Dharman clearly doesn't realise how most homophobia is covert. Like it's not a confidence that all my straight girl friends will talk for hours about their attraction to men but swiftly change the topic when I talk about women. Or just forget I am not attracted to men, assume my exes are men, and ask me if I find a man attractive and then get hurt when I'm like "no he's okay", despite knowing I'm a lesbian. I have had overt homophobia directed at me but most of the time it's so subtle I'm left wondering if I'm over reacting. A lot of my coworkers have never met my sibling, and I've only ever used gender neutral pronouns, yet they still manage to misgender them. I've even had them correct me. On my own siblings gender.
I think it's not so much misunderstanding as cynical attention-grabbing. Most English-speaking people are pro-gay rights, but in a fairly superficial way: they know and agree that it's wrong to be explicitly, violently homophobic. So, if you want to appeal to those large audiences, that is the understanding of homophobia that you want to address. Revenge fantasies of loud bigots being put in their place, and sympathy for gay people being rewarded. These videos get tens of millions of views with all the writing and production value of a primary school musical performance, so it clearly works - this is the kind of pro-LGBT story that sells. I think the most believable part of this film was when the recruiter said, "Yeah, so?" I mean, seriously. Outrage over a gay athlete is so 1980s/1990s. Today, a homophobic coach would be the remarkable part and I'd expect such a coach to get reprimanded for his actions. How long ago was this film created. I was going to say that this movie would be more relevant and believable today if the protagonist was trans instead of (or in addition to) gay. But then I realized that would probably only work if the protagonist was a trans woman. Most transphobes don't seem to get all up in arms about trans men in men's sports. Probably because most of them seem to forget that trans men exist altogether.
They really pulled a "there's no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" 😂 I love how little this movie cares about anything: basketball, queerness, characters, plot, pacing... or maybe the movie cares about those things so ineptly that it does a Lenny and squeezes them to death.

the "its ok to be gay as long as you're really good at straight things like sports" got me so good XDDD me and my siblings have grown up in a protestant household to a family of cisgender straight people dating as far back as we know, with blanket-Christianity on my fathers side and Roman Catholic on my mothers side, yet my parents ended up with 3 queer kids :3 none of us were ever into traditional things like sports (except my youngest sibling but they're a lifeguard now) and me and my brother were always into drawing and art, instead of shutting down our interests my parents encouraged and nurtured our passions, and I am forever greatful to them for doing so :3
As a sports gay, I could rant endlessly about the craziness that is a highschool that has two separate basketball teams, but can't afford uniforms for either, and also play a best of 7 series against each other for some sort of championship.
I had jumped the Dhar Mann ship because he did something similar with autism as an NT. Generic "I can" stories are NOT relatable to half the autists out there.
Waitwaitwait, Mr. Mann *actually* called them the Blue Team and the Red Team? Couldn’t even come up with, like, Wildcats and Eagles or something generic like that? God, he’s such a hack.
You can tell how important this game was by how the crowd was tiny and dead silent. And as a Bostonian I really enjoyed the “Boston basketball” green and white tee that was totally not Celtics merch.
I'm going to be in California for Pride this year, so I'm going to look at replacing ALL my towels, with pride flag towels. The beach towels, the gym towels, just all of them. Lol. The variety of Pride merch for good causes must be HUGE down there (or at least bigger than on this dinky little island in Canada).
This Dhar Mann looks and sounds like someone that has been trapped in jinn bottle since the dawn of time and was released by some cursed internet personality who was conned to switch places with him for his three wishes. The way how Calen skips heartbeat every time he starts his monologues is my favorite part. Its like cat sensing black magic in some exorcist movie.
As a Texan, I have a gun license and have it locked away, but I actively protest against having guns. I’m constantly wondering why I’d ever use it, especially if nobody else had guns.
Homophobia in the real world is rarely a passion. It's rare for it to be overtly hateful. Most homophobes still want to think of themselves as good people, and are desperate to tell themselves that their behavior doesn't make them bigots.
"Im Gay"…."I know I saw you on Grindr yesterday, bear87 is me. Let’s go hit the shower so we can talk about the UCLA in detail." Idk why my head came up with this but it did.

