The brains behind the coup thankfully wrote and gave accounts of why they did what they did. Zik was never even pencilled down for anything because he was irrelevant. The sage of western region was the man the coup plotters wanted in power so they went about eliminating his enemies. Was the Premier of Eastern region a threat to Awolowo. Was ceremonial Zik relevant?. Ahmadu bello and akintola were the major targets. Others were collateral damages. If the coup was for Igbo interest, then it shouldn't have happened because the Eastern region highest the topmost positions in both civil service and political offices. A group of people who committed an act have given reasons why they did what they did. No outsider should be making any permutations. A military coup happened just like the others that took place afterwards, end of story. 'Igbos' must be detached from that coup.

Why is this guest blaming Zik for taking d military boys seriously, while Akintola and Balewa did the opposite? Haba! The epicenter of d crisis, instigated by the north, was in the west between Awo and Akintola. The guest is wondering why Michael Okpara in Enugu was not killed? Let me ask, did d military boys kill Awolowo? Nope. Why? Bcos Awo was not part of rotten politicians at d time. So if they spared Awolowo, why would they kill Okpara? This is why we Igbos need to be careful of some of these our brothers in d south.

Thank you Edmond for your direct questions. I agree with the description that the coup plotters had good intentions but the execution of the coup gave it an Igbo coloration.
Major Adewale Ademoyega book "Why we struck" is one of the few authentic books on the coup. The coup leader Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna let down his comrades by the way and manner he executed his assignment. The reason why some people held the view that it was an Igbo coup is because there were just too many coincidences. Azikiwe as the Governor-General conveniently left the country. Okpara, the premier of the eastern region suddenly left the country on the eve of the coup. General Aguyi-Ironsi the head of the Army penciled down for arrest couldn't be found by those assigned to pick him up. Now wait for this, General Maimalari who was not listed for assassination was murdered by Ifeajuna for previous grudges. And of course all victims of the coup were either from the South West or Northern region. Indeed page 79 of the book Why we struck tells a telling story of betrayal and dereliction. The turn out of the coup was unfortunate. But the sincerity of purpose of Majors Kaduna Nzeogwu and Adewale Ademoyega is not in doubt

It was a british coup to destroy the 1963 constitution. They trained Nzeogwu and gave him his post. Nzeogwu spoke no Igbo and was known as Kaduna all his life. All those officers were trained and commanded by the British -pawns in a chess game. The sole beneficiary of the coup was the British. After all these years someone is writing a book and regurgitating Igbo coup --mindless plagiarism, nothing new. Wisdom eludes Africans.

It was never and Igbo coup...we have grown to dispute this lies. Among the coup plotters are 4 Igbo officers, 4 Yoruba officers, 1 Hausa/Fulani officer, 1 Efik ( South South ) officers, 2 Ishan ( South South-Edo ) and the coup was to install Obafemi Awolowo whom the military boys trusted. So what made it an Igbo coup? Going by the current settings of the country, only 2 Igbos from the present South East while the 2 other Igbos are from South South. Tagging it Igbo coup because prominent Igbos are not killed was a failure of the coup plotters who failed to carried out their assignment in Lagos because it was Odumegwu Ojukwu stopped the coup in Lagos. Stop twisting history.

The Nzeogwu Coup was a WESTERN COUP (led by Western Igbo and their Yoruba collaborators; 4 out of the ‘5 Majors’ were from the old Western region) to halt Fulani castration of Western Region (declaring a state of emergency, rigging out and imprisoning Awo).
Secondly, the Yoruba are the root cause of the coup. The Awo-Akintola crisis led to the Coups/Counter-coups, the collapse of Regionalism, and ultimately the Civil War. The Wild-Wild West killings went on daily in Yoruba land from October 15, 1965, to January 15, 1966. A whopping 3 months of non-stop mayhem that could only be halted from outside. The fact that the first coup was a revolution to save the Yoruba is collaborated by Ademoyega - one of the 5 majors in his book “Why We Struck”. He stated that the D-day had to be brought forward, to prevent a total overrun of the West which had already been decided by the Balewa-led govt. According to Awo's Private Sec (Odia Ofeimun - his video is on UA-cam), the aim of the coup was to flush out the neo-colonialists from Yorubaland and make Awo the leader of Nigeria. Awo said so himself; quote: “The January coup authors had planned to release me from Calabar, fly me to Lagos, and install me as Head of State. The authors of the coup had no plan to govern the country under a military administration.” (See Obafemi Awolowo, My March Through Prison, Macmillan Nigeria Publishers Ltd, 1985; page 297). The principal targets of the coup were the leaders of the anti-Yoruba cabal (Balewa, Sardauna, Maimalari) and their Yoruba collaborators (SL Akintola, Fani-Kayode). Most of the other deaths (including those of Easterners like QMG Unegbe and Lt. Oduh) were collateral. All those who were pro-Awo were spared, including the NCNC leaders (led by Zik), who were in political union with Awo’s faction of the AG.
IN FACT, THE FULANI HAVE BEEN PUNISHING THE IGBO FOR OVER 50 YEARS FOR DARING TO SAVE THE YORUBA FROM THEMSELVES. EVERY LIFE LOST IN THE CIVIL WAR IS AN INDIRECT RESULT OF THAT VENGEANCE.
Tinubu is a new SL Akintola (Akintola used rabid Igbophobia and a self-serving alliance with the North to force himself on the electorate). BAT's "Ebi lo kan" disastrous regime has put the Yoruba in a fix. The North has a better buffer from hunger because most staple foods and animal protein come from their region. The East has a financial buffer - Nigeria has the highest dollar remittances in Africa ($20 billion pa, higher than Nigeria's oil revenue) mostly from Ndigbo abroad to their families in Nigeria. So paradoxically, the criminal government that Tinubu has engineered by his theft of PO's mandate will have its worst effect on the Yoruba masses who have little or no buffer. I do not see how the West can avoid another "Awo-Akintola" type of crisis. But this time around there will likely be no Nzeogwu to save the "sophisticated" Yoruba from themselves.
