  • The Isle of Man TT is run in a time-trial format on public roads closed to the public by an Act of Tynwald (the parliament of the Isle of Man). The event consists of one week of practice sessions followed by one week of racing. It has been a tradition, perhaps started by racing competitors in the early 1920s, for spectators to tour the Snaefell Mountain Course on motorcycles during the Isle of Man TT on "Mad Sunday", an informal and unofficial sanctioned event held on the Sunday between 'Practice Week' and 'Race Week'.
The first Isle of Man TT race was held on Tuesday 28 May 1907 and was called the International Auto-Cycle Tourist Trophy. The event was organised by the Auto-Cycle Club over 10 laps of the Isle of Man St John's Short Course of 15 miles 1,470 yards for road-legal 'touring' motorcycles with exhaust silencers, saddles, pedals and mudguards.
From 1911 the Isle of Man TT transferred to the much longer Snaefell Mountain Course of 37.40 miles (60.19 km) (current length 37.73 miles (60.72 km)). Its elevation goes from sea-level to 1,300 feet. The race programme developed from a single race with two classes for the 1907 Isle of Man TT, expanding in 1911 to two individual races for the 350cc Junior TT motor-cycles and the Blue Riband event the 500cc Senior TT race. The race did not take place from 1915 to 1919 due to the First World War. It resumed in 1920. A 250cc Lightweight TT race was added to the Isle of Man TT programme in 1922, followed by a Sidecar TT race in 1923.
There was no racing on the Isle of Man between 1940 and 1945 due to the Second World War. It recommenced with the Manx Grand Prix in 1946 and the Isle of Man TT in 1947, with a greatly expanded format that included the new Clubman's TT races. The Isle of Man TT became part of the FIM Motor-cycle Grand Prix World Championship (now MotoGP) as the British round of the World Motor-Cycling Championship during the period 1949-1976. Following safety concerns with the Snaefell Mountain Course and problems over inadequate "start-money" for competitors, there was a boycott of the Isle of Man TT races from the early 1970s by many of the leading competitors, motorcycle manufacturers and national motorcycle sporting federations.
It is still regarded in popular culture as the most dangerous motorsport event in the world, with the New York Times stating that the number of deaths has risen "to 146 since it was first run in 1907; if one includes fatal accidents occurring during the Manx Grand Prix, the amateur races held later in the summer on the same Snaefell Mountain Course, the figure rises above 250". An on-site account of the 2003 race by Sports Illustrated writer Franz Lidz called the spectacle "38 Miles of Terror... a test of nerves and speed that may be sport's most dangerous event."
In 1976, the Isle of Man TT lost its world championship status; this was transferred to the United Kingdom by the FIM and run as the British Grand Prix for the 1977 season. The Isle of Man TT Races then became an integral part of the new style TT Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 World Championships between 1977 and 1990 to develop and maintain the international racing status of the Isle of Man TT races.
The event was redeveloped by the Isle of Man Department of Tourism as the Isle of Man TT Festival from 1989 onwards. This included new racing events for the new Isle of Man TT Festival programme, including the Pre-TT Classic Races in 1989 followed by the Post-TT Races from 1991, both held on the Billown Circuit. In 2013, the Isle of Man Classic TT was developed by the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development and the Auto-Cycle Union for historic racing motorcycles, and along with the Manx Grand Prix now forms part of the 'Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling' held in late August of each year.

My uncle took part in the race a few times during the 90's. He once had to push his bike for a mile to get it over the finish line as he ran out of fuel after sliding off the bike earlier on in the course, breaking a rib and a toe in the process. He got a standing ovation from the crowd at the grandstand for that, the race is absolutely crazy and the island hasn't been the same without it these past few years.

People want the road racing events banned but fail to realise something as simple as, if bikes were invented today (last 30 years even) they'd never be legislated for road use. It's in our DNA... There are multiple classes of bikes which include electric (1 lap), sidecars (3 laps), 600cc slightly modified from street bikes (4 laps) to the 1200cc monsters - superbikes (6 laps). Average speed over a lap is held by Hickman at around 135mph......... tops out at over 200 on the mountain section.
Sidecars are 600cc and are on average full throttle in top gear for about 60% of the lap which is 37&1/2 miles long. Over 200 competitors have died doing the races, and spectators have died as well, so it's not for the squeamish......... you need the following to compete, motorbike licence, race licence, appropriate bike, leathers, helmet, a fear of nothing and balls the size of basketballs!!!! Oh, and females are treated equally as competitors.

