In my humble opinion, the A340-600 was the best plane ever build... I'm not talking about fuel consumption (which is not up to today's standards), but when it comes to safety and space. I always enjoyed flying with SAA or Lufthansas A340s.
Talking about SAA - the service always has been excellent and the planes have always been kept clean and are well maintained.
Thanks for the video!!
Sawobuna A350! We are announcing the return of our Airbus A350. We are glad to have had you onboard with us.
Bring back the a340-600
@@andrewalpha7954 Unfortunately, do to budget constraints we at SAA had to retire our fleet of A340-600 Aircraft. While this is indeed sad, it’ll make way for our soon to be joining the fleet Airbus A350’s and launch SAA ahead of its competitors.
@OfficialSouthAfricanAirways, are you actually the airline?
@@RMurray2207 We are! We are currently working on building up an online community!
@@OfficialSouthAfricanAirways oh I'm going to subscribe to your channel.
I flew SAA from Washington DC to Johannesburg (first time in SA) great flight
Then we flew Johannesburg to Cape Town it was a dope flight ✈️
No complaints from me! Great service great food.
good morning
I think part of the reason you powered away so quickly during the take-off roll is that as it was a short-haul flight, the tanks didn't have much fuel in the wings, thus drastically reducing the take-off weight of the aircraft. The same was true of the A380 when it was doing a tour of various cities in the world as a marketing stunt, and folks could have a short 30-minute circular flight in cities like New York. Because it was so light on fuel and had only ballast in the hold, it took only a small fraction of its normal take-off roll and accelerated faster than it normally does.
Shocking someone could land in flatbed mode, clearly no seatbelt check done .
Usually the maximum thrust is adjusted for the weight and thus it's not really that different from a heavy airplane. Let's say MTOW is 100% N1, then 70% MTOW is maybe 80% N1. So not much more power really. The A380 however has crazy powerful engines, they were even reduced in power by software after the first flights.
I've flown on the South African Airways A340-600 and I've been in love with the aircraft ever since. Everyone loves the B747 including myself but the the A340-600 is my number 1 :)
SAA doesn’t operate their Intertainment system domestically just international routes
Michael Birch I was about to say this. The screen WAS working, they don't turn it on for such a short flight.
Nah, I flew to jfk and back to Johannesburg on SAA, my screen didn't work both ways but I went and chilled with the flight attendants, had a lot of fun tbh, had unlimited food and drink..
I came just to say this. While there might be issues wit it from time to time, I have seen for short flights, under 2 hours, the entertainment system is not turned on. I regularly do JNB-HERE both ways and there is no entertainment; a trend I have noticed on other airlines as well.
it is all a falsy that SAA is on its way back, few people know that when an airline stops flying a specific route for around 376 days that airline loses that time slot and must reapply for that route and it can take up to 10 years to get it back, how does bankrupt airline that's declared bankrupt in 2022 overnight reemerge solvent again---easy, because SAA is owned by the government taxpayers money is used to bail it out, billions are used to bail it out, to think a corrupt CEO of SAA sold the Jan Smuts Beijing route to Air china and India route for money, she received millions in return, to think SAA flew daily before 2020 the route Jan Smuts airport to Frankfurt and Munich and those flight were full booked, yes Airlink has bASICALLY TAKEN OVER, GOOD FOR THEM , I flew SAA back in July 2019 Munich jan smuts airport, what a pleasant flight, and quality of food and friendly staff, flight was full booked both ways, they flew SAu Paolo, Usa flights daily ,all are gone just because of corrupt ANC comrades
I love how in all of Noel's videos he always says a wholesome "Hi-ya!".
Haha :)
Flew on SAA from MUC to JNB in 2014 and it was so nice. Then a domestic flight from JNB to ELS. I have no complaints they even offer in flight food on domestic flights.

