Bought a bottle tonight, now it beats Bushmills as my favorite Irish budget. I was amazed at the complete lack of ethanol on the nose, great review John
They are my two favourite Irish blended whiskies also, Powers and Bushmills. If I was stranded on a desert Island, like Cpt Jack Sparrow, I would like to be accompanied by Keira Knightley and a few barrels of Powers Gold Blend. Also, if there was an Abrakebabra on the island that would be very much appreciated.
Hands down my favorite reasonably priced Irish whiskey. Discovered it about 16 years ago at a Real Irish pub in NYC “The Four Faced Liar” and became my go to from that moment forward. Definitely has a more complex and sweeter taste than Jameson. Big Honey notes, tiny bit of almost a cardamom and citrus nose. Little bit of the pepper in the back of the throat. Beautifully smooth and incredibly drinkable neat or on the rocks.
I don't pretend be an Whiskey expert but Powers is my all time favourite. Whats not to like about this Gold? Complexity and great value. All the spicy notes and the right colour. Just love it. Great review as well.
Love Powers Gold label It is my Everday whiskey. However, I am a little confused as the label on mine claims 43.2 proof. If I remember, correctly, they increased it to that a number of years ago. and while they raised the price...it is an improvement. Possibly, Ireland's didn't change???
I used to be bushmills till I had powers, powers is excellent lower end whiskey my favourite. It’s great on its own great on ice and water and great with a drop of coke.
Creamy, butterscotch, oak, toffee, pepper and peaty heat. Dense mouthfeel. Long finish. Enjoyable. Not light at all. Complexity is there if you pair with saltier food. Enjoying a glass alongside your review. Cheers!
It’s very interesting how different people can smell very different flavors. I do not smell lemon or pepper or cloves. I smell and taste a lot of butter, banana bread, and baking spices. Very good whiskey! Definitely a new favorite Irish.
The last time I was back in Ireland, my Uncle gave me an old bottle of Powers. It was excellent, better than the newer versions I've bought in the USA. My Grandfather was a Cooper, back in Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. When he came to American, he worked as an electrician.
I quite like my whisk(e)y from all corners of the earth. Redbreast is gorgeous as is the Bushmills, where we had a tour in 2009. At 1608 it’s the first permitted one to be produced and is gorgeous. Blends are just as wonderful as the singles as you demonstrate here, and you really need to try Slane which I bought here in England at Waitrose. Stunning drink! May the road rise up to meet you. PS. You need a title intro like your Man-in-shed!
Loving these videos John, some great background info and history. My father-in-law like many of the older generation would ask for a yoke and a yoke when they wanted a Guinness and whiskey. Sláinte ☘️
I was so delighted when i finally found a bottle here on Oahu...Cheehuu. I did compare Jameson triple distilled. Hands down POWERS Gold Label, much more approachable and inviting to Irish Whisky...For the price about 35 dollars here in Hawaii...WONDERFUL..Mahalo for your great in depth history...A TOAST TO YOU BRADDUH...Mahalo and Aloooohaaa Dana
I’m glad I searched on Powers review as it led me to your channel. Excellent review channel. I’ll be checking you out from here on. Thanks for the great vids. From an American Irishman, Grant McNerney… sláinte
I just purchased a bottle of this Whiskey and discovered your channel. Two wonderful discoveries in one day. I've subscribed to your channel and am enjoying your reviews. Cheers from New York. USA.
To any Irish watching this video, Tesco are selling Powers Three Swallows which is a big step up from this, 30 euro a bottle... its single pot still, not blended, very smooth even had my Mrs sipping it tonight and shes not a whiskey drinker.. Powers is decent, Powers Three Swallows is great stuff.. 15.50 off per bottle at the moment.. dont miss out!!
