I am 5,11 and 157 pounds so I wear black dress boots with slim fit black jeans with a white dress shirt . People notice me and Gals smile when I'm out places . !!!
Before I got into to men’s grooming. I wore black jeans, white shirts, black overcoats, leatherjackets & Doc Marten boot/ shoes. It was the style for many years & it looked great! I don’t wear it anymore, but it’s interesting to see the difference from where I am now.
Of course we should and can wear black shoes with jeans. The better option is to not exclusively wear black with our denim. The variety, as you explained, of denim and shoe colors makes all of these combinations work effortlessly. I have black shoes in my collection I purchased specifically to wear with denim only.
I agree with the way you presented this. Casual black shoes with dressier jeans is the only widely acceptable option. I've pulled off black derbies with jeans and a button down shirt, but that's probably as far as I'd recommend. I'm more of a boot guy, so I'm most likely to pair black dress boots with a pair of dark wash jeans in good repair with a solid black tee or polo, dark button down shirt, or possibly even with a blazer and dress shirt.
Hey Captain, I still have trouble wearing dress shoes with jeans. Probably my age and where I grew up, for me, it is either western boots or my old combat boots.
Thanks Antonio. I was surprised that you mentioned black shoes with maroon slim cut jeans because I have black monkstraps but I usually only wear them with my charcoal trousers. For whatever reason it never occurred to me to pair them together until you mentioned it. Good stuff as always
I watched much from you guys, BUT there is a significant difference in German Fashion, especially from Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik and third Reich you see that our German classic wardrobe is way more formal. Black Oxford and darker colors of suits were often worn by people in the 20s-50s in Germany for casual things such as taking a walk. We Germans have this maybe because of our Prussian inheritance, and our more, strict, militaristic, respectful and restraint mentality You guys can look up Thomas Wangenheim who has perfect presentation about German classic menswear
Back in the 70s my look was jeans with black boots, a white button-down shirt, and black blazer. I liked that look, it worked, and I looked good in it.
Great video! I agree with you that brown is more versatile and I get more use out of them. Also, there's so many shades of brown. I still love black shoes in a loafer or brougue with a gray chino. With jeans I would go brown/tan/oxblood.
Black slim (not skinny!) non distressed jeans and a clean black mid ankle dress boot go together great. I don't just say that because it's what I'm wearing today 😂
Last year I bought my first ever dress shoes that werent black, but leathery brown. My entire life I had wrongly assumed that black is the universal colour. I quickly realized I was wrong and this video only reaffirmed that notion ;)
I know you are talking about shoes but black is my go to for jean boots (Docs, Iron Rangers, etc). I would only wear dress shoes with jeans if I also had a dress shirt on (no tie). If it was jeans and t-shirts I'd stick with boots.
I'd wear a slash-pocket zippered jacket, white shirt, button up like a polo, a white undershirt, baggy slacks (as in tapered baggy pants, not jeans), belt, and black or brown Cuban-heeled Italian shoes
Antonio, it depends on shoes, boots and color of shoes and jeans color. I do generally don't wear formal shoes with jeans. With jeans, I only wear sports shoes or casual ones but not formal
Great video! Definitely agree it can be done depending on how you do it. Open laced shoes work better. I have a nice pair of black Derbys that go very well with my dark slim-fit denim. They go just fine with black jeans too of course, and I think they look okay with my grey jeans too. I lean toward a smart-casual look when I do this, rather than straight-up casual though.
Around my area we have a lot of motorcycles . Blue jeans and black boots . They usually have a black vest with them sometimes not . Like you said its the style of the shoe or boot .
