My mum was subpostmaster when I was 14, I was bullied in school and would go and help her after school and work weekends and holidays. I'd often have to cook and clean whilst she spent hours in that post office trying to balance on a weds and end of the month, I'd stay after school sometimes to help her try to find shortfalls. Our family was completely broken because of this, my mum had to work throughout her pregnancy with a high risk of pre eclampsia, we were so lucky my brother was born. The sound of the horizon helpline queue music brings back horrific memories for me and I have lost so many jobs since because of anxiety with experiencing working there. She was so good at her job and it angers me so much that we wasted so so many hours over this. Ironically she had to get a post office credit card to fund shortfalls and ate through savings. I hate that she gave everything to the community with an evil corporation hanging behind her shoulder every day.

If the heads at the top that knowing pushed for this don't do time, then every comp in the UK is going to be looking to pad there numbers in the same way. They are the elite, I wouldn’t expect any charged to be made against anyone, in reality the Post Office board even the current one should be in jail, Post Office staff like investigators should be jailed, Fujitsu board last and ore sent should be jailed, Fujitsu staff like those lying on the helpline or accessing Horizon systems and fiddling figures illegally in jail, the judges who sentenced the Post Masters and Mistresses with little to no evidence and no independent evidence in jail, several MPs should be jailed too for ignoring this or being too incompetent to do anything about it.
All we will get is ‘lessons will be learnt’ and ‘we are very sorry’ and Fujitsu paying SOME of the compensation, but I guarantee not all compensation owed will ever be payed.
That’s the elite established UK for you, corruption is pretty deep and a daily occurrence and has been for decades. I mean look at it now, all we have is a select committee looking at it, but they can’t put anyone in jail, all they can do is find our facts already known, this should be a major Police investigation under criminal law into the hundreds of people involved. With some already arrested under caution.

Part of the issue, stemming from your comment, is that the vast majority of MPs have chosen to take degrees in the humanities, politics, philosophy or economics. They haven't taken really hard courses in the sciences (including computer science) or aspirational, empathic subjects like the Arts. The result is, combined with public school education, a production of a vast number of entitled and poorly educated idiots who can barely switch a computer on (and in the case of several Tory MPs only for pro in Parliament).
We need more scientists and artistes in Parliament along with a whole lot of them grounded in living in everyday society. In no way am I saying that people with no degree shouldn't be in Parliament, far from it - we need good people who represent the whole of society.

Totally inept services, money going missing, huge financial deals benefitting government and then decades drawn out with no account for responsibility. They should all receive compensation immediately. Even if this system was governed regionally, there had to have been multiple examples of shortfalls, which should have begged the question what's going on is something going wrong with this system? Clearly there was. Those effected need an apology and payments due to them and their families. Why does it take a documentary to get things going. I worked in IT for over 30 years and the fact that Fujitsu and the Post Office have LIED about remote access to Horizon terminals makes them both completely culpable in this whole sordid miscarriage of justice. I have done the calculations, and a simple solution to the compensation problem is this: Number of sub-postmasters x average annual income x average years working for PO since Horizon went live. This would give an initial fund of 7,000 x £30,000 x 10 = £2.1 billion. Those 983 sub-postmasters that were prosecuted should also be awarded an additional £100K for pain and suffering. This would add another £98,300,000 to the fund. What's the problem? Fujitsu and Post Office must pay up now!!!!! There is no point in dragging the inquiry out any further as we now know Fujitsu and the Post Office are criminals.
P.S. Also people like Jo and Lee Castleton should be reimbursed for all the monies they paid in making up the shortfalls, and their defence costs.

There was not an office in the UK which was not acutely aware of this unstable operating system. If the Horizon terminals were not falling over and having to be re-booted everyday - this would have been a major item of news. To think the post office could avoid this is laughable. Without custodial sentences for the perpetrators of this conspiracy - the UK will become more lawless. At the time, if the post office had gone to apple and asked it to develop 'Apple for Post office' - they may indeed have had a stable system but this would have been expensive and post office were already trapped in a toxic relationship with Fujitsu. It was a hoax, perpetrated by Post Office leadership and it was carried out 2000-2010. A ten year fraud/extortion operation.

One of the lesser talked about this scandal was Fujitsu's help line. They had restructured their tech support so their top employees went from dealing with highly technical support for corporate clients to being demoted to work along lower tier employees. Unsurprisingly the rollout of Horizon left a lot of people confused, from people who had never used a computer before to people who couldn't get the system to work. The Fujitsu tech support didn't just resent people who couldn't understand the system they were also racist. People would say things like "I have another scamming Patel" about people trying to figure out why their system wouldn't balance.

Sometimes you see a situation more clearly from a distance, so on that basis I venture to make the following comments:
-It will become harder to recruit sub-postmasters after the way they have been treated.
-Over 900 sub-postmasters were collectively accused of misappropriation of funds amounting to malfeasance all around Britain at around the time, an event which on this scale had never happened before. Didn't anyone in authority make the connection between the introduction of Fujitsu's Horizon software and multiple cases of previously honest sub-postmasters essentially being accused of theft?
-The parliamentary bill for a blanket exoneration of sub-postmasters, while justified and long-overdue, does put judges that brought in guilty verdicts in an invidious position. Their decisions have been arbitrarily overridden and their integrity undermined, thus bringing the criminal justice system into disrepute. Some might posit, "What if there were a handful of postmasters who really were guilty?" After the way the majority have been treated, I say say "Suck it up, HMG".

Even if every affected sub-postmaster is awarded compensation 10X the amount that the PO took from them, if the PO managers responsible for this receive no custodial sentences, then justice will not have been served. These criminals knowingly destroyed the lives of hundreds of innocent, hard-working and loyal employees just to save face. They have blood on their hands. If they don't serve time, then I'd support retribution by any means. I'm surprised they're not all on their knees begging for forgiveness from the wider public, let alone those who's lives they ruined.

Post Office and Royal Mail are different. Post Office is owned by the government, although it has its own independent board, making it a separate and unique business.
The Post Office Board holds responsibility over the operations of the Post Office. This means that the Board can freely focus on growing its own revenues without completely relying on government funds in the future.
Post Office Ltd became independent of the postal service Royal Mail Group on 1 April 2012 as part of the Postal Services Act 2011. The UK government had initially retained a 30 per cent stake in Royal Mail, but sold its remaining shares later in 2015, ending 499 years of state ownership and becoming privatised after the Post Office detached from this.