You also need to have qualified up to a full international race licence and have endorsements from the clerk of the course at a number of less challenging road races, and are still a newcomer even if you hold a world championship if you've never raced on the mountain circuit, which means going through a training course run by ex-racers (or even potentially some current ones, although they will mostly be busy with their own preparations) and wearing an orange bib for your first season there.
Race licenses go from clubman, through national, to international, and that is before you start working on getting your signatures from other road races.
I was a regular marshal there for a number of years, and marshals (certainly then, and I believe still now) have to be sworn in as the equivalent as special constables to have authority on and around the circuit for removal of spectators from dangerous viewpoints and the like. I once had to arrest a spectator for using flash (at Ballaugh Bridge) right in the face of oncoming riders, even after being warned not to. He was bailed and his photographic equipment was held until after the Senior race. Anyone signed up is deemed to be on duty at any race or event associated with the TT festival.

I used to go the Isle of Man on holidays but occasionally at the same time as the Manx GP which was a lesser series of races to the TT but still using the mountain circuit I think it was called. The lap was just over a 37 mile loop in the northern part of the island. I saw it mainly in the town of Ramsey and it was interesting hearing about bikes that crashed or ended up driving up someone's path and into their home. Very crazy but good knowing they survived the accidents.

4:00 Generally "the wobbles" as they are known as will self correct, but you have to be dead-ass relaxed with your arms to let them work themselves out. It's an oscillation that starts because of tiny inputs from the road and rider, and if you keep the throttle pinned and have a good, relaxed tuck, the gyroscopic force of the rear wheel spinning will work out the wobbles. A motorcycle, because of the amount of mass and the rotational force of the rear wheel, wants to stay straight up vertical. On a mountain bike, if your rear wheel slips out, it's often because a) intentional slip to make a turn much tighter or b) loose surface. The thing is, a race bike weighs around 300 to 400 lbs. A good mountain bike? Maybe 30 lbs, maybe less. It doesn't have the weight to correct itself with gyroscopic force, and that's why a MTB is usually unrecoverable, but a race bike will settle in after a few wobbles.

It is one of the most amazing spectacles you will ever see live, especially if you are a biker, I've only managed to get to island for the racing about 5 times, hopefully will go again in the next couple of years. The stats are mind blowing. Track is almost 38 miles long, of public roads. Over 60 designated corners, more if you count the ones with no name, Some of the corners are 1st gear 40mph, and yet the current outright lap record is 135.452 mph (average speed). Sulby straight speeds exceed 200mph. The sidecars for me are the most amazing, they use 600cc engines, They have wide slick rear tires, and pretty wide front and sidecar tires, so have much more traction than the solos. If they used the F1 sidecars which use 1000cc engines, thy would be too fast. The rider and passenger both must have absolute trust in the other, as without either one the outfit would not go round the course. And when the racing is over we get to ride round the circuit on our bikes, although we do have to observe the speed limits, although the mountain is made 1 way for the duration of the event and has no speed limit, (I believe that is still the case). Finally no one can be said that they do it for the money, I think the winner of the senior TT (which is the blue ribbon event) receives about £18,000 prize money.

I have been to the TT many times, maybe 25, since 1984.
I love the TT & the Island, such a magical place.
I have two friends who have done the Manx GP which is similar to the TT but held in August.
There are other road races on the Island as well as the TT & the ManxGP. such as the Southern 100 &, a few years ago at least, the Jurby Road races, which was even more bonkers that the TT !

One lap of the course is 37.73 miles long with approximately 240 curves and turns per lap and a 1400 foot elevation change. There is a week of practice followed by a week of racing. Bikes race for 6 laps, sidecars race for 4 laps, electric bikes race for 1 lap (due to limited battery life).Top speed ever recorded was 206mph. The top riders are averaging around 128mph per lap. On average two people lose their life every year. It is the Mount Everest of motorcycle road racing. The men and women who do this are gladiators.

