But in 10 years, she’ll go back to being a nurse on the Enterprise, looking for a missing fiancé who’s replaced with her with a younger, attractive android, while also becoming an android himself. And if that weren’t painful enough, she’ll have to work alongside an ex-boyfriend she’s still in love with but who no longer wants her. Eventually, she’ll become a doctor and be assigned to the Enterprise, only to be pushed aside when the previous CMO returns. “The possibilities are endless.” Indeed. They just aren’t all good.

    This was such a crazy, joyful episode, and "I'm Ready" was my favorite number. I'm sure there are old-school Star Trek purists who harumphed from start to finish, but I love that this show isn't afraid to take a chance. (The same goes for the Lower Decks crossover.) As far as I'm concerned, the only thing wrong with Strange New Worlds is that it only has ten episodes per season, so now we'll have to wait a year (and probably longer, thanks to the strike) to see more.

    • @seriouslyrelax
      @seriouslyrelax 11 місяців тому +10

      I was harumphed by the rebooted JJ verse movies for being dumb, depressing, or usually both. And words are insufficient to describe what a trainwreck Discovery has been. This show however, plus Picard (Season 3 only!), feels like the first decent Trek we have gotten in nearly 20 years. I would consider myself a Trek purist, but this I think was done well and captures the spirit of Trek while trying something new. I totally appreciate that.

    Ouch for Spock. My GF's favorite character was Chapel till this song, at which point she was hoping an air lock failed with her in it. In her mind the entire Spock/Chapel relationship was Chapel's idea and pushed by her and now just being brushed aside in a juvenile way. Spock was obviously invested in the relationship and trying his best to make it work (including trying to show more emotions) only to be the last one told of her fellowship acceptance and this song thrown at him for a 3 month time she would be away from the ship. Getting broken up via song where your ex says she loves the freedom of it has gotta hurt.

    Maybe I'm missing something here but we are only talking about her leaving for a three month fellowship. What's the big deal? At this point there is not the slightest hint of the future romance between her and Corby. There is currently no reason for Spock's heightened emotional response. M'Benga said, "What will we do without you for three months?" implying she is expected back.

      I think the reason for concern on his part is that the news came in and and she chose not to tell him. He only found out after half the crew was celebrating. And when he confronts her the only response is "Can we talk about this later?" Clearly, he was more invested in this relationship, then her, and it hurts.

      She already knows from the Lower Decks crossover that in the Spock has to be unemotional to accomplish all the great things that it is his destiny to fulfill. Boimler doesn't know who she is, the future history doesn't remember her as part of Spock's life. That means their relationship is doomed. It took multiple episodes but she is ready to move on, for the sake of the future.

    This is a very sad scene. But Spock is partly to blame for it. He didn't do enought to reassure Chapel when Boimler revealed too much about how Spock behaved (never smiling or showing any emotion) and how that made Spock the "key to intergalactic peace" in Boimler's timeline. Chapel was unnerved by it, and really needed reassurance from Spock that he wasn't leaving her and would remain true to her in their timeline. Spock dropped the ball (maybe because of inexperience). Even so...

      Seeing this with some space from the episode, and thus mostly out of context. Chapel's "I'm Ready" seems to take on a more suggestive tone with regards to Spock. Chapel is horny for Spock, but the unspoken element is that Spock hasn't made a move and is placing himself in the "friend zone". Spock is trying to be a Vulcan, and bottling up his emotions until they grow stronger. This is why in Spock's number, it is Spock who is the "X", and not Chapel.
      What difference does it make if it was an oversight, or if Chapel intentionally didn't tell Spock? It is a difference of one or two degrees in temperature. Regardless, their relationship at this stage is not strong enough to hold on to over more practical concerns like a career. It is being "nipped in the bud". At best Chapel is replying "now or never", but the "now" was so weak, that Spock only heard "never".

Now we have to wait until 2024-2025 to see what happens with the gorn (thanks for making it a 2-parter...so dumb considering each episode was to be "treated as it's own movie"). Great episode, but you can't do a 90s star trek show today without giving us closure. Actors in the 90s ran on cocaine so they could put out the content we needed, not 10 episodes... Love the show, just needs a change in length for this format to work really well.
