I'm still not over her saying, "you're gonna watch me disappear into the sun" in liability, then coming back with an album called solar power.
YES
And now shes talking about disappear in the cover in/of the rain
OH MY- 🤯
😳
She plans everything 👀🌞
this album felt underwhelming on first listen, but it grew so much on me. i hate how we were expecting melodrama 2.0 when we all know artists usually evolve their music from album to album. ANYWAYS, my favs are oceanic feeling and the path
Cannot agree more. 5 days after the release, all the songs are favorites.
Am I the only one who has grown lesser to like it over time? It's gotten worse for me personally. But, hey! I'm glad people enjoy it
Justin, I totally agree with you
I hate the way I said: "wow ... this is not what I was expecting ..."
But then I listened to it again, and again, and again and oh man I was already in love in an unexpected way. It's such a beautiful album and all the songs are my favorites, deluxe tracks included.
ME 2
@@freddysamjacob363 Same, some songs have become more boring to me and sometimes I find myself trying to convince myself of liking the album. I have to say, I wasn't expecting a Melodrama 2.0. PH and Melodrama are very far away from each other to expect an album from Lorde that sounds like her previous records, so I tried to go open minded into it.
We love the yellow top matching the album’s aesthetic
and the scrunchie! love the color coordination
she always coordinates her looks for whatever album she's listening to, it makes the experience so much better imo🥺🥺
YES LET ME CRY FRICK!
@@hipsta26please just noticed omg -.- i loveee it
no cuz Lorde ACTUALLY meant "go touch some grass" basically in this album 😭😭
@Halsey Porter ✨ what 😃
@Halsey Porter ✨ oh okiee i was confused cuz u said that with no explanation 😭😭
when she picked up the speaker during Fallen Fruit, i felt that
ITS CAITLIN! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh I WATCH U!!!
But Yes this album is amazing, my favorite is mood ring
Hahaha I also felt why you saying this, I mean you added up something a lil bit more dramatic scene on that one. Like that piano falling off of the rooftop. It's actually the best one yet 😂👍
Hi Caitlin nice to see you here 😁😁
The line "you can't wait to turn 15 then you blink and it's been 10 years" FUCKED ME UP as someone who'll turn 25 before the end of the year 😵💫
Me who would be 15 obout a month🤐
But also yeah cause things feels like a day ago but then I found out it's almost 9 years ago
omg 96 babies
Oh my god I turn 25 on December 22nd and I’m panicking.
I was so excited to be 25 because it's my favorite number and a few weeks later the lockdowns for COVID began. 🥴
i felt that in my soul even though I'm just turning 21, but i remember vividly being so hyped to turn 16 and then all of a sudden I'm an "adult" 😭
Saying Lorde is untalented is like saying the ocean doesn’t have water.
She is talented. But, this record is just not it for me. It was disappointing
@@freddysamjacob363 minute 0:35
@@freddysamjacob363 agree. The sound is ALMOST 90s rock but trying to make it like....indie? If that makes sense. Anyway it sounds like a bunch of almost good songs, enjoyed a few though
The album was very bad. She’s not talented. Cardi B is better
@@andrewnw5930 gurl go to bed
It's been four years and I still can't believe Lorde is finally back. It's is so amazing to see her go from realism (pure heroine) to romantism (melodrama) to spiritual growth and connection (solar power)
Also do give a listen to the songs from the deluxe version of this album. It's just amazing 😍
still, it was quite an underwhelming listen imo. and this is coming from someone who has tickets to the tour :(
@@user-rv7ge1tc4l imo, it's the album you sway to alone in your room, it's not exactly a bop-your-ass-concert album
@@sarcasticeggs8998 exactly. lol idk how she is going to perform it. I also know for a fact that everyone will be waiting for her to perform songs from melo and PH
Much of solar power is a critique on western influencer and un-holistic wellness and spiritual culture however. Mood Ring is one such example.
From romanticism to transcendentalism you might say😏
Big Star really hits different when you know that is about her dog, Pearl, who passed away :((
Love the grunge vibe of that song too

