This is the best BMW GS review. It comes from the owner of many bikes and not a person who reviews bikes for an hour or a week. He's a long-term owner of many bikes and from his experience, delivers solid information. I've watched countless hours of bike reviews from beautifully crafted sales brochure videos to bare-knuckled Aussie Outback testimonials. This review stands out among all them and I've been watching reviews of BMW GS and many other bikes for over 2 years. I've made my final decision between 850 GS, KTM, Tenere, KLR 650, Africa Twin, Triumph Tiger and others. This is the final stop on a long journey. Thank you for this.

One feature that I've never heard anyone mention, nevertheless very important. The radiators are well protected, being located well above the area where the front wheel flings debris.

Excellent description. I had a F700 BMW and switched to a R 1200GS like yours. The R1200GS is easier to ride than my previous bike. BMW is more expensive because you buy “safety” features and quality. The features are outstanding ABS Pro, ESA, link breaks, hill stopping, traction control, riding modes, etc, etc.....I did ride my bike from NY to Key West an also rode to Nova Scotia. This bike is comfortable and reliable. My next bike will only be another GS.

      LOL
Same thing here. Started with an F700 GS and 3 months later bought the R1200 GS.
And every time I have to explain to people: the 1200 is only more dangerous when compared to the 700 when you talk about your right wrist (meaning throttle!!!). Otherwise in EVERY OTHER feature it feels always more safe!

I have the same 2017 as you, with same color scheme. I was glad to read your comments, because they re-enforced my own evaluation of the bike. The longer I ride it, the more I appreciate its performance. Especially shows up when you push it, as you mentioned.I had a 2013 model without traction control, and never felt comfortable. Big difference. Your review was excellent.

I traded my 2014 R1200RT in for the 2020 1250GS. I'm loving it. Not even Ryan's (FortNine) negative review could diminish my pleasure.
I know BMW screws us on the pricing and service costs, but since I knew it going in I can't bitch about it.

Great review, I seen other you tubers that ended up selling their 1200 for another bike. I had a new 2010 R1200GSA and sold it in 2017 as I need the money and I loved it. My last ride was just over 14,000 km in two weeks from Calgary AB to Alaska (south end to the north end Prudhoe Bay Ak). Great rides. My next bike I plan on traveling the world (first Canada West to East the US East to West the down to South America). Just need to make that $$$$$.

Hello from the UK..Bought my first-ever GS (1250 Exclusive ) last year and love it. So far its been to Norway/Sweden & Spain with given me any problems. The TFT is great, I love the way you can just switch over to kph from mph when in Europe. My only problem with it is the heated grips which only have two settings (very hot & red hot) I wish they had gone with the RT five-stage version.

Great Review, like the reviewer, I have owned dozens of bikes over the decades. The GS is Magic and the older versions deliver the same enjoyment as the newer models. Just more refinement every update. Find a clean older model with all the accessories and you are golden, just like the smart reviewer here. However for off road, I prefer my KLR as a mid range ADV short of interstate travels. Simple advice: more off road=KLR, more highway=GS. Ideal buy used and have both like the reviewer. PS I have ridden with the reviewer and he does not crash ofter.

I am not as big a fan of the older ones as you... but you do have one of the better years for the air/oil cooled machines. I agree the cost to own is not bad at all if you buy a used one. They hold value pretty well! I agree about a smaller bike for some trips. The GS is too heavy in some situations.

The Boxer motor design is incredibly strong. Germans are also excellent metallurgists. I’ve dropped, slid, and crashed my non-GS ‘02 R1150R on street & trails, and it’s scratched up but Zero problem. My ‘05 GS has single crash bars on the front and I have no worries. The bike is about 60lbs lighter than the water-cooled ones and I’ll keep it that way ha. 🏁

My 09 too. I don't have traction control or ABS and I like it that way just fine. Cruise would be nice but since I prefer to stay off the highway in Italy, it's hardly noticeable unless I need to make up time and hit the Autostrade. I rode a friend's 2021 R1250GS last summer for a bit and while it's much quicker with cool electronics, I found myself a bit disconnected from the road and longed for my simpler 1200GS. That's not to say if someone gave me a new bike I wouldn't take it, but more for now, basic is better for my style of riding.

