    ...there aren't too many other sounds from modern life that can evoke the same rippling spine chills and horrific gut twisting as those from a failing or failed HDD. *_Especially_* when they occur after a reboot and you realize just how long it has been since your last backup... **shivers**

    Brings back memories. I was the guy who was in charge of a TI 990/12 with two DS80 'platter' drives (only 20Mb each!). I used to change heads on those. The head units were the size of a large soup ladle.

    Very useful video. I had a seagate SSHD drive start clicking on me about 6 months ago, it still worked but I was worried. Luckily it was covered under warranty still. I sent it in to seagate and got a replacement only a couple days later.
    I now have a 2tb WD Green drive that works, but it clicks every 10 seconds pretty much on the dot. Luckily, I replaced it with a 6tb WD Black drive this week. I'm going to reformat that 2tb drive and see if the clicking stops.
    Just found your channel today and subscribed, your videos are very helpful. Thank you for the content.

    • @YotaNinja

      I also did a little googling and found that it's most likely the heads trying to park. This drive is not within warranty anymore unfortunately, but 2tb drives are cheap nowadays.

    I bought 5 of these drives as backup to my RAID. The only time they got used was when I filled the drive from my RAID, then left it to one side for when I ever need to restore my RAID if the RAID ever failed. A year later I needed to recover my RAID and tried to offload all my data from the Seagates. All 5 drives failed like this and Seagate claimed they were all out of warranty. Now I don't buy Seagate ever again. They are the worst manufacturer of hard drives I have ever come across. How they can make drives which don't even last the time it takes to read off all data just once is beyond me. How are they still in business?

    • @scottwhittier5861
      @scottwhittier5861 6 років тому

      I used to be a Seagate fan boy.. I've bought hundreds of their drives over the past 15 years. I would tell everyone that their drives were the only reliable drives available. (Going all the way back to the SCSI days) After buying 7 of these ST3000DM001 drives and having all but 1 fail I will never buy Seagate again. They have permanently lost me as a customer. And their response to the ST3000DM001 debacle has been to sweep it under the rug. Worst company ever. Now I go out of my way to tell everyone to never buy from this company.

    External hard drive users, sometimes switching to another fixed USB port will work. I connected my external HD to an external 4-way port and I had the click of death. I next used a port directly built into the pc and it worked as usual. It seemed that not enough power was flowing into the external port? I noticed I had issues with other equipment using the external add on ports. Though the external drive did work in the fixed USB port, I transferred the files to my PC and will be buying flash drives or a new solid-state external drive. Good luck, everyone.

    Great video ,can you not build yourself a pwm circuit using a relay then set the on/off contacts to short and adjust the frequency of the relay contacts to get around what you need .that way you get 10 20 or 50 short contacts per second .or do you need to hold the short state for a time to work just an idea if you do this procedure regularly.

    I have been reading articles about mechanical hard drives. The Seagate, 3 terabyte hard drives were * FAMOUS * for dying.
    Back in 1992, there was a labor dispute between Seagate and the Thai workers, which started when some fat fingered employee entered the wrong amount on a computer. Pay receipts said employees were entitled to more money than they actually were. Instead of working things out with their employees, the Seagate managers fired 600 people!
    In 2000, Seagate incorporated in The Grand Cayman Islands, a well known tax haven. Even though their headquarters was actually in Scotts Valley, California.

      PC3K UDMA would be a great start man make sure you get Data Extractor with it otherwise its useless for data recovery. HDDGuru is a good place to start, register on their forum and see if you can catch up with concepts. Honestly, you would need to learn as you go, and be prepared for some hard work. PC3000 is not an easy tool by any means. Took me a few years to get really comfy with it

      Can only report the opposite Scenario here. Have 2 Seagate1tb barracuda from 2009 in my pc, both working without sector errors. They are ~13000h. In August 2016 i bought a wd, and it died in October 2016. I sent it to wd, and they sent me another drive back, but this one died one week later. Have bad feelings about wd now, so I'll stick with seagate or toshiba in the Future.

      You always get these arguments; Brand X is the worst, Brand Y has never let me down, I have a bunch that have lasted for years, etc. You have a bunch of people agreeing, followed by people with the opposite experience, where Brand Y has always failed them within months, and they have used a lot of Brand X for years without issues.
      So basically, there is no simple answer; if Brand X or Brand Y was so terrible, they wouldn’t be in business, they all have their issues, and they will all die eventually. Also, particular models may be more prone to failure than others, like WD Green drives and 3Tb Barracudas. I stay clear of both on anecdotal evidence. Moreover, there may be variance in quality from factory to factory, and variance over time. I heard one recovery expert say he’s seeing more drives with dirt inside, for instance. Personally, I have more Seagates than WDs, that’s partly coincidental, as I’ve often gone for what they had in stock at the time. I’ve never had any issues with them, I back them up, but they have all lasted beyond their rated lifecycle, so can’t complain. When I bought external drives, I learnt to avoid the WD Passport after having to recover a family member’s drive, basically because it turns out they have an encryption chip, which encrypts everything regardless of whether you set a password or not. And if the USB to SATA bridge fails, you have to find an exact match with the same encryption chip, or you can’t access the drive. Now I just use raw drives in multi-drive enclosures in raid-1 and backed up via a dock with the backup stored separately. Maybe I’ve been lucky, I haven’t encountered any drives that have failed without running for years.

      Seagate has their own Data Recovery Service. I wonder if they have their own backdoor commands to unlock the drive. I doubt they have to go through the same hack of shorting the terminal read pins which is different for every pcb.

