10:16 speaking of this Thwomp though I really like someone's headcanon I've seen where this is the Thwomp in Bowser's Castle (Mario Kart 64). He was imprisoned because he helped Mario get a star and committed treason
Finally someone else who likes TTC. One thing you didn't mentioned is the DS version makes quite a few changes to the stage, mainly to the beggining section, where they extended the floor at the beggining of the stage, making it less likely you will fall off the stage early on, wich I think it's a nice change, since it now focused on building the dificulty as it goes on, instead of punishing players right at the start with death.
The fog in tick tock clock is because they turned the draw distance waaaay down in tick tock clock. For some reason the draw distance only works horizontally in sm64, and so because tick tock clock is so vertical, the stuff above you will always be loaded. So they had to turn the draw distance way down (i believe it is halved, from 4000 units down to 2000 units) so the game didnt crash or lag from loading everything. And hence the fog, to mask it.
[1:04] I like bits like this in your videos. The line delivery is always well executed. [6:38] This Star is named after “The Pit and The Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe.
A little fun fact: The DS version of SM64 has a built in map feature, and when you enter Tick Tock Clock, you can see the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 on areas outside the map. This helps makes the whole stage feel like youre in the clock face sideways. A less cool fun fact but still one nonetheless, this version added an extra Bob-Omb Buddy in most stages who will give you the location of the 8 red coins on the aforementioned map. However, they were also added to Lethal Lava Land and Tick Tock Clock, making them revealing the coins to all be in the one spot be funny as hell.
Ahh Tick Tock Clock, a very unique stage plagued by 64's jank. If you've seen the pannenkoek video, you know how much of a pain the invisible walls here can be
I could never get through the last few levels in Super Mario 64 before like Wet-Dry World, Tall Tall Mountain and Tiny-Huge Island. They all seem so difficult to me.
Thanks for pointing out the invisible walls for this level. This level is notorious to me because it's invisible walls. I've died so many times due to the one at the start.
I love how Mario 64 managed to make such a memorable level inspired by the Mario Kart Track. It really gets you to think about the potential these courses have to become mainline levels
It's not just Tick Tock Clock, half the courses have some kind of negative connotation in their name. I feel like the German translators weren't having a good time with this game at all.
I love having all of my progress of this stage get undone by hitting one invisible wall that I had no way of seeing, thank you mario 64. also how dare you for insulting my goat tall tall mountain, i can't believe you would do something like this i'm shaking and crying rn.
mf theres a freaking invisi wall that you can hit when doing a dive when climbing upwards from the basement stairs after leaving from the basement door
I think for me Rainbow Ride is the hardest for sure- Tick Tock being down a ways, maybe 4th or 5th hardest. Could just be a me thing but I never struggled on that stage. I think in terms of difficulty for me I would go Tiny Huge Island, Rainbow Ride, Tall Tall Mountain, and THEN Tick Tock Clock. Though Hazy Maze Cave's 100 coin is kinda brutal too.. At any rate, great video! Keep it up man.
UA-cam videos are quality over quantity, I want to say “Finally, another awesome video!” Rather than “Does this really need its own barely edited diatribe?” (ahem Arlo ahem ahem)
i never realized how bad tiktok clock is until this video. half the stars are repeats. its aesthethic and unique elements carries it tbh. kinda a bummer the time manipulation is a really good idea and i wish they had done it in a better designed level.
I wish on star number 6 you would have breifely mentioned the speedrun strat for it while time is going. Not only is it a great showing of the runners skill, but is visually one of the coolest looking stars in the game, nicknamed "moving reds"
I honestly wanna see more of these as well. For the next one, do one of those comparison ones like with CCM vs SL. This time do it with LLL and SSL since both have similar things. Both in hot climates, both share the same theme, both have puzzles, both have a inescapable area with volcano and pyramid respectively. See which one is the best of the hot stages.
I haven't quite played this in Super Mario 64, but in the fangame Super Mario 63, it is my favorite stage. It really does a great job of making platforming challenging, even with the fludd on. The stage is not too hard, but it just that perfect balance between fun and challenging.
I like tick tock clock since it has the best use of advanced movement of any stage but its also hurt the most by 64s jank (I think you showed it pretty well in the footage)
The fog is most likely there for pragmatic reasons: Tick Tock Clock is the only stage in the game with a dramatically reduced render distance for objects, so the fog is probably there to help hide that.
Clock levels in anything always are so pretty and cool to play, maybe it's because clocks inherently are all about timing which is cool in of itself, idk i just like clock levels
In my opinion Tick Tock Clock is the greatest SM64 stage, it has the most unique theme/aesthetic and it uses it very well with its gameplay even when you get in the clock. I’d even say it remains as one of the most unique levels in the entire Super Mario series. Very glad that one of the few times Mario Kart was heavily inspired by a stage of the main series was with this level, the clock concept is not only creative but also works phenomenally as a platforming challenge and as a racing track.
I always got the red coin star first here, just like I always got Chain Chomp first on Bob-Omb Battlefield. Yes, first playthrough included. In fact, all the stars I failed to get in Tick Tock Clock were because I was used to playing with the clock stopped and some of the later ones require the mechanisms to be moving, so I'd either play while frozen and get as high as I can before getting stuck or turn things on and then get killed by the platforms.
One of the better stages in the game, but DEFINITELY the hardest for 100 coin challenge. Theres only like 105 coins total. It really lets a player flex their platforming skills.
I find time stopping a huge problem for Stomp on the Thwomp. If you are not a pro player, who could just barely get the star, you will literally be stuck at the really end of the level if you stop the time and you had no way of knowing that this will be a problem, until the really end of one of the longest stars in the game. 12:06 So yeah, that is exactly problem
Design-wise, it's a pretty unique level with its whole clock theme and lots of moving parts that can make it pretty challenging. Also, I really like it in Mario Kart DS too! 🕰️
tick tock clock destroyed my friends and family, ruined my life, and the fog is there to prevent lag according to pannekoek2012. i will never forgive tick tock clock.
I love tripling jumping off the stairs at the beginning of this level and diving to barely reach the area behind the pendulum. It’s unnecessary but fun
I love the IDEA of this stage but I have always hated playing in it, I hated it as a kid and I hate it now. 64 Mario bumps into walls, fails to grab on ledges, misscalculates distances. It's a shame when Nintendo re-released 64 they never provided any optional enhancements because I'd love it with Oddyssey Mario, it'd be a very engaging stage.
I mean, if youre like me and spent 5 hours watching a documentary about how Mario 64 was beaten with the least amount of A button presses, then yes, hands free, Tick Tock Clock is the hardest stage on the game.
I do think Rainbow Ride is tougher cause patience is sometimes I struggled with more than vertical levels. If you never knew how to stop the moving parts of the clock though this could be a greater challenge than the other level.

