Really appreciate this Robert. Gandalf is one of the best characters ever written. Edit: I love how Tolkien wrote Gandalf as pure good. With the character of Gandalf he stated that Good does not have any other shades, it is pure at all times.
My wishlist for the channel: 😊 1. Character studies for the greatest villains (Sauron, Saruman, Morgoth, Ar-Pharazon, Smaug) 2. Livestream talking about each of the Four Ages. 3. livestreams on some of the great realms of history (Gondolin, Khazad-Dum, Lindon, Gondor/Arnor, Mordor, etc).
I would really appreciate a livestream on countries in middle earth, like Gondor, Rohan or Arnor. What’s their history, political structure, relationship with others?
Would love to see a video on the white council. When, why, and where was it formed? What was its mission statement? What was the power dianamics and relationships between the members? When was it resolved?
Maybe you could make deep dives starting from different pieces of poetry and songs from the Lord of the rings books. What they are actually about - the bigger stories that lies behind them.
Enjoyed the stream. Enjoyed the chat. Mods were great, members were generous. Highly recommend the channel. Having said that, now its time to go Ice Troll on you. Gandalf did not sacrifice himself to save his friends. True he blocked the bridge to give them time to escape but I don't think he considered it a death sentence. He had a plan to break the bridge, note HIS half didn't crumble away. He didn't expect to be dragged down with the Balrog. But that being the case, he fought with it until it FLED from him. He CHASED the balrog up the Endless stair. He didn't have to do that, he could have let it go and made his way back to Lorien. But he chose to finish the battle because once he knew there was a Balrog in Middle Earth (before then he had no idea) he realized his duty as a maiar of Manwe was to finish it off. He expected to WIN the fight. In a sense he 'sacrificed himself' but it wasn't to save his friends in that moment. It was to save Middle Earth as a whole.
My favorite description in LotR is about Gandalf. He and Pippin just arrived in Minas Tirith and stand together gazing toward Anduin. Pippin says he did his best in the meeting with Denethor. ‘You did indeed!’ said Gandalf, laughing suddenly; and he came and stood beside Pippin, putting his arm about the hobbit’s shoulders, and gazing out of the window. Pippin glanced in some wonder at the face now close beside his own, for the sound of that laugh had been gay and merry. Yet in the wizard’s face he saw at first only lines of care and sorrow; though as he looked more intently he perceived that under all there was a great joy: a fountain of mirth enough to set a kingdom laughing, were it to gush forth. The situation is dark--the siege is imminent, and in less than 24 hours Gandalf will ride out to rescue Faramir. But in the face of great darkness, Gandalf has a great joy and a fountain of mirth. Remarkable!
Thanks for answering my questions about Gandalf and the breaking of the fellowship! I would be interested in a series about relationships (not necessarily romantic)--take two characters and talk about how they meet, how they interact and change as their relationship develops, basically a two-handed character study. Gandalf and Pippin, Aragorn and Eomer, Frodo and Sam, Gandalf and Aragorn, Denethor and Sauron, etc. Thank you!
hello robert. i would like a live stream or streams about the evil beings like sauron. the witch king. melkor. shelob. and ofcourse the grey company haha. greetings from the netherlands love everything you do.
Re: pipeweed addiction, "I know what is the matter with me, " he muttered as he sat down by the door. "I need smoke! I have not tasted it since the morning before the snowstorm."
On the tax policy thing. I know "the author is dead" and stuff, but ... Tolkien although suffering losses early in life, seems to never have experienced financial hardship. His lowest point was probably at 12 years old after the death of his mother, but he was immediately taken in by the church and send to a reputable school, receiving a scholarship. Low scum didn't get scholarships back then, did they? GRRM in contrast spend a good part of his childhood in the projects, which indicates that the lack of financial assets was a formative experience for him. So it kinda fits that GRRM has a higher sensitivity for economic questions than Tolkien.
I'll take 3 hours on magical objects in LOTR, please!! History, mythology and lore, etc. Relationship to real world mythological artifacts or legends. Lovely!

Anyone ever think about these fireworks and why he never used them against the enemy?
