  • The Africa Twin DCT is a one of a kind adventure bike that makes riding off-road a possibility for so many but is it the best bike out there for your off-road dreams? I am a relatively new rider and this was my first ever off-road excursion so I found myself in a unique position to learn on the DCT. It was a steep learning curve but this is what I found out that could help you with your riding.

    My DCT lesson came just after I bought my AT. I was at a stop sign, ready to pull out onto a highway, waiting for a car to go by. As the car approached I started to rev up, as one would with a manual, and found myself out on the highway. Damn near ran right into the side of the car... close call, good lesson.

    Dittos for your channel. Nice honest info.
    I ride an '18 ATAS DCT and love it. In May 2019 we did the MABDR in 3 days of rain. I was riding in S1 and I felt it was shifting too often. Then went to full manual and wasn't satisfied there either. Went to S2 and that was magic. At least 2 GS's went down because of stalling. After going through a big mud hole a GSer said it was like a tractor. I love this bike.
    I am near Ocean, NC and ride up your way often.
    Ride safe

      Okay, this is perfect and I need to get a lot out.
      First, I head down to Wilmington and New Bern every now and again. We should ride a bit. Thank you so much for your experience on the MABDR because I have to get ready for our trip this summer. I am REALLY hoping it isn't muddy because that would significantly complicate my experience. ;-)

    Your comment at 6:45 is exactly why you need a left hand rear brake, but not the parking one. I am researching how to make one for my 2016 DTC Crosstourer, which I don’t really off-road with, more of just a two up bike that works great on dirt roads too. A few people have made one for AT but some manufacturer needs to step up and offer a kit.

    I agree with you on using the rear "emergency" break while having to use both foot on the ground. Perhaps if Honda makes the left lever a real rear wheel brake, could help with slow off-road handling. Also having a large "Neutral" button on the left handle could help with the "whisky throttle moments" and act like a clutch disengage, it will be a matter of training the brain to push that button instead of the clutch lever..
    Cheers!

      *Apparently 40 percent of Honda bike sales are now DCT (automatic transmission) models.* I guess this means that many bikes will now be offered in either DCT/Auto *_and_* traditional (clutch + gears) models. I chose the Africa Twin 1100 Adventure Sports DCT bike, because I previously rode a maxi-scooter (Suzuki Burgman 650cc) and wanted a 'real looking' bike. Very true. I can't imagine getting into that spot where you hold on for dear life knowing you can't stop or letting go of the bars and hoping for the best. Yikes. Thank you very much for watching and leaving feedback.

    • @lancealbon46
      @lancealbon46 3 роки тому +1

      I also had a “Whisky Throttle” moment with my DCT. My bike stopped with the front wheel pointed to the sky as it leaned on a cliff and I fell off backwards. I’m wondering if we need to change our instincts from trying to grab the clutch, to trying to push that “neutral” button in those circumstances? Maybe something to practice so that we get the muscle memory? I don’t know. But that was a scary situation.
      Bret Tkacs also suggested changing the position of the handle bar raisers on the bike. He removed the actual bar, and then turned those standard bar raises (the loops that hold the bars onto the bike) around 180 degrees. Then replaced the bars. The new angle, in his opinion, is better suited for off road.

    Great review and tips about the DCT pros&cons.
    Glad you mentioned how much more important the throttle hand is with DCT when offroad.
    With the newer models (after 2017) equipped with Throttle by Wire (TBW) your point becomes more relevant.
    It is definitely not for beginners; it takes hours and miles of practice to get that throttle tamed.

      @@BeGoneForGood yes, 40 percent is an accurate figure (for the *_Honda_* brand). People forget very often that "Adventure" sticker on the bike will not pull them on the top of the hill or get them through the mud if they have no training in doing so. Honda makes great with DCT and I think this is the future. He covered 274.000km so far and broke one actuator motor of the DCT after 142.000km, had to service the front fork at 200.000km and 3 years and at 216.000km another actuator motor DCT, at 257.000km the ingnition lock went and at 270.000km the fuel pump. He never had to fill in oil between the 24 oil changes and the clutches are still original. I'm going to start using rear break as to emulate clutch control, great suggestion!, Thanks. I love my DCT and after 2 years riding it, I'm still trying to find the best combination of throttle control and ride setup. On every ride I do i always go off-road and quite often i go through technical sections. So, let's say you arrive to a technical section of your ride, flat terrain, no big drops or steps, but large loose rocks and sand. What works better for you? Do you turn on traction control? Do you ride through the section on sport (which level), drive or manual?.

