    i honestly thing that it should be mandatory to have sign language in schools. like you have to have that as a choice to learn to graduate.

      Amelia Takahashi I completely agree! I’m homeschooling my daughter so we are learning it together. I feel it’s so important to learn. It breaks my heart how separate the deaf community is. I hope to bridge this gap in my own little corner of the world

      Everything's mandatory in schools now *eye roll* I got a sheet of "electives" my junior year, and 3/4 of them were pre-printed on, because they were anything but elective. I don't need French or gym as much as I'll need Python.
      I'm learning now, for my own reasons, but through my entire life I have never encountered anybody from the Deaf community. I have never needed ASL, any more than I have needed Mandarin. What I did need in high school, however, was to use that time to learn Spanish, as from the moment I got my first job to even this day, I frequently encounter Spanish speakers with no English. And it filled my foreign language requirement all the same Instead of making this and that mandatory because students might need it, why not have counselors sit down and help students decide for themselves what they need?
      (Sorry, just had a lengthy and arduous enrollment session where this happens frequently because people say 'this should be mandatory'. I had to take a semester of ballet ffs)

      (Though my mom's an elementary education major, so I do see the benefits of learning it, I just also see the problems of adding things to a curriculum so full that children no longer get recess)

      nikoniko67834 one thing that REALY helped me with the alphabet is when you listen to a song, sign the first letter of every syllable. At first it is hard and you mess up, but after a while it is a piece of cake. Also instead of talking to myself like I normally did I would sign out the words I was thinking. Now I know the letters perfectly.

    Literally thanking God that you say you are learning PSE not ASL. As a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), I cringe when I see videos on UA-cam saying they are using ASL when they are using signed English or PSE.

      Adina Kasimoff, hi I'm also learning pse on my own. I'd love to try learn asl but I can't afford any classes at the university and I don't know of any classes outside of that. My questions to you/your parents: (1) do dead people find t disrespectful if someone tries to communicate with them using pse instead of asl, and (2) although different languages are they closed enough that they would understand most of what the other is trying to communicate? (If I'm learning pse and run into someone that uses asl, would it be too confusing to communicate with each other?
      Thanks!

    • @amazingxadina959
      @amazingxadina959 7 років тому +29

      No! It wouldn't be confusing at all. The main difference between PSE and ASL is the sentence structure. PSE isn't a language but ASL is because it has a grammar and structure. Deaf people appreciate any effort to for people to communicate with them in any form of sign language and chances are they will be more than happy to help you practice your skills!

    This video is so encouraging! I have a deaf brother, we adopted him about 3 1/2- 4 years ago but I had already started learning ASL a year before that. I learned a lot pretty quickly though that’s because I have a gift of learning language. I also forget them pretty quickly. Anyway after a year of teaching my brother sign and it not working out well we decided to go the oral method. That worked really well for him but because of that I wasn’t signing all the time and lost a lot of the language so I started watching videos and such. Now I am completely relearning the language again to have a better understanding of it and it’s a struggle even though I had already learned it. Sooo yeah. My point is, keep going even if it’s hard, it is difficult but there is a reward at the end!

    I'm taking my second year of an ASL class and the grammar and syntax is difficult for me to learn and use in conversations but PSE is so much easier for me since I know and understand the signs but the syntax is what messes me up. PSE is a lot easier for me to conversate with but knowing ASL is still very useful, thank you for making these videos!

    Also if you go into a deaf community some deaf people may find that PSE is disrespectful and most won't understand because PSE is just signed English and ASL is not English. They are a completely different language. The sentence structure is verrryyyy different. Its important to learn the culture and how deaf people feel towards the hearing and such.

      did you watch the video? She explains she cannot learn ASL as there is no classes available close to her, i'm sure if she explained to the deaf community she is limited to only learning PSE and will be going to collage to learn ASL they would understand, and respect her for making the effort.

