I LOVE Genki Sushi. We have here on the islands but i’m not sure about the mainland. It is kind of expensive but for a very uncommon once in a while it’s pretty nice. The menu here is a lot smaller and different in the US but the conveyor belt/roundabout belt is just too fun pass up on from time to time.
I don’t know of any in San Diego but there is a really good sushi diner next to the crappy community college I got kicked out of when I was living with my dad.
There's a Genki Sushi in Hilo, Hawaii. It's small, but an absolutely amazing place to eat. The food comes out on the conveyor and is so good. It's a little slice of Japan in the States. I was surprised to see the Genki mascot/logo on the 2nd sign in the video. I had no idea it was a legitimate chain in Japan. I love it even more now❤.
Damn Hawaii has the best Japanese stuff in the US. I wish I lived there when I was old enough to actually want to try sushi. At least I got to try mochi.
In the USA, there's the Kura chain of this and I usually get more for the unique cuts of fish, like eel, yellowtail, albacore, scallops, otoro, and toro. In Japan though, I remember these places give you more cuts/pieces per plate esp for the toro and it's also generally cheaper depending on the chain.
Yeah, there is superstition around the number four, especially since it is pronounced similarly to “death”. The same is also true for China as well. Four is generally considered unlucky for that reason.
Aaaah I've actually been there, and had the exact same sardine sushi! My fave was the prawn seared with pepper mayo, immediately became my number one fave sushi I have ever eaten.
Whenever I go back and visit family in Japan, there's at least 1 trip to a revolving sushi place like this. I think we know it's not the best sushi, but it's most of the time 7/10 for us and for the price, it's hard to beat. Love the vids.
Number 4 also sounds like the word for "die" in Mandarin and Cantonese so it's an inauspicious superstition to have it as your number or in your phone number basically lmaoo
For some reason I totally missed out on the conveyer belt experience on my first trip to Japan (although I still had sushi, ramen, etc). Going again, and definitely adding this to day 1 lol
The PlayStation 4 changed things around for the number 4 in Japan now, no need to worry about death🤗 as you see the PlayStation 4 is still well and alive proving that 4 obviously means massive success 😉😏
My favorite sushi is the kind with a pocket of tofu around the rice (with just the bottom of the rice not covered), the shortrib sushi looks great and I wish I could find it here in Sweden. I don't eat fish because I hate the taste and texture of it, so a place like this would definitely be on my itinerary if/when visiting Japan! I'll probably eat a lot from convenience stores too because cheap and looks amazing haha
@jenniferpearce1052 Ooo nice to have a name of it! I could totally have just that kind if having sushi haha I don't eat fish or most seafood (some shrimp and crayfish is fine on occasion, but that's about it) and I don't like seaweed or avocado so I'm kinda limited with sushi 😅 I do like sushi rice though, so the tofu pocket is by far the best, and maybe some piece with shrimp/prawn, some with egg on despite it having some seaweed around it, same with avocado with seaweed despite not being a fan but I can eat it because of the rice haha
I’ve only eaten conveyor sushi once. It was at a tourist place in my Canadian homeland. The sushi chef was in the centre making sushi like a madman. For it being in a tourist area, the sushi itself was relatively affordable. The most expensive plate I had was about $8 for 3-4 pieces. And the sushi itself was probably some of the tastiest sushi I have ever had in my life.