      The rear brake will make all your slow maneuvers so much easier once you get used to it. When I go off-road, even just slight gravel, I turn off my traction control, dump the ABS, and go to gravel. I keep my gearing on sport 2 always. Sometimes I will manually change gears if I run into hills but generally I just let the bike do its thing.

      That is a VERY reasonable fear. On flat ground without being tired, the pick up is pretty easy. Once you add in those other things though, it gets tougher and tougher. I would always suggest having at least two people on any off-road trip just to be safe. I know I am not comfortable being off-road without a second set of eyes or hands available.

      Carlos, I haven't been on a GS so take this opinion with a grain of salt but I have always really loved Honda. I just love how reliable Hondas have always been and the AT is MUCH closer to my budget capabilities. Obviously, the BMW is a great bike as well because so many accomplished riders choose it as well. My guess is that you could get either bike and be super happy with your purchase but for me, it is the AT.

    5:20 in to the vid you mention getting kicked back and not knowing if a clutch would have helped you from getting whiskey throttled out. I am considering a DCT Africa Twin so please don't confuse me with a Troll but this is the single biggest concern I have with the DCT as I ride hard enduro multiple days a week and my levers are always covered as we are taught so if I do get jolted having my levers covered it forces me to naturally grab my clutch and kill the power even if I did grab a big old handful of throttle. I think if I was a less aggressive rider and just crossing the country a DCT would be perfect but I want to not only cross the country but ride trails and even get into some moderate single track so sticking with the clutch is probably the best way to go for me - not for everyone. Another stumper for DCT and me is if I have to spin the bike around 180' there is no clutch to pop the back end loose and spin the bike on my hip. Unfortunate because I think the DCT is awesome and better for 95% of the riders out there. Great video, thank you.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  2 роки тому +1

      I don't think of you as a troll at all because all of your points seem completely accurate and also because everyone kind of has to figure it out for themselves. As an experienced rider and one that is comfortable with your current set up, the DCT would probably cause problems. For me, the DCT has limited drawbacks as you mentioned but allows me so much more access than I would otherwise have without a significant amount of learning. Inevitably, there are tradeoffs with any choice we make and we need to determine which of those tradeoffs we are willing to accept for the experience we crave. I am just glad we all get options to choose from as we define our priorities.
      Thank you so much for watching and leaving feedback as it helps me and others understand different points of view on this subject.

