I say this because the other consoles were too weak to run it. The Xbox One could or PS4 for sure but at minimal settings. A high-end Pc still can have a hard time running it. How many more years till we have film quality graphics. Where people can't tell if you're watching a movie or playing a game. And by that I mean actual gameplay not cutscenes. That's the big question. Of course no one knows the answer yet but I REALLY hope it's in my lifetime.
Open world games are by far my favorite genre and what makes them even better is VR which turns these games into mind's blowing experiences games like fallout 4vr Skyrim VR are amazing then you have the modded VR games like dying light in VR is just amazing and then there's my favorite the GTAV VR mod this is simply the greatest gaming experience I've ever had looking forward to more in the future
Had to scroll through comments, I knew someone else had to mention Gothic. It had many features Elder Scrolls series only later implemented, and world was so well designed.
+PLord Yeah with the restriction of visting this "open world" as a ghost because the mobbs will aggro you from a mile away if you're a lvl 1 in Hyjal or something.
+fatarsemonkey A true open world lets you move from any point A to any point B with no restrictions and allows you to do anything you want at any time in any place within the game world. You can't do that in WoW.
fatarsemonkey That is incorrect even by loose definition. An open world game is a game where a player can move freely and has the freedom to accomplish objectives in a non linear form. WoW is VERY linear in how to accomplish objectives and how you can progress in the game. This goes counter to the open world concept. A true open world is generally not possible in an MMO that has any sort of level system or content that is story/mission locked. WoW has both of these and therefore is not truly an open world game.It is because of things like this that it was not included in this video.
Playing Shenmue for the first time when it came out, shortly after I got a Sega DreamCast was truly one of the most amazing Memories I have in gaming!! Nothing before it, even came close to just how immersed you felt the first time getting up, Browsing they all the Drawers in your house, going to practice in the Dojo & then, finally beginning your adventure where everything seems so new and fresh and amazing at the time!! And anybody else like me who shares this truly exceptional memory, can never forget getting the job at the docks running the forklift!!!! Than the following forklift races!!!! I absolutely love the first Shenmue & have it on both my Ps4pro & Xb1x!!
Agreed. Assassin's Creed should have been mentioned for being the first open world stealth game instead of Metal Gear Solid 5. But hey, people just have to praise Hideo Kojima for literally anything right?
To clarify before I make this statement, I was very young: not never ending story unless in a remaster they covered the boobs. I remember being a kid and thinking I would get in trouble if my mom knew the never ending story had breasts in it.
Fable cannot compare to an open exploration world like Morrowind. Fable was, ok. But very badly marketed from the start. But, no rpg can compare to TES games really. They are in league of there own. Not because of the RPG or open world, But because of both of these, and the lore that backs them up. It's simply astounding.
+Wodinn Morrowind was the peak in the open world aspect of ES games, each game after that has cut back more & more of the freedom to explore aspects, remember when we could super jump, walk on water & fly? oblivion & skyrim murdered that freedom.
THe Elder Scrolls games are great, but The Witcher 3 took the TES' formula and cranked it up to 11. I can't wait to see what Bethesda can do to top The Witcher 3.
cmq18 It didn't take the TES formula, like at all. They are totally different, Skyrim is my favourite game of all time, and I thought The Witcher 3 was... Fine, I suppose, but still pretty boring.
Came here just to give you a thumbs up for mentioning Asheron's Call. Amazing game for its time that I hardly ever see mentioned anywhere by anyone. It was revolutionary by MMORPG games standards too, the combat, the spell crafting system, and the skills system were great
The Witcher 3 soured every game I've played since. It was so good that when I finished it and all expansions, I was disappointed and couldn't even play anything else for a couple months.
Witcher 3 stans are so annoying. Y'all are like Star Wars fans acting like it does something that's never been done before and will never be done again. Its a great game, but if you that weirdly invested in some shit where you press buttons you need something called a life: girlfriend, career, other hobbies that aren't gaming.