Great to have an impartial review by someone who has owned so many bikes, thanks! I’ve got an old 2010 F800gs, $7500 from BMW dealer in 2017 and it came with about $5k of bits on it, including Mosko Motos (fantastic!) etc. It has such a great brap from the exhaust, feels more like a dirt bike which I love, but agree it is too tall (I’m 52, 6ft, 200lbs) & feels heavy when loaded. Shaft drive and tubeless is a huge plus on the 1200 (chain lubing no biggie unless sandy, but tubes are a hassle!), making me want to step up. I’ve done two 6000 mile trips so far in the US, solo camping ‘easy’ versions of the Continental & Pacific Divide, lots of forestry/logging roads. Fell in love with the 1200 Rallye but it was just too new & spendy at the time and I would have had to kit it out from scratch too. Thinking about getting a bike for the UK right now and to tour Europe over the next few years, I’ve been looking at the Yamaha Tenere 700, but you’ve just put the 1200 Rallye back on my radar. I think a lot more riders would go for the 1200gs if they were more honest with themselves about their rides! (road vs off-road).

Excellent review. Just bought a 2017.5 and taking delivery in a couple weeks. Have had a 2016 Versys 650 since new, so will be a massive upgrade. Needed something bigger so I can take the wife on some trips. I am going to miss the Versys though. I road that bike across the country doing 5300 miles in 12 days. 107 degree heat to 13,000+ ft elevations, torrential downpours, the works. All loaded down with gear and camping equipment. It never skipped a beat.

What a great review. I’m in the market for a new bike as I’m having issues and a battle with Triumph about my Scrambler 1200 which has been in and out of service 6 times in the 10 months that I’ve owned it. I went with the triumph over the GS solely due to the price difference. Regretfully. Again, really good video. Thanks for posting and love your backyard!

Love the R1250 GSA HP. Waiting on my 2020. The only thing these bikes need is a decent horn. Can you believe that? This bike sees about 80% or more of super slab. Such an easy fix for BMW. In any event, the Denali Sound Bomb is getting installed ASAP. Great review! Life’s short, just buy the bike.

Totally agree with you that the GS1200/1250 feels like a much lighter bike. I've ridden a friend's 1200 and recently the 1250 he's upgraded to. I haven't ridden as many adv bikes as you for comparison, but I do think this is still the benchmark in the sector. I will be looking for a nice pre-owned example as my next bike. Great video!

10 days ago I bought a second hand BMW S1000XR as a possible replacement for my R1200GSA. The bike is a beast, but besides the incredible power, acceleration and if one is into that, the inline 4 exhaust note, I would choose the GSA over the XR any day of the week. I just sold the XR today and I’m so happy that I still kept the GSA. Just took her out for a spin, and having ridden a different bike for the last 10 days, makes me appreciate my GSA sooooooo much more.
It’s the most complete, comfortable, confidence inspiring and versatile bike I have ever owned, and I’m sure I will keep her.

I currently own a couple of bikes but my main 'go to' bike is a 2016 BMW R1200GS. I took a year off work a while back and took a ride from Alaska to Argentina on a R1200GSA, in all honestly I didn't like the thought that maybe I was playing it safe and riding a bike that on paper was the best, but did it have the best character and soul. After the trip I changed the bike several times, including a Triumph Tiger 800 and Ducati Multistrada enduro, both had some advantages (but even bigger disadvantages) now I'm back on a BMW, I believe the GS is the best overall it really does everything remarkably well (I rate the GS much higher than the GSA) I think the next move is to bite the bullet and pay the extra and trade in my 2016 for a new 1250GS

Thanks for validating my opinion about my 2018 GS. The pleasure of riding & smiling has been mine for 50 years. Mostly big bikes for the last 30. Including 2 Ventures, 5 Wings & 3 BMW’s. My 1200 GS is without doubt the best & most comfortable bike ever. Long distance is my thing riding in all of the lower 48 & 8 Provinces. First trip on my new GS last year was from Kelowna BC to Montreal Quebec. Including side trips, 16,000 kms on mostly secondary byways and tent camping while in transit. My BMW 1200 GS is amazingly nimble & only sips fuel at an average of 55 mph ( 90 mph) . With its 125 HP it is amazingly fast too when required. I can’t tell you how fast, on the grounds that it will incriminate me!