The team that sleeps together sweeps together.... wait...
2:38 Okay, why did my dumb straight ass say "Aww!" out loud at the black kid smiling at his jock boyfriend?
Grr, no, I'm supposed to be ANGRY at a supportive, loving relationship between a jock and his love interest cheering him on from the sidelines like in EVERY HIGH SCHOOL THING EVER!
Don’t worry I did too I thought it was so cute ❤
Yeah, I did too. And even did a little head tilt. It was just so freakin' wholesome!
I mean, if someone can watch that and not give a little "aww" then they have no love in their heart, no life in their spirit, no goo in their soul
(I think the metaphor got away from me at the end there)
@@JamesJoy-yc8vs Matt Walsh has a soul goo deficiency for sure
fruit can’t hoop?
That's why they're loops.
I saw a comment that said Dharmann has never experienced homophobia.
I'd like to not only agree with that statement, but add that he has never experienced living in the real world. How are his "films," familiar yet so incorrect? It's consistent too, and that's what scares me.
Does he go outside? Can he pass human verification tests? Are we all experiencing a mass hallucination imagining Dharmann to be real?
He's like the cure for the Turing Test
Wait I've figured out the lore, the homophobic chef is the coach's father and Ellen is the coach's son, generational trauma.
I would *definitely* watch that spin-off!
And I want Caelan to write the theme song!
[edited because spell check turned Caelan into Carlin]
Dhar’s slow narration making the game sound boring asf 😭😭😭😭😭 I’m CRYING
I was singing along
("dirge-ing" along?)
That was my favourite part. It’s like he was narrating The Road.
“The game was so intense 😐”
I love the sexism of acting like being a cheerleader is only for women, gays, and etc. I also love the disrespect towards the hard work they do
10:13 Why were they all watching the game behind a chain link fence like it's an illegal underground cage fight???😭💀
Seriously, I was wondering if the game took place in the bar from roadhouse
Ah yes, high school sports, where you can switch teams quite easily because it doesn't matter which high school you go to.
PraegerU lobotomy might officially be a worse fate than what the Kennedys did to Rosemary.
The Brain Worms of Cosmic Comeuppance have struck - apparently Shark Mann as well as the Kennedys.
That coach has like aggressive gay magnetism; everytime a gay person or word enters within a 15-feet radius, he just angrily zooms right to it.

What does that mean 😥

I got the rainbow towel! 🏳️🌈
...Why'd the kid bring his own towel to school sportsball? They do provide those, I'm pretty sure. Now I'm not, actually. And Caelan ̿ (hi= c/o autocorrect) brought the rainbow, uh let's say "c'mere" towel.
"C'mere" cos it's ME, Ellen Degeneres, famed Dhar Mann homophobe who hates Gay Pete! Right, fellow kids? Oo, why I oughta! I'm off to box a kangaroo! (Where's the "kangaroo wearing boxing gloves" emoji? Ugh probably with the war emoji, wherever _that_ ended up.)

“I’m not gonna let you dribble balls anymore if you’re gay.”
“Gays aren’t allowed to dribble my balls here.”

Dhar Mann reminds me alot of my own dad, only he doesn't make any monetary gain from me being fruity so all he gets is a free card to make bottom jokes.
Dads love it when they can make their kids the butt of a joke. Especially if the joke is ass.

My favorite Star Trek The Next Generation episode was when Data pretended to be a homophobic basketball coach on the Holodeck.
How about "Fruit loop don't shoot hoop."?
You are literally my favorite person. please review more movies with gramps
I second everything in this comment!
IKR, like so material girl 💅
You gotta give dhar Mann credit for turning arguments he had with people in his head in the shower into a career of auteur filmmaking
Basketball, gay?? No way 🤓
That sounds like a tagline for ‘High School Musical’

Hey kids, remember that just because your a bottom, that doesn’t mean you can’t be on top
YESS
They really pulled a "there's no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" 😂
I love how little this movie cares about anything: basketball, queerness, characters, plot, pacing... or maybe the movie cares about those things so ineptly that it does a Lenny and squeezes them to death.
"Your favorite alleyway in Essex"
"You've never beaten me" he says in game 6 of the finals implying he's beaten him at least thrice
There's no rule against playing for the other team, just like there's no rule against a dog playing basketball. (Come on, someone had had to say it.)
Unless the dog is gay
@@JamesJoy-yc8vs - Most dogs are gay. Systematic issue trying to keep dogs out of basketball, I think.
That "Don't mind the lumps; they're cameras" line had me rolling.