@@geordiejones5618 Listen we all know that gaming all day, every day, throughout a lifetime, is a waste of a lifetime. I agree on that. But what he said never implied that he has no life outside of gaming. Your comment has 3 sentences, the first of which is a remark, a personal opinion, calling someone annoying in the comment section of a gaming video, for praising a good game. The second sentence is simply not true, because no one claims that nothing like Witcher 3 will ever be done again, and in fact agree that it has been done in smaller scales before. No other game just had had the same effect on them. And your third sentence, could be said about any hobby ever. Overall your comment neither adds anything of value to the comment section or to your own life, nor does it accomplish anything other than being obnoxiously rude.
What about gothic? The First One where you have to choose between factions, and that you didn't have to wait for loading everytime you had to enter a cave
this video contains every imp game like skyrim n zelda but it misses something very imp .........gta sanandreas.. i consider it to be the 2nd best openworld game after skyrim
GTA SA defintely pushed the limits of the PS2 with its 3 city open world... but yea there are way to many to mention already they had to skip a lot to gamechangers and it still felt like it missed things
San Andreas is better than III, for sure, but GTAIII had a great impact on the industry. GTAIII is a milestone, while GTA-SA is an evolution of GTAIII.
I think Gothic 1 should be on the list. Open world game from 2001 where you can forge swords, cook food, open locks, steal pockets, smoke joints, block and dodge attacks and join three fractions with differend story....This game deserve some credit.
+BOBlibob Have you got spore? Elite Dangerous? Try mixing both and add a dash of the X-series. Then focus more on discovery. That's what it'll probably be like
Gameranx deserves BIG props for this well researched piece ;-) I was fully expecting them to skip right over some of these earlier titles. Some VERY notable omissions: Midwinter 1 & 2 and Hunter (on the Amiga) Mercenaries - Playground of Destruction (PS2/Xbox) Body Harvest (N64) Microsoft Flight Sim (PC)
+tom ato (Tomato) yeah i mean when the video started the first thing that i could think of was gta 5 and he did't even talk about san andreas he was talking about iv which we all know it was kinda fail and when gta5 came out it was san andreas and gta iv together and even better
+tom ato (Tomato) GTA 5 really didn't do anything new for open world. In fact it kind of detracted from its own series rather than adding anything new. I mean it's DEFINITELY pretty...but uh...yeah. Not much else.
I take it you aren't counting MMO's in this? Everquest, World of Warcraft, and EVE Online were very noticeably missing from this video. Heck, EVE Online actually succeeds in having everything be basically 100% player driven content.
+Ruthwik Rao It will definately be great, but since people like you overhype NMS so much then I can promise it will be a big dissapointment, any game would be with so high expectations
oliver enevoldsen lol what the heck does "people like you" even mean? You don't know shit about what I expect from the game. I am not even excited to play the game cuz I don't have the consoles or the pc specs required for it nor am I ready to shell out 60$ for it. I was just talking about how this game in particular will basically revolutionize the concept of open world because that's what this video is about. I'm not overhyped for the game, I'm just curious how the game will live up to the expectations. I too agree that the game is being hyped beyond control and surely a lot of people will be disappointed by it not because it won't be great but the exepctations. It's the nature of all games that have high expectations, as you mentioned. I agree with you but you're being incredibly stupid to assume shit like "people like you" before knowing the entire story.
How Big is the Map? Really I just don't want it to end deep down so I refrain from playing it. I would like to play it but i just get an urge that says NO
Fuck naw. I'm not down with that. We need the two companies in competition. Also CD projekt is good, but Rockstar made GTA 3, GTA vice, GTA 4, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, LA noire....and even bully To say the least, CD projekt has a long way to go before it is on the level of Master Rockstar. The ultimate one.
thanks Jim. If the next elder scrolls or WoW expansion costs $200, because they also said "how come a 6 hour game costs $60...surely a 200+ hour game is worth......" We are done as best pals for life.
No Mans Sky isn't open world. It's open universe! I haven't been this excited for a game for quite some time. It looks beautiful. And I hope they end up crushing the haters.