I have taken ASL courses with Deaf peers and they have always been helpful and gracious with the mistakes and trying to learn. They understand it's different from spoken English and will be able to understand PSE too.

    When i was in high school we had the option of taking a foreign language, i took ASL for just under 2 years was pretty good at it but it got hard and i lost my motivation and dropped the class, now i am SERIOUSLY regretting my decision when i was younger. I am in a class now and today i taught them some BASICS of ASL (not PSE) and they seemed to really enjoy it! I actually used a few music videos that were interpreted to show them how IMPORTANT facial expression is when signing to a deaf person. All and all i think it went well and I, when i move back to the USA, am looking at going back into ASL :) Keep up the great work on your videos, you are amazing and give so much inspiration!

    She has lifeprint as a resource and that source also has the basics of ASL and helps you with learning the proper grammar for ASL and the differences between PSE which is basically signed English where as ASL doesn't use article words and like being verbs I believe. I'm still learning to and it's a great source to learn from. I've taken and actual ASL class through my hospital and the signs my teacher used or her and her friends within the deaf community preferred to use are the same as the ones lifeprint uses.

    • @mommanewfie
      @mommanewfie 8 років тому +7

      +Dannielle Cousin I agree, lifeprint teaches ASL, and it's really a great resource for learning ASL grammar and syntax. I think the hard thing for most hearing people to accept about ASL, myself included, is that we're used to being taught the rules to a language. Think back to English classes you're had, you're always taught rules and how the words work together. Deaf culture doesn't often do that. Yes in classes you will be taught rules, but not like in English. It's not as cut and dry, so the best way to learn it is to watch people use it and interact with the Deaf culture. Even though lifeprint doesn't really teach ASL grammar like we're used to in English class you will pick up the grammar from watching the videos. I think it's amazing! I love lifeprint!

    Your are doing a fantastic job! I wish I could have a student like you in my ASL class! I only noticed 2 things... 1) watch that your signing with your dominant hand. I noticed quite a bit of switching back and forth between forming the signs with your dominant and non-dominant hand. FIx it now before you enter an interpreter program :) 2) you signed "weird" for force, easy mistake! force should be made with your dominant hand and cross the back of your non-dominant hand, thinking of holding the back of someone's neck and forcing their head down. Weird is the same hand shape just goes across your face! Keep it up and best of luck to you as you continue on your ASL journey!! - an ASL teacher

    I started teaching the basics to my daughter as she's a baby and baby sign language helps you communicate with your child, and I started loving it and will continue to teach her sign language to later have her be able to communicate with anyone who doesn't have the ability to speak or hear. I love that I understand and can follow parts here and there of this video by reading your hands. 😊🙂

    Hi! I am re-learning sign language. I never took any "formal" classes on learning sign language I just learned from the people who were deaf that taught me how to talk(?) to them, and now, like you I am teaching myself thru internet videos. Let me just say that I think you have done an amazing job with your videos. Your voice and signing is easy to listen to and watch. It all makes sense and is easy to understand. Sometimes signing is hard to watch because it goes so fast. You have done great and I just wanted to also thank you for taking your time to make these videos.. they take time and patience--especially being outdoors. :) I encourage to you keep up with your work- maybe you can go on to teach classes on signing. :)

    She answered the "how" but not really the "why", except for saying broadly that it was important for all to communicate both hearing impaired and hearing. But still curious why she became interested on a personal level 3 years ago? For instance, does she have a family member or friend who is hearing impaired who she wanted to communicate with? Where did the desire come from?

      I really want to study sign language when I'm in Uni and for me, I didn't have any contact with hearing impaired before.... Yeah before what? Before I read the book "Of Sound Mind" by Jean Ferris. It's a fictional story but it has a lot of powerful statements about being hearing impaired and about signing. There's also a very interesting foreword. It just really got me interested in the whole signing community. I'm also really interested in languages(mostly spoken) and their origins. So I'd be happy to find out about sign languages and their existence because they are just so different from any language I've studied so far.