The Isle of Mann TT (Tourist Trophy) is really something quite special, unique , as it's held on public roads + the speeds they maintain are insane. The course is basically a lap of the island, + goes through residential/commercial areas as well as a large part thats rural/countryside, + quite hilly. The top boys average around 180mph + sadly, + inevitably, crashes are often fatal.
I get a strange mix of emotions watching these warriors , it's an anxious type feeling, they're going sooo fast!
The onboard cameras do a great job, in the built-up areas the riders only see a blur, your vision at those speeds is affected, unsurprisingly + what riders experience is something really quite special, they do what few people can + deserve enormous respect.
Awesome is a word often used, in relation to the TT it's fitting + for once it's wholly appropriate.
One sight I always enjoy, watching the look on someone's face, who's roadside for the first time + a bike flies past............ It's a look of absolute shock, they're stunned, you really can't escape the sense you get, of just how fast they're travelling. Frighteningly fast, they pass you in a flash, an hour before on the same road, Mum drove to Tesco's.
It's back on again, end of the month, first time for a couple of years, I guess?
If you've not followed it before,. you should, it's well covered + it'll blow your mind!!!!
Anyway, I hope I made some sense + you know a bit more about it, I'm no expert but what I've said is correct (I hope) + I just wanted to describe a sport event that should be celebrated, respected, + enjoyed by many.............

There has been 240 deaths including fans since the start of the competition over its 103 yrs history. I used to live in the Isle of Man myself. And a lot of the riders are specialist in the road racing. However, they do track events as well.

Was there in 2019. The island is a beautiful place. Lots of non-competing motorbike riders take the ferry across from Liverpool. I got some camping at Douglas Rugby Club, as accommodation is rare and expensive during that time.
You can ride the track (which is just normal road), with the mountain section being unlimited speed.
It is the place to go if you like speedy motorcycles going past you about 3 metres away.
Death toll averages about 2 per year. If I recall correctly, In 2019 two died plus some non-competing motorbike riders who push it too hard.
Ask away if you have any questions that I can answer.

3:10 - In the late 00s. The first few years they averaged 90mph for a lap, now they're up to a 120mph average (top speeds up to 200mph). The only differences are no gear changes (because electrics are only about how much throttle you use) and that batteries only last one lap, unlike gas powered bikes that run two. But it's still racing and still fast. Watch the John McGuinness videos.

I've not been to the Isle of Man, nor seen the TT, but I'll add to what other commenters have said about the island. It's more or less independent, and that's why it can have its own speed limits. It's not part of the United Kingdom, and, when we were in the European Union, it wasn't. The connection is that Elizabeth II is also Lord of Mann; it has its own, very ancient Parliament, Tynwald. The UK looks after its foreign affairs and defence, I believe.
It has its own Celtic language, Manx. Officially, the last speaker of this as a mother tongue died in 1974 - we have tape recordings of the last few speakers - but it has now been revived. Acts of Tynwald are always promulgated in Manx and English. The name of the island is Ellan Vannin in Manx.
The native breed of cat have no tails.
You should look up the flag, a triskelion - the 'Three Legs of Man'. This refers to the way the Isle of Man looks to England, Scotland, and Ireland.

At full speed if their bike is fast enough or they are brave enough. Just like the race it's self. People have died riding this course. How ever as it is a public road you can still ride it. Just not as fast in the built up areas. Outside the built up areas. You can still legally ride a motorcycle at 200+mph. I wouldn't as my self preservation would would probably stop me at about 130mph. As I don't have a motorcycle licence. I have no worries.

Its one of the most dangerous races its not like the normal races which are on race tracks which have some safety whereas the TT races are on main roads and have had some fatal crashes never been there but I have been to quite a few motorbike racing and you have to be there to get the real feel of it also seen some of the sidecar ones they were good too ahh I miss them.

There is a video called 'history of the Isle of Man TT' that's worth a look, those early years are amazing to see, the bikes and protective equipment 🤷🤪