Damn I've been subbed for a long time but never really dug deep into your content. Just saw random videos, game reviews etc (if I remember right) but these videos are awesome! Love learning more about obscure gaming history and technical facts about graphics/processing etc.
WoW was great at taking groundbreaking ideas and refining them. But this video is about the groundbreakers, and as much as I love WoW, that is not what they do.
WoW is the very opposite of open world! It is so linear, limited and predictable! Tell me your level and ill tell you in what zone you are (usualy one of 2-3). Tell me your guild (how good it is) and ill tell you what raid you are doing (usualy one of 2-3 options)

Open world games from Bethesda are pretty much the only games I play not saying that I love all of their titles there just the best open world games there are next to the Whitcher three which is by far one of the best thank you for making the video I enjoyed it thoroughly and as always you guys rock!
Lcarpetron Dookmarriot do you really think clientside performances are gonna fix dayz? do you know what serverside perforamnces are? thats what dayz really needs.
Wouldn't say it's a failure, they made a ton of money off of it. And yes I know they're better games but dayz is a really unique fun game to play, a lot of memories.
+leeroy newman DayZ (the mod) is important because it influenced lots of indie developers to create their own open-zombie-survival-MMO, which evolved into open-something dangerous-survival-MMO (like Ark with dinosaurs or The Forest with those... things).
+Jim Ferguson It is the first open world game to have stealth as the main focus of the game. Others include it as an option but that's never the main focus in them.
+RevanBladeZ lol,m8 its your choice,if you want you can be sneaky, same with mgs v,kill everyone with a robot or with a pistol with silencer,so you should play the games
oh wow i want to like this video 4 times in a row, GREAT job on this one, this might be one of your best videos yet. also you forgot grand theft auto 5, now this game is a great open world game, but it is also one of the first games that truly brought story telling to video games, before grand theft auto 5 there were not many games based around a story, they were all very linear, grand theft auto 5 on the other hand was open world and at the same time one of the best story's ever told in modern video game history!
AC is an eksample og what happens when a good idea is done with sloppy execution, plus, it isn't as influential as you may think, at least not compared to the other games on the list
I would plan everything I'm gonna do, but I'm still not sure how much you can do. I'm waiting till I know every that you can do befor I plan out. I'm ad voiding all advertising updates and what not. Don't want anything spoiled 😀 Preorder should be here in a few weeks now 😬
+Michael Copeland The difference is that an MMO has multiple players, which means that each one can't have a unique impact on the world. The difference between Skyrim and ESO is that in the former, your character is the singular hero of the whole story, whereas in the latter there are many heroes. It would be impossible for every single one of the thousands of players in that game to have as much influence on the game world as the Dragonborn or the Nerevarine have on Tamriel in their respective games.
There are some factual errors in this one: -Elite and Zelda 1 were also action games so Metroid can't be the first open world action game, not to mention the other sidescrolling non-linear games made before it -ES1 was 1994 like first stated, not 1990 like stated later in the vid
Tbh I really didn't enjoy Saints Row....I quit after playing it for a few minutes....It was just a waste of my time and money I'd rather just go play gta v again
Blaze CoC Yeah, you really should play Saints Row 2! That game has been on my top list for years, because of the city (every district has it's own culture, for example, you can only see goths near the university), the storyline (people will die in missions, even a lutenant. this can sometimes be sad but really gets you into story and makes you want to get revenge on the other gangs that killed 'em) and a lot of fun besides the main missions like racing and doing derbies. :) To be honest, the controls feel quite annoying when you play it on PC for the first time due to the bad port. Saints Row 4 & Gat out of Hell however can be fun to troll in, but that's all. Saints Row 3 is kinda boring due to the liveless city. The first SR is quite good actually, I think GTA fans will love it, problem is, it's for xBox 360 only.
+TheLoreGeek I hate people like you, thinking that it's unacceptable that you have to pay an indie game pretty much the same price as an AAA game, no man's sky is trying something new, hellogames put a lot of effort on this game and I don't understand how more people complain about NMS costing 60 dollards than fucking call of duty costing 70 dollars
Andrés Pizarro Xenoblade chronicles 3D was the biggest open world game on handheld until the Nintendo switch came out and legend of Zelda breath of the wild came with it.
