Test rode the 2020 AT around Buriram from Buriram Honda (Thailand) this year waiting on mechanics performing 48k major shim service on my 2016 CB500X. Really didn't like the DCT. Among many other reasons, lane splitting Bangkok traffic often enough sees me permanently feathering the clutch, i doubt DCT would suffice.

So, I added power (maybe too much!). The bike dropped beneath me, and as I was getting ready to let it go and jump to stand beside it, the handlebar hit (really hard) my left hip. It is painful and I might have fractured my pelvic bone. But, the more painful is that I do not know how it can happen. I would be grateful if you can let me know what I possibly did wrong. Great video as always Bret. I'd like to add to your "this is not a novice maneuver" comment. You art correct, it's not a novice maneuver. Maybe it's just me and my version of the maneuver and the mechanics of performing it but I would add that this involves a good bit of hand work. Hands are as busy as the lower half of the body in my opinion. I feather the clutch in conjunction with rolling in or out of the throttle. What say you Bret?

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs  4 роки тому

      It turns out this is one thing that the DCT kicks ass at... better than a manual clutch. You can do it on either but the simplicity of the DCT gives it the nod however to do this on a DCT as a less skilled rider will make the DCT more dangerous.

    How do you like the Africa Twin vs. KTM Adventure?

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs  4 роки тому +1

      790 Adventure? In my mind the 790 is still the class leader off road for the big ADV bike category (we could debate the T7 of course). Looking at balance, range, power and electronic rider aids it is still bad ass off road. Change that to a discussion about reliability, touring or riding double up and things change. In the end it depends on what you want your bike to do.
      I had money in hand to buy the first gen Africa Twin and only walked because of the lack of cruise control.
      I could be happy with either (as long as the bike is dependable).

      @@BretTkacs yes the 790 Adventure. I am new to adventure bikes. I have limited dirt bike experience and love watching your videos. Last summer I bought a 2014 BMW F700GS and I love it. I figure I will get some experience there and then buy something new later. Thank you for your videos.

    so most instructors I have seen recommend the bike behind you with your back to it when picking it up. have you found picking up the bike while its in front of you better / easier?

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs  4 роки тому +2

      I do not teach that method and never use it. It is more difficult and you are more likely to injure your back unless you bike is resting on luggage or crashbars.
      Sounds like a video topic to me...

    I see in this video you stick a leg out in tight and slow turns to help you with balance. I feel this is more to keep yourself up than the bike itself. Am I wrong?
    Also, is there a point (speed) where you wouldn't do that? With too much momentum wouldn't you risk that leg be propelled way back and risk being caught by the back wheel? With no rack or luggage, of course.

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs  4 роки тому +1

      watch careful... my legs is NOT down, it is forward like you would ride a dirtbike. I am throwing forward to plant for the pivot. It is not about holding up the bike. If you watch other videos I do or some of the early slides you will see my leg is always up. It has to do with the amount of lean the bike has an how tight I am sliding the bike.
