  • In this episode of Al-Kee-Hol, our host Yuka and her friend Cindee meet up with some priests in Kyoto, Japan and get closer to the gods-through drinking. Their first stop is to a Shinto shrine, where they learn about the relationship between booze and the gods and how drinking sake can mean receiving holy power.
    They then do some meditating at a Buddhist temple and discover the secret bar that lies within it. (Do you know that there's temple slang for liquor?) The final stop is Bozu Monk Bar, where a monk serves the ladies drinks and even make them an Old Fashioned. As it turns out, bars and temples aren’t so different after all.

    I think this is the coolest if not one of the coolest things I've seen about Japanese culture. The thought of relaxing in a garden, having a drink with a monk, talking about life and such just puts a big smile on my face. I'm definitely visiting these places in the future

    this was great! I always find it so damn awesome when japanese people explain their life choices, it has such depth and focus. It's nice to know there's a place in this world where searching for specific answers on questions is actually a way of life.

    Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae ("water of life").
    Whisky is an Anglicization of the Scottish Gaelic word uisce / uisge, meaning water.
    This was translated to Scottish Gaelic " uisge beatha " or "water of life" and not "source of life" as our friendly Buddhist bartender thinks.
    Yes, I am a pedantic prick, but facts are facts kids :)

      A very known type of alcohol in Scandinavia is Aquavit (or Akvavit in Swedish) which is directly derived from the latin phrase aqua vitae as well.

    “Monks, drinking intoxicants, if done frequently or habitually, leads to rebirth in hell, rebirth as an animal or as a hungry ghost. At the very least, the result of this evil deed when born as a human being is that one becomes a mad person.” source, www.aimwell.org/intoxicants.html#n1

      I am an American guy, joined the Navy shipped off to Japan in 1998, met a Japanese girl, fell in love. Got married , have 2 kids and we all moved back to America in 2012. Japanese girls are the best, they stay in shape after kids,,so polite and clean. And they are so friggin sexy. At least date a Japanese girl if you can, remember to take off your shoes!!!!

    You can NOT be a Buddhist and drink alcohol, he is breaking his precepts. There is no "unspoken" rule.

    • @user-Void-Star
      @user-Void-Star 7 років тому

      Seedeng Jawn the reason why Buddha ban alcohol to monk is because most of the monk will not able to control it and it will distract learning the teachings so those who can control and can boost Thier mind on teachings it's ok to drink that's why drinking is secret not for open.

    • @johnallardyce4164