We flew SAA A340-600 from Jo'burg to London after Iberia screwed us. It was a superb flight with fantastic crew, food and working IFW. Something that Iberia can only dream about.
Had some big breakfasts in my time in the Joburg lounge en route to Durban or Cape when they flew Perth to Johannesburg. Found that lounge quiet and peaceful as opposed to say the Bidvest lounge which was a user pay area. One thing too about South African airports is that there's no announcements about boarding so keeping track of time is a must.
Even got a business upgrade in 2019 from JNB to CPT on their flat beds!
I’ve flown a similar Saa 340-600 to JFK and Hong Kong. I found the business class seat spacious. The chairs could do with a little more cushioning. Pillow was too small for a wide shouldered 6 footer. That said, I find it reasonably easy to sleep on their long haul flights. On JNB-JFK I manage an average of 8 hours sleep! The Hong Kong flight maybe 6 hours.
The crew is top notch. Very friendly cabin crew and the pilots are highly trained. Little wonder they’ve a solid safety record. I hope they emerge from business rescue stronger. It’s highly unlikely the government will allow SAA to fail as too many jobs from the airlines ecosystem would perish. Maybe 100k. It would be political suicide to shut it down. They only need to restructure, get a turnaround specialist with a strong aviation background and renew their fleet. Their creditors need to give them breathing space to allow investment in ops. The recent delivery of the 350-900 won’t harm its cause.
As one of the world’s oldest airlines- 85 years old, it is worth saving.
I agree!
Could not agree more well said my friend !!
Sadly it is soo bankrupt

I literally sat in that exact seat the day this video came out. And Saa have a new interior for there long haul flights.
I was just about to say the samething

Snake on a Nokia, this brings back memories, haha
Loved that game, and those phones were indestructible and lasted forever.
Snake should be left on a nokia. You don’t want snakes on a plane!
I can assure you if there were problems with the landing, I’m sure your seat neighbour wouldn’t mind getting trodden on 😂
I’ve flow SAA business many times over and I can assure you that the service and the offering is pretty up there 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
Masixole Lusasa I agree. I can't say the same for their economy offering, though.
SAA is only flown by government employees if paid for by the government. No one else pays the exorbitant prices for an airline that died by the hands of the greedy. Emirates and British Airways are much better value for money.
Nope nope nope horrible flight in economy for 13 hrs seats were thin as spirit seats so uncomfortable staff are rude as heck! And it’s very expensive for tickets compared to competitors
Disagree, sorry to say.
Using a 4 engine plane on a 90min domestic route? No wonder they're going broke
there could be cause for it. large amounts of cargo/mail for instance. The LHR to MAD route often sees big planes, including an A340-600 also, and it's only a couple of hours.
Could be collecting pax from Oliver Tambo as it's a through-flight to Europe.
Freight and Cargo.
LOL my first question when I clicked this video was " why are they using an A340 to start with ? "
Aircraft used from FACT -> FAOR due to large demand, and then from FAOR it flies long haul. So sort of a "pick up" from FACT, stops at FAOR to start its long haul. The same model is used by Lufthansa between EDDF and EIDW
I thought the A340 a nice aircraft - quite comfortable. I've only been on one and that was with Sabena in '99 from Jo'burg to Brussels just before they went titsup! Really nice comfortable flight in Economy with excellent staff!
Thanks broe we appreciate alot what you're doing for exposing great things about South Africa please keep it up ...cheers.

I would fly South African airways any day over air Canada they are 10 times better than air Canada
Totally this dude complains about walking.
MrMatthysR I’m with you on this boet. This also seems like a real fuckhead
The opposite for me. I've flown both airlines, both long haul.
I’ve flown both long haul too . SAA always wins
SAA uses fake parts and their maintenance crews are a substandard. They are not broke for no reason.
Haven't flown SAA in more than 24 years. It was the only airline I'd fly. Then one month, two flights that I know of, landed at OT in Johannesburg without being able to deploy flaps. Maintenance issues.