    I tried about 30 or 40 times last week to get the right moment to short one of these, eventually got it :)
    Nice vid man. So, there was no media damage on this drive, patient heads looked OK, so just a bad preamp then? Do you first try disabling heads in ROM, or go straight for the headswap?

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 років тому

      Nick Parsons yeah I think this one took at least 20-30 attempts :) I trust the microscope for inspection of heads. They will reveal if there is any platter damage, and then I decide to clip and cut from ROM if needed. If the head stack looks good I go for the swap. I try not to take a risk on partial recovery via head disabling on these, just to avoid the risk of potential platter damage during the imaging. As you know if he had is filthy, even when disabled, it can and most likely will create some ruckus on that platter side. This case went smooth overall. Specially after head adaptive import

    sometimes it is not necessary to open the case to manually position the needle.. the problem may be in the power supply or in the connectors under the pcb, which oxidizes with time... you probably know that ( as i can see, you have a lot of hdd there on your shelf to be fixed ) let me ask you a question ? don't you worry about dust sitting on top of the disk while they are open ? your environment is far from being perfect for handling this type of device.... On the other hand, I heard that when the drive is spinning, the dust or any particle just goes away. anyway... nice video anyway !!!

      Ive spoken with Adam and explained to him that my drive is in a NAS. I have two 3Tb Segate Barracudas but only one is faulty with the clicking head problem mentioned in this video. He asked if it was Raid 0 or Raid 1 and im sorry but i cant remember. I set it up for maximum capacity with zero redundancy. :/ I know bad choice and im regretting it now. Anyway Adam went on to explain that recovering the data from these drives is very unlikley with a 1 in 10 success ratio. He said its the plater thats the problem and not the heads and that even if you replace the heads due to the problem with the platter it will within a few minutes damage the new heads which is not long enough to recover the 6Tb of data. Also when asked for a quote on a successfull data recovery he said it would be £800 or about $1200 I guess which is not feasable for me in my current financial situation. So what are my options ? How expensive would it be to attempt this myself ? I looked for the Head seperator tool and its crazy money for all it is. As for a PC3000 im expecting it to be horrendously expensive also. What can you suggest for someone interested in the topic of data recover with maybe an interest in making a living out of it from your own personal experiances ? Thanks for your advice and time dude. You rock btw. Cheers from Scotland.

      this is not a DIY job dude, not on this drive. You will just end up killing it completely and killing the donor also. since this is a RAID0 you would to have an image of the failed unit made, that will take some sweating over PC3k

    I’ve got a 2TB Seagate Pipeline HDD, spins up then makes 2 of those exact clicking noises then spins down.
    This happened randomly one day, the previous day it was fine, would it also need a replaced set of heads as in the video?
    It’s only been used for 2 years.
    Thanks for your time

    I have the same drive (ST3000DM001) that began to fail suddenly and now is clicking the same way. It showed a few thousand reallocated sectors and I was attempting to remap them but gave up and now the drive is not detected in the bios. I opened it up and verified the heads were not stuck. I was thinking about ordering a donor drive to swap head assemblies. Will this require terminal work and rechanneling the drive? Not sure if its possible to just swap the assembly only or not? The data is not critical but its worth 50 bucks to me. Great video BTW!

    I have the same drive. I found out these have a high rate of failure. There was even a class action lawsuit (2016). Don't know what happened with that.
    My drive is broken, the data on it is (thankfully) not important. I will never buy any Seagate again. It used to be a reliable brand. :-/

    So this exact model I have was in a external case. I had a power outage and it formatted the harddrive into .RAW format.
    I took the case out and plugged it directly into my computer because via USB would not work.
    I used easeus Data recovery software and was able to get most of the data to appear in the software but at the time I did not have another harddrive to switch it over. Now, the harddrive will never connect/be recognized by the computer. It turns on, spins, and does not make odd sounds. Disk manager doesn't list it, Bios doesn't either, I can not find drivers for this harddrive.
    I can not get the harddrive to connect so I can do recovery. I fear the harddrive is dead dead.
    Do I have to just do what you did in this video and get a exact model harddrive that is healthy and start switching out the parts in hope that it fixes it? Just so I can recovery it all to another harddrive that isn't this god awful product by seagate.
    Thanks if you reply.

      HDD Recovery Services Yes, but it still means the Read-Thingie in there is going really quick. And that is probably not too healthy for the drive.

    • @realcomputerdude100
      @realcomputerdude100 7 років тому

      I don't think it's healthy to call the laser a "read-thingie". Probably just needs a cleaning disc.

      @leberkassemmel 7 років тому

      thecomputerman100 I know. I just couldn't recall the word. And i do not live in a time where it would take 10 seconds to google it.
      I don't really understand what a cleaning disc does. My Dad once used one on his old disc player, and it somehow damaged something, i don't remember what it was, but i know, it no longer works.

      Michi Lo It *supposedly* cleans the laser of dust and debris that could have contaminated it. I've seen it work on some, others not so much.

    I have a same model drive. I can hear that platters spin without clicks but it's not being detected by any computer's BIOS. Do you think it could be a physical issue or a PCB issue? Thank you very much for being so generous and open-handed with your knowledge!

    • @hddrecoveryservices
      @hddrecoveryservices  7 років тому

      if the drive spins and does not click, then 99% it is neither. Most likely something either related to bad sectors, or firmware

    • @magodenik
      @magodenik 7 років тому

      And if it were bad sectors related would it be possible to get it back to life or it'd be a lost cause? Thanks for your response!

    Don't you have to vacuum out the air from a reclosed HD before resealing it? I thought they were made that way and filled with some neutral gas to protect the platters.