That makes so much sense now

I don't understand the effect this album has on me.
"Stoned at the nail salon" hits so hard. How can she conjure the mix of summer and nostalgic vibe I can feel but can never explain?
Life is worth living just for the pleasure of listening to this art.
Stoned at the nail salon in my opinion is the best song out of the album!!!
stoned at the nail salon makes me want to cry for some reason. its that same feeling when i listen to mystery of love
@@damlabayrak9826 girl sameee!!!
Stoned at the nail salon is 100% my favorite on the album
THATS THE DESCRIPTION I WAS LOOKING FOR! It’s literally a mix of summer and nostalgia, that’s why I cry every time I listen to that song, it reminds me of the best summer of my life.
Fallen Fruit is honestly a masterpiece. Asking to our parents WHAT THE FUCK have you done to the planet, and us coming together realizing dude, we should try to change this. Sound-wise, it feels like a tribute to the Beatles at their most psychedelic.
Like it’s their fault. Don’t be so idealistic honestly, you know the album is a trainwreck.
@@syntheticreality549 lmao you don't like it and that's okay, I loved it.
this album is a grower after a few listens it just clicks
i really didnt like it but gonna listen to it again bc of what you said
It’s a grower not a big penis upon first inspection?
I tried so hard but I get bored 30 seconds in and it’s not that lorde can’t do slow songs . She did writer in the dark and liability and I loved those songs . For some reason it just doesn’t work for me on this album
To whoever said "It's not Lorde's fault that she got happy and you didn't," you're a GENIUS. Because yes! It's not her fault! If you wanted another Melodrama......literally go listen to Melodrama. This is 4 years later and she's obviously not in the same place she was. If you are, well...sorry. Lorde is not your therapist lmao. And if she is, you better cut her that check!
Thanks for writing out 2 paragraphs to state the obvious. You mean that when someone says it’s not lorde’s responsibility you didn’t get happy. What they are saying is it’s not lorde’s responsibility you didn’t get happy? Thanks for clearing that up…
@@mattr3250 Oh my god thank YOU! so much, for elaborating so much on the comment.
I appreciate it
When someone says 2+2=4. But because they think there gods gift to intelligence they write it out in 6 sentences. What is there to elaborate on? Only thing left to do is take the steam out of your head.
i love how her album always reflect on my life journey too... when she released Melodrama, I was 17. I remember going to prom and just went wild and cried coming home later. Now, im at college, at a much better place and she released Solar Power. I think its cause shes only a year or two older than me, so that's why it coincides. the Maori version is just as good especially SATNS and Oceanic Feelings.
This is the dumbest comment I’ve seen lmao. If you’re selling your album to others, be prepared for criticisms. No one wanted a Melodrama 2, Pure Heroine and Melodrama are so different yet are both very much loved by most.
Mood ring was actually inspired by Natalie Imbruglia. Your mind, the big brain energy cascaded.
honestly
I find it interesting she starts off saying “I’m not your savior” in The Path, then follows that with “I’m kinda like a prettier Jesus” in Solar Power
Sarcasm my friend.
and the fact that she spent a year in Antarctica and then releases an album called solar power and says "i hate the winter, can't stand the cold" lol
@@bowtieism3 that or what she said on her emails about a different person singing each one of the songs
@@bowtieism3 But Lorde critisized celebrity culture since Pure Heroin while having there lyrics about how she "was raised to be admired and to be noticed". It didn't really change. It's kinda "I'm not like other girls" vibe for me. Here it's similar- on one hand she criticized celebrities, California etc and on the other hand she promotes herself to be the LORDE. And I understand that the promotion is needed and that her fans already created this vibe around her, but you can't listen to her and not see that she thinks that she's special. And she kind of is.This kind of self-confidence is needed to stand on a stage and create something, but the message about other celebrities wanting to be famous and how she's not like them seems childish to me.
@@hatifnat13 Thank you
The amount of comfort this woman gives is unimaginable, I’m just realllllly thankful you exist
I'm glad that Lorde is stepping out into a new sound that is Solar Power. The reason her other albums like Melodrama are so powerful are because there is only Melodrama. If she just remade Melodrama over and over again, it would detract from the special-ness of the original.
I suppose you’re right 😭😭😭
When she's saying SCORPIO GENERATION I'm DIE. Mood Ring it's beautiful.

This album took me to a beach in New Zealand & feels beautiful, calming and artistic and I’m not mad about it. My favorites are Secrets, Dominoes & Mood Ring. Some people don’t like it which is fine, i just get annoyed when it’s compared to her previous work. I wish people would let it stand on its own.
Exactly. People aren’t getting anywhere comparing it to melodrama. Lorde changes it up every album based on where she’s at in life so idk why people were expecting another melodrama. This album is an absolute masterpiece
okay dominoes is also my fave (top4: dominoes, mood ring, stoned at the nail salon, secrets), but i've seen so many comments hating on it :(
@@ctaylor4234 i have too, we just have to accept that some people don’t have taste 😪😂😂
it rlly is like a beach tho you describe that sooooo perfectly.
it took me about 2-3 full listens to really appreciate this album but now i love it. it feels like the daylight after the chaotic night that was melodrama. shes also touching on things like climate change, fomo, anxiety for the future etc which are things i so relate to. i absolutely love it
SECRETS FROM A GIIIIRL WHO SEEN

