      Toyota is the largest single shareholder of Subaru. I think it's fair to consider a GR86 as much a Toyota product as a Subaru product when you consider how much influence Toyota has on the company. I'll 100% give you the Supra, that thing drives like a BMW to me. For good and for bad.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 6 місяців тому +23

      @@hamsterbrigade Being a large shareholder does not mean you control a company. It's a Subaru based chassis, a Subaru engine, Subaru interior, it's produced at the Subaru Gunma plant, and essentially every part on the car is stamped Subaru. Toyota had input on development and provided direct injection tech. The Supra is practically more Toyota than the 86 because at least Toyota fully designed the exterior and it has a lot more bespoke parts. If you ever work on a BRZ/86 and have experience working on Subaru and Toyota, you'll instantly know it's about 95% Subaru.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 6 місяців тому +4

      @@MaddNomad1015 Because most people have never touched an 86 or done any research before expressing an opinion. Neither the 86 nor the Supra are made by Toyota. One is made in a Subaru plant and one is made in Austria. In terms of actual parts shared with other cars in the corporate lineup, the 86 probably wins by a handful. All I was saying is at least Toyota fully did the body design of the Supra and it is bespoke to that car. That's not even the case with the 86. They made four wheel drive Corollas before with the All-Trac models, so it's still within heritage really.

    With the economy uncertain, not buying a car right now makes sense for a few reasons.
    Firstly, cars are costly, and in uncertain times, it's crucial to save money and keep your finances stable. Using public transport or rideshares can save you money.
    Secondly, technology and car-sharing options offer convenient transport without the expenses of owning a car, like maintenance and insurance.
    Moreover, fewer cars mean lower emissions, contributing to a greener planet. Choosing eco-friendly options supports global efforts to fight climate change.
    Lastly, waiting lets you assess your finances when things stabilize. You can focus on saving, investing, or other essential needs like education or debts.
    Being patient and evaluating your needs can lead to a wise and financially responsible decision about getting a car.

The suspension is damn good for a street car and handle a lot like a stock E46 M3 competition coupe. In track mode the AWD allowed the car to rotate in high speed corners. We didnt run into any heat related issues but air temps were 70's. As an occasional track day and street car the GR corolla is pretty fantastic. For anyone who might read this and are using the Tuxmats, they’re great but I would try and avoid using the mounting clips they come with. I’ve noticed they scuff up the plastic trim you mount the clips to over time since the mats tend to slide back and forth when someone’s feet are on them.

    Rear clutch heat issues are a known issue from GR Yarris. Header wrap or heat shield on the exhaust from resonator to muffer resolves most of the Yarris. Seems like alot of the issues are due to the position of the clutch temp sensor being close to the exhaust so gives false readings. If you need to go further than than Cusco has a clutch cover with expanded capacity too.

    Great video as always! I also ran into the issue of my GRC calling the emergency call center multiple times when I was tracking at Laguna Seca. I'm surprised none of three people that I was connected with mentioned about disabling the feature as it was super annoying. Now I know I can disable it but apparently, disabling it will also disable all the related features to the subscription service, which includes Toyota app and I kind of want to keep it...
    As for the rear diff (clutch pack) overheating issue, I titanium wrapped and added a heatshield on my exhaust near the unit and I even added a furnace shield on the temp sensor and the issue seems to be fixed so far. When ran stock, my GRC went into FWD only mode after three laps in 73f weather, but after adding those heat shields, I never had any overheating issues completing a full session even in 77+f weather. It can still happen in hotter weather but for now that's all I can do.
    I love my GRC but it definitely needs some mods to be driven hard and reliably on the track whereas my Elantra N has been great without any issues even after 10+ track days.