Nice review! I really like Powers Gold Label, hits well over its price, way more tasty than Jameson in my book. Sadly I can only get this version in Sweden where I live, would love to try the 12 year old. Lyckily my sister lives on Ireland though, hoping she can find one for me!
Store clerk introduced me today. Brilliant review! American and in love! Sorry Jameson. Knife is always handy. After two minutes of clawing at the seal. Keep up the great "work"!
Great channel! picked up a bottle of powers today myself and its fast becoming one of my favorites. I'd love to hear you review Kilbeggan whiskey, I also tried the Kilbeggan rye which was great.
I miss the three swallows on the old bottle neck. Also the reason for the gold label was that the whiskey was bottled at the distillery and casks send to vintners would be put in bottles with silver bottle necks but the vintner could dilute the whiskey.this heritage will be lost with the new bottle. But a good solid whiskey not flashy but having low key dignity
Hi John, got my Whiskey Lover this as I liked the bottle!! and he opened it this evening ( well I did, as he tried for nearly ten minutes then passed it across to me). After his initial nose and taste I came looking for reviews to compare and found you. We really have enjoyed your review and have subscribed. Thanks for the history of Powers it was fascinating. Initial tasting he`s getting citrus orange? caramel and black pepper. He is on his 2nd glass and is determined to discover the lemon, spices and mint.. I spotted the Redbreast and will buy it next. Ps the man says to tell you he loves your whiskey shed/ work shed.
This sounds very interesting, I'll have to look for it next I buy whiskey! I love how you're able tell the different smells, I try nosing my whiskeys and I can't make anything out! Salúd
@@thewhiskeyshed.4105 oh okay, I'll just keep trying and hopefully I can start smelling the different notes. I did notice quite a difference in taste after I let it sit for a little while though
Another good video John, I like how you give a quick history lesson on the whisky you drink, nicely informative. For a novice your tasting notes are pretty good👍... I wish I was back home tasting whisky as a novice like yourself instead of here in Germany(more opportunities to learn from the source). I must say I can watch your videos "all day" lad😉
Tried this brand for the first time tonight. It was about $15 more than what Jameson costs where I live. I think it’s probably worth $40 but I wouldn’t want to spend any more The ethanol is there but it’s easier to get past compared to cheaper options in malt whiskey
40% 🤔 mine is 43.2 ncf (which gives much better taste & very rare for supermarkets) on sale at uk tesco & quite regularly on offer for £23 which is an absolute bargin cos this is truly lovely stuff, must be on my 6th bottle now 😉
Hmm mine is 40 tho.. anyone ever did an AB test? Since I found that everyone of my pours tastes quite different. Most dominant one is red apples. There is however always this disinfect acohol smell and harshness I find in the finnish aswell, is this something the 43 also has?
I appreciate the review and love the shed! I’m mostly looking for a budget bottle to use in Irish Coffee. I normally go with a basic Bushmills product but happy to experiment. Thoughts on how this would go with coffee and freshly whipped cream?
You realize what you’re doing here don’t you John... you’re trying to make me go broke! How’s a guy supposed to keep up with you and still make his mortgage payment?! Thanks for the great content! Keep it up.
Just got back from a trip to Dublin. Powers was my favorite Irish whiskey. Brought a bottle home. Great stuff.
Keep one on my shelf, spicy and has a dry finish, perfect sitting beside a pint 👍🏽