Thanks for the general rules. The answer was not a complete clear answer as it would have been nice to show some samples of what you can get away with. I think black casual shoes look great with lighter blue jeans especially with a black shirt. I have wore that combo a lot and I feel good in it. Women look great with that combo too. If one wears brown derby shoes (I know Oxfords are out) with jeans, why not wear black derby shoe? That seems acceptable, what do you think Antonio ? Sure the contrast is not as the brown, but it is combo to be worn. As for the jeans, I am not sure why grey Levis are hard to find, I have not seen them for over 30 years, but casual black shoes seems fine to wear with them too. BTW, speaking of jeans, I have to say who and why would ANYONE ever want to wear those distressed jeans? The sample in the video at 3:26 has holes in them and looks like paint splashed on them , they are the worst, trashy looking. I have seen them a lot, I think those wearing them are trying too hard. I have seen very mature (older) women wearing them, and it just does not work. Even at its most casual, it still does not cut it. I would think those watching these videos are not trying to look trashy. I guess only distressed people wear distressed jeans. :) My point is, if one can wear those, which throws off the whole look, then it does not matter about colors and matches of shoe color any more. Some day, soon, anything will be acceptable. Antonio, great videos, each and every one of them. You are the UA-cam Go To Guy for Men's Fashion !! Thanks !
When you talk about your preference for brown colored shoes, that is also something that is linked to a person's own complexion and hair color, warm vs. cool toned etc.. Naturally, people tend to know what 'works' for them but not why. Often that is the explanation behind it.
Used to do it all the time forty five years ago so why the hassle now. No problemo. A navy blue blazer and a striped dress shirt with 2 buttons undone and black lace ups got all the girls mad with desire. Now I kinda do the same thing except now I'm grandpa swinger. Good look for the spring at Happy Hour. I still can fit that blazer I got for high school graduation pictures back in 1976. Lost the avocado green foulard tie though.
While I don't own the latter, Indigo jeans and black dress shoes can work. Black Chelsea Boots, black jeans, a grey t-shirt, and my white denim jacket are my favorite casual pieces!
Good advice Antonio! In my opinion a blue darkwash denim can work with black shoes if the black shoes are not too formal (I prefer black boots and black loafers with a textured finish as opposed to something like a pair of black oxfords, suede works great too).
Dress code in the Philippines for casual wear in blue collar jobs are usually blue jeans and black shoes..usually the slip ons and work boots. During my cadet and officer days in highschool our type C dress code includes dark blue jeans and our combat boots.
I don't know, maybe you're in a wrong company or they failed to think about it when prescribing uniforms. Blue jeans on black shoes are too bottom heavy
With a business casual type attire I tend to wear black dress shirt or polo, dark jeans and dress boots. It’s seems to go over well. I’m not a big fan of slacks and dress boots. It just seems like an awkward combination. I think as long as you outfit matches well enough you can get away with some stuff. Really depends on the feel and look of it
You can buy some blue laces for your formal shoes. It gives them enough informality tu use them with jeans. Unless it's a very formal event the black formal shows work with a suit, specially if it's Navy Blue.
Thanks for this!! I really struggle with finding well fitted shoes. I found a pair that fit beautifully... only they are black brogue boots. I’ve ALWAYS gone for brown boots with jeans/chinos but I’m not starting to dress my outfits around these boots
Agreed with all points with this video because I've personally gone through it taking advice from you and Aaron. I wear a casual black oxfords with orange laces and orange soles with black to dark jeans. In addition, I know grey foot wear works because I've seen an older gentlemen with a similar build rock those things at Dunkin Donuts in the Philippines. I gave that man a nod. We didn't speak but we knew we were from the same cut. We just sat there relaxed drinking coffee like that corner is our space. hah! :-D
I think it works also because he said all his accessories are black. It will definitely help if he's matching the black shoes with something else - it'll make it look more purposeful.
I wear dark denim jeans with black “designer” dress shoes all the time. Looks great. Black belt, dark button down or polo. It is especially nice in the colder months with my large black leather coat. I think it would have been good to speak on the generic term here, “designer” variations of dress shoes. You know, with the seams or stitching runs lengthwise with the shoe. Never square/box toe though. That’s wack.
Oxblood, a highly underestimated shoe color, is usually avoided by men. Maybe Antonio will make a video about this shoe color so that there is a visual instruction.
To clarify from what you showed do you think loafers look good with black jeans? Brown loafers I think it looks fine personally but I remember reading a comment somewhere else saying they only prefer boots and canvas shoes with jeans but I assume it's all personal preference.
I think dark blue jeans with cap toe oxfords, with a nice black belt and button down dress shirt is a good look, I think. I don’t know that well fitted nice clothes and good shoes is ever bad, so long as the hues don’t clash.