      I've got a Type R and Yaris.
      Type R is stock, the Yaris has some mods - Exhaust, downpipe, springs.
      Type R is pretty much one league above when talking about how much car you get, but the gr is no less fun.
      In rain and slippery conditions in general the Yaris is more fun, much faster too.
      Type R is more mature, much better interior, ergonomics, electronics, more space.
      Yaris has a bigger punch from below, Type R pulls more like an NA engine and is more fun to rev out.
      Yaris feels lighter, Type R handles better, has better steering too.
      Seating position, ergonomics, adjustability, trunk space all go to the Honda.
      Overall VERY different feeling cars both fun in their own right.
      Altho the Corolla seems like a fusion of both, combining the Type R's practicality with the Yaris' drivetrain I don't think I could swap my Type R for a Corolla.
      These are my first japanese sportscars btw I always owned german cars, still have a GT4 to compliment the Yaris and Type R.
      Type R feels/drives like a budget FWD GT3, great to have fun, drive fast/hard but also lots of creature comforts for daily driving and travelling with the family and very light for a modern car of that size.
      More of a general impression than purely track related like you asked but hopefully still gives you some insight from someone who owns (and likes) both.
      Purely track related, the Type R gives more fun at the limit than the GR IMO, making the GR more fun when not pushing too hard.

    Great video as always! To my knowledge there are 3 ways to deal with the clutch pack problem that have been tested on the GR Yaris. The first one is to cover the rear exhaust with some insulating material, reason being that the exhaust goes pretty close to the clutch pack and heats it. The second way is to put a diffuser to direct air on the clutch pack (is on sale at TEGIWA Europe I believe).

    • @vittorio_nichetti
      @vittorio_nichetti 6 місяців тому +10

      And the third one is to put an oil cooler for the rear differential (sold by HEL performance), which does not share the same oil of the clutch pack but since it is close to it transfer a lot of heat to the clutch pack.

    Awesome Job!
    As much as I do love the GR Corolla this video gives insight into what to expect from real-life ownership and I have decided that the cons just outweigh the pros on it at least for now.
    Toyota has some work to do to make this car worthy of a GR badge.

      Honestly as much as look into offerings in this class the EN rises to the top every time. FWD only is a disappointment in basically anything other than clear weather, but the EN is extremely impressive overall.

    I recently picked up a 2023 Core with all options (performance, cold climate, and JBL speakers) with a slight mark-up; I paid slightly more than $42k. In my opinion, the Circuit Edition wasn’t worth the extra $5k-ish compared with a maxed out Core at MSRP. I prefer the matte plastic over the glossy exterior trim pieces and was indifferent to the hood and roof that the CE offered. Unfortunately, in SoCal where I live, it was very difficult to get a Core at or near MSRP. There were very few Circuit Editions available but those models were pushing $50k+ with markups.
    I was cross shopping with a new Type R but, unfortunately, I was not able to find any that were under $50k. Also, I'm not a fan of red interior though it's not really a deal breaker.
    Some dealerships were sneaky because they would tell me “we only sell at MSRP” but then charge $5k - $8k in “dealer-installed equipment”. The other dealers I dealt with would just have a flat “market-adjustment” of usually the same amount.
    I don’t regret my purchase because I’ll never track my GR Corolla and I think the GR Corolla is a better street car, considering the overheating issues with the oil and rear transmission portion of the car in track conditions. So far, I haven’t experienced any overheating issues.
    I’m getting old now, being in my mid 30s, but I still find myself enjoying the drive in my GR Corolla. It really reminds me of my previous 2019 Subaru STI in regards to interior and driving experience although the STI had more soft touch areas. It’s odd because I’ve come full circle…after I sold the STI, I got a 2021 BMW M2C and now I’m back in a JDM car. I think at MSRP, and for a strictly street car, I think the Core model is a great value to those that want the JDM experience.

      You’re right, I should rephrase that as I’m getting older, I thought my tastes would change, but at the moment, it hasn’t. As much as I liked my M2C, the general maintenance costs of a BMW M are just crazy. I did the brakes myself and just for OEM pads and rotors, it was $2.5k. The other reason is being a coupe and limited space.