4:43 wow that was a strong takeoff. This airliner is basically short take off capable.
I hope SAA update their A340s with the same Business Class cabin that they have on their A330s.
They have for the ones they use for long haul flights.
You got this flight in the nick of time. Their A346 frames have all been sent for storage/scrapping. A350-900s now fly to JFK and FRA (or MUC? I don't remember)
I've only flown a Virgin A346, but I flew LHR-CPT on a 747-400 in 2001, and domestic to Durban and back on the 732. They were all great flights.I loved Cape Town, but I think it would kill me now - I have never partied so hard in my life...
Here is the problem with South African Airways, it is a state owned airline so that means that when Jacob Zuma came to power he asked his fat corrupt friends,"Who wants to run an airline, do no work and earn all the money. So when you purchase a SAA ticket the money doesn't circulate back into the economy like it should it instead goes towards that fat CEO'S holiday fund, buying a new BMW or buying a big house. And for example the last bailout SAA received was R21.7 billion, the CEO will take say R20 billion and split it between himself, the president and other corrupt officials that are part of the little money making scam. So think before you fly SAA.
Stop lying to other people the airline was destroyed in early 2000 by CEO called collin andrew, things became worse when it was unbundled from Transnet by Transnet CEO called Maria Ramos. Zuma found it dead
Mavhungu Vincent Mavhungu : I’m going to take a mad guess here and say your an ANC supporter right, because only a brainwashed idiot would defend Zuma
Slade Wilson 1 He doesn't have to support Jacob Zuma or the ANC to provide names and facts. Your comment, on the other hand, was just speculative. SAA is in a lot of trouble, but the prior CEO wasn't exactly fantastic either. How convenient for you to ignore that. How do you know where exactly ZAR20 million went and how did you come up with that figure? Of course corruption was rife in SAA but how did you prove your numbers? Stop attacking strangers on UA-cam and using political whining and just stick to the facts.
I dont even support nonsense called ANC, all you busy saying does not make sense, there is no gupta that withdrawn money at SAA, if ypu against it, provide evidence, i can tell you companies like Bidvest are milking it dry just use brain not emotions. Collin andrew and Maria destroyed killed it

Omg. I cried with laughter. The Nokia and snakes comment
I've sat in the pilots seat of one of those Il76's. Very nice and quite retro with lots of knobs and dials. It was a bit of a climb up to the cockpit.
You really must try royal air Maroc brand new b787-9 Dreamliner from Casablanca to Beijing the first flight is going to be in January16th 2020
Notice the reversers still engaged after departing the runway and disengaged when on the taxi...wow! You should have visited the aft (downstairs) economy bathrooms...!!
noel is more a airline reviewer than an aviation geek.
The Nokia 3310 Jet 😂😂😂😂
LOL.
I think the payload no the A340-600 you flew on was very light hence the fast and seemingly more powerful takeoff.
I love the A340-600
Love love love this videos Noel. Brilliantly made, informative, funny, honest.Seriously good. Can't travel so enjoying all these!
Loved the amount of legroom you had and the views over Cape Town
Great videos thanks for sharing, I have used SAA, just as good as some as the so-called top airlines for a lot less price-wise!
Last time I flew SAA was in 2013. But I miss Air Namibia the most, our airline sadly closed in 2019.
Love the Nokia reference, that was my first phone
i wish there were more A340-600's out there. South African provided a pretty awesome meal for a short flight, I'm impressed and would definitely pick them as a change from my usual BA flights.
Hi Noel. Sadly SAA's financial troubles are down to corruption and mismanagement. The airline has been bailed out infinite times, over 20 Billion Rand. I think only Alitalia may have had more government intervention.

