Is snapping in Blender 4.0 REALLY any better?

  • Here's my unsolicited opinion and comparison of the snapping feature in Blender 3.6 vs. 4.0.

    Missed one of the least talked about features of snapping. Pressing A over a point marks it, and it will average between the points you pick. You can even pick the same point multiple times to snap closer to it.
    I'm glad to see them put this new snapping feature in, it fixes a genuine design flaw. Snapping works perfectly once you learn how to use it, but you shouldn't have to train for the basics.

    In the snap menu a several snapping types (increment, vertex, face, edge...) can be selected while holding down Shift key

    There is no question, its just better, matching industry standard, heading right way, thumbs up. For us as a cad users or Max or Sketchup users on daily basis, it was just ridiculous that blender was not able to pick initial point exactly and recieving point exactly again. And yes, if you are talking about very simple shapes, not such a pain but more complicated shapes were just not as easy to handle. More control and avoiding guessing is always good move. If they skip pressing B, than it will be just perfect - like in autocad or sketchup etc.
    GOOD JOB BLENDER GUYS👍

    Thabks for this video - If only someone had explained this to me 2 years ago! I did take the time to learn the CAD Transforms add-on, which I love (but may be broken in latest blender versions, not sure). The new 4.0 method to snap looks like a nice shortcut for most of the time am looking forward to trying it.

      There is a new version 2 for 4.0+ with new features.

    The old version works good if you're snappning a cube to a cube or other low poly primitive but for alot other scenarios it still sucks

    Snapping is one of the main things that made me hate Blender compared to 3DS Max and this new snap feature is... actually maybe quicker and nicer than MAX now since you don't have to lock the object before grabbing it by a snap point like in MAX

    As you point out, most used to do the old way wrong. So it is or was not intuitive. Now there is a positive next step it will be understood easier.

    (You keep saying it's the same number of steps. Seems to me that if "G" then "B" counts as 2 steps, then the old way of dragging is 4: G, move, G, control)

    Thank you for this video. I agree with you specially in one point and that it's most people don't understand how snapping in Blender works. I think the main reason for it is that it is not intuitive and confuses a lot of people (me included). I worked for many years with other 3D applications such as Modo, Maya and Cinema 4D. Honestly I think their snapping works better or at least it's less confusing than that in Blender. My suggestion is that Blender team needs to make snapping simpler, more automated and intuitive, such as G+B in Blender 4.0. Nevertheless, I love Blender, and I'm not going to switch that anytime soon.

      Modo's snapping was really quite beautiful. Overall, I thought its UI was a lot more consistent and intuitive than Blender. But I didn't do enough 3D to justify it once it went subscription.

      I've worked with Maya and Softimage back in the day, but not Cinema 4D. And I've actually never heard of Modo. But I'm pretty obsessed with Blender, so I'll probably be with it forever :)

      @@BlenderFrenzy Modo was (and probably still is) the best sub-d modeler. There were things you could do that are a lot harder with other apps. But Blender has made tremendous progress over the years. My biggest problem with it is how poorly thought out the key-mapping is. I can’t tell if it makes sense to the polyglots from other countries or if it’s just that nobody cared enough (or had enough scope of authority) to take all the key maps and say, “let’s bring some sense to this”, but it was easier to remember the relevant keys in… pretty much every app I’ve ever used, in or out of 3D ;)

    Great explanation. What if you're trying to snap a cylinder within a cylinder? Always hard for me to snap one cylinder to be centered within another cylinder. Thanks.

    • @BlenderFrenzy
      @BlenderFrenzy  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, my mistake was that I didn't try it with more complex geometry. For a cylinder, I might select the snap to edge. But with Blender 4.0, it is easier :)

  • @xayzer

    Why are you using incredibly simple shapes like a cube and a cuboid as an example of how well the old system worked? Try something a bit more complex, like an icosphere, and it becomes incredibly obvious how the old system quickly falls apart (lets not even talk about snapping of complex models in edit mode).

    What about adding multiple snap points (b then a) including during slides in edit mesh mode? I can add the points but no one is explaining anywhere how to then _use_ those new points.
    Blender sucks at explaining their tools. Their official manuals never go into the detail we need and the devil is in the details.
    This is _very_ important because there is no way to snap outside of the (10) divisions already set according to the _starting point_ of a slide. You cannot snap a slide to the grid, for example, unless the slide _begins_ on a grid line. Being able to set points might solve this although maybe not. I can't tell because I can't use the damn tool.

    • @BlenderFrenzy
      @BlenderFrenzy  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, it seems that Edge Slide mode has it's own rules. For example it doesn't seem to adhere to the "Absolute Grid Snap" if you have that checked.
      If you want to snap to the grid during Edge Slide mode, press E (for Even) (This help tip appears at the top left corner under the menu bar after Edge Slide mode is activated. Not very intuitive or easy to spot, I agree.)
      If you want to know how the A-B snapping points work, check this video out from Blender: ua-cam.com/video/4cehZJkW7MU/v-deo.htmlsi=ZwpyUxcG21XngS35&t=66
      Although, in Blender 4.1, you have to first press B and select the vertex/edge you want to snap before setting any snapping points.
      I know it's a bit confusing, but I hope that helps!

      @@zedeon6299 Read manual for 4.0 . Cant give you link here. In few words: It allows you to edit mesh/curves with GN but with new node "Selection" and "3d cursor"...Well, kinda hard to explain in few words ;) You'd better try it! For me its great for advanced randomization. Sorry for my English :)

    • @BlenderFrenzy
      @BlenderFrenzy  8 місяців тому +1

      I don't know much about it, but it's like an expansion of geometry nodes that gives you a lot more power and control while modeling. With it I think you can create your own custom modeling tools tailored to your own projects and workflows.

    • @Jaganatha2010

      @@BlenderFrenzy Just 2 Examples: You can use car model, made with traditional modelling and apply your own GN tools to parts you want to be modified. Imagine "Pad maker" tool that make any surface padded. And with "Selection" node you can choose what mesh will be ...padded :) Second example: Get simple human model and create kinda "Reptile skin" GN tool. Apply it where you want. With GN tools its easy and fast, but with GN modifiers you need to choose a whole object to be modified.
