- New watch day is always exciting, but even more so when it is a new release from my personal favorite brand- Seiko. I know the watch will have it's haters... but that won't ever be me. Well done Seiko!

The hate these get makes no sense at all. (1) Everyone who liked the SKX already owns it, or several. (2) Most people complaining about this have an SKX that they've modded the heck out of, for much more than the retail price of this. (3) Most people complaining about it for not being a diver's watch either don't dive, or if they do, they own plenty of dive watches. (4) A gazillion SKX's are still available. Want one? Buy one.
You are so right! I am pinning this. Not to mention you could totally recreationally scuba dive with it anyways despite it not being iso compliant. Most wont get close to the 30m limit recommended by PADI

OK, you like the Seiko 5s, but just stop calling these watches “SKX replacements”. They are absolutely NOT, in any way, upgraded models of the SKXs. You have to look at various Prospex models to find those. Seiko 5 are more of a fashion watch, pure and simple.
In a few years we're all going to look back and see that this was a great decision by Seiko. And I really like what you did with the strap change, goes perfectly with the design of the watch!
I like it, Seiko understands the Modding community, and is taking advantage of that new audience they curated.
Besides, I dont dive, 100 is more than enough for me, and I believe its the same case for many of us too.
Loved this new line up since their release! I’ve got the green one that looks really amazing!

I think Seiko are on a winner with the 5KX. They have opened the door for new-to-automatics watch enthusiasts that could never be reached with the old SKX.
I was skeptic as well when I first saw them. At the end of the day Seiko does tons of divers if that’s what you want. The SKX is an old, outdated 25 year old watch that’s had a good run. Love the diversity in variations of these SK5’s. I think Seiko is really smart with what they did. These SK5’s are going to be popular for modders (who have a ton of parts that will fit these watches from the SKX) and they’ll also be great first watches for those new to the watch hobby or those wanting to get into a decent automatic watch. The 100m water resistance and push pull crown should be plenty for all the desk divers out there anyhow!
Great short 1st impression vid, Bruce! If I´d buy a new Seiko 5 model, I´d buy the this black one too! But I´m saving my money for some more expensive Seiko watch ;-) Beside that: I adore my SKX 007, can´t think of replacing it.

So, an auto movement that hacks and winds, more than sufficient water resistance for the vast majority of recreational divers, typically rugged Seiko design and a still very reasonable price tag. These new 5’s will fly off the shelves, regardless of whether or not they’re actually intended as replacements for the SKX.
Another great video. Love the strap from Uncle Seiko, matches perfectly. And to the people who want to complain about 100m WR. Be true to yourself, how many people go diving to 200m with an SKX?

Love my new 5 sports and the lume is quite good on mine, chapter ring not aligned , definitely no fake, lol, I could have bought a skx for the same money , but it’s quite dry we’re i do my surfing on the sofa ,, love hacking and hand wind , I’m afraid it ticks all my boxes , and plenty of colour S to choose , and a display back so you can see it’s little heart beat,, love it nout bad to say cheers shane uk 🇬🇧

Bruce I’m glad you bought the New Seiko 5s! I recently purchased the Stealth Blue and it’s my everyday work watch in the kitchen. Something about the PVD coating from Seiko makes this watch durable. I’m not very gentle with it especially when it’s over heat, cold water and constant movement. It’s had a couple dings here and there but never has the coating come off. I’m running about +5 seconds a day, which is phenomenal. At first I hesitated about the OEM NATO from Seiko but it’s comfortable and taking a beating everyday. You should check out the Seiko 5 Sport Red/ Burgundy with the gold hands and indices, I picked one up for my dad it’s stunning. We changed out the mesh bracelet and added the Strapcode Julibee steel and gold. It’s classy and it’s 49ers colors love it! That could be your new 49ers watch to celebrate our 8-0 record! Poo Poo. I say nay! Lol, these will be a hit for Seiko. They will flood every retail location with these and every hipster from San Fran to NYC will be eating them up. A model for every plaid shirt and man bun. There main positive is all the different styles which will be available.