There's a few more early open world games that were about, I'll see if I can remember their years. They might not be the first one ever, but still early examples of what was to later become. 1989 saw Vette! You were to race around a low poly recreation of San Francisco and it was completely open world. You could ignore the race to your hearts content. I don't know the exact size of the map but it was huge, an example of what early DOS computers could really do. It included as many landmarks as it could as well as areas. One of the games I had been able to play and it was so much fun, violent too, nothing like tearing down Lombard Street and running over a nun. You crashed and bashed your way through the city, to the finish line you took whatever route you wanted and they weren't just pathways it was a fully realised city with districts and places to go in totally irrelevant places to the race. You had a variety of camera angles and car tuning abilities. You even could have accidents which could game over you or get pulled over by the police, which you could try to talk your way into being let off or bribe, they didn't always work though and you still might get busted. There was another game before Vette! from 1988, I forget its name but it is a similar game. Also before Vette! were the early Test Drive games. Another early 3D game of that time was Terminator, for DOS machines in 1990. It was a first person shooter where you took the role of either Kyle Reese or the Terminator, the objective to kill the Terminator or escape him, if you played as him you had to track down and kill both Kyle and Sarah. It had a rather sizeable recreation of L.A. to explore although nowhere near as big as Vettes San Francisco. In you you stole cars, ran people over, shot people, had police chases. You could go into shops and buy things or steal things, if caught stealing the cops would be called on you. There were other types of buildings you could go into although I never did figure out what they were all for, I think you were supposed to find information on the whereabouts of Sarah and Kyle....but you had an indicator of where they might be anyway. Another game I can think of came out around the time of GTA 1, Crime Cities, an open world game like descent, flying cars in a future cyberpunk dystopian setting, all huge cities to fly up and down and all around in. Shooting the Hell out of other enemy vehicles. Some of the early games tried a lot of ideas and some neat open world games can be found, but those ones I can mention as they are ones I have played and can recall a bit more about them. I feel like I may have made this post before, this video seems familiar although I have no indication on my end of seeing it. Oh well, those are some games anyhow.
The worst open world game that I hate is called Life.
I think it's more of a mathematical equation (or set of them) rather than a game.
how so?

Go check GTA 5 redux mod. It is really realistic.
dude no way what about unchated 4
Yes..and I wonder how immersive it will get..not only seeing 'real life' graphics but full 3d and touch etc. Like a holodeck.
10 years - 2026
no man's sky? Guild Wars? Final Fantasy? Shadow of the Colossus? WoW? Far Cry Primal? Dragon's Dogma? Infamous? Crack Down? Xenoblade Chronicles? Prototype? Burnout Paradise? Ghost Recon? Saint's Row? Sleeping Dogs? Watch Dogs? The Division? ok
ikr?
THANK YOU for mentioning Dragon's Dogma and InFamous, those were both awesome yet underrated
+Figs Final Fantasy is not open world
+sguitas FF15 is going to be open world so be excited for that
saints row 3 had to be the best ive ever played :)
Who else just took a trip down memory lane
Open world games are by far my favorite genre and what makes them even better is VR which turns these games into mind's blowing experiences games like fallout 4vr Skyrim VR are amazing then you have the modded VR games like dying light in VR is just amazing and then there's my favorite the GTAV VR mod this is simply the greatest gaming experience I've ever had looking forward to more in the future
no gothic?, the first actual awesome open world rpg and to this day still is awesome
Had to scroll through comments, I knew someone else had to mention Gothic. It had many features Elder Scrolls series only later implemented, and world was so well designed.
leidenisthebest ur avatar makes it look funny
I'm convinced that the only people who like Gothic games are just weird contrarians who find everything wrong with any game made after 2005
Farcry 3 was heavily stealth based. I'm not sure you could call it a stealth game, but it was certainly the precursor to that.