Amazing video as always I remember flying on an A340-600 on Virgin Atlantic 3 years ago
madaboutfly I flew on that same plane on Virgin a few years ago. I loved it.
Of course it took off like it had afterburners on - Cape Town to JoBurg in a four engined widebody? You probably didn't even have half-full fuel tanks.
I'm new to your videos and I love them, I actually would love to do what you're doing...it's so cool and would love to know more how to get in this type of vlogging, I'm in East London, South Africa by the way
What was the 'magnificent glass of sa wine' that you couldn't find anywhere else"?
I flew inside the same Aircraft and Airline 7 years ago from Johannesburg to Frankfurt . Very long flight.
A340-600 is a beaut, shame it's being taken out of service by the remaining Airliners using them
It sure is. I'm just missing the most beautiful of the A340 series now - the A340-500.
A lot of airlines are taking them down due to poor fuel efficiency that makes them earn less profit.
SAA are replacing them with new A350s as we speak
Great video. Proudly South African
the interior is clean
Sad the a340s are getting retired
South African still fly them to my country but not where I live so I can’t see them
Or at least before they went bankrupt
Edit apparently they do still fly here
planes 4 me I live in New York I see them all the time between South African, Lufthansa, and virgin Atlantic
Vehicle Ranks
Well in Australia they don’t fly here sadly
The only place they do fly is perth which is on the other side of the country
Proudly South African.thanks for the video.
Send some of that rain further east to Australia please.
No problem bubby
i always like your cost per mile analysis ...loved the free trip to NYC....lucky
Wanted to fly internationals in the past but heard too many bad reviews and domestics were always OK. Plus SAA has a history of being one of the most expensive.
Hey man, what camera do you use for filming, as you're walking about. Looks like some kind of discrete shoulder mounted device?
Hey, it’s a GoPro Hero7 attached to the strap of my backpack.
Instablaster.
I flew on South African from Heathrow to Cape Town in 2007 the first time on a A340; it was a lovely flight, crew were first class and aircraft practically brand new. But subsequent flights to South Africa got progressively worse. I doubt I’ll fly with them again. It’s a shame for one of the worlds’ oldest airlines (1934).
Having said all that; I am brand loyal to British Airways but their business and first class is pretty dated.
_But subsequent flights to South Africa got progressively worse_
I'll give you three guess why.

Nice as usual. I'm intrigued by the Turkish A330 at CPT - I thought they flew south in the daytime with just a short turnaround.
No they leave around 6:00 and 7:00 idk exactly but only during summer
@@986BoxS ok, may have been different. When I flew it in October (video on my channel ;) ) the inbound landed for only a short turnaround before heading back to IST.
Did the same trip last Friday, I was really impressed by the Lounge in Cape Town, much more better than SEN lounge in Munich.
will probably never find myself on an A346 I love them.
Can still catch one with Virgin, Iberia and SAA. They're a nice ride.
also lufthansa still has them
I flew from Madrid to New York on one with Iberia!
Iberia fly an A346 LHR-MAD every Saturday at 18.45. Cost me less than £100 single when I did it and you can book the premium economy seats for no extra. Sit in the one right at the front near the bulkhead and you've a couple of windows and loads of legroom. Only problem with doing that now is you'll fly in darkness, when I did it in September I fortuitously took off in the day, witnessed a jaw dropping sunset and landed as dark fell... if you book a ticket for sometime in March you will probably see the sunset also. Flightaware have a web app that allows you to search for flights and specify/filter by aircraft type.
I’ve subscribed enjoying the videos and they are really great for people to learn if they are first time flyers 🛫
00:01:52 You've got 3 different models of British Airways aircraft, of quite major size difference, all on the ground in Cape Town. Assuming that they will all be returning to UK hub airports, and covering a fairly significant range, why the size difference?!.............. Scratch this comment, have just found out that BA operate domestic flights within the RSA, through a franchise system.

Great video as usual Noel! Been watching your channel since the inflight video days, just don't often comment
The fact That the Plane is Old but it’s still looks Bttr ..Bigup to SAAT ..One of the Best AMO in the World
1:13 At the point in time of writing this, that a340 is sitting unmarked at OR Tambo with two sister a340s.
Man when will you post the BA A380 trip report from LHR go JNB?
This legend bought a business class ticket for a 1hr 30 flight
Ooh! Johannesburg!
I look forward to you doing a long haul A 340-600 video with SA. Thanks for the lovely videos
Wow Airbus A340-600 flight nice :)
It will take a Devine intervention miracle to save SAA financially now.

Yes sure, but it won`t until employees get jobs based on skin colour as opposed to ability.
@Erich Weiler
Yes. I will rephrase as my original comment was poorly put together I admit.
Things will not change for the better until the current system of getting a job there based on either of your skin colour, or who you know is in place.
To put it simply BEE must end and merit based employment must replace it.
I hope what I meant is clear now.