@The_Prince250Marty has more than Infinite strength now and had to be sealed in the castle.

@@Odyssey_Central makes sense... I would love to see that video!
@@Odyssey_CentralThat would be a cool video unless you call them bad in which case it wouldn't be a cool video.

Part of me agrees with you.
Another part of me wants those Sunshine and Galaxy videos he mentioned in the outro.
@YoshiAteTooManyYoshiCookies I don't know if I have it in me to watch a bunch of videos of odyssey central slandering mario galaxy...
@@BlueMarioGaming to be fair, he doesn't HATE the games, he just likes them less than the other 3D Mario titles.

It's also great that the timing gimmick isn't completely unexplained; the Toad outside the level hints that the time on the clock is important.
A little fun fact: The DS version of SM64 has a built in map feature, and when you enter Tick Tock Clock, you can see the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 on areas outside the map. This helps makes the whole stage feel like youre in the clock face sideways.

Only Odyssey will make a whole vid of him thinking of Mario from one singular word: “Time”
I think what would have been really cool is if the speed of the song changed based on the speed that you set the clock to when entering it
We really got another 64 Level by Level before another Odyssey Level by Level
I think he wants to make us feel nostalgic by uploading more Mario 64 videos
And before GTA 6.

"Hardest Stage: Tick Tock Clock"
correction: Title Screen
3:53 I always thought that the movement was based on the Star. I never knew that we could control the movement of the clock. Mind blown.
Amazing job on this video!
I love how when you talked about the stomp on the thwomp star, you played Thwomp Ruins in the background from mariokart 8. Nice touch :D
Always loved how the German name for this stage is Tick Tock *Trauma* , very fitting imo
It's not just Tick Tock Clock, half the courses have some kind of negative connotation in their name. I feel like the German translators weren't having a good time with this game at all.
I feel like a combination between a cookie & a clock level would be amazing visually. I think the really need to combine themes more.