THANK U finally someone appreciating the masterpiece that is that song

this album is SUCH a masterpiece. i honestly think people will stop sleeping on it and it will hit way more in the future.
AGREED
You should do a series where you go back to albums you’ve reviewed and discuss how they’ve aged/grown on you!
i love how you dress up according to the album you're reviewing
"cause all the music you listened to in 16, you'll grow out of" Not me who listens to Pure Heroine everyday.
"pluto in scorpio generation" is actually referring to the generation right above lorde (& you). mood ring is basically making fun of white "spiritual" millennials lmao it's so good
Some critics didn't get it and thought Lorde was deadass serious about Mood Ring byeee 😭🌞
I can hear it as that but I also hear it as someone so desperate to find happiness and inner peace they'll try anything from mood rings to crystals to vitamins
Yes it was basically a sort of criticism of this movement. It expresses disillusion. But this is the closest sonicslly she had with the songs in Melodrama (as we know that Melodrama is mostly about disillusionment with love and relationships).
All of Lorde’s albums are a grower for me. My fave is still Pure Heroine. Right now I gravitate towards listening to Solar Power though, coz after a stressful day from work I just want to listen to something relaxing.
this album wasnt even like a gradual grower for me, i just hated it the first listen and loved it the second 🤷
SAME. First listen I was gonna unstan, second listen I wanted to build a shrine for her
SAME
Hahaha honestly same lol
SAME i don’t know why but it sounds so different on the second listen
thats hilarious
I get it. Put it on repeat and you’ll start loving it. For me it really wasn’t love at first listen.
Solar Power is indeed a banger, honestly. Much more of a slow-burn compared to her older albums, which shows Lorde’s versatility as a musical artist. Although slow-burn music isn’t really my thing, but it doesn’t mean it’s bad. We all got our own musical tastes anyway.
You NEED to listen to all of Marina Diamandis aka Marina and the Diamonds aka MARINA's albums, I'm sure you are going to absolutely LOVE them, specially her last one! Love you and your videos.
THIS IS WHAT I WAS SAYING!
yess
She already did and didn't really vibe/did a really quick video flying through Marinas discography. She ended up deleting though bc it got a lot of hate from fans.
"remember what you thought was grief before you got the call" hit the hardest for me.
You really don't understand grief until a person that is close to you is taken away too soon
Please tell me I'm not the only person on earth who absolutely loved this album first listen lmao
You're not. Loved it right away, it was exactly what I needed.
I did as well… probably because I was happy during my first listen. Hehe
Idk it's just such a comfort album
Nope. Loved this album straight away. Album of the year for me and beats melodrama imo
You most certainly are and were not!!!! Lot's of us did - which is awesome for us. (edited because I sounded really harsh initially, unintentionally)
I had the same thoughts about the songs sonically on my first listen. I feel like the more you listen to the whole album the better it gets. Even though it’s different, I really love it and have no skips. Great video!
After seeing the power of Finneas on Hit me hard and soft as a producer I started to dream of the big things he and Lorde could do. I feel like some of these songs asked for greater growth that wasn't given, I don't know if it was due to the decision of whoever produced it or Lorde herself, but I know that Finneas could do it.

She also dropped Te Reo (NZ native language) versions of a few songs from this album. KIWI ICON 🥝
for me, this album absolutely my favorite album from lorde :) the melodyyyy ughhhhhhh always give me relaxing-instropecting summer vibes even its winter outside
i love how we all collectively and respectfully disagree when we hear the line: "all the music you loved at 16 you'll grow out of"🤭
The triplet of California, Stoned at the Nail Salon, and Fallen Fruit is such an eargasm. So great sonically and lyrically. The album as a whole definitely grew on me the same way I wasn't sure about Green Light but then the album brought it all together and now it's so goddamn everything
For me - coz I'm really really old - it's The Path, Fallen Fruit and Secrets From a Girl
For me it's The Path, Big Star and Mood Ring 👑🌻💙🌞
The whole album couldve been mood ring on repeat for 1 whole hour and i would still eat it up
Yessss I can't believe Anthony Fantano said it was Lorde's worst song 💀
Fallen Fruit is about how everyone mistreats nature.
I've listened to the album a few times and I'm still waiting for it to grow on me. 😭 (I really hope it does!) I agree with what you said about the songs starting to sound the same, I think that is my main issue. Most of the songs kinda form into one as I'm listening. "Solar Power" the song is still not my favorite and it was ruined further for me by the memes pointing out that it sounds like a song from a 90's razor/shaving cream commercial lol.
The more l listen, the duller it become lmao help
Samee I listened to it and after "stoned at the nailsalon" everything just kinda blurrs together. Truly couldn't tell you what the other songs sound like or what even their names are
Naw check your ears and mood
My favorites are Big Star, Secrets from a Girl, and many more. Okay. All of em. I was disappointed with most songs at first. But lorde did they grow on me. And in contrary, the reason people don't appreciate a shift in an artists approach is because in metaphoric terms "a novelist doesn't write two books of the same story". Solar Power birthed something in me I've lost on the journey of my growing pains. She's my age so I felt like we grew up together.
I wanna let u know I laughed at your lorde pun :)