Incidentally, I have a 2018 GS Exclusive which I have added a few bits too and it's my twelfth beemer. Mine was secondhand too with only three hundred miles showing so saved a couple of grand over a new one which allowed me to add a few things for the extra I saved. I've subscribed to watch more. I agree with most everything you’ve said about the GS. I’ve been riding the 2016 GSA for two years now and done some long rides/tours and some fire roads. These bikes are so comfortable and ridiculously capable. Suspension, gearing, riding position all fantastic. When ever I’m off-rode I have to manually turn off traction control and anti-lock which is a pain.
I wish there was better use of the left rolling toggle since I don’t have bmw navigation but I think they improved that in 2018. The menus/buttons for riding modes is a bit clunky. Really don’t like having to stare at the dash while riding.
The cost is well... high. But you really get what you pay for at least with BMW.
I don’t know about the GS but the GSA is TALL! My inseam is 30 inch so my legs are pretty short.
    Great review! Enjoyed the watch.

A bike can NEVER be too clean. One can ride hard & still have a spotless machine. Over my lifetime this obsession with cleanliness has shown me that this is how you get to know whatever it is you're working with. This is a great "preventive maintenance program" (the USN taught me this). I carry tools for myself but usually it's for others who don't :) I'm not one who has stacks of dollars to throw away so I maintain my machines, It doesn't matter if it's a lawnmower or a home ~ take care of it.

A+ review and comparison of R1200GS to other adventure bikes. I agree with every comment regarding why the GS is such a superb machine, like you I want the ultimate motorcycle experience. I all-day rented a number of adventure bikes before narrowing it down between an Africa twin and 1200GS. I ended up buying a used excellent condition low mileage 2017 Africa twin with every conceivable after market accessory for $10k. A similar low mileage fully loaded used 2017 1200 GS was $18k. I went with the cost-effective used Africa twin, but I foresee a 1200 GS in my future in a couple years. I like the idea of having an aspirational bike, such as a 1200/1250GS in my future. With CycleTrader and Craigslist there’s always a good deal available on a perfect machine if your willing to search and wait for right motorcycle. I buy lightly used but like new as I am a practical man - there’s fun in the search.

Big Rock ADV keep the excellent videos coming, I enjoyed your klr650 and Africa twin videos way back when those posted. what I liked best about the 2017 1200GS was the ESA suspension and ability to lower it , cruise control, more responsive on road 19 inch front wheel for my type of riding. Overall the 1200GS is a well engineered integrated package that is near excellent for multiple types of riding as you mentioned. AT better off road, refreshingly simple electronics, lots of aftermarket accessories, significantly lower used prices, lower maintenance costs and likely more reliable. It would be nice to have multiple machines.

Nice review, great perspective. I’ve had about seven different “ADV” bikes, if you will, and think the BMW 1200GS is one of the smoothest of them all. The “farkles” are second to none. Haven’t ridden a 1250 yet, I know myself and don’t want to have another payment yet. Ha ha. I used to commute on my GS and do long distance unpaved on the GSA, I do typically take a different bike on more serious unpaved or trail but it’s a personal preference. I did have a couple ADV’s I was not comfortable off asphalt (I do have a heavy throttle wrist) but the BMW does give confidence in almost any situation. Thanks for the share. 👍🏼

Oh, and agree with the Tenere, it was in the garage for a short time. It was a very top heavy ADV, and tended to overheat easy. Didn’t buy an Africa Twin, went with the Tiger after the test rides.