My main complaint is I’m hearing that they are more expensive with less features they really could have at least done a screw down crown.
About the same price... nicer features except for a screw in crown. I'll touch on that in my review and compare it to an SKX

To me, its not a replacement for the SKX This watch isn't in the same league as an SKX. Let this sink in: this watch, has more in common with a Presage line than it does with a Prospex line. It's not designed to be functional. It's designed to look pretty. And it looks pretty.
And, if you can get over the fact that the watch is not a tool watch, nor is it designed to take any kind of daily punishment like the SKX was (and modern Prospex are), then I think it will suit you as a great fashion timepiece.
There is no situation in which someone can factually argue that this is a replacement, because the category of watch, considering its internals and features, doesn't even allow for a comparison.
It just happens to look the same, and people will say, naturally, that it's a replacement. Which it isn't. Replacement can only exist in the Prospex line, since you can't replace a tool watch with a watch that's not a tool watch.
P A and then a I will buy an NH36 SII movement for less than 40 USD and then load it to my SKX case and Now whats the difference?..
Still no sapphire ! No excuse in 2019. ALL microbrands offer sapphire at that price range. And how many of you ever shattered a sapphire vs scratched every Seiko Hardlex you own ?
I will buy Seiko again when they built their watches with sapphire....
So disappointing. Had about 500-1000 euros to drop on a watch, didn't go for Seiko because of it.
The one and only thing I don't like is that this piece fails in what it's meant to be for. Telling the bloody time😂it's sooo dark. The watch and this new line overall is absolutely amazing!

I am glad you brought up the cheap Nato strap. I have been looking for a stealth style watch. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the one. A friend of mine just picked up a very nice one from Davosa and it is awesome. Of course it is priced more than the Seiko.
The most +be review of the 5 I’ve seen. Good for you. Looks fab, and that strap, Wow. Pity you can’t see the time. Really does look premium.

If Seiko would have just upgraded the SKX (which is what everyone wanted anyways) it would have been about the same price as the new Seiko 5s.
I don’t understand the argument that the SKX was outdated. Just look around the watch world and there are hundreds of watch models that are much older than the SKX that are still being produced with only minor updates to movements (too many examples to mention) . All the SKX needed was a sapphire and movement upgrade.
There is nothing wrong with the new Seiko 5s, the problem is Seiko’s treatment of the beloved SKX. This feels like Seiko giving the middle finger to enthusiasts and trying to please the average “non watch” person. It is what it is. I have an SKX 013 and I’m happy with that.
Mr Williams, could you swap the original Seiko matching brand hardware for putting on the Uncle Seiko so it's fully blacked out? I think that would be a cool look. Edit: Unless the hardware is the wrong size. :/

Hey swimming pool "divers" push pull crown is fine for holding your beer and a couple 7 foot dives. Love these new 5KX.

Very few people use a watch for diving now. A little pricey for what you're getting, but these do look really nice.
I had never heard of Uncle Seiko. Now I know and will have a look at what is offered. By the way, I think the new strap looks awesome on this Seiko 5. A nice looking watch, for sure!
Hehehe. “Seikopath.” I’m running with that name. Seriously tho, people are hurt these aren’t true divers? I’ve got seceral Seiko 5s I take in the water all the time, they’ve never let me down. It’s only a hundred more for an ISO compliant turtle or Samurai, which in my mind is still incredible value. This one looks nice on the Uncle Seiko.

I got the burgundy red one and it's gorgeous.. Have to admit that the stealth is probably the nicest one out of the bunch.
I dont mind the new desings, i think some of them including this blackout one look great. Can`t get over the non screw down crown on this case shape tho. Its just wierd.
I feel like the only time I ever thought about getting an SKX was so I could mod it to make it better. The only thing that Seiko isn't doing here is preserving the water resistance of the screw down crown, and they still have not upgraded to a sapphire crystal. This really isn't such a bad thing. The 5/S logo might not be for everyone. I think this is fine.
I just picked up the new Seamaster 300M black on bracelet and I love it . I want to get a beater and been thinking about one of these I just don't really know which one because they have like a million different similar models. Any suggestions? Thx
I like this, but as a beater I would want one of the non blacked out ones for the good lume

Hey Bruce, great watch love the blacked out edition, I have the green “Hulk” version. However, uncle Seiko supplies fat spring bars but don’t those need curved spring bars to fit!? Because of the drilled lugs, I was wondering if that strap for no problem, as I am interested in ordering that waffle strap as well.