Girl please give a try to the album “Young Heart” by Birdy. Is the sad/healing album we all needed.
Masterpiece album, every single track is beautiful! It is a perfect album for autumn as well, sad it's so underrated. Ash needs to give it the spotlight it needs.
yessss, finally someone who appreciates Birdy
thank you for the recommendation, it's sooo beautiful
Lorde came back from a year of hiatus and was like, "You're depressed? Here you go bitch. Feast on it. "
I love this album, I think it really shows how maturity changes your life path and your desires. It's beautiful
I do really liked the whole album cuz I didn’t compared it to her previous ones, she said she wanted to give this beachy-chill-free vibe and I loved it bc it puts me on a good relax mood, just feelin every song thinking I’m in a sunset at the beach wearing some crochet outfit ✨
ash saying "i am a person" and then proceeding to have a mental breakdown is the most relatable thing i ever saw on this channel yep
I feel like I'm literally the only person who really liked this album. It's not her best but I can't stop listening !
Finding out that mood ring was a whole satirical parody of the whole holistic movement + witchtok stuff really changes the whole perspective of the album bc you realize she doesnt take herself seriously. she is secure in who she is and that shines through bc this album is a literary masterpiece!
As someone from New Zealand it's really interesting because this album's sound is really reminiscent of a lot of home grown music that New Zealand artists/bands produce
This album is so different I love lorde but this album has grown a lot since I first listened to it mood ring owns my ass

Ppl were expecting old Lorde on this album but tbh a fully acousic, bong hit on a picnic blanket Lorde is just everryyyythingggg
Fun fact: SFAGWSIA is a successor to Ribs, according to Lorde.
The Man With The Axe is one of my favorites! It was so heartwarming lyrically and the melodic progressions within it were like a beautiful mess. It’s kind of discombobulated on purpose to portray the conflicting feelings the persona is experiencing towards themselves vs. towards someone they love. Standout lyrics for me would be the second to the last stanza,
“I guess I'll always be this way
Swallowed up by the words and halfway to space
But there by the fire, you offered your hand
And as I took it, I loved you, the boy with the plan”
I hope you give it another chance!
I’m so sad the camera died on big star. miss ella knew what she was doing with the liability reference and I am still not okay from it. and the fact it’s about pearl…I’m fine I swear
I’m surprised how many people do not seem to like this album. It’s definitely standing out from the rest she has released but I love how this shows a different and somehow more mature side of lorde. It’s a really good album.

