Thanks Alan and Sally, for taking us along on this beautiful sunny cruise. Just playing catch up, on to the next one. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Morning Alan and Sally, loved watching this. We remember that journey with great fondness. We stopped in exactly the same spot as you for a stock up in Tesco. I've said before that Sue never drove our boat, so lock wheeling duty it is! Really looking forward to seeing what you get up to next....cheers both 🍷🍷
Good afternoon Steve, we’re pleased this episode brought back fond memories for you and I’m interested to hear that lock duties fell to Sue. We didn’t cruise on too far, so have a think about where we might have stopped. You’ll see in the next episode. Best wishes to you both, Alan and Sally 🥂
Hi Alan and Sally. Thank you for another great video. Some nice drone work in there also, it is nice to get that perspective on the canal and its surroundings. I must say, I really like those Horseley Iron Works bridges, I think they are magnificent. Reggie is also looking in fine form, I bet he is a great companion. Cheers 👍
Thank you very kind of you to say, drone footage does add another dimension. There’s a pair of the Horseley Bridges at Braunston Turn and another at the marina there, as well as elsewherey. Reggie is much loved and spends most of his time sleeping. Cheers 🤠
I love the use of the old OS County series plans 1:2500. I the 1960s, before I came down under, I was a surveyor with the OS, doing revisions and also new 1:1250, in various areas, including the midlands. In those days the canals were abandoned and a dumping ground, but I thought they should be used for recreation. I'm so glad they are. Keep them coming Alan.
I love maps, can study them for ages, and have a number of 1” OS maps 6 and 7th series plus many older maps. So I’m interested to hear of your time with the OS. There is certainly a lot of canal restoration work going on, which is encouraging to see. The old maps are available on the National Library for Scotland website. All the best.
Hi Alan and Sally, that was a lovely vlog. I hope you don’t get too many negative comments about Sally working hard with the locks while you stay on the boat. You often mention this and feel the need to explain why, please don’t feel bad about it as I’m sure the majority of your viewers totally understand why it is this way with most crews that are a male and female pairing. That was a handy mooring in Rugby even if you did want to go a little further, always good to be near a supermarket. Looking forward to the start of the Ashby canal 👍 Take care, have a lovely weekend
Hi Paul, glad you enjoyed this episode. I wouldn’t say negative as such but viewers not familiar with boating find it odd that ladies do the heavy work. Even I’ve noticed, I’ve mentioned it a few times. I don’t feel bad, It is what it is. Still a few episodes to come, before we reach The Ashby. All the best, take care 🤠
@ that’s good then mate 👍 I thought it was closer than that 😂 I will enjoy watching all the same. Hope you’re feeling better now. You sound like you have a heavy cold on the voice over this episode
@@paulturner7837 I can't say how many episodes, as I'm still editing. Not a cold, a bit of a cough, and I am improving thanks. Have a great weekend, cheers.
It’s a very old fashioned way of thinking that the woman operates the locks and the man steers the boat. That’s how it used to be years ago but not necessary today. Sally also filled up the water and went to the supermarket. Come on, Alan - you can do it!
It’s not old fashioned at all, many ladies do not want to helm the boat, that’s why they’re often seen doing the lock work. If you’re a boater, you will have seen this for yourself. Viewers see enough of me when I’m by myself, I’m sure they’d rather see Sally, anyway, who do you think lifted the water onto the boat🤔. We share duties, tasks, call them what you will, when we can. Who put up the canopy when Sally was shopping! Cheers🤠
Hi Alan another relaxing video, thanks. Have you noticed a reduction in the number of views since you changed the title of your channel. Regards from Chester.
Hi Philip, glad you enjoyed this episode. I don’t think the name change is relevant. I’ve been watching viewer numbers for many years and was in touch with You Tube about it well before the change. I think there are several reasons for the change. YT does unsubscribe viewers, so that has an effect, also there are many new boat-tubers continuously cruising, who can bring new and varied content on a regular basis, which I can’t. I am disappointed with numbers but if we look back to Lock Terror that’s had 36k, so people are watching if not viewing. Cheers, have a great weekend.
@MyNarrowboatVenture Thanks Alan, the reason for my question is that if you type 'narrowboats' into UA-cam you don't appear. You have to type the new name of your channel in full. Regards from Chester.
@@philipjones9458 That's very interesting, as I typed in the word narrowboat and looked down the long list and couldn't see anything of mine. I did it again and one video popped up, third time I did it, four videos popped up. Although the facing name changed, behind the scenes the url is still the same as orginal, so I don't think the name change is relevant. If you have time, on another occasion, would you be good enough to make several searches on the word narrowboat and see if I appear. Perhaps you could PM me through Messenger. Cheers and thanks.
Hi, Alan. Subscribed to your channel three episodes ago, so I have a question that you may have already answered in the past. The engine on your boat has a really nice sound to it, almost a purr. I take it that it is a four cylinder, but it almost sounds like a six. If a four, it is possibly a bit higher revving than usual. Sounds good when you open the throttle. So my question is-4 or 6? Have been on the canals for a total of six weeks, many years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Too old now, though, and health not top notch, so it's nice to travel with you and Sally. Enjoy yourselves. Best wishes. Desmond.
Hi Desmond, greetings and welcome aboard, thanks for subscribing. I've never been asked anything technical about the engine, but I'm glad you like the sound of it. Sorry to disappoint but it's a three cylinder Barrus Shire 35, max horsepower 30hp at 3000rpm. Sorry to hear your health is not so good and hope you're keeping well. Perhaps you'll find time to look through my back catalogue, I cover cruising, DIY and heritage topics, many of which are arranged in playlists. All the best, take care.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Thanks, Alan. That did surprise me. But it still has a nice 'purr' to it. I used to be a bulldozer operator and always thought a 6 cylinder Cat D6 sounded so much better than a Cat D7 with 4 'pots'. I'll keep following you're pleasant travels. Cheers.
@@desmondsouthwell3529 I have heard from others that it sounds nice but it's different when on the boat. Thanks for your support, I know nowt about bulldozers. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Funny thing, but about three months ago I sold my Ford Fiesta Eco Boost, which had a 3 cylinder engine. But one would never know it, just going by the smooth sound and performance of it. Best car of the many that I ever owned.
Sorry I meant that for Fran and Rich as their dog Jess has died. UA-cam changed to your vlog before I commented. I love your vlogs Alan and Sally, especially since Sally has joined you Alan.
I am deeply dissapointed in the way you are treating Sally. It is not unusual that both members of the crew alternate in dealing with the the locks; woman and man makes no difference. The argument that steering of the boat is for right handed persons only and not suitable for left handed persons is wrong; both can handle the controls perfectly. Apart from that there are no narrowboats equipped with a left-handed layout. Learn Sally how to handle the boat. It will be a satisfactory experience for both of you.
The reason why many ladies work the locks is that they don’t wish to helm the boat. It’s that simple. There are those that are happy to helm, which is fine, and duties can be shared, if that’s the wish. There was nothing said about left handed boaters in this episode. I have previously mentioned that the controls are designed for a right handed person but I’ve never said a left handed person couldn’t use them. That is for the left hander to determine, so your recollection of what I said is wrong. Sally will learn to handle the boat, if and when she wants to, at the moment that’s not the case but I am happy to teach her. I didn’t take kindly to your opening remark, which is unwarranted, unacceptable and undeserved.
Thanks Alan and Sally, for taking us along on this beautiful sunny cruise. Just playing catch up, on to the next one. Take care and all the best. Stevie
