I played pro (lowest tier possible, $300/week, travel by bus, strip joints, $ for room & board) and beer league has an advantage. You’re just playing for fun, with your friends and then having a beer. Any tier of pro hockey there’s the pressure and instability of coach getting fired and new guy bringing in his own guys which means likely you’re getting cut. If you’re in the ECHL, you might get called up to the A for a few games and when u ask what you need to do to stay there, even if you posted shutouts (if u even got on the ice), you’ll hear, it’s like winning the lottery, and it is true. Don’t even worry about the show, I’m talking sticking around the AHL is a near impossibility even if you outplay the guys there because there’s other factors, contracts; investment in draft picks…so you can even maybe make it then get cut the next year to make room for a prospect.
Does this league have beers, before, during, and after each game? That's the league Blashill really needs to be in, he sees Red Wing game so differently then anyone else.
West Australian hockey freak here, that was the funniest UA-cam vid I've seen in ages. Love your work, good on you for teaching him what's cooler. That was very generous of you. 👍
This was so much fun to watch. I think Kaz is leaving the training session a better goalie. KVG is bang on though....two pad stackers looks way cooler. lol
I was at a beer league tournament this weekend and one of the goalies was the back up emergency goalie for the krakens and he was insanely good one time he went full splits and slid across the crease and caught the puck in his glove it was insane
Stopped playing after High School. Got lucky to win a state championship my senior year. Honestly, this content has been making me really consider buying some gear and playing in the local Beer and Pretzel League. Keep it up.
The skill level different in hockey is insane. It's sooo difficult to be in the AHL/NHL. Insanely skilled sport. I bet the Beer League goalie is in a decent league too.
Not really you could put another 40 teams in the nhl with boys from Canada that never had the opportunity to be scouted. The amount of politics in the minor hockey and AAA is unreal.
This is sports/competitive events in general. Look at the NFL, where kids in the NCAA can run train, but as soon as they're in the NFL, they're just trying to keep their head above water. Same with the MLB and the minors, the NBA, any professional soccer league... The jump from semi-pro to pro is really quite insane.
I’m from Tennessee and have always wanted to be a goalie. My parents never had the money for me to try hockey but my brother who passed away played. He’s the reason I watch so much hockey and want to try it out. I always remember when I was very little going to a game or two of his and loved it ever since. Love this vids btw man keep it up.

Played a little deck hockey in gym and street as a kid, count it on one hand(semi-jock in sports). Moved to Florida from Pennsylvania ( near Philly) at 18. Many years later friends who were Solar Bears fans got me hooked😁 in hockey. They were teaching me to be a forward but choose goalie because I can't skate well .I was mistaken for Alan Bester( Solar Bears G) at a fair😁I didn't start league hockey (roller) until 27. Two years later went to ice and never looked back. 12 years of playing and about 4-5 championship wins mostly C league. B league( new team) we went undefeated ( tie).I was the weakest link( great players in front of me) but maybe hockey was my hidden talent with no training but fast reflexes? I was identified as playing like Dominik Hasek( I had more flop😁) but I'm only 5'7". Hockey is the greatest ( watch) sport I have ever played(decent at football) and you should go for it😉👍
join some facebook groups man, you'd be surprised the amount of used stuff people will gladly give you. Especially if you're new man. I will say being in tennessee doesn't help too much though depending on where you are.
Get skates first and go public skating first. Once you have your legs under you, reach out to your local adult league and see if anyone could spot you some equipment short-term to see if you enjoy the game.
Yeah, everyone goes nuts for a good pad stack, I've used then just because the attackers won't expect it, throws them off their game a little when used properly
It's a desperation move that takes usually puts you out of position for at least a few seconds of the play. Also not seeing how it "throws them off" any more than squaring up to the shooter as best you can to make the save in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I've used it, and them immediately realized how lucky I got if I made the save.
Fun video... played in that rink for Armed Forces Tourney this past Memorial Day weekend. That rink has real nice ice. It was a blast being there. Family Sports is still where it's at in Colorado though.... go Avs. 😉
Played one year of bottom division adult hockey goalie and was terrible. The highlight of my time in net was just saying "Oh what the fuck" one time and coming across the crease in a classic 2 pad stack, Hasek style desperation when a pass went to a guy point blank in the slot. Came up with the save and heard a gasp from the benches on both sides. Best decision I ever made. At the end of the season I promptly sold all of my equipment because I'm not cut out to be a goaltender but I will always have that come across 2 pad stack save moment to take to the grave. Hahaha!
Sick set up! I’m also full right, and it’s hard to find quality used equipment. Any suggestions? I’m also rocking 32”, so there’s that too… Keep stacking those pads - it’s a lost art!
Hey I know im late sending a message after this long but I payed a tournament last year at the ford center. I also play 14U A1 for Ice Hawks Southern Il.
If you 2 pad stack into the post properly it knocks the net off and you get the whistle. Way less risky than having to cover the puck or making unnecessary rebound saves
Not to knock on KVG, but the skill level difference between beer league and AHL goalie is pretty large. And yet there's another skill level difference between AHL and NHL starter...and then elite NHL goalie. Takes so much skill to get into the pros, damn
Kane Van Gate, I've noticed that there aren't many training and/or demo videos with full right goalies in them. I'm an ice and ball hockey goalie who has recently switched to full right, and I'd love to master the VH and RVH. Are there any good resources that show a full right goalie doing those post integration techniques. If not, I'd love to see you make one. Thanks!
I looked there, but all the goalies in the pics are regular. If there were videos by Mike McKenna, Pavel Francouz, Tomaš Vokoun, or another full right goalie, I would gladly watch those. It was cool to see you doing an RVH with the blocker on the left post. Maybe you and Trav4oilers can do a collaborative video on this topic? For me, the most difficult part with the RVH is getting into the position. For the VH, I can either butterfly slide into the post and pick up the leg that is against the post or drop down from a standing position (that is what I usually do). How do you go from a regular position into the RVH?
Thanks for taking me under your wing KVG!
Any time! btw, I'm loving the Life In The SHL vids

Beer league goalies. The unsung heros of Canadian Sundays.
not just Canadian, without the goalies we have no game. or not a game that is as fun.
That goalie sniping top cheese with a goalie stick is pretty impressive
They use those sticks all the time I'm sure with practice we could do the same 🙌🙌
@@mtmcommunity once you kinda get used to it you can send pucks
