One more fun fact about Valve's Day of Defeat: Source! It was the first game Valve ever did a "Free Weekend" for, and it was considered a massive success because it resulted in higher than expected PHYSICAL sales. Crazy, eh? Join the Discord: discord.gg/Da94N8f
This game didn't forget it by valve in 2012-2015-2016 Era beacuse they try make Day Of Defeat 2 : CSGO Style. But Unfornatly after Start Project after Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Release 3 4 Years Later Day Of Defeat 2 Project its Cancelled By Valve ! :-'(
I was really happy to see active servers for both DoD and DoD:S. Of course, everyone else who plays has like...15 years experience now, so I got insta-rekt by jiggle peeking quickscope snipers.
I still play there are about 5 active servers that are allways full sometimes there is not even place to join, so you have to wait. Nptislagia from 2011
The game that defined my teenage years, both OG and Source. I will always think back and remember the absolutely amazing time I had playing. Thank you, for giving it the recognition it deserves!
I still play with my original clan almost every week. We've been playing DoD since its original release and still love it. We used to do old-school lan-parties but because we've been in lockdown since march, we installed our own server and only play online.
DoD was our go to game at every LAN party There was also another mod called hidden. 1 player was "invisible" (except a shimmery outline) armed with a knife and superhuman strenght and speed, all the other players had different guns and equipment (lasertraps, laserpointer, grenades,...) and tried to kill the hidden creature.
Man I remember playing the beta of DoD till it faded away. you know, when DoD_valley had the tiniest houses and there were swastika flags around, which they later removed. And the damn another one bites the dust easter eggs.
This was a game I adored in my teenage years. Still remember vividly playing it on the first night of its release (mod version) I had school the next day and played all night till 5am. I Played it competitively aswell but that love did not carry over to source for me. The gun I used the most was the Grease I was probably one of if not the best player in the game with it but it didn't get carried over to source so I didn't play it much after that, shame really.
Its a damn shame people forgot this game.. It is one of my favorites of all time. I remember when i bought CS: Source i liked Day of Defeat much more than Counter Strike in the begin. I even made a fragmovie. There is just nothing compared to these games today.
It had linear, specifically designed smaller maps and routes that funneled combat. This was the key difference vs battlefield. It was very fun and engaging because action was constant. Time to kill was very low. Every gun felt OP and that's a good thing. Bolt action german rifle was 1 shot, snipers 1 shot, the rest of them all did high damage as well. A machine gun nest properly defended was a wall you had to break through. The machine gun in general was incredibly powerful when mounted. It encouraged front lines combat and breaking through defenses like that. There was a very specific combat loop they aimed for and achieved. Every gun felt good and had its ideal function, range. Games had a tug of war feel that eventually you would break and then quickly finish off to win.
I was in a clan in the original and also the Source release of Day of Defeat. Definitely some of the best years of my gaming life. Shout out Pantheon and ME109
i didnt even get into day of deafeat till way past its prime, i got it in a bundle with cs 1.6 and decided to try it out still go back to it every few weeks never gets old
Amazing game!!! I spent so many hours engrossed in it. I started at the release on beta 3.0. Zafod in the dark with headphones trying to take the bridge was epic. I loved the dark dirty grittiness of it. Clan matches on the enemy down ladder and battle for Europe campaigns were amazing. Amazing memories. Very sad when the lad that created sturmbot was sadly killed in the tsunami. He was a very talented lad.
I used to play this A LOT back in the day, it was my favorite pc game at the time. I remember always killing bot teammates because I couldn’t comprehend on how to actually play the game since I was 6 lol. Just played it recently and kinda sad to see a lot of servers aren’t active anymore, but they’re still some with a good amount of players to play with!
I find Original DoD to be better than DoD:S. More people still play DoD:S, and is more face paced, which implies a bigger learning curve. It was not made from the slow arduous process that comes from community mod development. >> DoD has a full server or 2 during prime time of the week or day. Meaning there are enough people continually playing to enjoy the game thoroughly (though not in comparison to its 'hey-day'). I do find that DoD is much better balanced. That meaning that you can play with 3 others and full bots, and still get a competitive experience . I really want to encourage people to play the original Day of Defeat. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, if not from the pure charm of the HL1 engine. Fight on.
I really got into Day of Infamy and still hope they will do a sequel (like they did with Sandstorm) BUT the player base has dwindled and there is little support and no updates for it now. Maybe it's time for a reboot?
@@reallycoolthere is still a community that continues to play and actively. Many servers full all day, teams and clans active like the 1st MRB or the 6th Ranger, with realism matches. The game is not in the big newspapers, but there is a silent community that is still very active.
