  • The no shot shot… Players love it, goalies hate it, but how do you stop it. Let’s break it down.
    Number 1
Is your stick on the ice?
As a goalie some things you can get away with, but there is never a situation where not having your stick on the ice is a good idea.
Regardless if you are trying to go into a slide like I was, whenever you go down, you must always have your stick on the ice covering your five-hole.
    Number 2
Now even with you're sick on the ice, you must only move with the puck. Do not get caught following the player's stick or you might open up holes.
Because I was following the stick and not the puck I completely opened up my 5 hole in an attempt to slide over thinking that he was trying to Deke to my glove side.
    Number 3
So when a player is quickly driving towards the net from either side, an advanced technique you could do is have double coverage by dropping into a half butterfly.
If I dropped my left knee and brought my right leg in tighter, even though my stick was in the air, I would have still been covering my 5-hole
Then if the player decided to deke, I would already be in the right position to do a power slide to my left while sealing the bottom of the net.
Now the no shot shot is tricky but it is nowhere near as hard to stop as a screen, so if you want to know how to stop pucks you can’t see, be sure to watch this video right here. • How To Stop Shots Thro...

Great video. That "shot" gets me all the time. That's awesome advice. I never thought about that. Also, I can't believe what happened at the end!

Just to add, I like to use my momentum in situation when a player is approaching from the side similar to this. I like to get a decent push early to be able to get into the butterfly early and shut everything down low off. I think sort of like what you touched on with following the puck, is not committing too hard to one move or another. If the positioning is decent the chances of stopping anything are higher than when you're out of position.

these drive me crazy I find that I always keep my stick on the ice to avoid them and it helps keep the poke check option alive.

I normally fake like I’m gonna poke check or fake like I’m gonna come forward a bit and it usually confuses them enough to where they can’t really finish their shot

You're also not square to the puck and you plant your feet too soon.