Antonio, at 2:21 I would have worn the outfit on the right back in the old days, but not the one on the left. Of course walking around like that today would be out of the question and you know what People would "think" I was right? I won't say it as I don't want to offend anyone.
Arnie looks badass wearing jeans with black boots in The Terminator movies. He would have looked like a cowboy if he wore brown boots! James Dean didn't wear brown shoes with his jeans either.
Yes, it does. Your leathers match. Also, make sure your metals match (ie belt buckle, shoe buckles, and watch). Wedding rings are one of the exceptions that need not match your other metals.
Jeans is a casual clothing, so it makes sense to pair with casual shoes instead of dress shoes. A thick platform black boots go very well with a dark cuffed selvedge denim with a black biker jacket. Saw that on a Calvin Klein advert. Why do black dress shoes come into the picture?
Hi Antonio. You said you shouldn't mix casual denim with formal black shoes. But what if those black shoes are like sneaker/running shoe mix or winter shoe? Does that make it any more acceptable?
You can mix informal shoes like sneakers with denim. The problem is mixing shoes that are too formal with the casual nature of denim. Extreme example wearing black cap-toe oxfords (the most formal shoes) with a tracksuit.
Black cowboy boots especially look amazing with jeans! Also black penny loafers and black wingtip shoes. But classic black oxfords is what you shouldn't wear with jeans.
Not completely off subject, but i was wondering if you could help... i am interested in a pair of rogue boots from Thursday boots, i am interested in in the dark olive color. what pants go with that? i have never heard of the color nor imagined it would be a shoe color, and interested in the pairings... or am i better off with just brown? thanks
It depends on the shoes, obviously, but I'd argue that black shoes are more likely to go with jeans than much of anything else. Those pale, distressed jeans in the video would look fine with black motorcycle boots or lace-ups, for example. Black shoes go with just about anything.
Now I need your opinion. Saw a young guy (20-22 years old), he dresses more mature and nice, with a coat that he had open with a loose scarf, shirt underneath. But what I reacted and did not think looked nice, was that he was wearing boots and just the white edge ends on the shoe, the trouser legs ended, they were matte black jeans and they were straight and not folded up. I thought it got ugly when it looked like he had bought jeans with too short trouser legs when they ended up at the height of the boots' edge. Am I right or wrong about where the trouser legs ended?
Loved the combo of maroon jeans with black double-monks formal shoes that you showed... 🖤 would definitely try it.👍🏻 Your shoes collection is amazing. 👌🏻
Antonio, I'm going to go off topic with this comment -- slightly. If you wear a blue blazer with brass buttons, do you still have to 'match metals'? That is, wearing the aforementioned blazer, would my belt buckle (and buckle on monk strap shoes) have to match the yellow color of brass buttons? Or, is this a case of being able to break the rules?
All black leather sneakers are more limited restricted to monochromatic outfits. While black uppers with white sole leather sneakers are more versatile. Same for the canvas sneakers counterparts.
@@alvinsanchez967 that means that we can't wear black leather sneakers with contrasting outfits, I think we can wear all black sneakers with black jeans an any colour on top of it.
Well said. I rarely bring black into my wardrobe; usually I limit it to outerwear only. I don’t think that black dress shoes pair well with blue jeans at all. Brown is always the way to go in that area.

about two years late ... lol. I think a matte, not shiny, black shoe is perfectly fine with jeans.
It really depends on the shoes. I'd wear black boots with jeans. Thanks for this video Antonio!
Yeah, but I wouldn't wear a mirror shine cap toe oxford with jeans. The shoe has to be a little less formal

Depends on the jeans. And the shoes. Never ever ever wear light denim and dress shoes. Love these videos
But what if the shoes is light tan colored double monk strap with medalions?

I have these nice brown boots that fit perfectly with my jeans, i wear them together as much as possible
I quite agree with you, formal black shoes only with dark indigo design jeans
Believe it or not Antonio I have tried this combo and it worked, but I also used a more casual style of shoe (open laced) and that helped pull it off.
I love wearing oxblood shoes and boots specially with black clothes. Sadly not many vids covering them.
