the newest one. May 2nd Trailer 3 On Rockstar games UA-cam
Apparently the actors worked on Red Dead 2 for five years. Chances are when they made this video, Rob either was working on Red Dead 2 or just about to find out he'd be working with Rockstar again.
I met Rob at a comic convention last year.. and he was the most kind, joyous, and PLEASANT human being I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. He deserves every ounce of success he gets in his life. He’s truly a wonderful person.
I like that he only did one character. good thing that the character turned out to be one of the best protagonists in the past 20 years of gaming. he's a great guy in real life too
If you close your eyes, it's like you are listening to John telling the story of RDR... very emotional and the best game ever made... RDR beats GTA V to it's knees and beyond and GTA V it's very good game just RDR is just soo much better
Tino Gutierrez I don't know what you are talking about, i just saw RDR ending again, John Marston quit voice acting and he has two kids and a lovely wife...period.
Tino Gutierrez Yeah, i know, and i was incredibly mad at the ending, i just don't like it, i mean i know it was good on several levels and it adds to the drama of real life and all that...but i didn't liked it.
Exactly. I hate that I never got to play RDR1 because I'm not much of a gamer, but as soon as I started playing RDR2 I fell in love with John. I wish I could've played the whole story mode of RDR2 as John but at least I get him in the epilogue. I'd psy good money to have RDR1 come back to PS4 and PS5.
That was an amazing interview, i didn't expect that. In a few years: "Random person: - What does your father do for a job? Wiethoff's children: - My father is John Marston."
I am from seymour indiana too..... that small town John Mellencamp is talking about is Seymour Indiana!!! John Mellencamp is from the same town as this guy...... and me.... I'm a nobody lol
Knowing that the REAL John Marston is living a happy life with his family makes me very relieved. Almost 10 years and I still haven't gotten over that ending man.
I think i figured out how he got the job the First American train robbery in history was in Seymour Indiana by Reno Gang pretty much plot to red dead redemption 2.
Rob Wiethoff is truly one of those rare people that deserves all the success and happiness in this world and the fact that John Marston is living on a farm with his family in some way is just so pure
He still pretty much walked away from the industry. He only came back because he liked the game and John Marston and briefly came back to reprise the role.
@@margaritaguildpublishing1700 Not really, if it came out when he was 10 he'd be 18 and he could have been even a bit older than that when it came out.
i know this is a really old video, but i’ve got a lot of respect for Rob. he put his time in to create some amazing art, but he still wants to go back home and be with his family. love that
Guy got sick of people lying to him, just wanted a job in LA. Realized those people were toxic. Wound up having HIMSELF, not a character, forever ingrained on millions of kids of what a man is, in a society with lost boys all over. That is more successful than any actor in Hollywood could hope to attain.
Hmmm...I disagree. Most gamers would recognize the name John Marston, sure, but not the voice actor who played him. Hell I watched this video and I still don't remember the guy's name. Also John Marston isn't exactly the kind of guy who represents "being a man"; he was a piece of shit. That's like saying "John Gotti was a caring, family man. A really great guy."
@@Machiave11i by "himself" he means people recognise the voice even if they weren't shown the character. And that voice is the original voice of the actor that plays him. So a piece of the voice actor is ingrained in many people worldwide, even if they weren't told it's John Marston