You missed a big one: 2004-World of Warcraft.
fatarsemonkey
I wasn't talking to the trolls, i was talking to the maker of video.
...that's an mmo not an open world
+PLord Yeah with the restriction of visting this "open world" as a ghost because the mobbs will aggro you from a mile away if you're a lvl 1 in Hyjal or something.
Shenmue on the almighty Dreamcast was a real game changer.
I'm surprised Assassin's Creed wasn't mentioned.
Agreed. Assassin's Creed should have been mentioned for being the first open world stealth game instead of Metal Gear Solid 5. But hey, people just have to praise Hideo Kojima for literally anything right?
And up this year..
No Man's Sky.
Can't wait for tht. Since they finally win the lawsuit of the word "Sky". Word-based lawsuit,I just hate that thing.
it looks like shit lololol
It good for people who love exploration and it seem good so far
Tweetug 36 i think it looks shit just buy gta san andreas and 4 for exploration xdd
+JeevesPlays Minecraft Obvious troll is obvious.
Did you know that the blue whale could be the smallest living creature if it just wasn't that large?
WOAH!!! Mind BLOWN!!!
Wow best gaming channel hands down!
The video is about games but correct me if I’m wrong but the thumb nail is from the Never ending Story
To clarify before I make this statement, I was very young: not never ending story unless in a remaster they covered the boobs. I remember being a kid and thinking I would get in trouble if my mom knew the never ending story had breasts in it.
That's what I was thinking : "they made a game on it?"
At 10:18 Isn't that JC3?
Nope.
JC3 came out last year as Jc2 came out a few years ago
***** Wait what? How?
+adam minebomb it's red faction gurielli
+Inkling Joe last year
Fable cannot compare to an open exploration world like Morrowind.
+Fuzzy Duo I'd rather have a genuine combat system that looks and feels good than the ability to super jump and fly (in Skyrim you can walk on water)
I'm not going to argue my point, because you're not going to get it. Also, I'm going to guess you don't like reading books.
Ryan Stoned good lord, why? That gameplay is atrocious.
Anyone else noticed that the map at 3:08 is a swastic cross? O.o
+DarkHero - Destiny Content
Yep. It was meant to be the thing that the swastika was based off of, not the actual swastika. :\
Actually it's apparently meant to be a Buddhist symbol of peace but you know
Ethan Drain I actually knew that
+DarkHero - Destiny Content oh ok I just assumed you didn't
+DarkHero - Destiny Content Th-the-then when ask??
What about gothic? The First One where you have to choose between factions, and that you didn't have to wait for loading everytime you had to enter a cave
Man the fact you mentioned Asherons Call. That was my jam. I miss it.
this video contains every imp game like skyrim n zelda but it misses something very imp .........gta sanandreas.. i consider it to be the 2nd best openworld game after skyrim
uma devtala they didn't say the best open world games they said the open world games that pushed the limits
MINECRAFT BROOOOOOOO
GTA SA defintely pushed the limits of the PS2 with its 3 city open world... but yea there are way to many to mention already they had to skip a lot to gamechangers and it still felt like it missed things
He talk about gta.. San Andreas came after lots of chapter
San Andreas is better than III, for sure, but GTAIII had a great impact on the industry.
GTAIII is a milestone, while GTA-SA is an evolution of GTAIII.
witcher 3 is by far the best open world rpg i've played :)
no mention for pokemon?
ut feels open, especially with a region map in each game
*it
It's not a open world you have to beat areas to move on. So it doesn't fit on this list
+WoodedOrange same goes to GTA
+WoodedOrange an open world pokemon game would be legit.
CHIMICHANGAS indeed, accept for its latest entry gta 5
I think Gothic 1 should be on the list. Open world game from 2001 where you can forge swords, cook food, open locks, steal pockets, smoke joints, block and dodge attacks and join three fractions with differend story....This game deserve some credit.
Does Mercenaries 1 & 2 not count as open world?
