  • This little high D flute is vibrant, punchy and a lot of fun to play. This was one of my "go-to" flutes to take on hikes but I have now switched to an ABS flute for that.
Guillermo Martinez has been making flutes for a long, long time and is no stranger to our flute community. He also makes various frame drums and multi-chambered flutes. Visit him at www.quetzalcoatlmusic.org/
He's very active on Instagram where you can see most of the flutes and drums that he's working on. :) Enjoy!

Sweet voice; but one would expect nothing less from a master like Guillermo.

Guillermo makes some good stuff, I have a low B made of bamboo that he made back in the mid 90's. It was my first bass flutes and I still love and play it.

Guillermo makes narrower bore flutes, just like I do. I knew a guy who played in front of the Whole Foods Market in Albuquerque who played only flutes by Guillermo Martinez. Also, the first flute I made was from Alaskan Yellow Cedar. The wood is sooo easy to carve, it's just like the proverbial knife through butter...

Guillermo is making my high c drone flute right. He’s made my fiancé’s f sharp drone as well. Great craftsman, great flutes.

Three flutes form him on the way. Low C, Mid G and a D/A drone. Super excited... Do you have more of his?

Jonny - it seems like you have commented more about back pressure in a flute than anything else. Could you please sum up in a few words, the gist of your whole philosophy and approach to back pressure in a flute? I am often troubled when a new flute I have made has more back pressure than I would like. The usual remedy for this is to deepen the flue or windway.

Hello, again! Back pressure is definitely a personal preference and comes into play according to one's style and what they ask of the flute. A flute with a lot of back pressure might be remedied by blowing a bit softer, but doesn't give as much in a broad range of articulations when one has to work to put air through it. A flute with too little back pressure may steal most of your breath to play and result in shorter phrasing in your music, too. My personal preference is enough pressure to play while leaving good residual air volume in the mouth for volume changes and articulation. In a nutshell, responsiveness. That being said, I have flutes of all kinds of back pressures and it just requires a bit of adjustment to each instrument. I tell my students to Know Your Flute!

I’m getting a sound processor to play with my flutes.
Do you do any sound gear review/talks? I’ll search video history as well.