@@TRIIGGAVELLI Roger Clark has said Rockstar took 8 years making it so I'm guessing Rockstar started working on it right after the release of the first.
How crazy is it that this guy is doing exactly just what Marston wanted to do before he got killed... Be done with his past life and live a happy life with his family in a farm!
I like how rockstar will get small time actors, hell not even actors at all for their games. Small town people. Except for Ray liota. They don't just hire famous voice actors right away such as Troy Baker, nolin north, Tara strong etc. They give these people a great opportunity to be apart of a huge project that will lead them to other big projects.
knightghost 17 And they're always really good in the roles they're selected for, whoever does the casting for pretty much All Rockstar games deserves a raise.
***** Maybe they'll just reuse lines. For example: "I'm here to capture or kill Bill Williamson." "What are you talkin about John, we're in the same gang." "WHERE IS JAVIER ESCUELA!" "Right here John, we are in the same gang." See? Works like a charm
Great video. I think we (as a society) spend so much time focusing on the people who Hollywood breaks, the ones who fall victim to drugs, alcohol, sex (not to say any of those things are expressly bad, but everything in moderation, right?) the ones that have mental breakdowns and lead cops on 8 hour police chases which end in some pervert paparazzo getting a candid upskirt shot as the cops slap on the cuffs, the ones who are chewed up, spit out, and left for dead in an LA alley. This man, he went to Hollywood, worked his ass off, made a stunningly iconic performance in what will always be one of greatest video games of all time, met the love of his life, and found his way back home to happily raise a family with her. Rob never let Hollywood define him, and in turn, ended up defining a little slice of Hollywood, or more specifically, video games. He is the kind of person we should idolize and strive to be like, and he is a reminder to us all that happiness is achievable if you just know where to look.
Rob if you ever see this. Please know that your performance and Red Dead Redemption changed me to be a better human being. The first time I got moved by a game to the point of tears was at the ending of RDR. I always and forever will be grateful to you and rockstar for this masterpiece.
I am actually one of rob's cousins and i will definetly make sure he reads this!!!! He really appreciates every single one of you guys! and if you're wondering, I am his sister's nephew!
Man, I don't get emotional easily, but this interview caused me to tear up. How the game was basically reminiscent of his own life is just amazing, simply amazing. John wanted to create a better life for himself and his family by getting out of the gang. Just like Rob, going to L.A. to better himself, he was able to start a family. Beautiful.
Just imagine when the kids grow up and they're asked "So what did your parents do for a living?" and they reply "Well, my dad is the guy behind John Marston"...
Rob IS John Marston. A badass on the surface, but a hard working family man at heart. I too grew up in a small town and arguably over-romanticized life somewhere else. I lived abroad for 10 years and it was a life changing experience that I wouldn't change for anything, but years later I'm back in my hometown, near my remaining family and even starting a family of my own. I find such a great happiness in providing for them. I get the privilege each and every day to come home to people I care about, and it's a joy like no other. You're an inspiration in more ways than you know, Rob. This is a fantastic documentary.
Man. Mad respect to Rob for stepping back. And really? If you're going to lend yourself to ONLY one game, Red Dead Redemption is the one to do. In my humble opinion, it's THE best game for Xbox.
NorthWriter Till this day, I still proudly proclaim that Red Dead Redemption is my favorite Xbox game! And the general response to that is: "I've never played it".
NorthWriter Probably because Xbox has no other real exclusives or games to compete with it, because it certainly isn’t the best game for Playstation. Even though it’s certainly in the top 5.
He retired to live in a farm with his family, but rockstar tracked him down and pushed him back in the business for one more game. Very ironic

they auctually did not, because rd1 was such a big succuess, his asking price was much higher. thats why you see a little bit of john marston in rd2
Hopefully they didn't do him like they did the voice actor for Niko.
I really hope Rockstar makes a RDR prequel. John Marston is, in my opinion, the best video game protagonist ever.
Same. But I'm pretty sure the guy made it pretty clear he's truly happy where he's at. Doesn't look like a big chance he will be returning!
Sam Spence Agreed. What Rockstar don't seem to realize is that recycling some of their most loved characters would result into a massive success given how much characters like Marston or Niko Bellic made history among fans.
Same, by 1,000,000 Miles

Rockstar games wouldn't make it directly related to Redemption if they couldn't get Marston's real voice back. He'll be in it, I know it

"WHERE IS JAVIER ESCUELA!"
"Right here John, we are in the same gang."

That'd be weird for them, hearing his voice on someone else