Love the watch and nice video. Ignoring the hate parade is easy. I like the strap but it’s missing the stealth black on the metal bits. Really doesn’t look right with silver. Hoping to find something similar with a perfect match. Cheers

New SK5 are a complete upgrade from the SKX. Everything has been improved. Its nice not having to unscrew crown to wind, def a plus. The only slight downgrade is the missing lume pip, but most people that even notice that will buy an aftermarket insert.
Lets be honest, does lume really matter these days? Everyone is glued to their phone or tablets with the time glowing like a Christmas tree!

Like these new Seiko 5s a lot and just got mine in. Sad to report I've got a quality issue, hour hand is slightly misaligned. Going to get it fixed and keep the watch. I do have an issue with the pricing, are they really worth + $300 or more?

Its the spyderco para 3 with the digicamo scales. Great knife for not a lot of money. Been using it for a couple years now
I got this before the mad mark ups, nice that Mimo’s jewelry hasn’t done that, already modded it with a sapphire crystal, black ceramic bezel and crafter blue strap. Looks really good especially with the black kanji day and date.

Andrew Doster I think its pretty much sold out, don’t know if it was a limited edition but its been sold out for a while everywhere although you can find it on eBay.

I really like it, to be honest I think the SKX screams out to be modded/upgraded due to the poor specs out of the box and Heimdallr have nailed their homage SKX and Turtle. The new 5kx gives people who won't mod the option to have a more personal seiko which is a good thing but 100m? Hardlex?....... Seiko missed a trick here I feel.
However, I dond dive, I look after my watches so the hardlex will stay looking great so I'm totally sold on the stealth 5kx.
You hear so many different opinions on the water resistance of watches. What is the bottom line with a 100m WR watch? Could I go swimming? Could I go snorkeling?

Bruce is right they don't deserve the hate. I just think these are a slight tad overpriced....if they were the same or just slightly more than a mako I'd certainly get one in an unusual colour. I'm sure the price will come down though. Good to see you rocking the fitted uncle Seiko Bruce. I'm sitting here right now with mine on my 007 purely by coincidence (like the 'seikopath' I obviously am)...

This watch with the srpd55 dial for those white indices along with sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel would be 🤯 love that strap. Ima have to get one of those or a crafter blue. Or both. Lol

This an SKX replacement. 1. The design 2. Movement family of 7s26 which is 4r36.
Before this design going out in the market a lot of people out there already buying an NH36 to load on their SKX case. So this make sense to maintain a 200m resist with a new movement.
No two ways about it. That is a great looking watch. They are going to going to sell a ton of those things.

This watch and the new Seiko5 "replacing" the SKX are actually Seiko's move to compete with DW and other fashion watches, or at least it's their try to be appealing to people who are not watch conoisseurs. And it was about time, since Seiko has been missing that market for too long.
Anyways, to me this piece is not replacing the SKX. I think the mini Turtle to be the true heir and successor as an entry level diver (price apart, but it's now clear that Seiko is revolutioning its own price placement).

I have always loved Seiko however the SKX was never my favorite . That said , not a fan of this watch . It seems like Seiko is trying to condition their core customers to accept less and keep forking over the cash.

I’m one of those that falls into the category I’ve been very frustrated with Seiko. These watches are by no means a replacement for the SKX. All they had to do to keep most people happy Is offer these new colours. Put the same movement that they put in this impostor...And keep it a certified diver...All low-cost things and they would’ve been able to charge/up the cost to $300 With no complaints...These new Seiko 5 watches Should cost less than$200...Boooo Seiko....Booooo
We know the SKX is dated and there are far better watches out there, but that's not really the point. The SKX , with all it's faults, will always have that certain something that can't be described. Company's long for something with that history and X factor, and now Seiko are just going to forget about something like that, seems strange to me.

I think your particular model is pretty cool! And you’re right, most people really use a diver watch for timing their lunch break and not their dive. So the whole WR thing doesn’t bug me. Love my 013 but it is super outdated.
The thing I don’t like are there are like a million Seiko 5s that are awesome, but to “revive” the Seiko 5 line as just 25+ SKX knockoffs is a pretty lame cash grab

Why not just take the buckle off the original Seiko strap and replace the Uncle Seiko. It would only take popping it off the spring bar, right?

Yes... skx discontinued, this has better options and upgrades. Defintiely a replacement to me. Unless you count the turtle from a few years ago