I am interested in seeing what No Man's Sky will be like.
its a will buy to me
dont give a shit about the price
i want to name stuff Deeznuts
+BOBlibob Have you got spore? Elite Dangerous? Try mixing both and add a dash of the X-series. Then focus more on discovery. That's what it'll probably be like
***** stop being jealous of my swagger
Why would you choose all those minion pics
Gameranx deserves BIG props for this well researched piece ;-) I was fully expecting them to skip right over some of these earlier titles. Some VERY notable omissions: Midwinter 1 & 2 and Hunter (on the Amiga) Mercenaries - Playground of Destruction (PS2/Xbox) Body Harvest (N64) Microsoft Flight Sim (PC)
Thanks@
how can u forget to put gta 5
ikr
+tom ato (Tomato) yeah i mean when the video started the first thing that i could think of was gta 5 and he did't even talk about san andreas he was talking about iv which we all know it was kinda fail and when gta5 came out it was san andreas and gta iv together and even better
totally agree
+tom ato (Tomato) good game, but wasn't really a milestone
+tom ato (Tomato) GTA 5 really didn't do anything new for open world. In fact it kind of detracted from its own series rather than adding anything new. I mean it's DEFINITELY pretty...but uh...yeah. Not much else.
I take it you aren't counting MMO's in this? Everquest, World of Warcraft, and EVE Online were very noticeably missing from this video. Heck, EVE Online actually succeeds in having everything be basically 100% player driven content.
Matt Brandenburg MMOS can be linear, and they don't provide as much freedom as a game like breath of the wild
SHENMUE!!!
I need to play that again
Ive heard, I hope to god it is good. The trailer was really bad, which is worrying, but could be nothing.
I never played it but I watched the whole thing on UA-cam over several days! I have the new one ordered by backing it but it is taking forever!
Nice intro! Great video as always. I love these gaming history lessons. 🤓🤓🤓
Next step:
No Man's Sky is gonna freaking blow everything out of the water.
+Ruthwik Rao It will definately be great, but since people like you overhype NMS so much then I can promise it will be a big dissapointment, any game would be with so high expectations
+oliver enevoldsen Nah. If Skyrim had the highest expectations possible, it still woulda delivered.
Jose GomezFranco no game would ever be able to deliver with extremely much hype to live up to.
oliver enevoldsen lol what the heck does "people like you" even mean?
+Ruthwik Rao Star Citizen is the better grown up version of No Mans Sky
still haven't completed witcher 3 and have had it since release...>.
Are you also doing all the side missions?
+How Big is the Map? no
Redheadedgamer The Witcher 3 is just a big long game!!! Hours and hours of great gameplay!
How Big is the Map? Really I just don't want it to end deep down so I refrain from playing it. I would like to play it but i just get an urge that says NO
Redheadedgamer If the games ends, you can play the DLC!
Skyrim = best game of all time (possibly until TES6)
100% best series on this channel
i want to see rock star and cd project red make a game together.
damm
damn*
+witcher fanboy undead redemption made by rockstar and cd project red pls
Fuck naw. I'm not down with that. We need the two companies in competition.
Also CD projekt is good, but Rockstar made GTA 3, GTA vice, GTA 4, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, LA noire....and even bully
To say the least, CD projekt has a long way to go before it is on the level of Master Rockstar. The ultimate one.
The Witcher V, where Gerald is doing heists with MG's in Los Santos and in the Map of Witcher 3 (lol)
and then the skies parted, the birds sang and our savior Rockstar blessed us with the all holy Red Dead Redemption 2.
Amen. lol
Why does a 6 hour long, linear piece of shit game cost as much as a 200+ hour RPG?
$$$$$
***** lol yeah, but shouldn't bigger and longer games cost more?
Like the way a single movie DVD is cheaper than a TV series boxset.
+jim jimjim Which game are you talking about?
rikoLas All games really. Some games you can complete in just one day, when others you can play for literally hundreds of hours.
thanks Jim. If the next elder scrolls or WoW expansion costs $200, because they also said "how come a 6 hour game costs $60...surely a 200+ hour game is worth......" We are done as best pals for life.
