We bought a KX-040-4 about two years ago and absolutely love it. Great machine for the money and amazing how much work this size machine can actually do. We added an aftermarket 36" bucket for digging softer materials like the sandy top-soil we have in our area. We stick with the standard 24" bucket for digging clay and other harder surfaces down deeper. With the quick-disconnect changing buckets is a five minute job, if that. This is especially an excellent machine for stump removal if equipped with the hydraulic thumb. We have the standard four-way blade and haven't yet experienced a situation where it was worth having the six-way blade (plus we have a D3 dozer with a six-way blade when we need that extra feature. All in all, one of Kubota's best pieces of equipment and my favorite of the ten different Kubotas that I have. Just bought the R640 wheel loader a couple of months ago. So far, only disappointments are no throttle lock and the articulating joint extrudes grease excessively and after only a couple of hours of operation. Generally, I am happy with the machine with the two forementioned exceptions. 1. No throttle lock. OMG how on earth did they forget to include this important feature (or am I missing it somehow? I hope so. Is it an option?). 2. The articulating joint top bearing won't retain grease, but rather it extrudes the grease aggressively after only a couple of hours of operation. I can tell when all the grease has been "pinched" out of the joint because the machine starts "squeaking" and "squealing" at the joint to the point that you can not stand it. It's a brand new machine with only 34 hrs and it has done this from the very beginning. If this can't be resolved and is considered a "normal" characteristic I will have to sell this loader (because I don't have the time and/or money to spend greasing a fitting every two hours) and move to a different manufacturer (and one that definitely includes throttle lock capabilities - my bad for not verifying the R640 had it but I didn't even think to ask as this should have been a given with this type machine especially since it's so easy to include with the electronic throttle system). Performance-wise the machine does fine. My unit serves as a piece of farming equipment so we don't need much more in the way of driving speed but we do operate on bumpy dirt roads and have longer transport runs loaded which is why the throttle lock is important to us.

Any thief looking to steal equipment can do a quick Google on any machines features and likely will before they snag something

I love mine, but....having to press a button to arm the thumb every time the control lock is raised is absolutely redicoulous, I will be buying more small excavators in the future but unless this is corrected I will have to look at other brands.