I remember when me and my friend were watching dhar mann and I decided to say "Wouldn't it be cool if dhar mann made a video about homophobia?"
OH BABY WAS I WRONG
You jinxed and cursed us into this/lhj
when dhar mann was narrating i put the video in x2 speed and he sounded almost normal, but then when i put it back to normal it geninuely sounded like he was in x0.5 speed
what kills me more than the kindest homophobia I've ever seen is the lack of creativity
also posting this one when theres 696 comments so NICE
the "its ok to be gay as long as you're really good at straight things like sports" got me so good XDDD
me and my siblings have grown up in a protestant household to a family of cisgender straight people dating as far back as we know, with blanket-Christianity on my fathers side and Roman Catholic on my mothers side, yet my parents ended up with 3 queer kids :3
none of us were ever into traditional things like sports (except my youngest sibling but they're a lifeguard now) and me and my brother were always into drawing and art, instead of shutting down our interests my parents encouraged and nurtured our passions, and I am forever greatful to them for doing so :3
I can't wait! You're the best ❤
As a sports gay, I could rant endlessly about the craziness that is a highschool that has two separate basketball teams, but can't afford uniforms for either, and also play a best of 7 series against each other for some sort of championship.
I think his boyfriend might secretly be Nightcrawler. He appears and disappears without any discernable locomotion.
“vulnerable 34-yr-old high school students” 😆
how many Oscars did this win? pure pain.
It's actually so funny that when he came out he "started playing for the other team".
Yay!! Another review from you to light up my day ❤❤❤
I had jumped the Dhar Mann ship because he did something similar with autism as an NT. Generic "I can" stories are NOT relatable to half the autists out there.
The jumpscare from Yousea Elae and then the nametag have my crying 😭😭 you make these awful short films so fun to watch
"This basket's for balls, not fruit" 😡
"You can use whatever towel you like." Well, that sounded suggestive. Better watch out, Liam.
🏅 the grade 8 vibes continue.

"we've never lost to them before" - half time speech of GAME SEVEN.
Thats perfect timing on my part. Woot!
As a Texan, I have a gun license and have it locked away, but I actively protest against having guns. I’m constantly wondering why I’d ever use it, especially if nobody else had guns.
What can I say, I think „Gay cannot play“ is a classic.
2gay 4balls
Why does he only show up at the very last minute with no explanation? You’d think the recruiter would be more concerned about that
As we all know, UCLA, famously doesn’t allow gay students to attend.
15:47 Yousea Elae sounds like something you'd name a witness in an Ace Attorney case where the murder victim is a college administrator.
Homophobia in the real world is rarely a passion. It's rare for it to be overtly hateful. Most homophobes still want to think of themselves as good people, and are desperate to tell themselves that their behavior doesn't make them bigots.

The sexual tension between the coach and star boy is palpable
I think he's jealous that the boy is able to live his life more freely than him :)

So I'm like 5 minutes into the vid and the movie ended like 3 times already!
1) coach is bigoted after the game. Protag tells principal. Coach is fired. Roll credits.
2) coach is bigoted in locker room. Other players know what discrimination is and report this shit. Coach fired. Roll credits.
3) coach is bigoted in the locker room. Players know what discrimination is. Players refuse to play in solidarity. Coach is fired. Roll credits.
4) Coach fires star player the night before big game, for something that has nothing to do with his ability to play and is nobody’s business. BTHS Alums are furious. Coach is fired. Roll credits.
Casual homophobia (which is rampant) thwarts these potential endings