Glad to see someone else remembers DoD and its awesomeness! One of my favourite childhood games, especially of the online play variety. This video is one heck of a hit of nostalgia. Sad to see it perish to time. :(
I started playing this game way back when it was in beta. I played regularly up until 2017 when I got married and then stopped playing after having two kids. I do miss it from time to time. Pretty sure I logged 5,000+ hours over the years 😅 Steam didn’t record hours early on and neither did WON / 1.3, but those of us OG’s recorded our hours on X-Fire 🤓
There was a modern war hl1 mod I played a bit as a kid called Firearms. They (kinda) made a source version but that got abandoned years ago. It's still one of my favorite FPS games to play but sadly it's very buggy and nobody plays it :(
Wow I remember that now, I remember it was somewhat active like 10 plus years ago . There was a hl mod called the specialists that was like a matrix online shooter basically with diving and different movements you could do. Another lost and forgotten game

Allied Assault is another game that gets no love now but I grew up watching my cousin play it and both DOD and DODS, as well as unreal tournament. All these games feel forgotten and it’s sad
I would watch my cousins and brother play this and css and Starcraft when I was young and be amazed of the difference to my old Xbox of the day, and I used to play on their computer and got really into css and eventually got my own pc my brother built me. Yup, it is sad that we did not have more of this. Natural selection have his game with his ridicously small comunity ( the game is great, but is not casual friendly ). I would be more excited for a "DoD:GO" than a hl3.
Wouldn't say it was forgotten, it has a successor in the form of Day of Infamy.. and THAT game is the one you should call forgotten. DoD and DoD Source had pretty high peaks, DoI feels like it was never given a chance at all and barely peaked over 1,000 players.
I still have the CD with the soldier that looks like George W Bush on the front. Last time I played DOD Gold SRC though, there was no VAC, and it was full of cheaters. The thousands of hours I played on this back in 2001 though ! I had to extend my University degree by one year because I played DOD instead of doing my course work !
Tonight there was hundereds maybe a thousand on day of defeat source, there was no one in day of infamy. If you get lucky you can play it but DOI is dead and DOD keeps rocking. Its annoying. I'd give anything for an actual sequel or for more people to play DOI.
There will never be a Day of Defeat 3... I mean... it will be the third installment. There's more demand for a HL3, Portal 3, and even a Dota 3. But if they do I think they're missing out on a competitive market some other games (Day of War, Day of Infamy, and Battalion 1944) attempted but failed to capitalize on. DOD has often wrongfully be compared to CS as the "WWII version", to pay tribute I think they should call it "Day of Defeat: United Offensive".

I missed out on DoD, but got to play Day of Infamy alot unfortunately not many players or Dev support anymore shame
Day of defeat(not DODS)is the best ww2 fps game I’ve ever played, great game!
Wouldn't say it was forgotten, it has a successor in the form of Day of Infamy.. and THAT game is the one you should call forgotten. DoD and DoD Source had pretty high peaks, DoI feels like it was never given a chance at all and barely peaked over 1,000 players.
DoD was so nice to play
DOD was the best!
Source engine is magnificent.
and if it wasn't for this video, i still wouldn't know about this game. i am surprisingly okay with that, but would like to play it if it gets redone
You can pick it up mega cheap on sales, and it's a lot of fun to play even without a remake
i remember vampire slayer
Not forgotten to me...
The Homeguard represent!
You guys run some great servers =)
I still play it and so do many others awesome game!!!
I loved day of defeat!!! Took ages to download on dial up. Haha.
That's Valve for you. Even their flops are genre-defining.
Except for R******* .
Look I still enjoy ricochet
god i miss realism, i might have to host a server again....
Still playing today, since the first day it was released! Best game EVER!
Lets Remember Unreal Tournament!
The original? Sniper rifles on top of Facing Worlds?
@@reallycool Exactly my Friend!
Tonight there was hundereds maybe a thousand on day of defeat source, there was no one in day of infamy. If you get lucky you can play it but DOI is dead and DOD keeps rocking. Its annoying. I'd give anything for an actual sequel or for more people to play DOI.
Love DOI, honestly something about it just feels so much more tense than any other game i've played in the genre.
Day of Defeat Classic way lightyears better than source version.
And yet he talks about Day of Defeat Source instead of Day of Defeat 1.3...
The game it's not a failure. Just got forgotten by Valve like every game that they made it.
Day of infamy was the best dod replacement. I loved it
I play both Day of Defeat: Source and Day of Infamy
Forgotten? Im still playing lol
i didnt play this game although i wanted to, but i play insurgency sandstorm and may buy day of infamy, its a dope ass genre, i love realistic fps
I'd kill for a Half Life DOD VR Mod
I'm hoping they release Source 2 SDK with Alyx. Then we can see DoD2 and DoD VR with the same stroke. Plus maybe a Ricochet update (ha) (but srs tho)
@@reallycool, EXACTLY!!!! I wrote a few mods for DoD Source once upon a time. Would be happy to work on a few for Source 2. :)
Favorite valve games Tf2 Hl2 Dod
This game didn't forget it by valve in 2012-2015-2016 Era beacuse they try make Day Of Defeat 2 : CSGO Style. But Unfornatly after Start Project after Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Release 3 4 Years Later Day Of Defeat 2 Project its Cancelled By Valve ! :-'(