Glad you liked it.

Juicy Fruit gum. Loads of it. It’s a very friendly, easy-sipper. Good value.

Just bought myself a bottle. It instantly became among my favorite reasonably priced whiskeys.
Awesome review thank you! I intend to try this very soon. Can’t wait to visit beautiful Ireland and see my family roots at some point before I die.

Love the vid. I'm a straight up Irish Whiskey drinker. Powers is my no.1 'budget' go to. Follwed by Bushmills and then Jamesons.
Love your studio btw. A wonderful place to unwind and take in the surroundings.
It’s very interesting how different people can smell very different flavors. I do not smell lemon or pepper or cloves. I smell and taste a lot of butter, banana bread, and baking spices. Very good whiskey! Definitely a new favorite Irish.
Interesting!
I get some butter too. Lovely whiskey.
I love that toast, and I'm definitely stealing it. As always, this is a great no-nonsense review. Cheers from Michigan

Probably it was the Pot Still whiskey. The Gold Label is a blend.
“A pint and a drop”! I’ll have to remember that if I ever get back to Ireland.

My next buy!
Three swallows looked to be much more expensive (I only find gold label for 30 euro), and I was looking in the Tesco in Cork city so :/
Amazing video. Thanks for the info.
I can't believe how good Powers is for the price. Its now my go to Irish so I can make my Redbreast and Greenspots last.
I like your strategy!
Nice review! I really like Powers Gold Label, hits well over its price, way more tasty than Jameson in my book. Sadly I can only get this version in Sweden where I live, would love to try the 12 year old. Lyckily my sister lives on Ireland though, hoping she can find one for me!
I miss the metal tags on the old bottles 🙂
Thnx for the review and as a Paddy's fan ,will have to try this next ! Have a Happy New Year !
Happy new year!

Cheers Kevin, Powers is great for the price, I thinks it's a bit better than Jameson too!

Thanks very much and welcome along! I have another nice Powers up next!
We noticed the bottle in Tesco's (£23 with club card in England ) and wonderd what it was? Your nice video explains.
Picked up a bottle for £22 in Waitrose last night! Might need to go again.
Must try it , generally I go for Jameson and Bushmills .nice review .🍻
This sounds very interesting, I'll have to look for it next I buy whiskey! I love how you're able tell the different smells, I try nosing my whiskeys and I can't make anything out! Salúd
Some days I'm the same can't smell anything other days can't taste anything and sometimes I get everything.
@@thewhiskeyshed.4105 oh okay, I'll just keep trying and hopefully I can start smelling the different notes. I did notice quite a difference in taste after I let it sit for a little while though
The Power's Gold is 43.2% here in Canada.
What's your thoughts on the tuath whiskey glass
First thing I saw was the hand planes. :)
loved the gold label, REALLY loved the three swallows
Nice work mate
Thanks 👍

I’m ireland, Powers is cheaper
i'v gotta find it in America!
Great review - my favorite Budget Irish! Beats Jamesons all day.
Glad you enjoyed it
instablaster...

Just looked at the bottle on my shelf, mines 43.2 as well (here in the US) can't remember what I paid but that means it was cheap
Hmm mine is 40 tho.. anyone ever did an AB test? Since I found that everyone of my pours tastes quite different. Most dominant one is red apples. There is however always this disinfect acohol smell and harshness I find in the finnish aswell, is this something the 43 also has?
Informative!
on here cos am asking for a bottle of whiskey for chrimbo n doing some research on the best irish one! 😹
A bottle of Rebbreast. Can't go wrong!
I buy Powers Gold Label in the U.S. and it’s bottled at 43.2%. Why the lower ABV in Ireland?
Powers vs Jameson, I’d like to hear from Irish folk on reason why for their choice? And not just on the taste but history behind it.
Powers cause it doesn't taste like rubbing alcohol 🤣
Looks like a regular little bar there John :)
I appreciate the review and love the shed! I’m mostly looking for a budget bottle to use in Irish Coffee. I normally go with a basic Bushmills product but happy to experiment. Thoughts on how this would go with coffee and freshly whipped cream?
Its not bad in an Irish coffee but the best budget Whiskey for Irish coffee is Slane triple cask imo
Too good to waste in coffee. Use a budget Lidl or Aldi Irish Whiskey for that. Any goodness is overpowered by the coffee
Good work
Thank you! Cheers!
The best entry level irish. Bar none. Its a really nice drop too.
Hi John, i notice over the years Powers has become a darker Whiskey in colour, years back it was a much paler Whiskey??..
It is definitely slightly darker I would say they are adding colour
Powers is the best budget whiskey IMO.
Old men know their whiskey.
I gonna try some probably better than jack?
Sure is
A drop would be what we call a shot?
A drop would be a measure of whiskey like a shot I suppose but you wouldn't threat it like as shot and drink it in one go.
You realize what you’re doing here don’t you John... you’re trying to make me go broke! How’s a guy supposed to keep up with you and still make his mortgage payment?! Thanks for the great content! Keep it up.
😂 it can get expensive this whiskey adventure. I'm going to review a lot of budget options!!
I don't care for jamesons. just picked up some powers yesterday
Jameson isn't anywhere close. Powers gold label is underrated.
I like powers has a slightly better kick than Jameson. Not too smooth not too harsh.
❤
It's a shame it's SO artificially-darkened with caramel.