There are plenty of companies making money even with BBBEE.
SAA needs privatisation, just like Telkom.
And all will be fine.
Taking off in Dornier 328 style😲
On this flight they looked quite good,on long haul they are bottom of the pile, very strange...
SAA Business class is good even on long haul routes. Do try to test the 1-2-1 configuration on the A330-300. Only negative of this video (which is not your fault) is the UA-cam inserted ad prior to the video of someone I once sued on behalf of a client.

The Busiest Air Route in Africa , and also 13th busiest in the world. Incidentally another Cape Town to Joburg route also makes it in the top 3 Busiest Air routes in Africa : this one goes to Lansering Aiport , Joberg's second International Airport as opposed to Oliver Tambo.

I love you videos! The picture is always so sharp and clear and the color is just breathtaking! What do record your flights on and do you keep it so steady with minimal shake?
I saw an SAA A340-600 in Hong Kong - she sticks out big time
i very much like south african airways.
Great sense of (dry) humor... The Nokia 3310 comment... great!
Off the runway via highspeed exit with the TR's still deployed, that's not something I see very often.
How is it bankrupt if they bought the new a350-900
They are leased , from Hainan Airlines, as well as Air Mauritius/Seychelles, if I understand correctly. Still, not sure how they will pay for them.
@@Bismuth69 tax man will pay
Please do fly from Johannesburg to NYC
I did and it was one of the worst experiences. On both flights going and return, we went 12 hours without any meals or snacks
Brilliant..loved the Nokia humour too
The passenger next to you shouldn't of been allowed to stay flat for landing, it's impeding your exit in an emergency....
Yes, I fully agree
I remember flying to SA in the 80's on a BA 747.
I think, because of excitement I couldn't get to sleep, even on the 4 centre seats. I finally got to sleep, let's say at about 03:30 only to be woken 10 minutes later and told to sit up as we were starting our descent to Nairobi. I would have liked a bit more sleep.
On that flight, I remember leaving Heathrow, directly behind Concord.
What a coincidence? As am watching this video a South African Airways flight flies above my house the plane looks cool, and feel like am the one inside the plane and experiencing the same thing the vloger is experiencing.
No one knows I'm guessing its mismanagement of funds coz our government is crazy
Thank goodness SAA is out of bankruptcy!
Pretty cool video! thank you for sharing!
Great content as always Noel! What trips do you have planned next year?
At 1:54 you can see an Ilushin Il-76 aircraft on the top left corner.
Thanks for taking me back home, all be it briefly! Love the vide Noel :)
That thumbnail and title made me think this was a bald and bankrupt video
They recently just bought an airbus A350 so I don't think they are bankrupt anymore

Never flown SAA. Do love Air Canada though. Sorry I won't get the chance to fly SAA
i used to fly that route often back in the 1980`s. usually on a boeing 727 !!
That's incredible! Would have loved a ride on a 727 at some point :(
They was bankrupt last week and now...?
Don’t worry, SAA has been experiencing financial difficulties, but not yet bankrupt (officially at least ;) )
@@daanverheij5175 okey👍
Yes the government has put the business under business rescue and will not be shut down. They going to start the turn around plan in beginning of Jan which includes retiring all a340s and deploying all a350s to New York, Frankfurt and Perth. That's the tea, I know CUZ I live and am South African
Now they are BALD
Smart idea with the A340's being replaced by the A350, more range and lower fuel consumption
1:52 What does the MaX doing here?!!
Muhammad Adib Hisham Shukri It is not a MAX, it is a 737-800 with split scimitar winglets.
Thanks Noel for a great video yet again !! Well done !
What kind of aircraft was the BA being pushed back? Looked awful small to be all the way in Africa
The seating looks almost identical to my Air France A380 bus class, CDG to ATL last month. My seat mate was flat the entire flight. Had to shake him to get to the toilet
Great video as always! Thanks!