I recently bought a GS 1250 my first GS I had another 2013 BMW that I rode for 29.000 miles. No lie after riding it for 100 miles I felt more confident and could ride it faster and safer than my old bike. The suspension and torque make this bike like a magic carpet. No matter what you own or what you think you want next, go ride one and I think you will know then that you would love a GS.

The problems with final drives is directly to the splines and how they are vented. In the older bikes, there is a design flaw regarding the venting and how moisture is getting into the tube. Newer bikes are getting a new rubber valve that restricts water from getting in. The moisture will cause the splines to rust. So the real opinion is whether this has fixed the problem, or do you need to do your greasing of the splines more often. Given the amount of labor, I am going to do my own splines greasing more often and not taking any chances.

I’ve had most adventure motorbikes, and everyone of significance currently in this class. For the last 10 years I’ve also owned the 1200gs and gsa’s and had the other bikes to try and find the second best adventure bike for my purposes. Ended up adding a r1200gs Rallye to my 2015 as the best second bike and moved on to sourcing the best third bike. Long story short, currently own three R1200gs bikes, each for different purposes and with different tires fitted, a R1200gs adventure 2015, a R1200gs Rally 2018 and a R1200gs Trophy (base spec with no extras) 2016. There really is no other bike that gives me that amazing “Welcome Home” feeling. I have honestly tried to like the other medium and large adventure bikes, but each had something that annoyed me to no end which the large gs bikes just don’t have. From adventure touring on the adventure, outback trails on the Rallye or commuting and city duty on the Trophy, I always feel comfortable and at home. It simply is what it is.

What I say about this bike, and I own the 2018 GS Adventure (low suspension...I’m short), is that it’s one of those rare things in life you can find. In that I mean, that it’s not the best at anything, BUT IT IS...very, very good at every thing. Get one. Just friggin’ get one. That said, like all brands, BMW will have issues. Look up The Misendend Flyer’s repair on his rear monoshock. Criminal, BMW. I mean rrrrreally criminal to sneak that crap in. BMW really does stand for “Bring My Wallet”. And I still say get one.

I think you are misunderstanding Enduro Pro and Dynamic Pro modes. The Pro modes simply give you the ability to CUSTOMIZE the settings. I have a 2018 GS and I just decided to install the plug and customize the two Pro modes to exactly match the standard Enduro and Dynamic settings. But you can, for example, set the Dynamic Pro throttle response to ROAD, if you want a softer throttle.

    • @NULUSIOS
      @NULUSIOS 4 роки тому

"The parts are ridiculously expensive"? Not on my planet (or ok, my country).
BMW parts and servicing is well close to the mean prices of same type motorcycles.
That some parts are too expensive for what they are (brand irrelevant), that yes definitely.
Also, after warranty expires, it is a pretty serviceable bike by any expert mechanic.
As for the bike itself being overpriced, I doubt it "spikes" much (or at all) the pricing of the category.
Thing is, that everybody gets it with everything but the kitchen sink. Extras do cost.
Also as it markets itself as the bike that everybody else is copying (which is not far from the truth), it would justify some price overhead (if there is one).

I have one of those older 800s (a 2010 F800ST) with the Rotax engine. It's not a GS, of course, but I still agree with you on many of the positive aspects, such as wind protection, comfort, drive maintenance (it has a belt drive), etc. I've only owned a Suzuki GSX650F before this one, and in those regards, it's much better.
However, I don't think reliability issues with BMWs are as uncommon as you mentioned. I'm not saying they're like Alfa Romeos, but there are quite a few bad design choices, both small and not-so-small, that make mine seem like a liability as it ages. The engines and probably the other important bits will probably last a long time, but it's the peripherals and controllers/actuators, etc. that cause all the trouble. Hopefully, they have since been rectified, although Ryan F9's recent review of the R1250GS suggests that they might have added some new Achilles-heels.
On the whole, I feel like that trade-off between comfort/features and reliability/maintainability between European and Japanese bikes is still as strong as ever, although that paint-flaking thing on the forks is unbelievably dumb (that too by Honda, of all brands).
