      Thanks , would also like to say because free weights doesn't give you resistence through a full range of motion do not lock out [rest] when doing compound movements like bench press this then gives you constant tension and great results in building muscle .@@BdDaBOMB

    With so many different theories being purported by different coaches, bodybuilders, muscle mags and supplement companies Arthur Jones decided he would find out what the OPTIMUM method of building muscle mass was, that's not to say there aren't other methods that will help you gain mass, but his was the OPTIMUM, by optimum I mean the maximum muscular growth in the shortest period of time without the use of steroids. He found the answer, but people didn't want to train at that intensity.

    He trained with overall body workouts. HIT was what he brought to bodybuilding and people looking to improve their overall strength. He focused more on isolating muscles with his machines and doing leg presses instead of squats that way you can control the weight in different ways such as negatives as well instead of only lifting the weight.

  • @SluggerJT44
    @SluggerJT44 11 років тому +7

    You should read up on him. He actually tried to change the way physical education was actually done. He had scientific studies done with army football players. Half did only running and half did his HIT routines. The the ones doing HIT routines increased flexibility, their resting heart rate improved, overall strength improved by over 50% and their 2 mile run was 40 sec faster on average than those that only did the running study. The ones doing the running study showed that their flexibility..

  • @SandyRoxMySox
    @SandyRoxMySox 15 років тому +4

    Arthur claimed his machines were better than barbells because they provide rotary-form resistance that is direct throughout the full range of motion and has a variable resistance (making the weight heavier when the muscle is in its stronger positions). That's why they're (apparently) the best. Intensity is another kettle of fish. So is volume. However, so long as the intensity is high, volume would naturally be lower otherwise you're not really training with much intensity.

    The whole point of nautilus is to isolate one joint and one muscle group, ie a nautilus bicep curl isolates the biceps using elbow joint. In theory, this saves the joints and tissue from loading them with weights. Since the path of the exercise is predetermined by the machine, the accident rate decreases. Since the muscles are isolated you can focus on weaker muscles and decrease imbalances.
    The nautilus machines isolate muscles in order to strengthen them.

    @oCO: Jones was hyperbolic,dramatic,confrontational,"black & white" to the point of hostile. His points've been calmed down by successors. Goals:1/Lower chance of injury to virtual zero. 2/ Maintain meaningful resistance through full range of motion. Proper use of Nautilus,MedX,Hammer,Pendulum,SuperSlow,or RenEx machines comes infinitely closer to this goal than free weights. NFL & bodybuilders -do- use machines based on these principles, whether carrying the Nautilus brand or not.

    Idk about this guy. And I have no idea why so many people heap praise upon him. Yes, he had some interesting views in regards to weight training - things we can all learn and apply to our training routines.
    But the guy seemed to be rude and condescending all the time. He also seems to have a very black and white mentality - "my opinion is right, if you disagree, get out of here". I get the school of thought he was trying to push here, but there's ways to do things.
    I don't think it's any surprise he was married and divorced multiple times and many of the people who worked for his company (e.g. Mike Mentzer) ended up leaving.
    I certainly wouldn't want someone like him as a boss let alone work with him.

    I do not know much about American Football as i am not from the US. But first and foremost he will need to develop his general preparedness: a certain size and structural strength is needed to take the beatings, and he will need to be able to move his relatively big body quickly and efficiently. This is not necessarily required to develop the skill of being a lineman, but without these abilities the skill will not matter.

I do not believe in functional training if that is what you think. I believe in strength training as a means of attaining general preparedness and I do not think it will have either positive or negative effect on your level of "skill" in a specific sport. But strength matters in sports, not just skill.

    "explosive training is criminal"--Yes Arthur, that is so obvious to anyone thats ever done any athletic activity in existence. Because sprinting, basketball, football (both kinds), baseball, water sports, biking; none of these things require the athlete to be explosive at all. You of course know this due to the vast number of athletes you trained during your life. Training on a selectorized leg extension was going to make them better than training to be explosive, crystal clear that is.

    My reasoning is simple - those "exercises" are based on the objective of performing them in a said manner - the anatomical becomes secondary, an afterthought so to speak. The idea is to address the body and not the implement or performance (specific) based activity. It may stimulate (key word may) structural improvement, but you are lifting a weight first and foremost in a particular manner.

      As a former athlete, it does wreck havoc on the joints. 99% of all injuries comes from "explosive training." They teach not to twist, turn or torche your body while lifting weights as it will cause injuries. Explosive training is everything they tell you not to do, thus defeating the purpose. Jumping up and down with weights in your hands is what I would refer to as.....(wait for it)....stupid.

    Olympic lifts is not the same as olympic weightlifting. Olympic lifts is a group of movements performed with a barbell whereas olympic weightlifting, as you said is a sport. Key attributes in both athletics and weightlifting is maximal strength, rate of force development and muscle fiber conversion.. Is it not obvious that these two groups will you at least use SOME of the same tools to achieve this?

    He has a better Leverage System and Neuro Muscular Efficiency if you might. So you have a Guy that Lifts Heavy Weights - How does that make him a better offensive lineman in football. There are many things you don't take into consideration and take for granted - you must be formally educated.

    "Functional training," which is at best dysfunctional here in the U.S. Strength is elusive, as it is mired in many of the said chosen sports. I just simply view it as "dosage," which can only be individualized when "prescribed." Back to the Point, the Arthur Jones Video just scratches the surface, as there are many aspects that remain "unearthed." I have a Vast Biographical Archives on Film of this Man. To Start - get the book - Total Fitness the Nautilus Way You have to know the whole story.

    All performed sub-maximally, and only if the subject mastered proper technical execution of the lifts: full depth squats, romanian deadlifts, glute-ham raises, barbell glute-bridges and so on.

    Sure - if you have that type of athlete - then put him position to "learn to use his genetic advantages in rehearsing the said sport" The combines in Football introduce an entry test of benching 225 for as many reps as possible and those that perform the most reps usually fail to make it as a Pro.

    Actually you didn't really expose anything. But you are saying that because of the principle of specificity you should sit down and exercise on a machine with a fixed range of motion. Can you see the logical incontinuity here? That is not really going to help you in anything except sitting and exercising on a machine with a fixed range of motion. The objective of supplemental strength training in sports is not to develope the specific SKILLS of the sport but rather to develop attributes

    Explosive power and endurance is not built in the weight room but on the track.