This album is such a breath of fresh air from the all the music that has been released recently. She's doing something different from the rest right now and I'm so here for it. I immediately fell in love with solar power with the 1st listen and it got me so pumped for the album, and let me tell you I was not disappointed at all for the album. I could listen to this whole album and just get lost in it's harmonies and vocals.
Faves are definetly the path, ocenaic feeling, stoned at the nail salon, the man with the axe, California and mood ring
The lyrics are important!!
And it grows so much and I think is best outside
2 things I love about this video: 1. You using tweets from that "did lorde release an album today" account who carry the fandom on their back 2. you wearing yellow to match with the aesthetic 🥰
Ash give a try to Therapy by Anne-Marie. it's literally therapy for me haha. definitely in my top 3 albums released this year
YES, she is amazing
Yessssss!
Wait 'till she finds out that on half of the songs Clairo and Phoebe were giving the harmonies
Loved the video, Ash
i dont know why everyone’s hating on “the man with the axe” 😭😭 its one of my favs off the album
*I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE…TURN IT UP!!!!* also i’d like to say: mood ring, secrets from a girl, the path supremacy (in that order)
okay outfit matching the album !!
I love that lorde takes her times with albums bc i'm a different person each time she releases a new one, so when i listened to melodrama i was a very different girl than now, and as much as i LOVE melodrama, i didn't want melodrama 2.0 bc i don't relate to that album anymore (at least not in the same way) and solar power was exactly what i needed, i relate so much to what she's written and the journey she went thru too. When i first listened to The path i smiled so hard too lol the entire album felt like a warm hug
I wished she put Helen of Troy and Hold No Grudge on regular version they're such a bops
OMG, your editing is killing meeeeee! Lol. Also, awesome review
your camera died just when it got to my favorite song 😭 i absolutely love this album, i guess the fact that i’m mentally unstable right now makes the album feel like a hug to me. i feel like she went through melodrama and now she’s in this moment of her life and i just gotta get through my melodrama now. im actually really glad that she didn’t make another sad depressing album
this album is SO different
I also think the album not being so well received has something to do with the time Lorde released it. At least for me, personally, it's almost September and I'm already in my fall cold vibe 😭😭 if she had released it in the beginning of summer I think I would appreciated it more.
Yeah profit wise it'd be more sensible to realse it for the USA markets summer
I love this album so much, I also love Pure Heroin and Melodrama but I can really appreciate the overall vibe of this album and I still listen to every song religiously (except for the man with the axe). It always makes me so sad when people say they felt disappointed or didn't like this album because it's honestly such a work of art
I feel like with recent albums Jack antonoff has produced there’s so much samey samey production on them. From Lana to clairo to Taylor to Lorde. Some work better than others but I feel like making an entire album with him is a blessing and a curse.
remember jack actually did produce melodrama as well, the artists decide completely what they want, jack does it for them
Uhm, I mean...
folklore and evermore stand totally on their own.
Lana's album is like a tenue folk.
Clairo's album is more jazzy
And Lorde's has the lightness of 70's.
People just started saying this since the realising of stoned at the nail salon, but Lorde herseld said that she was the main creator of the album, so it's not Jack's fault.
Most of folklore & evermore were produced by Aaron Dessner actually.
I know. I mean on those individual albums themselves there’s a lot of cohesion to a fault. I’m not saying those albums as a whole sound identical. And I know Jack produced melodrama as well I’m not saying he’s terrible. Just based on what he’s produced in the last couple years plus his most recent bleachers album this is how I feel.
@@GoMulanGo I wouldn't describe any of his work with Taylor or the bleachers albums as sounding like what Lorde is doing here. Folklore maybe but its more like a adult, folksy evolution of her country stuff. Especially songs like Betty, LGAD, Dorothea, and Cowboy Like Me. The Bleachers is so Springsteen that Springsteen features on it. I don't listen to the other singers you mentioned so no opinion, but I just don't agree that this stuff sounds homogeneous. Especially since this only production on evermore is the most synth pop song on both records.
I really love this album. it's so different to everything else out rn
At first listen I did not love the album at all since I do not listen to anything of that style/sound. 3-4 listens later I fell totally in love with it, hope it'll grow on you as well, Ash. It is such a great project from Lorde, damn.
PLEASE LISTEN TO PUNISHER BY PHOEBE BRIDGERS! I AM BEGGING! 😭😭
Also she was actually in the backing vocals of Solar Power along with Clairo!
THE LOOK that is so similar to Lordes in this era: nailed it Ash!!
I love that Clairo did backing vocals on this album too. All the harmonies are amazing
Phoebe Bridgers as well :)
solar power is lorde’s sweetener era. change my mind.
but solar power has more bops
Sis, no. At least Lorde is delivering us good songwriting and beautiful production, maybe not everyones taste but doesn't mean it's not good. Ariana with Sweetener though, no m'am we are gonna pretend we didn't hear that.
This album grew on me. My faves are Stoned at the Nail Salon and Big Star
It took a while, but after re-listening a lot I actually really love this album
bestie you need to hear this album more times, it actually GREW SO MUCH on me! at every listen it just gets better!! the path is amazing and stoned at a nail salon too
stoned at the nail salon BROKE me. I literally listened to it on repeat for hours in the middle of the night sobbing. It's like every lyric was a DIRECT callout. Anyway yah I have not been emotionally well since then teehee :)
ok queen halsey’s album is next😌💅🏻
You can't compare her albums now that they're all so different. I loooove this album so much. Mood Ring is definitely a favorite. It may be a much different style but that what she does. It suits her voice really well and honestly I prefer the indie sound people have been doing
omg you should watch lorde's genius interview where she explaned the mood ring's lyrics! it made me like the song so much more!
I won't lie, Ash, i missed you 😭😭❤️😔
you should know THIS is what I've been waiting for since 2017. ash reacting to the third album from Lorde. it's finally here.