      It's also great for talking in Church, when someone's sleeping, to someone who is in the room with you while you're on the phone (the person on the other side of the line won't hear you signing to the person in the room), and for talking along long distances without yelling. I find that I use it when I'm too sad to talk or when I'm really tired at night.
      In a lot of situations, ASL is a ton more expressive than English, such as describing people or places. There are some things you just can't translate from Sign Language to English without losing a lot of the meaning.

      Hello! I am an ASL tutor. The signs are the same, yes. The only thing is you will have a lot to relearn. If you want to one day really communicate with Deaf in their American Sign Language, your sentence structure (syntax) will substantially change and therefore if you learn the signs I say just learn it to ASL grammar while you're at it and then when you meet Def people you'll be able to understand them.

    • @joyanametz
      @joyanametz 8 років тому +6

      Libby I think you are inspiring...what you do isn't "crap." It's just different than ASL. And it's cool that you are aware of that and humble as you learn. Kepp up the good work and I hope that when you take ASL interpreting courses that it goes well for you!

    • @joyanametz
      @joyanametz 8 років тому +10

      But being as that she doesn't really know yet or grasp the difference, the correct approach in my opinion is not to confront her rudely. But to see her heart is to learn. As in any way to correct someone you do it respectfully so that they listen and are more apt to sincerely hear what you have to say. Again, these are my opinions as a Communications major...people respond and learn to change better when confronted with genuine concern for help and not solely to condemn and rebuke.

      weirddragon 202 Hi, just wanted to give you an example. Signing Exact English (SEE--not a language): I am going to the store today (signed word-for-word). Pidgin Sign English (PSE--not a language): I go store today (basically leaves out words like to, the, a, an, etc). American Sign Language (ASL--an actual language like Spanish or French and has its own structure and syntax): TODAY STORE I GO. There are signs that we would use in ASL that definitely would not be used if you were signing PSE....ASL uses classifiers such as your index finger to represent a person or the '3' hand to represent a car and so on). Hope this helps.

    You are so right about more people needing to know sign language so that it will break down the barriers of communication between the deaf and hard of hearing and the hearing. I'm deaf and my mom, older brother, and one of my daughters all have hearing loss from hereditary progressive nerve deafness. My mom and brother are deaf but have the cochlear implant, I am deaf but do not have the cochlear, and my daughter has severe/profound hearing loss and wears hearing aids. As it is progressive loss, she too will be deaf one day, as it happened with me, my mom and brother. The funny thing is, no one in my family knows or uses sign language. My mom is a pro lip reader, so I grew up never learning to sign. Now, I wish I knew how to sign and had taught my daughter as she was growing up. She's now 17 and wears two hearing aids. I wish her and I could sign to each other. So, you make me want to learn! I thank you for that. Awesome video and message!!

      I like pse more because the grammatical structure is more natural (i don't know how else to describe it). I feel like I understand sign language and learn faster with pse. I'm also learning mostly from Libbey's music videos. If you do that too, don't focus on just one video. I picked up more common words by going through all of the videos.

    Glad to see you learning sign. I think more people would benefit from learning it as a foreign language. Make sure you remember your facial expressions! Facial expression is vital in all of sign. It can change the meaning of a sentence entirely.
    Good luck and keep up the practice. There are many many apps, and so many resources. Pse is good to have because it follows our conversations patterns. Also watch Deaf.tv to build your receptive skills too! I teach asl as well as I am a professional interpreter! ILY

    I'm losing my hearing. I was concerned with knowing ASL, you know, and that breakdown between deaf and hearing. You give me hope. I'm vlogging my journey to learning ASL and find that I sometimes switch into PSE. It's an easy mistake since I love the written word, in English. I'm still only 2 months into learning, but making a video every night really helps keep me thinking about ASL. I just jot down thoughts on my day and tell about my day in ASL. Then I watch it as I add CC. It reinforces the signs and I'm remembering faster and more often. Thanks for sharing your journey with the world! Best of luck!