YOU GUYS PUT MIDTOWN MADNESS IN THIS VIDEO THANK YOU!!! We need a Midtown Madness 4!!!
I think No Mans Sky can be the next open world game...when it comes out.
+BG GAMER
. . . if it ever comes out. :(
ya
+BG GAMER star citizen^^
No Mans Sky isn't open world. It's open universe! I haven't been this excited for a game for quite some time. It looks beautiful. And I hope they end up crushing the haters.
me too :D
Name of the song at the beginning?
"goes back several decades", ahh yes I remember the famous 1947 open world game.
CumberCube several could mean 3
Damn I've been subbed for a long time but never really dug deep into your content.
Just saw random videos, game reviews etc (if I remember right) but these videos are awesome! Love learning more about obscure gaming history and technical facts about graphics/processing etc.
what about WoW?
Verification mark and 2 likes.
You are one decade late
I strongly disagree that Skyrim is more dense than Morrowind. Morrowind was HIGHLY populated. Otherwise, carry on.
My favourite open world game but also my favourite game at all is Skyrim. It's just perfect. You can do whatever you want!
skyrim is so damn oveerrateed---
AlexMan12233 my keyboard was actually broken, but thank you for the 10/10 comeback
it is a good game.,.. but nowhere near a 10/10, i will give it a score of about 7/10, maybe less
GreenPower Arena is the best TES game. Sorry.
Skyrim is fun, but Morrowind shreds it
Amazing work bro!
why there is no world of warcraft? its one of bigest open world games
Watch the video, then comment mmmkay?
WoW was great at taking groundbreaking ideas and refining them. But this video is about the groundbreakers, and as much as I love WoW, that is not what they do.
WoW is the very opposite of open world! It is so linear, limited and predictable!
Tell me your level and ill tell you in what zone you are (usualy one of 2-3). Tell me your guild (how good it is) and ill tell you what raid you are doing (usualy one of 2-3 options)

zulzmei, you ser are an idiot
Dark Souls is definitely open world you didn t even mention it.... THE SHORTCUTS
GTA 5 was not mentioned in this video.... aiiiight....
+Armyguywizerdo16 just was to write that one down too ^^ :)
Yes it was watch the video again
EnderDragonProductions Only GTA 1, 2 and 3 were mentioned...
+Armyguywizerdo16 4 too
Open world games from Bethesda are pretty much the only games I play not saying that I love all of their titles there just the best open world games there are next to the Whitcher three which is by far one of the best thank you for making the video I enjoyed it thoroughly and as always you guys rock!
Is that Never Ending Story as the thumbnail?
+Terra Gamer I don't think so but that is what that reminded me of.
dayz isnt a open world game, its a failure
Lol
+leeroy newman wait til 0.60
Lcarpetron Dookmarriot do you really think clientside performances are gonna fix dayz? do you know what serverside perforamnces are? thats what dayz really needs.
Wouldn't say it's a failure, they made a ton of money off of it. And yes I know they're better games but dayz is a really unique fun game to play, a lot of memories.
+leeroy newman
DayZ (the mod) is important because it influenced lots of indie developers to create their own open-zombie-survival-MMO, which evolved into open-something dangerous-survival-MMO (like Ark with dinosaurs or The Forest with those... things).
You don't just show an image of Assassins Creed, in a video about open world, and not even mention the AC series once.
+Comrade Joseph Stalin yeah, and apparently MGS V is the first open world stealth game
+Jim Ferguson It is the first open world game to have stealth as the main focus of the game. Others include it as an option but that's never the main focus in them.
+RevanBladeZ lol u wut m8,assassins creed,keyword "assassin",ninja,stealth....
ciprianrobo
If you have played even a single game in the series you would know that you spend more time fighting than you do sneaking.