      Albeit possibly a bit late to this conversation, I’ll offer my two cents here since I think I know exactly what you’re saying. I think. LOL. I have two DCT bikes - 2021 Rebel 1100 and the 2021 ATAS. I love both bikes for all the same reasons people love theirs. On the rare occasions I would prefer a clutch with the Rebel, I can still manoeuvre in slower, tighter situations with a high degree of confidence. Partially because the bike has a 27.5” seat height, thus a low center of gravity, and partially because the bike is easy to manipulate. I did have a few new bike pucker moments while working the rear brake as a dragging anchor for stability, but I’m better doing these now. And those situations are rare. But I do need to continually practice that skill to remain sharp. However, the ATAS is a bit trickier due to the nature of the riding.
      I recently returned from a 2200 km trip and the ATAS rode like a 70’s Lincoln Continental on the highway. Even on the secondary and tertiary asphalt patchwork highway and biways, it performed comfortably well. Never an issue until I pulled off on a gravel access road when nature called for me or one of the other riders. Doing U-turns on gravel with a DCT, especially without that safety net, engine controlling manual clutch, was sketchy at best and downright dangerous at worst. One time the front tire caught some soft, loose gravel right at the edge of the ditch. Had I had a clutch, I could have killed the momentum and stopped. I couldn’t do that with the DCT. I had one option and that was go into the ditch, hope there weren’t any hidden obstacles in the tall grass, and ride to the other side and back onto a road. The bike did not go down, I did not panic, even with a couple bumpy whiskey throttles until I gained control, and I then recovered and rode out to the other side. I also had a scary moment at a gravelly gas station trying to take a turn too sharply, fully loaded with gear, and tried to accelerate to keep the bike upright. Again, recovery went well, even with a twitchy throttle, near panic pucker drop. Both incidents were, in a word, embarrassing. But I also learned that this was possibly my major flaw (or the nature of the DCT). Doing slow stuff poorly or improperly can fast accelerate into something more dangerous.
      On my long ride home, I reviewed the DCT situations on both bikes. Since my Rebel 1100 is mainly for city and some shorter highway riding, it does what I need it to do, and I can better manage those slower, speed technical manoeuvres. It’s a sporty naked cruiser but nothing rides like an ADV on long highway rides. But I’m seriously reconsidering my DCT relationship with such a top heavy ADV bike. I’ve got another bike, a T7, that I’m experimenting with and comparing situations I’ve had and could have with the ATAS. I’ve not yet made my decision, but I’m considering two things: the ATAS with DCT is the wrong bike for me OR a manual ATAS with a Honda quicker shifter and Auto-blipper is a better, safer option, especially since I like the ATAS so much. Given that it is also 2/3 (or more) the cost of a Multistrada or GS, I would really like to stick with my chosen ride because in every situation except those slow speed, off-road or gravelly gas station parking lot situations.
      My gut tells me that I’d miss the DCT and that I know I’d feel safer and more confident with a manual clutch in those more technically demanding situations, especially since I can get the quick shifter in the ATAS to perform pseudo similarly like a DCT (I’ve already confirmed the QS and someone has already posted a UA-cam video having installed one), but I could possibly ride more aware of my and the DCT’s limitations and proceed accordingly. I guess my thoughts to share with you, if you have the opportunity, is to test ride a AT with DCT before you purchase. Do some low speed stuff. Then do the same on using a manual. I’m not unhappy with my bike. Quite the contrary. But I should have test rode both. And with what I know know now (after purchase) about the quick shifter, I might have made a different decision. The AT is just too big a bike to not feel confident and in control.
      Sorry for this long-winded ramble. I do hope something I’ve babbled and shared will help you with your final decision. Best of luck. Ride safe! 👍

      @@michaelahr1 I’m glad my poor CSI analysis of to dirt DCT or to not dirt DCT made sense. LOL. An aside, I’ve still not seen anyone post side-by-side comparisons of manual vs DCT slow speed and technical manoeuvres. MotoJitsu posted dragging the rear brake but on a scooter. Not the same thing. Another guy from the Ozark regularly posts of himself doing parking lot drills using his Rebel 1100. Lastly, Bret Tkacs posted an Africa Twin DCT video doing u-turns on a dirt trail, but nothing much more than that. He did say, and I agree, the DCT outperforms when there is a fear of stalling. Keep it in first and roll on. I think the moto community would be well served by the comparison. A series of side-by-side drills illustrated by a highly skilled rider and an average Joe or Josephine. I’m in no way an expert rider, but I suspect even the best riders would find those pucker moments more difficult to manage with a DCT. Or not. But that’s my working theory. 😁

    Thank you very much for the video. I have been considering an ATAS and am trying to determine whether or not to get the dct. I’m already riding a dct on my NC750X and really like it. But I’m also doing more dirt on it now and am considering the upgrade for both dirt and touring.
    This video by Mototrek got me concerned about staying with the dct: ua-cam.com/play/PLlnVenx8xMMGDgNvltrvc-50BD-molsHE.html
    I could see myself on a Forest Service road somewhere and coming to this situation.
    I like the way he taught to do this but obviously he relied heavily on the clutch to keep the rear wheel from spinning when he didn’t want it to.
    It sounds like you did this same thing but used the parking brake to make it happen.
    Did this work well for you? We’re you able to feather the parking brake on and off like he does with the clutch so that the rear wheel would roll when you want and not turn when you didn’t want it to?
    Thanks again for the video. This is the closest I have come to getting an answer to this.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 роки тому +1

      I had some drops like that when I was riding in Utah and that is exactly how I dealt with it. The parking brake is different from the clutch but I would argue that it might be easier to "feather" as it is pretty much a static system. We have all eased on and off brakes before. I obviously can't make recommendations for any one else's riding but I had similar concerns about the DCT before testing it over and over again in Utah. Now I absolutely love it. It likely won't be my last DCT.