+RevanBladeZ lol,m8 its your choice,if you want you can be sneaky, same with mgs v,kill everyone with a robot or with a pistol with silencer,so you should play the games
oh wow i want to like this video 4 times in a row, GREAT job on this one, this might be one of your best videos yet. also you forgot grand theft auto 5, now this game is a great open world game, but it is also one of the first games that truly brought story telling to video games, before grand theft auto 5 there were not many games based around a story, they were all very linear, grand theft auto 5 on the other hand was open world and at the same time one of the best story's ever told in modern video game history!
no mention of how influential Assassin's Creed was????? especially number 2!
AC is an eksample og what happens when a good idea is done with sloppy execution, plus, it isn't as influential as you may think, at least not compared to the other games on the list
It still deserved a mention on this timeline
People like me who love open world camels I bet can't wait for no mans sky. Whose excited?
open world camels are life
space goat must die
space goat must die
+Tom Parham Excited? Hell, I'm already planning out everything I'm going to be doing for that game!
I would plan everything I'm gonna do, but I'm still not sure how much you can do. I'm waiting till I know every that you can do befor I plan out. I'm ad voiding all advertising updates and what not. Don't want anything spoiled 😀 Preorder should be here in a few weeks now 😬
But we completely skipped over San Andreas? Character stats, In depth character arc, and a larger populated world??
that stuff was alrdy done in games a little before san andreas
+Kdkdhshs Shshbs examples?
+dsmoot09 i would prob say fable is a good example i guess
This is a great video. Good job.
how about the crew?
How do you not have World of Warcraft in this video
It's an MMO not open world game. there's a difference.
+SimonOverYonder SimonOverYonder are you serious right now. Your telling me World of Warcraft is not open world. I heard everything now
+Michael Copeland he only listed single player games. calm down.
All the mmo are basically open world. so there is no special for World of Warcrafe in any reason.
I know nobody cares but... you guys forgot the good racers like forza horizon, need for speed, the crew, midnight club, and forza horizon 2!!!!!
+Casey Cole the crew is so big
Casey Cole I mean, they are pretty shitty.
Midnight Club LA
There are some factual errors in this one:
-Elite and Zelda 1 were also action games so Metroid can't be the first open world action game, not to mention the other sidescrolling non-linear games made before it
-ES1 was 1994 like first stated, not 1990 like stated later in the vid
Not even a small mention of Saints Row..
Tbh I really didn't enjoy Saints Row....I quit after playing it for a few minutes....It was just a waste of my time and money I'd rather just go play gta v again
+Blaze CoC play saints row 2 the rest are a waste of time and shit
+Evsbear1 Ive never played it gonna check it out later
Blaze CoC Yeah, you really should play Saints Row 2! That game has been on my top list for years, because of the city (every district has it's own culture, for example, you can only see goths near the university), the storyline (people will die in missions, even a lutenant. this can sometimes be sad but really gets you into story and makes you want to get revenge on the other gangs that killed 'em) and a lot of fun besides the main missions like racing and doing derbies. :)
To be honest, the controls feel quite annoying when you play it on PC for the first time due to the bad port.
Saints Row 4 & Gat out of Hell however can be fun to troll in, but that's all. Saints Row 3 is kinda boring due to the liveless city.
The first SR is quite good actually, I think GTA fans will love it, problem is, it's for xBox 360 only.
No man's sky is the future...
+dmares700 Yeah, shit is SOO overhyped, it's not going to live up to expectations.
won't even pick it up if it's over 15 euros.
+TheLoreGeek good we don't need negative Nancy buy games over 15 euros
dmares700 sure, cuz charging 60 euros for indie game is justified..
+TheLoreGeek noob, no man's sky is definitly worth every single euro
+TheLoreGeek I hate people like you, thinking that it's unacceptable that you have to pay an indie game pretty much the same price as an AAA game, no man's sky is trying something new, hellogames put a lot of effort on this game and I don't understand how more people complain about NMS costing 60 dollards than fucking call of duty costing 70 dollars
...Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X?
mechs
Yeeeeessssss
Andrés Pizarro Xenoblade chronicles 3D was the biggest open world game on handheld until the Nintendo switch came out and legend of Zelda breath of the wild came with it.
KingArthur5o3x Are you from the future?
1Kenny30 yep
